Hello and Welcome to the second instance of OOTS Showdown. I am your host in this game, where you battle each other to death with your favorite OOTS characters.

Instance #1 has been won my El Jaspero who led Julio Scoundrťl to victory. This time, however, everything is open once again.

Firstly: The 11 rules of the Showdown

1) Each player assumes the round of an OOTS character and is thus called a player character.

2) Each player character has the following attributes, each of which can be altered during the game.
a) Alignment
b) Gender
c) Starting HP
d) Initiative Modifier
e) Six Abilities

3) All characters, not played by a participant are NPC. They are generated through the abilities of the player characters.
a) A NPCís actions are chosen by the player who created the NPC, unless control is otherwise shifted.
b) NPCís have no alignment or gender. Their Initiative Modifier at time of creation is 0.
c) If a player character dies, all NPCís, created by the character, are removed from the game.

4) The game consists of rounds, with one character acting once each round. The order of actions is determined by initiative rolls (1d20 + the modifier). All initiative rolls are conducted by me at the announcement of the round.
a) After the moderator has announced the round, each player has 48 hours to choose one of their characterís abilities and its target and send it to me.
a1) You may send me actions for future rounds in advance (or come up with templates for them) if you can't be present during that rounds.
b) In alteration to #1, players may NOT lower their own initiative values anymore.
c) Players with the same initiative act simultaneously.

5) All players, their characters and their abilities are known to each other. The main thread may be used for negotiations, support arrangements or other diplomatic issues.
a) Players may always change their action at a later time by sending another message to me.
b) Characters that are obliged to announce their actions openly have to post their actions in the thread at least 6 hours before the end of the deadline.
c) If a player doesnít act during a round, their action is forfeited and the character catches the ďInactivity FluĒ. The Inactivity Flu deals 2 damage to the character for each round, he has been missing. (For example, if a character is absent three rounds, their character is dealt 2 damage in the first round, 4 in the second and 6 in the third)
d) If a player decides to stop playing, they may hand control of their character to a replacement player. However, no player may control two characters simultaneously.
d1) The exception are abilities that explicitly hand others control of a second player.
d2) If no replacement player is found, I will write up a template for the character instead.

6) If not stated otherwise, abilities need an action to be used.
a) Passive abilities are in effect continuously or are triggered upon certain events. They donít take an action and you canít prevent them from occurring.
b) Attacks are defined as actions that deal damage to a specific target.
c) Generating abilities are defined as actions that create one or more NPCís
d) Some abilities have a lasting effect. If this is the case, the end of the effect is stated in the ability.
e) Abilities with lasting effects canít be stacked or applied to a target more than once at a time. (For example, if Xykon has imprisoned someone in his Moderately Escapable Forcecage, he canít cast the same spell on them the very next round after again). This rule prevents complete lockdowns.
f) Some abilities may cause players to hand control of their actions to another player. In that case, the respective player is notified by message that they have to choose their action, too. However, you canít order someone to attack themselves.
f1) If an effect calls for the next action to be controlled, it is only applied to the very next action. If two characters try to control the next action of the same player, the later effect overrides the previous one.
f2) If two players with the same initiative try to control a character's action, their effects neutralize each other.
g) Attacks can be ďenhancedĒ, ďdoubledĒ or ďdecreasedĒ. This refers always to the damage dealt.

7) Characters are dealt damage during the game. All damage is subtracted from their HP immediately, Damage Reduction being the only exception
a) If a character has 0 or less HP, they die immediately, even if they would be healed later that round.

8) The game is over once there is only one character left or an alternative win condition is met.
a) If all remaining characters die simultaneously, all who died that way are declared shared winners.

9) Before each game, characters are distributed among interested players.
a) Until a given deadline, players may choose the characters; they would most like to play. I recommend sending a list to me (via message) with the order of characters, they would most like to use. (For example: 1. Miko, 2. Roy, 3. MitD.) Iíll try to give you a character in this order. If that is not possible, one is determined for you randomly. It is recommended to include at least 5-6 characters in the list.
b) If multiple players have the same preference for a character, I determine the player, with regard whether they could get the next choice form their list, whether they had received a high priority character in the previous round and as last means, randomly.
c) If a player canít be assigned a character from their wish list, they are assigned one randomly.
d) If more players than characters apply, I will spontaneously create additional characters.
e) The OOTS, Nale, Sabine, Thog, Xykon, Redcloak, MitD, Lord Shojo, Miko and Hinjo are the 15 plot essential characters. Even if they are in lower priority than others, they will be handed to players.

10) After the characters have become distributed, each player chooses four of the six abilities of his character, then discards the rest.
a) Discarded abilities can not be used or re-gained for the remainder of the game.
b) At the point of ability selection, the distribution of players and characters is common knowledge.

11) Characters may become driven by templates if their player wishes to leave the game. In that case, they will be marked as such.
a) Template-driven characters will be marked as such throughout the threads. New players may join the game at any time by taking over a template-driven character.
b) The templates for the characters are kept constant. They will be revealed at the end of the game.

Thirdly: A few last words to everyone

- Everyone please recheck the cast of characters. I made some last minute adjustments.
- There are a few minor rules updates since #1. If you can spare the time, check them again. You are no longer allowed to lower your own initiative willingly, among other things.
- I have already received some wish lists. Note that you can always edit them until the very end of the deadline.

Player Registration and Character Wishing is now officially open and ends Sunday, 7 PM Eastern. At that time, I will distribute the characters and wait for you to select your abilities.

Question about Thors might:

It says four damage is added to Durkons next attack.... As written that means you could stack Thors mights as long as you like, then kill a guy with a single blow. Probably want to add either *Does not stack* or *Runs out next action*.

Silkenfist
2007-02-15, 06:06 PM
Selrahc: No, you can't. You can't stack two identical lasting effects on the same character.

2007-02-15, 07:07 PM
Hmmm... Well, if we need new characters, may I humbly suggest the Demon Roaces, or the Cliffport PD Chief? (his abilities could include an attack, an "arrest" move that denies somone their actions and protects them from attack, an NPC creator to bring out the rookies, a Siren that lowers initiative for one person, a passive "grumpy" ability that deals damage to somone using a non-damage malignant move on him, and another passive ability that lets him create multiple rookies at the cost of some of his original health total. What do you think?)

2007-02-15, 07:12 PM
I also would like to suggest Tim the enchanter( the goblin cleric to a high diety in OOTS #93)

Just a note it is a ogre in #143 not a goblin

Silkenfist
2007-02-15, 07:26 PM
1. Demon Roaches, Bandit King and Police Chief will be the first few to included. Maybe Eugene after that.

2. There is no benefit in sending your wish list early. It would be unfair to the players with limited net connection and/or the wrong time zone to live in.

If we get enough interest - say around 35-40 (quite possible I'm sure) I would go with splitting into two games. That way we don't stretch the limits of character creativity and also keep the game semi managable.

How many signups so far Silkenfist? Are you counting PMs plus posts or just PMs?

Beta: I received your list.

Right now, I am at 34 players. I can make about 40 characters before I have to resort to stuff like Goblin #143, but I realize that there is a natural limit somewhere. For this round, we will have one large group but for future rounds, I might think of a different system.

Actually, it shouldnt matter at all. Whenever you (approximately) double the amount of players, you (approximately) double the amount of players that have to die before the game ends, that's true. But at the same time you (approximately) double the total amount of damage being dealt each round.

At any rate, we'll find out soon enough. :P

Vespe Ratavo

There is only one answer to all of your questions:

A complicated math equation invoving probability.

All right, I'm on it.

If V attacks Hinjo with a missle attack on turn 5, and V has initiative 6 while Hinjo has 12. Henceforth, The Monster in the Darkness uses gluttony on turn 4, thereby raising his hp to 24, in threat of winning the game, and Belkar attacks the Monster, thereby dropping his HP to 22. The Monster attacks with a vengeful strike, thereby killing Belkar and dropping him out of the game, however Hinjo attacks Roy, as he sent in his action before the Monster attacked Belkar, causing V to attack Hinjo. If two (magical) trains leave Azure city at 5 pm, what is the probability that they will crash into the arena and kill everyone in the game next turn?

Castaras
2007-02-18, 11:26 AM
1 in a million chance. Because:

Since V*V+belkar = Hinjo, Hinjo/MitD = Two Trains.

Therefore the two trains will take an approximate 5 turns to get to the arena. Unless a plot hole causes something to change.

But since it's a 1 in a million chance, it will happen all the time. That's how it is, you know. Sod fate.

Vespe Ratavo
2007-02-18, 11:29 AM
Ah, but you are leaving out the fact that they are magical trains, enchanted with Expeditious Retreat (and possibly Jumping) so henceforth,

Train rage jump attack+ V + Hinjo / Lawful x 2d6+Belkar = 42.

So henceforth this game is the meaning of life.

Vespe Ratavo

If Frigs gets a headache next turn at initiative 17, Owls Wisdom wears off on Vespe, Vespe casts Vespe's Natural 20 and rolls a 20 on his next attack roll. Assuming that Vespe uses both his +5 Vorpal Keen Dancing Anarchic Holy Shocking Flaming Frost Thundering Wounding Disruption rapiers, what is the probability of ownage?

((I don't like real math, but this is fun ))

Castaras

Those 36 character concepts.... is our favorite half-ogre in there somewhere?
Please?
Is he?

For those of you wondering which half-ogre is our favorite half-ogre :

Spiked-chain-wielding half-ogre, chaotic evil, ?? hp , initiative ?

Spiked-chain slash : deals 2 damage against target. Takes up halve a round.
Spiked-chain trip : target loses next action. Takes up halve a round.
attack of opportunity (passive): deals 2 damage against a target that attacked you last round.
Combat reflexes (passive): deals 2 damage against another target that attacked you last round.
Toughness(passive) : The half-ogre's max HP is 4 points higher
Improved Initiative(passive) : The galf-ogre's initiative is 4 points higher

Attention again: Now it is time for you to select 4 of the six abilities of your character and discard the rest. I want to have every selection done until Tuesday, 7 PM Eastern. The 1st round will start immediately afterwards.

Now I know that there may be several people who did not get their favorite role. If two of you manage to agree on an exchange of characters until then, I will allow it. In this case, both of you inform me and send me the 4 abilities of your chosen character.

After Tuesday, there will be no further exchanges of characters allowed. If you have not sent in your choices of abilities until Tuesday, I will select for you. I will select sensible, but I won't change it afterwards.

Oh, I see. Mistyping.

Reading through that character list, I note that when Chief is replaced by Rookie, Rookie is apparently the same except that that he doesn't have the ability Rookie, except I believe you are referring to Successor, which is what you actually called the ability.

Not even my character, but I had to note that anyway.

:smallfrown: missed registration by an hour. Sigh.

Ideas for next game: flumph, teevo, lizard V, Hag, bag of tricks, and blackwing

I put abilities for these so its effortless for silken fist to put one in, as I'd like to play, and so decided to do all the work for silkenfist if there is any chance of that happening. Flumph is my first choice then TeeVo and finally bag of tricks.

Flumph: Lawful good, male, 12 HP, initiative -2
Tentacle: (attack) deals 1 damage and then another the next round.
Splat!: Flumph takes 2 damage, but gains a splat! marker. If at any time the flumph has at least 8 splat! markers he wins the game.
Counseling: Flumph loses a splat! marker and heals 3 HP.
Lucky escape(passive): When flumph would be reduced to 0 or below HP he instead takes no damage at all for the round, he must use Splat! directly after this ability. If he is at 1 HP dies from splat! or is reduced to 0 twice in a row he is killed.
And then, sniff, he stepped on my tentacle: Target good character must attack a character who has attacked the flumph last round
Comforting ally: summons an allied flumph with 6 HP an attack that deals 1 damage, and a heal that heals 1 damage. Coforting ally can only be used once per game.

If I can use this character I'd be happy to enter the game. (please? :frown:)

TeeVo Neutral, male, 15 HP, initiative +1
Buy(passive): Any character who heals TeeVo for 3 HP gains control of TeeVo for two rounds. If a character heals TeeVo over time for 3 (for example 1 HP one round nothing the next then 1 each round for the next 2 rounds) they gain control of TeeVo.
Scry: (attack) TeeVo deals 1 damage to target enemy, in addition one other character chosen by TeeVo deals an additional 1 damage on his next attack against that character but only if they attack within 2 turns of TeeVo's scry.
Other programs you might want to see(passive): Whenever TeeVo scries he records an additional 2 characters and gives the target ally a bonus on attacks against these characters as well.
TeeVo happy: TeeVo is pleased with himself, healing 3 damage, he may use this ability only after scrying an enemy who his chosen character to scry for attacks.
TeeVo sad: TeeVo is unhappy, looking so pitiful that a target enemy comes under his control.
TeeVo cord(passive): Whenever a character buys TeeVo he puts TeeVo on a cord, choosing 5 characters who TeeVo can scry. If another character buys TeeVo, they may put a new cord on him, choosing new characters for him to attack.

Will be editing in stats for the others. Next up, probably Hag.

Crap had 5 abilities for hag and then my comp glitched and deleted it. Forget it I wont stat Hag out. Now working on Bag of tricks

Bag of Tricks Neutral, object, 13 HP, initiative -1
Animal attack: (attack) animals come out of the bag and attack for 2 damage
Unlikely Animal: (attack) can only be used once every 3 rounds, deals 5 damage to target
Distraction: an animal from the bag distracts an opponent, they are unable to act next round.
Chew through bindings: Target 3 characters who cant act on a round are allowed to attack.
Apparently worthless (passive): enemies don't think much of the bag, attacking it lightly for 1 less damage than usual. Every attack is effected by this.
Generate Animal: the bag creates an animal, which has 1 HP and a 1 damage attack.

Thanks if you let me in.

My 9th choice?
My 9th choice?

Why on earth did I put Pompey as my 9th choice?

Edit: At least I seem to have won the prize for "Lowest priority character picked"
Unless people had 10 choices listed and got none of them ;-)

Editing again:
Seeing as they're going to be posted in the thread at some point anyway, heres my choice of 4 actions, and reasons for discarding the others.

Summon Monster: (generating) Create a Centipede NPC with 1 HP and an attack that deals 1 damage. If there is no Centipede NPC in play, create two Centipedes instead.
Buff Spells: Target characterís next attack is enhanced by 2. If it is female, the attack is enhanced by 4 instead.
Petty Vengeance: Deals 3 damage to target character that attacked Pompey last round.
Surrender: Pompey loses all actions and canít be dealt damage until the end of next round.

Discarded:
Disgust: Not enough females to justify it. Hurts as much as helps - ie couldn't get Hilgya to heal Pompey if he had this ability.
Guard the Hostage: Doesn't seem so useful. Though would that also extend positive effects as well as negative? I think it is intended to be negative only

Just some clarifications (haven't even begun the game, and I've got questions)
If someone controls Pompey, do they also control Pompey's centipedes (and similar for all other players/generated minions). The rule 3a seems to indicate that they do.

If a player loses an action, do they also lose the actions of any "minions"
ie if Pompey surrenders as an action, can any centipedes still attack?

I'll take Firebreathing, Scavenging, Low Profile, and Roaches Fortitude. Different Playing Field could be as much of a curse as a blessing, and so could Betting Agency. Crap.

This puts a wrench in the ol' plans...

Not that I had any plans anyway. Ah, well. Yay for characters with buffing and manipulative abilities, yet lacking any combat prowess at all!

I will need a healer for my one stab pony.

Question about minions and initiative. If I create two centipedes will they each have their own initiative rolls in the turn order?

As soon as everyone has PMed their ability choices. And I think we will still use this thread. They did last time anyway.

Ooo a support hero, sounds interesting. I think I'm gonna offer an alliance with Hilgya. Sound good? (quasi serious, I wouldn't mind the alliance, but I'm not dying for it either)

Oh and by the way thanks alot silkenfist, I know you didn't have to use your time to let me into the game. I appreciate it.

Anyone who wishes to get some of the Good character buffing action that is Thor contact me by PM, I'm open to alliances.

Way to shout it from the rooftops... :smallwink:

Question: Does Thor's Thunder effect NPCs? If so, all bandits, centipedes and hobgoblins can kiss their dreams of conquest goodbye.

Yes, yes, you can summon a hydra. Whoopee.

Meanwhile, I can survive a nuclear blast. Like to see your hydra do that.

Eh,they won't be kissing their dreams goodbye once I Cease and Desist Thor's Thunder, since it isn't labeled as an attack.

Thus I can remove it.

Unless that's a typo.

Or Cease and Desist Grant Spells, destroying your alliances.

Or strength of the believers',and then people will kill you normally.

At least you took someone with you in Ready Aim Fire. Nobody even tried to kill me. But hey, if it'll make you feel better we can all team up and kill you in the first round of this game as well.
Whos up for it?

Well I'd be willing to help you... but I don't really have a lot to offer. You don't need my heals, and you can't really give me any buffs.

Basically, we don't really overlap.

I was thinking more along the lines of helping who your helping. Provided there good. Also I could smite those who hurt you.

Thor's abilities will make things difficult for everyone, if you think about it. But still, he's cool.

Also: Does each Good character include himself?

Silkenfist

Calamity: Yes. Otherwise strength of the believers would become horrible in the endgame.
