View Full Version : Pathfinder Let's Vote up an Elder Evil! [3.P]

Tanuki Tales

Overview

Elder Evils was one of my favorite books that was printed under 3.X and I always wished I had the chance to either play through a campaign based around one or run one myself. I've seen in the past a few homebrewed Elder Evils and they were always fun to read over, if not usually gorgeous works of homebrewing. So, I feel like it might do the community, as a whole, a service if we made more of these things for GMs/DMs to be inspired on using in their campaigns. So, here's yet another "Let's Vote Up" thread; even though this thread has the Pathfinder tag, it has more a blending of 3.X and Pathfinder (or "3.P") in mind for the execution of its rules and the breadth of material accessible to be used.

Phase 1: Concept

We'll be starting off by taking basic concepts for what the Elder Evil is, which should be no longer than one or two sentences. The first thirty two concepts submitted will make up the voting body for this first phase and each person can submit up to three different concepts. From there we'll do multiple rounds of voting (losing half of the submitted concepts each round) until only one concept stands supreme. At that point, we'll move on to the next phase of creating this blasphemy against mortals and gods alike.

I am totally on board with this:

1. Dread God of Medicine

2. Dweller on the Threshold

3. All-Seeing Eyes

Good-aligned Assimilation Plot-type 'Savior' Elder Evil

Metafictional 'all of reality is a fictional story and I must enlighten them' Narrative Causality Elder Evil.

An Elder Evil from the future that hates its existence but cannot self-terminate, so it's trying to destroy the present world to induce a temporal paradox self-abortion.

The universe has contracted cancer....and its intelligent.

A being of dark matter whose goal is to turn all of the universe into dark matter and empty space so that it can be more comfortable.

A god-fetus that eat stars and destroys planets for their energy, in the vain hope of ascending to true godhood.

A living weapon created by the forces of good to destroy all evil. However, it is unable to distinguish between those who perform evil acts and those who are merely capable of doing so (AKA: All sentient creatures on the Material Plane).

EDIT: Minor editing, making things a little clearer.

A mage-king with a god complex: immortal yet entombed in his palace. He is finally found by someone and tricks them to freeing him.

A perfect storm: a storm's a'brewin', and it's sentient!

A hive mind that expands by infecting sentient beings

A chained child spider-god breaks free of its prison and with the innocence of of a child seeks to spread his arachnid progeny across the planes.

The oldest qlippoth rises from the deepest levels of the Abyss to destroy every living being on the Material Plane and to convert the plane into a new Abyss--one that hasn't been taught how to make demons out of souls, where the qlippoth can thrive before turning back to destroy demonkind forever.

Someone steals the Ihystear from Asmodeus and uses it to animate Ihys as an undead. The other half of the two first gods and the original god of good, becomes animated as an undead and only wishes to destroy everything he and his brother created.

25. A massive worm slowly chews its way up and down the Spire around which Sigil is built (and around which the entire multiverse rotates), weakening its structure until the planes collapse in on each other (becoming coterminous in the process). Someone needs to stop the Spire-Eater, and find a way to repair the damage that it has done – but how?

26. A swarm of countless insectoid/reptilian monstrosities arrives, seemingly from another planet within the Prime Material Plane, and begins eating everything in its wake, even the very earth itself. As it feeds, its numbers only grow. The magic of the gods is helpless to stop The Swarm; it falls outside the influence of even the divine. What can be done in the fact of such a threat, or, if it cannot be defeated, can The Swarm at least be contained?

[eta: let's number all of our entries now, for easier voting later.]

20. A being from outside all known cosmology tries to merge this multiverse (Great Wheel and all associated cosmology) with a twin anti-multiverse (with its own version of the Great Wheel, etc) in order to annihilate both for some inscrutable purpose. As each multiverse's planes become coterminous and teleportation begins to be misdirected between multiverses, the denizens of each must cope with the linguistic/cultural barriers and the fact that their versions of positive and negative as well as elemental and alignment-based energies are opposite that of the other multiverse. Can they cooperate long enough to discover the cause and stabilize the barrier between multiverses before all is lost, or will misunderstandings and xenophobia drag two realms to their doom?

28. Far-Realms (http://forgottenrealms.wikia.com/wiki/Far_Realm) being, beyond morality (http://www.d20pfsrd.com/classes/core-classes/wizard/arcane-discoveries/arcane-discoveries-paizo/beyond-morality-su), so perhaps not strictly "evil" and is contextually aware of all out-of context scenarios, including the player's communications, the DM's prep for the sessions, and all of the player's actions. Perhaps some sort of insanity to counterplay this, buy generally should have powers that can extend out of the game.

29. Ozodrin (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?320374-Tooth-and-Tentacle-Remix-3-P-PEACH) who has transcended to EE status. Simple plug, but it's what I want  Creatively done, perhaps a Bedlam. http://coraline.wikia.com/wiki/Beldam_%28Other_Mother%29

Oh, I hadn't noticed that! And here I was about submit another one (not as good as my first three, so it will remain forever secret unless someone else also comes up with it). That puts us at 22 entries, yes?

Then I'll start us off at 22.

22. High atop a mountain at the edge of the world, a powerful entity of Good has stood for thousands upon thousands of year, watching. One morning, leaders of nations and religions the world over wake from a dream where it's ten thousand fiery eyes gazed at them, and it whispered with a voice like thunder.

We judge you unworthy.

23. The Plane of Shadow, always coterminous with the Material Plane, has begun to slowly encroach on its light-born twin. Shadows begin to detach from their hosts, darkness begins to seep from caves and the deeps, and the shadowy sun of that world will finally slay its hated sibling.

24. The First Tree is cut down by a pair of exceptionally stupid human loggers. The World wakes up, and is pissed about it. Nature revolts against the pride of mortalkind, tearing down their great works as forests take back what belongs to The World by right.

Unsure as to what we are on now (seriously, people, stop resetting the list), so I will number mine in the only fitting way.

A1: The better angels of our nature, shrouded in flesh and robed in stars. They've come to save us from ourselves, purging sin and blasphemy from this wretched world.

A2: Love. The kind of love that leaves you feeling low and wretched, because you just aren't good enough. The kind of love that leaves you drunk in the gutter, dying by bits and pieces and drips and drops. The kind of love that murders you, the lone and friendless cur that you are.

The kind of love that destroys you... and you thank it for the privilege. Because you never realized how ugly you are.

A3: An idiot language-god, whose every part of speech destroys culture and erudition. It is simple enough that everyone can learn it. And soon, everyone will. (http://web.archive.org/web/20080307074807/http://plif.courageunfettered.com/archive/wc072.gif)

Eh, whatever, I know none of my ideas are going to picked. :p.

29: Ever wondered what happens when your Divine Rank is a negative number?

30: A primordial force of Hunger has lay dormant since shortly after life began, too weak from its own starvation to do anything. Some sorcerer just fed it a Gloom Golem, its first meal, to see what would happen.

31: Reality is a locked cage around oblivion. The KEY has woken up and is tearing planes apart in search of the keyhole.

32. The obliterated and shattered mind of what used to be a Demiurge is trying to fight and claw its way back into existance. Its succeeding, and more than a little pissed off at all of reality.

Alright folks, this is how this will work: You will get 16 votes to cast in this first round, with only one vote being able to be cast for any one entry. Voting will remain open until 11:59 pm EST on the 13th, at which point the bottom sixteen concepts will be eliminated and the remaining concepts will move on to the next round!

Let's go with the:

Assymilating Destroyer
Suicidal Timeline Destroyer
Universal Cancer
Spire Eater
Ascended Ozodrin
Divine Judge
Shadow Sun
Gaea (should be Gaia)
Rightious Host
Poisinous Love
Negative Divinity
Only Zul
Fractured Demiurge.

Also, should we make this a top 3 or top 5 Elder Evils competition? Just because this is the Homebrew section, and we could totally make the top 5 big baddies if we wanted to.

Sapient Perfect Storm

Anthropomorphic Hunger
Dread God of Medicine

That's up to everyone else here, but if we go that way I'd say go with the happy medium number of top 4, since that's how the breaking down of the concept pool will eventually lead us (32 => 16 => 8 => 4 => 2 => 1). :smalltongue:

I guess my idea is kind of The Anti-Monitor. Though instead of the Anti-Multiverse being evil, it has roughly the same distribution of moral and ethical philosophies but the magic surrounding them has a reversed polarity. Celestials and Anti-Celestials would agree with each other if they understood each other, but they detect and affect each other as if they were Chaotic Evil and using Anarchic Unholy powers. Likewise, Anti-Fire deals Cold damage. The less intelligent Fire and Anti-Fire Elementals mistake each other for Water and Anti-Water Elementals. Anti-Inflict Wounds heals the Living. Etc.

4th Wall Breaker has same serious potential for mindscrew and startling revelations. Each Sign of its coming could also come with a Meta Sign, where the DM rolls dice and then does something like reaching across the table and sliding someone's character sheet a few inches or flipping it over.

Is the end result of Idiot Language-God that everyone communicates through varying inflections of YOLO?

I say we go for top 4.

Reminder: approximately 17 hours, 30 minutes until voting concludes. What will be done regarding the very likely tie for the middle spot? If, for example, the entries that placed 12th through 19th all got five votes, will the next round be selecting the best eight out of nineteen Elder Evils? It seems unfair to eliminate entries alphabetically or through random chance.

I recommend that we select our favorite eight from the above twenty submissions, to nudge the number back to the standard powers-of-two-based bracket. Last round had a duration of four days; following this pattern, voting for round 2 will end at 11:59 PM on Monday, November 17th. You may vote for up to eight of the above options, and may the best (or worst) Evil win!

From Kayzan's original post:

29: Ever wondered what happens when your Divine Rank is a negative number?
I guess it's up to us to find out, once we build the Elder Evil.

Also, you only get one vote this round, not two. I assume your vote is for Poisonous Love, because Divine Judge isn't in the running this round :smalltongue:

It looks like Negative Divinity won.

I think the most interesting way to flesh this one out is to come up with something analogous to Negative Temperature (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Negative_temperature). Normally we wouldn't think that concept makes sense, but when you get really precise, temperature is actually based on energy AND entropy. Under abnormal conditions, you can have something that can't gain more than a certain amount of energy without starting to lose entropy, and beyond that point it has a negative temperature which is functionally hotter than an infinite positive temperature. In standard D&D lore, worship is comparable to energy for deities and only causes their Divine Rank to increase. The million dollar question is, can we modify the lore slightly so that there is some other factor involved in Divine Rank which is comparable to entropy and for which we can justify a Divine Rank reversal under some interesting conditions?

I guess if the other part of the equation was willingness to be worshipped, then we could flesh it out as a former god of antitheism/misotheism whose self-loathing at being worshipped crossed a critical threshold that flipped it into an anti-god whose power exceeds that of all other deities.

Alright, let's see some more brainstorming/discussion on this biggest of big bads.

We were all destroyed by the Negative Divinity. Choosing it as the winner brought it into existence. :smalltongue:

For me, at least, it's that finals week is coming up. Finals are icky and keep me from homebrewing. I wish homebrewing was a major.

First off, I think a negative divinity would be a force for the static universe from before creation. Such a being might not even be able to comprehend our mortal existence as anything more than the scurrying of ants. It may instead see us as termites eating away at the foundations of its home, creating chaos and needing to be exterminated.

For what I feel would be a good example of a negative divinity is The Nothing from The Neverending Story.

Perhaps it's somehow related to the Spire of Sigil? And sometimes, it grows?

Here's an idea. Gods in D&D are uniformly great and glorious beings, worshiped and admired, champions of a cause, powerful and awe-inspiring. Even when their portfolios aren't all that impressive (like being God of Kobolds), they are impressive. Godhood is the ultimate goal, once you zoom out enough, for anyone that aspires to be more than ordinary. Is your goal in life to become a baker? Alright, boom, you're a baker, what now? You want your own bakery? Boom, you have it. What now? You want to be the greatest baker in all the land, baking for kings and queens, a household name renowned throughout the world? Okay, boom, done. Eventually, you either settle for what you have, or you get to 'God of Baking'. It's the greatest thing to be in D&D.

A being that is the ultimate exemplar of destroying that which is divine is something like a God of Misotheism (as previously suggested). Or it's something that cleaves very close to previously existing Elder Evils, like Pandorym.

So, my suggestion is that the Negative Divinity is not the opposition of divinity, but the vacuous lack of it. It is the motivational black hole that makes you want to sit on your couch and do literally nothing rather than read a book, or learn a language, or feed the homeless, or call your mum. It is the spiteful jealousy that causes you, upon seeing someone achieve greatness, to privately nitpick their work, or condemn them as attention whores, while you stare at your Steam library for half an hour and then decide to take a nap because there's nothing to do. It is the tiresome ennui that, when an exciting and life-changing opportunity finally hits you, you shy away because it probably wont work out anyway and just think of all the youtube channels you'll get behind on.

The Negative Divinity is both weak and weakness. It is slow, and weighs others down. It is dumb and makes others dumber for interacting with it. It is ugly and makes the world uglier by being in it. It is pitiful and cowardly, tiny and forgettable, loathed and ignored, it believes in nothing, it has nothing, it gives nothing. It would be no challenge for any adventurer to dispatch, save that nothing meritorious can survive its presence. Any arrow shot with enough skill to harm it is, by definition, too above-mediocrity to approach it. Any warrior would be caught in its Sub-Parity Event Horizon long before they could land a sword-blow. Magic? A fireball is too awesome to get within a mile of the thing. A gated Solar? Obviously not. Some sort of technically-not-magical orbital railgun rigged up with walls of force and connected ring-gates that fires a rod of adamantium at just over the speed of light? That sentence can't even exist on the same plane.

It does not destroy Gods. Power of that scale is antithetical to it. No, it makes the Gods lose interest in being Gods. It subtracts from what makes them a God until they aren't one. It is a Negative Divinity.
Its name is Shinji. God I hate Shinji.

Xefas, I think you just justified the Medieval Stasis and not-Tippyverse of most settings. It's not that wizards can't revolutionize the world, it's just...meh, they'll do it later. Eventually. Yeah, eventually sounds better.

I love it.

I like that conception of negative divinity because it is clearly distinct from the godkiller Pandorym from Elder Evils the book. This negative divinity may not even actually be actively malevolent; it might just be the embodiment of the medieval concept of "acedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Acedia)", or sloth.

Now I'm trying to think about what its sign would do to people. Stop entropy? Slow down time? Put everyone to sleep? Going off of what Kazyan said, maybe the political and cultural paralysis of the world is the negative divinity's 'faint' sign, and it's been active for millenia.

That does sound good... in fact, you could have the PCs kind of start the whole thing. The problem isn't that the Elder Evil is growing stronger and will end the world, the problem is that the world is already in trouble, and the continued presence of the Elder Evil is impeding efforts to save it. To stop the apocalypse, someone has to go deal with it... somehow.

If people want to make the default campaign for it involve more severe signs, perhaps to deal with it it has to be woken up all the way. So the people starting the apocalypse are trying to stop a different apocalypse, and use the PCs as cat's paws to deal with the Elder Evil.

Actually, now that I think about it, something like that could even be an Elder Neutral or Elder Good. You know all the RAW cheese that lets wizards become unstoppable gods conquering entire countries with extraplanar construct armies that are invincible to everything?

Well, it isn't that those don't work. They would, if anybody tried them. But no one does, not because of any actual logical reason, but because the Elder Evil won't let them. A mild sign is actually good for the campaign setting, because it keeps people from getting too ambitious and wrecking things irretrievably.

Yeah, I get the sense this conception of Negative Divinity is very TN. It's cosmic inertia, which is actually a really good thing when you want things to run smoothly or progress slow enough for human minds to catch up.

I'd dare say it becomes an Elder Evil when its effects become cancerous, though. Perhaps a particularly insane diabolic cult wants it to transform the world into largely will-less slaves to their masters, uncaring of the fact it might effect them too, or druids who want the inevitable march of progress to stop (such as in Eberron). Either way, I get the sense people don't worship it so much as summon it to enforce the status quo utterly.

Narrative themes are the promise and the dangers of change, and the seductive but poisonous nature of the enforcing status the quo (because enforcing the status quo usually means enforcing its nasty bits; privileges at the expense of others, screwing over the little guy, toxic ideals of gender..).

EDIT: Also, I'd say there hasn't been a mild sign; it only really starts becoming a Sign of the Apocalypse when it starts affecting the nature of the cosmos and individual lives directly. On the mystical side of things, time starts losing direction, initially only causing travel times and schedules to seem frustratingly but mundanely unpredictable, at higher levels throwing down temporal anomalies everywhere while starting to charge items associated with the mundane and normal with energy that disrupts divine spells and causes people to become indifferent and apathetic, perhaps even despairing. If it wins, time and the world will enter a bizarre state of mechanical equilibrium; going forward without any degree of emotional or eventful friction whatsoever to change events for better or worse. Or more bluntly; everyone will be passionless grey drones living out a half-life with no hope or expectation of change to things as they already are, semi-mindlessly acting out their lives with no real awareness of time passing, neither looking to the future or past, living eternally in a ceaseless, dull moment. And all too aware of this, and aware that there could be something more...but they can never quite work up the effort to find it. Moving, but never going anywhere, much like time itself does in the grey world (it hasn't stopped, but honestly, if nothing ever changes, then what's the point?).

I have no passion, and I must scream.
