Just a general query... how do you (specifically you) pronounce Xykon?

Personally I see the X as being pronounced with a Z like in Xylophone... There's probably some other ways people think it should be... so you know... just wondering what everyone here thinks.

Rymes with a phrase I could see Miko using when addressing a fleeing prisoner. "Die, Con!"

Xykon is pronounced like this: ZIE-kon. And zie is how the XY in Xylophone sounds.

If Greenwich can be pronounced Grinich then I can damn well pronounce Xykon as Dominique the Rester.

Silly boy. Greenwich isn't pronounced "Ginich" anywhere in the known world. It is pronounced "GrEnnich".

Have to go. That old exennophobe professor Exavier is entertaining us on his exylophone at his estate ("Exannadu").

Stupid Hollywood.

Too bad the pronounciation key only works if you are a native english speaker.
Even with the key I don't know how to pronounce most of them.

I knew someone named Xica. She pronounced it "Shee-kuh"

Like, in Star Wars, Prince Xizor is "Shee-zor", so if it was Xikon, it would be "shee-con".

I think with the y after the X it's more of a "Zie" sound, like Xylophone.

Sometimes I pronounce it as Zsa-Icon other times I pronounce it as Szi-kon

I can't not pronounce it as "zie-klon" even though there is no "L". Stupid habits.

I believe it's pronounced zye-khan, zye as in the first syllable of xylophone, khan as in Genghis Khan.

I can convert the pronunciation key to X-SAMPA (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/X-SAMPA) (a board-friendly version of IPA, for those that are familiar with it) if that will help:

Elan ["i:l@n]
Haley ["heIli:]
Vaarsuvius [vAr"su:vi@s]
Durkon ["d3:kQn] (Br.E.) or ["d@`rkAn] (Am.E.)
Roy [rOI]
Belkar ["bElkAr]
Xykon ["zaIkQn]
Nale [neIl]
Sabine [s{"bi:n]
Thog [TQg]
Yikyik ["jIk"jIk]
Zzd'tri ["z@zd@tri:]
Hilgya ["hIlgi@] (Giant's official pronunciation) or ["hIlgj@] (mine)
Dorukan ["dOrukAn]

And why not? I'll fill in the ones that weren't on the Giant's guide, although these are my own interpretations and are not official:

Celia ["si:li@]
Miko Miyazaki ["miko mija"zaki]
Shojo ["SodZo]
Hinjo ["hIndZo]
Pompey ["pQmpi:]
Girard ["dZIrArd]
Kraagor ["krA:gOr]
Serini [sE"ri:ni:]
Lirian ["lIri@n]
Soon [su:n]
Julio Scoundrél ["xuljo skaUn"drEl]

Any others?

I'd think it would be pronounced So-on with the two "o"s pronounced like [o].

Anyways, in my mind I always say Ksi-kon like the "X" is spoke usually in German.

I'd think it would be pronounced So-on with the two "o"s pronounced like [o].
That depends on what language you think it is :elan: His other name is Kim, a Korean name, but Korean doesn't have the "oo" combination. If it was Japanese it would indeed be [o:], but Soon was introduced in #196, before any of the Japanese-sounding characters had been named, so I just got the Englishy [u:] pronunciation stuck in my head and ran with it.

Well, at first I think in German and then I guess I found it quite reasonable to double-pronounce the "o" like I think an Asian name would be pronounced. But your explanation makes sense. :elan:

You mean like "So on"? Like he has a brother "So Forth", and a cousin "et Cetera"? Hmm. I think I'll go crazy soon.

Honestly, though, what other way could you pronounce Xykon? Although I admit that I read an 'L' into it for many strips.

Wannabe Writer* Theater Presents: What's in a name?

We step into the room to find Xykon slamming his laptop shut.

:xykon: Redcloak! Get in here!

:redcloak: Sorry, sir. I'm busy trying to -

:xykon: NOW!

Redcloak shuffles in. Oddly, he has toe-separators and a bottle of nail polish in hand.

:xykon: ...

:redcloak: Really, sir. It's not what it looks like. I just...ummm...

:xykon: Don't ask, don't tell.

:redcloak: Good idea, Lord Xykon.

:xykon: Redcloak, I was just looking at some goofy thread on the forums, asking how people pronounce my name. This has a few questions pouring into my decaying, evil brain. My first question is: If you were these goofballs, how would you pronounce my name?

:redcloak: In public or in private, sir?

:xykon: No, really. How...Wait. What?

:redcloak: Nothing, sir. It's pronounced "zy" - rhymes with die - "con," as in those people Americans put in prison.

:xykon: Back it up, green face. What was that about "in public or private" thing about?

:redcloak: Nothing at all. Just a little slip on my part.

:xykon: Yeah. I'll let that slide...just as soon as the snowball fight in Hades is over. Spill it!

:redcloak: Well...ummm...some of the hobgoblins have taken to muttering "Xykon, Schmykon" when talking about you. I think some of them saw you boasting about your Yahtzee skills.

:xykon: ...

:redcloak: I wouldn't worry about it, sir. Just -

:xykon: Redcloak, I want you to stop working on your pedicure, slaughter the minions who have taken to referring me as "Schmykon," and then animate them to maintain manpower. Am I clear.

:redcloak: Clear as vodka, Lord Xykon.

MitD wanders in.

:mitd: Hey, guys. Whacha talkin' about?

:xykon: Nothing. Got check the Teevo and make sure it's not eating the demon roaches.

:mitd: Okie-dokie.

MitD starts walking out, softly singing.

:mitd: Xykon, Xykon, bo-Bykon, banana-fanna fo Fykon...

:xykon: Freeze, Monkey Boy!
