View Full Version : What game should I get

Okay all I have is a copy of Baldur's Gate (that no longer works I might add)

So I was curious, what game should I get now?

I was thinking either Baldur's Gate 2, or NWN.

Which of those games would you recommend? Or is there another, better game that has a D&D style?

I like NWN, but that's only worth it if you have a good internet connection and you're willing to use it. The game's great for multiplayer and has spectacular mods, but the vanilla single player game is pretty dull (I actually barely even scraped into it before I started playing player-made modules).

I have a 1 mb/s connection, but it's split four ways.

Though not everyone is usually on, my connection can go as fast as 300kb/s

Is that fast enough?

Yeah, anything over a 56K modem should be good enough, really (56K is fine for multiplayer, but downloading stuff takes way too long). If you have that, go for NWN, preferably the "Platinum" or "Diamond" packages. If you like Baldur's Gate then you won't regret it.

Oh yeah. Still I'd suggest BG2, so good it will make you cry.

BG2 is on my All-time-greatest-games-of-all-time for a reason. Don't get me wrong, Neverwinter Nights is good too, but it is eclipsed by Baldur's Gate 2.

BG2. Easy choice.

Going with the other option, you should get both.

Only have enough to get one at this point in time.

Seeing people's response I think I will get BG2, though I'll wait a bit longer.

Really? I remember buying BG2 with expansion for 30 Euros some years ago and NWN I got plus all expansions from a magazine, but both you could get for 30 Euros with all expansions by now I think.

BG2 is one of the best games I have ever played. Theres like 72hours of (engrossing) main quest and I reckon about the same if not more of that in side quests.

BG2 beats the living hell out of NWN and leaves it crying in the corner. BG2 all the way.

For single player BG2 is much better. However NWN does have a large number of free third party modules, some of which are quite good.

But really Planescape:Torment is far better than both. It has, by some distance, the best single player campaign available in a cRPG.

It does, if you just play vanilla NWN. The game's original campaign is terrible, especially compared to something as impressive as BG2's. No one likes NWN for the original campaign though, it's the fan-made content that makes it worth playing.

NWN with mods provided me much, much more entertainment and enjoyment than Baldur's Gate II ever could have.

BG2. It's a game you can play over and over again, especially with player-made mods and characters. Great story, great characters, great fights, great game.

I'll second Planescape: Torment if you can get your hands on it. I really really tried to like BG2, but I just couldn't get into it. No particular reason, it just didn't do it for me. I much prefer NWN, the mods can be great, and if you're into it, you can play on free persistent-world servers.

I saw today that Atari have released a pack with NWN, all the expansions, GG 1 and 2 and Icewind Dale. Why get 1 when you can get all 4.
