Anyone can be a Possessed (BoVD) Dread Guard (MM2) with artificer levels (ECS), and an Item Cohort (UA), Ancestral Weapon (BoED) though that is such a convoluted way of doing it. Here I have a 20 level class on how to be an item that is also a character.

Alignment:Any
Hit DieD10
Skill Points: (2+Int mod)4 Modifier at first level, 2+Int mod every level after
Skills: Same as Artificer's
Starting Gold: Same as fighter

Weapon Proficiency: The Magic Item is proficient in weapons and shields as determined in the Armor Body class feature.

Armor Body: At first level you gain construct traits and lose all racial features reliant on you having organs and not being a suit of metal armor. Then choose a non-magic weapon and also a shield or second one handed weapon if the weapon you chose is also one handed. You may also choose to be light, medium, or heavy armor see below.

Light: Gain a +2 armor bonus, a max Dex of 5, an armor check penalty of 1, and an arcane spell failure chance of 15%.

Medium: Gain a +4 armor bonus, a max Dex of 3, an armor check penalty of 4, an arcane spell failure chance of 25%, and you movement speed is reduced by 5 ft.

Heavy: Gain a +7 armor bonus, a max Dex of 1, an armor check penalty of 6, an arcane spell failure chance of 35%, an your movement speed is reduced by 10 ft.

The man on the inside: When you are being worn you and your wearer share the same initiative and whoever has the lower modifier rolls it. During your turn you and your wearer share the same actions unless they require no motion of the limbs, body, or neck. If you and your wearer have conflicting actions then the one with the highest strength takes the action, but with a penalty equal to the strength mod of the other. Everyone wearing you gains all the armor qualities you possess, anyone proficient with the type of armor you are still take a non-proficiency penalty, anyone non-proficient is considered entangled as well.

Note: Because you are an item you can use the saves of your wearer.

Innovate design: At 2nd 3rd and 4th level, a Magic Items weapon, shield, or body becomes masterwork.

Non-Magic Upgrade (EX): Starting at 3rd level and every 2 levels afterwards, you may increase the attack rolls of a weapon by 1, increase damage rolls with a weapon by 2, treat a one handed weapon as if it were light for the purposes of dual wielding, increase the threat range or a weapon by one, increase the critical multiplier by one, increase a weapons range by 10 ft., increase your body or shields AC bonus by 1, increase your body's maximum dexterity bonus by 1, decrease your body or shields armor check penalty by 1, decrease your body or shields arcane spell failure by 5%, increase the speed you can move with your body type by 5 ft. You may select an option only once.

Magic Upgrade (SU): Starting at 3rd level you gain money equal to the starting money of a character one level lower then you this money may only be spend on enhancements which are applied to your body, weapon, or shield.

Super Upgrade (SU): At 16th, 18th, and 20th levels you may select one of the following options. Gain a size category by being more like a mech then a suit of armor, gain an additional arm which may wield a weapon or shield, become adamantine or mythril along with your weapons and shields or be considered an artifact for all game purposes.

Move as one
Prerequisites: 13 Dex
Effect: You no longer take a non-proficiency penalty when wearing a Magic Item character.

Can you move without being worn?

Yes the character is basically animated armor, and can be worn to protect another party member or gain a greater BAB and strength score from having a powerful fighter wearing him.
