View Full Version : "How far to the next town?" - the answer!

After a great deal of research and number crunching, here's the next instalment of my musings on Fantasy Settlements in gaming! (Previous instalments: Introduction (http://running-the-game.blogspot.co.uk/2013/07/creating-fantasy-settlements.html), Resources (http://running-the-game.blogspot.co.uk/2013/08/fantasy-settlements-part-1-resources.html), Urbanisation (http://running-the-game.blogspot.co.uk/2013/11/fantasy-settlements-15-excessively-urban.html).)

Here I answer the question: "If I randomly teleport the player characters to the middle of a country, how far are they from the nearest town?" (http://running-the-game.blogspot.co.uk/2013/12/fantasy-settlements-part-2-distribution.html)

Feedback is very welcome.

(BTW, I get nothing but kudos from you visiting my blog - no ad stream, nowt.)

Wow, you really did your homework on these!

Thanks for sharing it with us, these are great guidelines.

Very nice! I might just include these calculations in the setting I'm working on at the moment.

A quick question - large areas of desert, tundra, and dense forest would naturally have a more sparse density, correct, and you can't assume that there will always be a town within a few miles, right? Just making sure, since if I show this to my players they're bound to start leaving dungeons and heading into town for supplies with a short 1-mile walk  .

In addition, would it be too much to ask for you to set up a second table, converting the distances to kilometers as well? I much prefer the metric system, and it's what my setting uses for its basic measurements. That would be most appreciated!

Sorry for the delay in replying - thanks for the feedback!

I'm planning to compile the conclusions of this project into a set of plug-n-play rules. It's a long term project (my RL job keeps me very busy), but I plan to get it done by the end of summer.
