Old school? I may actually have to go and create a demotivator when I get to my home computer now. That sounds like fun . . .

Also, just pinging thread so it's easier to find in the long list.

edit: And the opening scene from my next session of traveller...
http://fc05.deviantart.net/fs70/f/2014/258/a/a/bounty_hunters_by_golentan-d7zcnp3.jpg

Earlier this week I had my Concept Design class for my studies in Game Design & Production, and the teacher was asking about how you'd convey the mechanics of a fighting game and stronger moves that take longer to execute than other moves (like Street Fighter, for example). I instantly thought "like Exalted".

Like, DnD 4E feels like a video game when looked at from a player perspective. Exalted looks like a video game when taking a designer perspective. It was an odd realization, but one that makes me enjoy Exalted even more than I did before.

I've always preferred pure builds, and rarely prestige unless I'm a fighter or caster(and then only for full casting).

May not be optomized, but I always have fun.(cept that one time I got to play a hivemaster/fighter gestalt, and the GM ruled I could use fighter bonus feats for hivemaster feats. That was fun, and optomized)

Well, it wouldn't fit anyway.

Classic and X are both robots, but Volnut is some sort of Techno-organic/Bio-mechanical organism(Which are the human equevelant), Megaman.EXE is an AI/Uploaded human consciousness, and the remaining Megaman is a human bodysharing with an energy being.

X is the sae race and class as classic, but with higher levels, .EXE and Starforce are different Race same class, but Volnut is just his settings human equivalent with soem powerful weapons and a miner's uniform

Evasion is nice to have, but not worth dipping two levels for unless there's something else from those two levels you also want (Monk 2 in particular is just loaded with goodies).

Umm, Monk 2 in my opinion is the best martial dip you can take when you start factoring in Alternate Class features. Only bad things are you lose 1 BAB and only get 8HD.

For any poor souls that are not sufficiently familiar with "My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic": That is a mother Ursa holding her baby. The BABY is approximately 2 or 3 stories tall when standing on its hind legs, so use that to estimate scale. That means the mother is into "we need expanded space and probably reach rules for stuff larger than Colossal to model this with anything like reasonable accuracy."

Brown bears and polar bears are Large, so even if one stops at the SRD definition of Colossal, that still means +3 size catagories.

tl;dr: That is a kaiju.

Actually, I think it still counts under "collossal". Remember that ponies are a good deal shorter than humans - Ursa Minor would be comparable to a dire bear, which is still (somehow) "large".

Let's say that they count as Small, being roughly 4' tall. One pony goes up to the height of the bear's claw, from head to hoof. Two stacked on top of each other are Medium, and go up to the Ursa Minor's shin. Four would be Large, and go up just past Ursa's elbow. Doubling that gives you Huge at the Ursa's shoulder, bringing the Ursa Minor up to Gargantuan.

Assuming that ponies:Ursa Minor::Ursa Minor:Ursa Major, the Ursa Major is Colossal+++. Given that Colossal+ the size of Godzilla, and it's the point where D&D says "we give up modeling this," that's pretty big.

Sources please.

I found it on Imgur (http://imgur.com/gallery/zskpVZK), and a reverse image search pulls up a slightly larger and uncropped version (http://suptg.thisisnotatrueending.com/archive/19208369/images/1337787108475.jpg) which was posted on /tg/. Going off of that, and with a lot of further digging, I finally found what purports to be the original source: a DeviantArt user by the name PrehistoricJack (http://prehistoricjack.deviantart.com/art/Mecha-Tyrannosaurus-rex-313306962). The only issue I see with this is that the initials on the image appear to be PSH, with the date 2008, while PrehistoricJack uploaded it in 2012. Add to that the fact that the other items posted on his DeviantArt page appear to be in a totally different style… yeah, I think we're back to square one with no idea who the original poster is. The Reddit thread even notes that it doesn't look like he's the original artist, but they don't offer any ideas as to the source.

EDIT: After a bit more digging (or rather, noticing something on the piece which I missed before), I found a post that has the artists name and copyright (http://s2.photobucket.com/user/xkostolny/media/Orthene-PH08.jpg.html) (which had been cropped out of ALL the other versions of the image). Unfortunately the website listed is currently blank, but a quick search of his name pulls up this portfolio of his work (http://www.shannonassociates.com/artist/perhaagensen#url=2254), including the T-rex.

If you're wondering how I found it, I noticed the name "Orthene" on the T-Rex's armor. Looked up "Orthene T-Rex", and I found that it was originally made for an ad for insecticide (http://mwb.com/work/t-rex/).

Seriously though, who here HASN'T dipped 2 levels in rogue or monk, or has 9 levels in ranger, because this is silly!

*raises hand*

I have never had levels in rouge or monk. I do love the ranger though, but have never gotten the 9th level. there is usually some sort of convoluted multiclassing going on, closest i got was the tamest looking 3.5 character build i ever made, a ranger with 3? levels of scout. never got to level 12 to get the 9th level of ranger. i think that campaign ended with me having 8 levels in ranger.

Edit: will post thread tax eventually

Ha! I remember that rhino! Yes from a short(ish) story about a professor and a unicorn, who argue over whether the rhino really is a unicorn or not.

"Ah, but professor, of course most poisons in that period were alkaloids. Have you ever put the hair of a rhino's horn into alkaloids?"

Actually, I think it still counts under "collossal". Remember that ponies are a good deal shorter than humans - Ursa Minor would be comparable to a dire bear, which is still (somehow) "large".

No, we didn't say it was three stories tall compared to ponies. That was an objective measure.

FATAL wasn't bad because of its sexual content (Even though it was 'reviewed' by highly immature twits) - it's bad because it's bad - Overly convoluted, bad math, stupidly convoluted, nonsensical setting, horrifically convoluted, terribly mathed, overly convoluted, excessively diced, and horribly cumbersome.

Because the sex crap was a part of the badness, simply enough. There are ways to handle sex tastefully (which the BOEF did, to some degree), or hilariously (which Nymphology reveled in), and FATAl does neither. And its one of the more memorable things that remains, since "UNEEDEED SEX REFERENCES!" is easier to remember than "while the other races are rolled in such a way to create a bell curve, the dwarven ages are not, making it equally likely that you're too young to be a feasible character or so old that you're already at max level when you begin play (since starting level is the square root of how long you've been working, dwarves start work at 200, and can start at higher than 600)." or similar.

Well, devils advocate here, I'm agreeing with you, but when, when questioned about the games unofficial subtitle "The Date Rape" game, the game's creator apocryphally responded "who said anything about dating?", coupled with the fact that fatal has detailed rules on every sex act, concensual or otherwise, has you roll on a table to determine your character's "attributes", and literally has a spell designed to facilitate necrophilia, people tend to associate it with sex.

Though again, I'm agreeing with you. It's not bad because sex. It's bad because it's B-A-D

Thank you!!

I was about to ask about Taulmaril, Catti-brie's bow from the Drizzt books, when I realized that it first appeared in 1989, while the TV show started in 1983 (and Taulmaril is slightly different in that it actually needed ammunition, although the quiver that came with it was infinitely full and the arrows did become force arrows upon being fired).

And also doens't have 3.5 stats, while Hank's energy bow(and all the children's magic items) received 3.5 stats in the "Animated Series Guide"

Actually, they did stat it out in out in a web article on The Lone Drow: Companions of the Hall (http://web.archive.org/web/20080424060219/http://ww2.wizards.com/Books/Wizards/?doc=fr_lonedrowstats)

Taulmaril (a.k.a. Heartseeker; +3 force keen elven longbow; see elven bow below), quiver of Anariel (alchemical silver arrows; see below)

Elven Bows: During their years of experience, elves have found that often archers are attacked without much chance to defend themselves. They have therefore created the elven shortbow and elven longbow. They are designed to fire with the same rate of fire and accuracy, and yet the elves can use them to fend off attacks until they can protect themselves with a better weapon or spell.

Elven bows are beautiful pieces of work, carved mostly from wood, and highly decorated and polished. All elven bows are masterwork bows. To fulfill their function the elf crafters have also given the bows metal inlays. These enable the bow to be used as a parrying weapon until the elf can draw a more suitable weapon. Meanwhile, the elf's bow has not been damaged by the attack and can be used again.

If used as an offensive weapon, an elven shortbow acts as a one-handed melee weapon that deals 1d4 points of bludgeoning damage and an elven longbow acts as two-handed melee weapon that deals 1d6 points of bludgeoning damage. The wielder does not get any masterwork or enhancement bonuses when using the bow to attack in melee. These bows weigh twice that of their standard counterparts and have a hardness of 8 and 5 hit points each. Elven shortbows cost 360 gp and elven longbows cost 450 gp.

Force Weapon Property: On a successful hit, a force weapon emits a powerful jolt of magical force. The magical force does not harm the weapon's wielder. Force weapons deal +1d6 points of force damage on a successful hit. If the weapon successfully hits a target protected by a force effect, such as a shield spell or bracers of armor, it might dispel the force effect in addition to damaging the target. Make a dispel check (1d20+10) against the effect (DC 11 + caster level). If the check succeeds, the force effect is dispelled (if a spell) or suppressed for 1d4 rounds (if a magic item). Ranged weapons bestow this property on their ammunition. Incorporeal creatures get no miss chance against force weapons.

This property first appeared in the Arms and Equipment Guide and has been updated.

Moderate evocation; CL 11th; Craft Magic Arms and Armor, wall of force; Price +3 bonus.

Quiver of Anariel:Quivers of Anariel appear to be typical arrow containers capable of holding a score of arrows. However, the quivers automatically replenish themselves with standard or magical arrows, such that they are always full. Some quivers also create arrows made of special materials, such as adamantine, cold iron, or alchemical silver.

Once an arrow it taken from the quiver, it must be used within 1 round or it vanishes.

Moderate conjuration; CL 7th; Craft Wondrous Item, magic weapon, minor creation; Price 28,000 gp (standard arrows), 29,000 gp (masterwork arrows), 32,000 gp (+1 arrows), 44,000 gp (+2 arrows), 64,000 gp (+3 arrows), 92,000 gp (+4 arrows), 128,000 gp (+5 arrows); Add an additional +6,000 gp for adamantine arrows, +4,005 gp for cold iron arrows, or +200 gp for alchemical silver arrows; Weight 1 lb.

Equestria Girls: Rainbow Rocks, the sequel to My Little Pony: Equestria Girls, which is a movie based on My Little Pony, Friendship is Magic, in which newly crowned Princess Twilight Sparkle must travel through a magic mirror to the human world to retrive a powerful magical artifact that was stolen by her mentor's evil former student.

The sequal involves her being called back to the human world by her friends there(basically human versions of her pony friends-there's a human Twilight over there too somewhere, but she goes to a different high school) to help win a Battle of the Bands with supernatural consequences.

Well, not every creature can throw rocks with any great skill. It would be possible to hurl rocks, yes, but you'd be taking improvised weapon penalties, and you wouldn't have great range. Plus, it's possible that aforementioned golem is sort of like a scaled-up arbalester, and the catapult part of them can be enchanted or enhanced on some fashion.

...Now I really want to make a arbalester-style walking cannon thing.

Rater202

Craft Magical Arms and Armor and Craft Wonderous Items are prerequisires for golem srafting, right?

Those two togeher could easily be used to make a Quiver of plen ty tyoe item to supply infinite projectiles, as well as place a permamant True Shot enchantmeanrt on the catepult.

Use a strong enough frame(permanent Ironwood spells on an already sturdy wood for wooden parts, metal parts are mithril or adamantine, leather parts, if any, are dragon hide, and layer as many protection from energy/alignment/magic spells on it are as feasibly) then a suficiently powerful caster could have an expensive but incredibly efficient sige weapon-particularly if an animate object enchantment were added so that the catapult/trebuchet ims and reloads itself.

Any caster that can build something like that could charge several hundred times it's cost if manufacturing on commission.

Actually, I think the arm has better mechanics for throwing. Because an arm can be used to throw in the same way as a catapult; just hold the arm straight behind yourself, then move it up/forward while keeping the arm straight. You'll get a lot less distance than if you just threw it shot-put style.

But the forces involved are probably much higher in a catapult. Which is why arrows are shot by bows and crossbows, instead of being thrown by hand.

Yeah, you can get a lot more tension in a catapult than you can in an arm. That equates to either longer distance or more force on impact (or both of we take height into account).

Joe the Rat
2014-11-06, 08:27 AM
At first glance, yes, but this is complicated by how the Siegeacon moves. We can reasonably make assumptions about the amount of force that can be generated by the catapult mechanism. The arms of the golem are notably longer, offering greater leverage, but we don't know how much force it can generate - how hard and fast it can throw. If we assume something akin to "muscle-like" power, then I'd wager the sling-shot effect here will give you a harder launch. But if it's all "wizard did it" magic, all bets are off.

You could easily interpret the picture as the Golem loading the catapult, or retrieving the rock from the catapult to huck at someone.

Spiryt

Actually, no, forces involved in throwing any heavier stuff are often going to be far greater than in bow shooting.

Reason to use a bow is generally velocity, not force, before all other things.

No matter of force put in, human hand cannot comfortably move quite as fast as bow arms.

But the only actual physics available about golem arm is 'can't move at all', so it's all kinda moot. :smallamused:

You know, there is no reason not to train the golems in olympic disciplines like shot put in order to amplify their throwing capabilities. I kind of have this whole idea of Greek, sport-themed golem army: javeliners, pankrationists, discus throwers and so on. This would be so much more interesting then the regular crude brawlers you encounter.

The arm has a much greater mass than the catapult's lever, reducing the amount of force acted on the payload. The joint also does not have the same leverage or sheer explosive force as the torsion on a catapult's spring.

Which are both a result of your arm being made out of flesh and bone, instead of a material similar to the catapult. The catapult has a spring, an arm has an elbow, shoulder, and wrist you can extract force from.

It depends on how the forces work, but the advantage of the spring is that it can have incredible force without a 'limiter', while an arm, which needs to be able to move freely in at least two directions, has to have forces that are usually balanced. To get a joint to have the same force as a catapult, it needs two springs/winches, and a way for them to release and... hmm... time to start drawing up schematics for an arm that uses wound springs/cords for joints balanced to be capable of fine movement, yet also able to have a quick-release... if I weren't lazy.

Or magic to move with spring-like force.

About an hour into a society module (which was supposed to take 2 four/five hour sessions), my paladin asked the mayor why he was evil, to his face, at a banquet, in front of the whole town. That brought the entire module down on our heads all at once as the entire town bum-rushed us. We survived. Per society rules we beat the module and got to level, after 2 hours.

@ Sartharina

the whole town was an evil cult trying to cover up blah blah blah I didn't catch all the details since we murdered everybody. Not on purpose mind you, they all fell on my sword... a lot of people fall on my sword.

It was "The Feast of Ravenmoore" module I'm pretty sure, if that clears anything up.

EDIT: The DM's fault really. He shouldn't have expected tact from a party that consisted of a Paladin, a Fighter, and a Barbarian. The fourth guy was some kind of caster... a pregen bard or something. I wasn't a scan and smite paladin either (I had max ranks in Diplomacy), it just worked out that way that one session. My character was questioning the guy on some things that didn't make sense and it... went south very quickly.

@ Erik I guess it was written in the module that that is how the NPCs would respond if outed, we just happened to conveniently have them all gathered in one place. The DM was in a bit of a bind with that one, though he could have handled it differently.

The fighter had a 30 AC and my LoH healed 2d6+4, we were never in any real danger honestly, except from will saves. Well, the others were weak to will saves, I had Paladin saves with an 18 charisma.

Why they chose to attack you like that though is stupid, and the GM should feel bad.

In fact, the game shows us that not having a 'soul' is in no way reason for the DM to say you can't play your character anymore. Warforged may or may not have a soul, and I believe undead don't have one either. Outsiders are explicitly described as having no separate soul and body.

Unintelligent undead don't have souls, but intelligent ones either have or are souls according to Magic Jar. Outsiders have their soul and body as one unit, as do elementals.

What are you thinking about possibly branching out a bit and adding captions and speech bubbles to fantasy art?

The second one was actually posted by the original artist himself.

I've seen some really funny captions to normal pictures on occasion, and there should probably be a huge potential for doing them with fantasy art. I'd really love to see what ideas you might come up with.

"Separate" being the keyword. It's just as accurate to say they don't have a body and are souls.

Would still work. Technically the 'soul' would leave the 'body' in that case, except they wouldn't have a body. So the soul would have to leave something that doesn't exist, which would logically result in nothing happening.

I could have sworn that not have a soul and a body that are spereate meant thart the soul was the body and/or vice versa.

Would still work. Technically the 'soul' would leave the 'body' in that case, except they wouldn't have a body. So the soul would have to leave something that doesn't exist, which would logically result in nothing happening.

If the soul is the body, it would result in the soul leaving itself, which would mean that it would rend it self apart, thus ceasing to exist.

Which makes sense-most nonprestige class outsiders can't be resurrected and since they can only be killed in their native plane of by being called, and thus have nowhere for their soul to go anyway, it's easy to interpret non resurrectability as a result of physical destruction destroying the creature utterly.

Prince Raven

Actually what happens when an outsider dies in another plane is their essence goes back to their home plane to be eventually reborn, which usually results in a loss of power.
However, killing an outsider on their home plane completely obliterates them.

Rater202
2014-11-16, 10:08 PM
Yes, that is exactly what I said.

They can only be killed for real on their home plane, or if they were called witrh a calling effect.

When killed for real, an outsider is gone forever.

"That's exactly what I said, now I'm going to completely contradict the first thing you said"

... What?

An outsider can onlly be killed, for real, on thir home plane, or, if they are summoned with a calling effect.

In such an event, an Outsider is destroyed utterly-no chance of resurrection because there's nothing left to resurrect.

If Summoned to an other plain by a summoning effect, or otherwise as an extraplaner rather than native, and klilled, then all that happens is they go home, essentially.

You and I are essentially both rewording that point.

Hiro Protagonest
2014-11-16, 10:43 PM
Doesn't an outsider summoned with a Calling effect or who accessed the material plane through some portal still regenerate on their home plane, and Summoning is either a generic copy of something or they just instantly teleport back?

Prince Raven
2014-11-16, 10:48 PM
It is my understanding that a called/portal'd in outsider that dies in another plane returns to their home plane to be reborn, while a summoned outsider is more like an astral projection that simply disappears leaving the original unaffected.
