Hmmm...

Something along the lines of: "Know yourself." Only without the pretentiousness and maybe a little more wit. I'll think of something.

EDIT: How about this - You are really the only thing you can completely know, so get to know yourself.

Hmm...I'm not really sure that I have one motto. Still, I have a general one like this.

"Life is like a fortune cookie: If you eat the cookie first, you may regret it once you find wisdom. If you find wisdom first, you may miss out on a great cookie."

Acknowledge the past, live the present, plan for the future.

Granted, I have a terrible memory and I'm a pretty aloof fellow, so I more often than not don't actually follow the above.

Sun Tzu's The Art of War is a great repository for wisdom. The whole thing's great, really, but my favorite saying comes from a commentator speaking of Zhang Liang's Ruse of the Empty City and its hallmark quote: "If I do not wish to engage, I can hold my ground with nothing more than a line drawn around it." While the original intent of the full saying refers to deception, to me (especially as I have not read Romance of the Three Kingdoms), refers to being being able to survive regardless of an enemy's assault and my own defenses; "a line drawn around it."

Highly recommend John Minford's translation of The Art of War. It has the English translation in the first half, and the second half has the text, in addition to commentators both ancient and modern, and gives context to some of the sayings in the text.

Art of War so should have been declared a Classic...

The way I heard it was:

When life gives you lemons, make lemonade. Then, track down life, pin his ass to the ground, and pour the lemonade in the bastard's eyes and scream "THAT'S FOR THROWING CRAP AT ME YOU ASS!"

Or, an alternate version is:

When life gives you lemons, make lemonade. Then, find someone whose life is giving them vodka and have a party.

No, no, no. The proper ending is "hurts like <boop>".

I do not really have a motto- but if I had to have one, it would be along the lines of "The universe is a bastard, so do everything you can to spite it" which matches my theory that if something makes you sad, go out of your way to be happy to flip the bird at whatever wanted to make you sad.

I don't really know what my motto is, but I sometimes go by: "Don't take more turns than absolutely necessary".

Example: You have 6 glasses, 2 bowls, 2 bags of snacks, a movie and 3 bottles of coke. You probably should go two times, each time taking half og the things, or get a friend to help you. However, you can take it all at once by your self. Therefor it's your obligation to do so.

Edit: Oh, and the "Never argue with a fool. He will just drag you down to his level and beat you with experience." from my sig.

Midnight Son

You serious?
When the customer asks if you sell cigarettes while looking at you and the cigarettes are right behind you, you tend to lose a bit of faith in humanity.

When the customer asks for the price of beer, then complains that they can get it cheaper down the street, then buys it anyway, I want to smack them upside the head.

When a customer complains that their bank statement is off a penny in their favor, I get a very strong urge to go get my knives. (Seriously...He took time out of his day to make a trip to the bank just for said complaint.)

Those are all past jobs. I won't even go into what I deal with now.

"Life happens" reminds me to stop taking it so personally when something goes wrong again.

"To be heard you need to speak" is for all those times when all it would take to stop something you don't like would be to speak out against it, but you're likely refrain from doing so by being afraid for your social status, inclined to consider it not such a big deal, or simply because of shyness.

Or;
When life gives you lemons, a pitcher, ice, a juicer, and glasses, make lemonade.

My motto I stole =):
"Never give up, never surrender."
That or:
"Life isn't fair, anyone who says otherwise is selling something."

Althouhg I wouldn't class the second as a motto really, just a saying =).

You people seem to be dancing around the true proverb regarding lemons. Allow me to enlighten you:

When life gives you lemons, do not make lemonade. And for gods' sakes, don't throw them at someone. Instead, think. Think long and hard about what you did to get these lemons. Because if you can get an abstract concept like Life to give you real, physical lemons, you're one step away from the secrets of the universe.

Not as elegant, I know, but far more true. And let us not forget "Pain is weakness leaving the body."

Vespe Ratavo

Hmm...I've got a few. Including another lemon saying.

"When life gives you lemons, beat life in the eye with the lemon, kick him to the ground and go into a barbarian rage."
"Febreeze, Duct tape, chocolate and a gun! If they can't do it, it can't be done!"
"*Anything from a Billy Joel song*"
"Life is too short for boredom/mean people/diets etc."

I'm sure I have some more...whats the word...philosophical ones. But I can't remember them right now.

Success in life is related to honesty and decency. If you lack those qualities, you're guaranteed to succeed.

Ivanova was one of my favorite Babylon five characters, I'd quote her myself but my brain just farted out. So instead I'm going to offer some famous quotes instead.

"Beer is proof God loves us and wants us to be happy."
-Ben Franklin

“ Never rush a miracle man, you rush a miracle man, you get rotten miracles”
-Miracle Max, the princess bride

“Today we may say aloud before an awe-struck world: "We are still masters of our fate. We are still captain of our souls."
-Winston Churchill

“There is no substitute for victory.”
-General Douglas MacArthur

"With ignorance and arrogance, success is assured"
-Mark Twain

“Success is how high you bounce when you hit the bottom.”
-General George S. Patton, Jr.

A motto I like is "Non timetis messor"

And from the Tick, though it's not really a motto more a thought for life:

"Eat your tulips...they're good for you."

"There are times when one moment you're on top of the world, and the next, it's squashing you."

I only say the first because I don't have any tulips in my garden, and thus can't be harmed by it; the second, because I noticed after a while that it was the story of my life. Those are my two originals; the following two were stolen from other people, namely, my art teacher and my friend Shaena:

"Life is like a roll of toilet paper--the closer you get to the end, the faster it goes."

" 'I'm mature' is just another way of saying 'immature'."

OK, maybe those don't count as mottos--but the last two are darn clever  I don't generally go for profound quotes...funny is much better. Unless it's a "squashing moment", and then I can't look at anything funny, I just want to go to sleep for 12 hours and wake up happy.

Edit: If you could read my sig, then you'd know what I REALLY live my life by.

"I would rather make a mistake than regret not taking a chance."

"As we grow up, we learn that even the one person that wasn't supposed to ever let you down probably will. You will have your heart broken probably more than once and it's harder every time. You'll break hearts too, so remember how it felt when yours was broken. You'll fight with your best friend. You'll blame a new love for things an old one did. You'll cry because time is passing too fast, and you'll eventually lose someone you love. So take too many pictures, laugh too much, and love like you've never been hurt because every sixty seconds you spend upset is a minute of happiness you'll never get back. "

"You can't have slaughter without laughter."

"Thousand nations of the Persian Empire descend upon you...Our arrows shall blot out the sun." --"Then we'll fight in the shade!"

The first two are mine, the third I stole from a friends Facebook, and the fourth is something I said recently in class that had my friends cracking up. No, it's just I'm tired of this idiocy that's ravaging the planet. People looking at me gathering buggies (my job) and they toss their cart the other direction 15 ft. People ask me if we're selling cigarettes when I'm standing in front of an entire wall of them. People ASK me can I ask you a question. People ask me if I'm sure when I tell them directly what I think without flair. People treat their animals as if they're ****ing retarded and they're human babies (they don't have to be freaking dolphins to have an IQ bigger than your nose, *******), they also tell their pets that they love them more than their partners. People immigrate to a country where they took NO effort to learn the language, much less our system of currency. People hate OTHER people who immigrate into our country for immigrating in the first place, when the country we're in WAS CREATED OFF OF VARIOUS EUROPEAN IMMIGRANTS AND AUSTRALIAN PRISONERS AND PROSTITUTES.

I've had enough of our society's mis-steps and it's high time someone TELLS them that they're wrong instead of letting them continue with their blunders unaware. And I can't stand it when I point out other people's wrong-doings and they get pissed at me for doing so. Yes I've done the same thing, BUT DO YOU SEE ME DOING IT SINCE? NO!

There are several candidates for my motto, being as follows:

"He who is in love is wise and is becoming wiser, sees newly every time he looks at the object beloved, drawing from it with his eyes and his mind those virtues which it possesses."
-Ralph Waldo Emerson

"If I speak in the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I am only a resounding gong or a clanging cymbal. If I have the gift of prophecy and can fathom all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have a faith that can move mountains, but have not love, I am nothing."
-The Christian Bible

"Love is the salutation of the angel to the stars."
-Victor Hugo

The final winner, however, is from my personal hero, Keats:

" 'If I should die,' said I to myself, 'I have left no immortal work behind me—nothing to make my friends proud of my memory—but I have loved the principle of beauty in all things, and if I had had time I would have made myself remembered.'"
-John Keats, to Fanny Brawne

Hmmm, one I thought up recently: Bad people can get ahead of the good in life. It happens. It happens a lot, that's true, because the selfish are willing to push others down to help themselves get up faster. But bad people need the good to push down. In a world where everyone is too self-centered, everyone is getting pushed down as fast as they push themselves up. Everyone as a whole, the few bad included, only grows in a world where most people are genuinely good. Look at how we've grown over time--what does that tell you about the human race? I'm a cynic when it comes to people, I admit it, but I do believe in the innate goodness of mankind as a whole.

I'm quite fond of the theme of braveSaintSaturn's The Light of Things Hoped For, as a motto: "The bravest thing of all is to hope." It's a never-say-die attitude for everyday life.

As for defining quotes, I can think of three that really resonate with me:

"When you have to kill a man, it costs nothing to be polite." - Winston Churchill

"As long as a man can look his oppressor in the eye, he is still free." - Jean Paul Sartre

"The only man who is really free is the one who can turn down an invitation to dinner without giving an excuse." - Jules Renard

But realistically, the words I live by most often are these:

"Being smart isn't about knowing all the answers. It's about stalling long enough to work them out in your head."

Also... for the love of Springfield, people! The beer quote is not from Ben Franklin! It's a Homer Simpson quote, who attributes it (falsely, due to drunkenness) to Franklin.

Two from my sig,

"Love and friendship bring both strength and weakness."

"Life is like a puzzle. You're going to stuff it up a lot, but you'll eventually get it right."

And one I just thought of,

"Good judgment comes from experience and experience comes from bad judgment."

Both quotes are by E. Hemingway:
"It's none of their business that you have to learn how to write. Let them think you were born that way."
and
"All thinking men are atheists."

I have several, but these are my top three:

- Better to regret something you did do than something you didn't do. (though to be honest I've made quite a few errors in following that!)

- What can't speak can't lie. (actions speak louder than words)

- Rules are there not so you follow them all the time, but so you have something to remind you of the dangers when you break them. (i.e neutral good is the best good!)

I have a few sentences I like to go by:

-"If it has a solution, why worry yourself? And if it doesn't have a solution, why worry yourself?". This is a Spanish proverb meaning, if you can solve something, go for it head on, and if not, don't give yourself crap for things you can't control. Also, that worrying is pretty stupid anyway, because the only things you get from worrying are sleepless nights, ulcers, and nothing done :smalltongue: .

-"You are the only person you're going to have to be with for all your life, and therefore it is this opinion the only one that should really count". I think this is obvious. I am receptive to other's ideas, but don't expect me conforming to your standards, 'cause you'd be in for a surprise.

-"Never underestimate the ability of the human brain to be totally unreasonable". Self-explicative.

-"Maturity is totally overrated". Seriously, what is with this "be serious" this, and "self-consciousness" that? Life is a game, and I only got one quarter, so I'm going to enjoy my playthrough while it lasts.

-"Dancing around the brambles is not going to make it any less painful when you have to get through. It will only make you sweaty and the thorns will hurt more." meaning, it is better to go straight to the core of the problems than trying to sugar-coat them - it's gong to hurt anyway.

-"When something is worth doing, it's worth doing it right. Incidentally, there are not that many things worth doing"

-"If there is such a thing as an absolute truth, I have never encountered it". Little is truly certain, and it should be treated as such, IMO.

I sincerely doubt it's original, and I probably subconsciously picked it up somewhere on the internet, but:

"I came into this world, bloody, screaming and naked. AND BY GOD THAT'S HOW I'LL LEAVE IT!!!"

Not exactly how I mean to go out, but it's so much fun to say.:smalltongue:

"Naked I came from my mother’s womb, and naked I shall depart." is a quote of Job, which may have inspired that quote, though I do recall something similar from elsewhere.

Ahh, so you've read Snicket... Loved his books, though I haven't read the last two... They weren't translated (They stopped translating them to Spanish after the Ersatz Elevator)

My motto could be "Always look at the bright side of life"
Or perhaps "Life's a piece of sh.. when you look at it... Life's a laugh and death's the final joke..."

I dunno, some Monty Python just to make life a little funnier... Everybody needs a laugh...

Hey, perhaps that should be my motto!!

OK, from now on, my motto is: Everybody needs a laugh

"Humans err. But it takes a human with a computer to really screw things up." - I do tech support ><

"What doesn't kill you, really pisses you right the hell off."

"Remember, you're unique, just like everybody else."

And... likely the one I'll spout without thinking...

"Do not meddle in the affairs of dragons, for you are crunchy and taste good with ketchup."

I don't really have a motto as such seeing as people tend to view me as quiet and hardworking (lol for the first part:smallbiggrin:) people would expect my motto to be something like: If it's worth doing, it's worth doing well.

Some I quite like are: Carpe Jugulum/Diem
Tempers Fuggit
Live fats die yo gnu

My mottos:
Do something helpful every day and karma can't kick you in the rear
If you can't prove me wrong then I'm right
Meh, do I care (only to insult people NB: this is not part of the motto)
Those who build castles in the sky had better build foundations on the ground quick
To insult you or to ignore you, that is the question

Pretty much the poem If. (http://www.swarthmore.edu/~apreset1/docs/if.html) Think your mature? Read that through. If you say "Of course I pass!" then read it again. If you say, "Whoa... I'm nowhere near that..." then you're fairly close.
