So the Basic set is out (free download from Wizards! Yay!) and it has a few backgrounds: Acolyte, Criminal, Folk Hero, Sage, and Soldier ...

Of course we need a Sailor to round things out.

Skill proficiencies: Athletics; Weather*.
Tool proficiencies: pick one set of artisan's tools, or navigator's tools, or one gaming set; vessels (waterborne).
Languages: choose one additional language.
Equipment: a set of common clothes, a warm blanket, a flask-and-cup of potent booze, the tools with which you're proficient, and a belt pouch with 10 gp.

Sailor Specialty:
Different sailors take their places on different sorts of waterborne vessels.

Personality trait

1
I read omens in everything I see.

2
A fool for luck - show me a gaming set, I'll open my purse.

3
Everything new reminds me of somewhere else I've been.

4
Nothing ashore is as bad as the time the ship rolled over in that freak autumn storm.

5
Breakfast requires salt fish and wine.

6
Folks who haven't traveled far don't know what they don't know.

7
Only really comfortable asleep in a swaying hammock.

8
A partner in every port.

d6
Ideal

1
Orders. When things get tricky, it's best to listen to the appointed leader. (Lawful)

2
Open Sea. A person's authority rests on their competence. (Chaotic)

3
Shipmates. A good turn to a stranger brings good luck. (Good)

4
Hardness. A fool who won't hold to in a storm, is no-one I need in my crew. (Evil)

5
Courage. What's the good of having teeth, if you don't grin at danger? (Chaotic)

6
Widowmaker. It's best for a sailor to be buried at sea. (Any)

d6
Bond

1
I have a different old shipmate in pretty much any port. Some of them like me.

2
I owe some money in several towns.

3
When my shipmate got that fever, we knew they'd have a sailor's burial. I still have the trinket and purse that they sent for their family.

4
A child awaits me on a foreign shore.

5
My parents pray that I'll visit before I drown. I send them spare coin.

6
Whenever I can, I send my first captain a letter. Once in a long while, I receive a reply.
