"People speak sometimes about the 'bestial' cruelty of man, but that is terribly unjust and offensive to beasts. No animal could ever be so cruel as a man, so artfully, so artistically cruel." ~Fyodor Dostoyevsky

The Mythic Lycanthrope

In days long past, the Titan, Mutation, presided over a writhing world of rapid growth and decay which held no greater significance than to languish in the thrill of life and change. In the putrid, bacterial waters of her many oceans and mires, her savage, numberless souls constantly fed upon one another, evolving again and again with each kill and each meal, spinning for themselves new advantages from the flesh of their body, changing themselves into strange and deadly arrays optimized for further dominance and consumption, until they too, must meet their end, and their new beginning, as the meal of a stronger predator, and the material by which further evolution could take place.

As a planet inhabited solely by staggering billions of apex predators, Mutation presented one of the greatest challenges for the Divine Host when they sought to take the chaotic void of the Titans for themselves - a challenge delegated to the one among the Lawgivers that they feared most, not their most powerful champion, in the form of the Sun, but to the one whose truthless nature allowed her to darken the Sun's unstoppable light, to melt his unbreakable heart, and to turn aside his unimpeachable valor. The Moon was never the smartest god, but she approached her problems from angles that greater minds had never even considered, she was not the strongest, but her victory conditions rarely required her to be, and rarely aligned with her opponent's.

The whole story of how she defeated Mutation is one for another time. But suffice it to say that the legend goes that, in their final confrontation, Mutation's true form revealed itself to be a titanic serpentine horror, bristling with the mouths of all the hungry souls she had cannibalized from herself in the pursuit of change. The Moon fought as well as she could, only to be slain and consumed, subsumed into Mutation's body. From there, the primal goddess was torn apart and her essence replicated, in order to feed the Titan's next evolution. But her essence didn't stop replicating. It kept growing and growing, sprouting like a cancer throughout Mutation's body, immune to retaliation, as the Titan's legend had already accepted her as a part of itself, until the Moon finally metastasized to Mutation's heart, and devoured it from the inside.

This was the ingenuity that the Moon wished to instill in her children, as the other gods gleefully sowed their creations all throughout their conquered multiverse. But those gods, even the other Lawgivers, feared what she might create if she were given complete freedom to do as she willed, and so they made a pact with her, paying some terrible price in exchange for her restraint in the crafting of the Wheel and its inhabitants.

They would find out too late that she did not consider the alteration of pre-existing creatures as being synonymous with creating wholly new ones. With a wry smirk, she misted the core of their new cosmos, the Prime Material Plane, with blood from Mutation's trapped heart, gifting all that would be born there with a heavily diluted version of the Titan's evolution - over time, things would change from the Gods' design, life would sprout where it should not, it would adapt to live where it should not, and it would surprise the Gods when it should not. The more cautious among the Divine Host reeled with fury or distaste at her disregard for the perfect order they envisioned, but not a single one dared imply that the Moon had broken her word.

In the millennia since, many strange quirks and derivations of the lifeforms made by the Gods have arisen as a result of the Moon's actions. Lycanthropy is one of them. But, the primordial origin of the cursed disease offers a unique opportunity for creatures endowed with a mythic narrative - by giving their legend fangs, they may call to the blood of Mutation in the Lycanthropic curse, and devour it, making Lycanthropy a part of their story, and a part of themselves in a deeply intimate fashion, creating hybridized monsters greater than any common were-beast.

New Feat: Swallowing The Feral Heart
Prerequisite: You must be a Lycanthrope, whether natural or afflicted, and have at least One Mythos
Benefit: Your Lycanthropy is consumed, removing the Lycanthrope template from you, and making you immune to further exposure to Lycanthropy or Entomanothropy. As a special case, even though this technically prevents you from retroactively qualifying for the prerequisites of this feat, you do not lose this feat or its benefits.

In exchange, the animal that your Lycanthropy was based off of becomes your Inner Beast, giving form to new Mythos at your disposal. Note that this feat is intended to cover terrestrial mammals, although similar supplements could exist for aquatic and avian animals, Entomanothropes, or especially exotic mammalian Lycanthropes that do not fit the following abilities. While the most common Lycanthropes are Werewolves and Wererats, following by the slightly less common Boars, Bears, and Tigers, there are some Mythic Lycanthropes in the world with much rarer, or even unique, Inner Beasts due to the intercession of the Moon, or her agents, which sometimes create a specialized strain of Lycanthropy to infect a mythic character with as a gift or a form of payment, after teaching them of the existence of this feat. The Moon enjoys matching a character with an animal symbolic of their personality or abilities.

You gain the ability to speak to animals, allowing you to use social skills and other language-dependent effects to influence them. You take a -2 penalty on all Charisma-based skill checks made to influence animals that are natural predators or enemies of your Inner Beast, and a +2 bonus on such checks against animals that are natural prey for your Inner Beast. (For example, a Mythic Were-Jackal Olethrofex would gain a bonus when influencing rats or antelope, while a Mythic Were-Antelope Kathodos would take a penalty while influencing a jackal or lion.)

Choose one Mythos-granting class that you have levels in. You may treat the following Mythos as if they belonged to that class.

Exceptional Mythos

Flesh of the Wild Places
Prerequisite: -

You gain the [Shapechanger] subtype, and the ability to enter your Beast Form. You require a full-round action to change from your normal shape to your Beast Form or vice versa, or a move action to change from your Hybrid Form (if you have one) to your Beast Form or vice versa.

In your Beast Form, your shape changes to become a member of the same species as your Inner Beast. When you change, incompatible equipment drops to the ground, unharmed. Your Beast Form's exact features are consistent through each transformation, and just as unique as your normal form, often bearing similar characteristics (for example, if you have a very distinctive facial scar, it will likely appear on your Beast Form as well). When acquiring this Mythos, choose the following block of statistic alterations that best represent the animal you become. Feel free to tweak or create new configurations of similar power if there is nothing to your liking.

Regardless of the configuration you choose, all Beast Forms have the Low-Light Vision and Scent special qualities, and gain the benefits of the Track feat. If your size changes as a result of your Beast Form, adjust your Strength, Dexterity, Constitution, and Natural Armor accordingly (MM pg291). Any ability changes listed are in addition to those. While in Beast Form, you are treated as the most beneficial of either your natural Type or the Animal Type at any given time, but you lose the natural weapons, natural armor, and movement speeds granted by your original shape.

Rodent Shape
Your size changes to Tiny.
Your base speed becomes 15ft, and you gain a Climb speed equal to your land speed.
You have a natural bite attack which deals a base 1d3 damage.
You lose any racial natural armor bonuses.

Scavenger Shape
Your size changes to Small.
Your base speed becomes 40ft.
You have either a single natural bite attack that deals 1d4 damage, or two secondary natural claw attacks that deal 1d3 damage.
+1 natural armor bonus.
You gain a +2 racial bonus on Spot, Listen, Search, and Survival checks.

Predator Shape
Your size changes to Medium.
Your base speed becomes 50ft.
You gain a +2 bonus to your Constitution.
You have either a single natural bite attack that deals 1d6 damage, or two secondary natural claw attacks that deal 1d4 damage.
+2 natural armor bonus.
If you have a natural bite attack, you also gain a Trip special ability, allowing you to make a free trip attempt against the victim of a successful bite attack, without provoking an attack of opportunity or allowing the opponent a chance to counter-trip if you fail. If you have two claw attacks, you also gain a Rend special ability, dealing an automatic (1d4+strength modifier) additional damage when you hit a single target with both claw attacks in a single round.

Graceful Shape
Your size changes to Medium.
Your base speed becomes 50ft.
You gain a +4 bonus to your Dexterity.
You gain a +4 bonus on Balance, Escape Artist, Hide, Jump, Move Silently, Survival, and Tumble checks.
+1 natural armor bonus.

Hulking Shape
Your size changes to Large.
Your base speed becomes 40ft.
You have either a single bite attack that deals 1d8 damage, or two secondary claw attacks that deal 1d6 damage.
+2 natural armor bonus.

Moon-Scarred Titanspawn Invincibility
Prerequisite: -

You gain Endurance and Diehard as bonus feats.

You have Damage Reduction X/Silver where X is equal to 1/2 your class level. While you are in your Hybrid or Beast Form (if you have them), this increases to be equal to your class level.

At 10th level, the Damage Reduction granted by this Mythos becomes X/Silver and Magic.

Monstrous Beast-Skin Exhibition
Prerequisite: -

You gain the [Shapechanger] subtype, and the ability to enter your Hybrid Form. You require a move action to change from your normal shape or Beast Form (if you have) to your Hybrid Form, and vice versa. However, whenever you go into a Rage, you may choose to also change to your Hybrid Form without requiring an action at all.

In your Hybrid Form, you are still largely humanoid in shape, but starkly inhuman in appearance, mixing many of the qualities of your Inner Beast into your normal form, such as fur, fangs, claws, digitigrade legs, an animal-like muzzle, a tail, and a hunched posture. In your Hybrid Form, you gain the Low-Light Vision and Scent special qualities, as well as either a natural bite attack that deals 1d6 base damage for a medium creature, or two secondary natural claw attacks that deal 1d4 base damage for a medium creature (once chosen, your choice of natural weapon is consistent throughout each transformation).

In addition, choose two ability scores symbolic of your Inner Beast. While in Hybrid Form, you gain a +2 bonus to both abilities. Once chosen, this choice cannot be altered. While most creatures are associated with physical ability bonuses, others have more leeway. One Mythic Werefox might choose bonuses to Intelligence and Wisdom, due to the Fox's place as a symbol of cunning and cleverness. Another Mythic Werefox might choose Dexterity and Charisma, viewing the Fox as something aloof, mysterious, and beautiful.

Advanced
Shape of the Fearsome Beast: To take this manifestation, your Inner Beast must be Medium or larger. You gain the Powerful Build special quality (Whenever you are subject to a size modifier for an opposed check, you are treated as one size larger if doing so is advantageous. You are also considered one size larger when determining whether a creature's special attacks based on size can affect you. You can use weapons designed for a creature one size larger than yourself without penalty.) and your natural weapons are treated as being one size category larger for the purposes of damage.

Shape of the Wily Beast: To take this manifestation, your Inner Beast must be Small or smaller. You gain the Slight Build special quality (Whenever you are subject to a size modifier for an opposed check, you are treated as one size smaller if doing so is advantageous. You are also considered one size smaller when attempting to squeeze through a restrictive space. You can use weapons designed for a creature one size smaller than yourself without penalty.) In addition, Escape Artist, Hide, and Move Silently are always considered class skills for you.

Mutant Cursebearer Legacy
Prerequisite: One of the 'Flesh of the Wild Places' or 'Monstrous Beast-Skin Exhibition' Mythos

You become immune to all disease, and gain a +4 racial bonus on saving throws against curses (anything that would be removed by the Remove Curse spell).

As a full-round action, you may cure a character afflicted with Lycanthropy with an excruciating touch, as long as they have been infected no longer than (your class level) days, and if their humanoid mind is willing (their raging horrible werewolf brain currently in control of their body does not need to be willing), using your own tamed and subordinated curse to consume the one that burdens them.

Finally, the natural weapons granted by your Hybrid and Beast Forms carry the curse of Lycanthropy. Creatures that take damage from them must make a DC 15 Fortitude save or become an afflicted Lycanthrope of the same kind as your Inner Beast. Because the Lycanthrope template is incompatible with Tiny animals, if your Inner Beast is Tiny, they instead become Lycanthropes of a Dire version of your Inner Beast.

Advanced
Embracing the Wild Curse: The Fortitude save DC to resist your Lycanthropy is calculated as an ability granted by one of your class's Mythos, rather than being static.

Shunning the Wild Curse: By training with an afflicted Lycanthrope for a total of (12 - their Wisdom modifier) hours, you may grant them the Skill Focus (Control Shape) feat as a free bonus feat. You may train a total of (1/2 class level + your Wisdom modifier) afflicted Lycanthropes at one time.

In addition, by offering encouragement, afflicted Lycanthropes that can hear you gain a +2 circumstance bonus on Control Shape checks. This does not require an action.

Fantastic Mythos

Symbiotic Man-Beast Unification
Prerequisite: The 'Monstrous Beast-Skin Exhibition' Mythos

For your Hybrid Form, choose a third ability score to gain a +2 bonus. The first two ability scores you chose for Monstrous Beast-Skin Exhibition increase from +2 to +4.

Basic
Fury of Nature's Predator: You may only learn this manifestation if at least one of the two ability scores you chose for Monstrous Beast-Skin Exhibition were Strength or Constitution. When you Charge, you may make a Full-Attack in lieu of the normal attack made at the end of a Charge.

Guile of Nature's Shadow: You may only learn this manifestation if at least one of the two ability scores you chose for Monstrous Beast-Skin Exhibition were Dexterity or Intelligence. In Shadowy Illumination or darker, you may Hide even while being directly observed.

Wisdom of Nature's Consort: You may only learn this manifestation if at least one of the two ability scores you chose for Monstrous Beast-Skin Exhibition were Wisdom or Charisma. As a full-round action, while in a wilderness area, unaltered for civilized habitation, you may attempt to commune with nature. You ponder the answer to a single question, and a portion of the natural world will attempt to supply an answer to the best of its abilities; it cannot answer questions about the future, questions regarding other planes, or questions about the past before the plane you are on existed. It can only answer questions regarding facts, and not opinions or qualitative statements (for example, if you ask "Is my mother still alive?" it can answer yes or no, but if you ask "Is my mother doing well?" it cannot summarize her circumstances to a mortal definition of 'well' or 'unwell'). It will seldom give an answer longer than 25 words or so. In addition, questions that require information that can only be found in civilized areas have a (50 - class level - higher of Wisdom or Charisma modifier)% chance of failure. This is a Supernatural Divination effect that can only be used once per day; it is always recharged at the moment the moon reaches its zenith in the night sky.

Wild Monarch Authority
Prerequisite: The 'Flesh of the Wild Places' Mythos

When you assume your Beast Form, one piece of incompatible equipment per equipment slot (hands, feet, head, etc) melds into your new form, rather than falling to the ground. You retain any magical effects of this equipment as if you were wearing it, and gain no benefit from the magical effects of analogous equipment that you equip later in your Beast Form (for example, if a suit of +1 Plate Armor is absorbed into your Wolf form, you would gain its +1 enhancement bonus to armor, but you would not gain its base armor value - if you then wore a suit of +2 Plate Barding made to fit a wolf, you would not gain the +2 enhancement bonus to armor granted by it, but you would gain its base armor value).

Once per day, as a standard action, you may assert your authority over animals while in Beast Form, calling for aid with a loud cry. If you are in an area where it is reasonable for wild members of your Inner Beast's species to live, they will always be the ones to come to aid you. If that is not the case, some other random nearby animals will heed the call. If there are no animals of the 'Animal' Type nearby, but there are appropriately templated animals for the environment (such as Fiendish animals in Hell), they will answer the call instead.

The called animals appear at the beginning of the next round. If you are in battle, they roll initiative and join in. They are fiercely loyal and willing to risk their lives for you, following your commands if you give them. They fight until there is no more threat of imminent danger, then leave.

If called for non-combat purposes, the animals will perform one task you ask of them, as a whole, so long as it takes no longer than a day, such as 'scout that area', 'guard us while we sleep', 'attack anyone you find wandering the forest wearing a soldier's uniform', 'lead us to the nearest fresh water', and so on. Being animals, a long list of specific orders, clauses, and provisos will probably go over their heads, but they will attempt to fulfill your request to the best of their abilities.

This ability may call one CR 4 creature, 1d2+1 CR 3 creatures, 1d3+2 CR 2 creatures, or 1d4+3 CR 1 creatures. Creatures with an individual CR <1 should probably be represented by a Swarm.

At level 9, this ability may call one CR 6 creature, 1d2+1 CR 5 creatures, 1d3+2 CR 4 creatures, 1d4+3 CR 3 creatures, 1d6+4 CR 2 creatures, or 1d8+5 CR 1 creatures.

At level 11, this ability may call one CR 8 creature, 1d2+1 CR 7 creatures, 1d3+2 CR 6 creatures, 1d4+3 CR 5 creatures, 1d6+4 CR 4 creatures, 1d8+5 CR 3 creatures, 1d10+6 CR 2 creatures, or 1d12+7 CR 1 creatures.

At level 13, you may use this ability twice per day, or use both daily uses at once as a single action to call a double-sized horde of creatures.

At level 15, you may use this ability three times per day, or use two or three of your daily uses at once as a single action to call a double or triple sized horde of creatures.

Legendary Mythos

Perfected Lifeform Hybridization
Prerequisite: The 'Symbiotic Man-Beast Unification' Mythos

For your Hybrid Form, choose a fourth ability score to be granted a bonus; it receives a +2. The original two ability scores you chose for 'Monstrous Beast-Skin Exhibition' have their bonuses increases to +6. The ability you chose for Symbiotic Man-Beast Unification has its bonus increased to +4.

Basic
Embodied Predator Perfection: You may only learn this manifestation if you already possess the 'Fury of Nature's Predator' manifestation. The natural weapons granted by your Hybrid Form deal damage as if they were two size categories larger (this stacks with the size category bonus from Shape of the Fearsome Beast) and bypass damage reduction as if they were magical, as well as damage reduction that may be bypassed by a particular material (such as silver or cold iron). The base critical threat range for natural weapons granted by your Hybrid Form becomes 18-20. Your base speed while in Hybrid Form increases by 20ft.

If your Hybrid Form grants you a Bite attack, you may make iterative attacks with it, as if it were a manufactured weapon, and each iterative attack only suffers a cumulative -2 penalty to attack rolls, rather than the normal -5. When used in this way, it may not be used as a secondary natural weapon.

If your Hybrid Form grants you two Claw attacks, you gain the Multiattack feat as a bonus feat. You may make two attacks with each claw per round, as if you had four claws.

Embodied Shadow Perfection: You may only learn this manifestation if you already possess the 'Guile of Nature's Shadow' manifestation. You gain Darkstalker (LoM) as a bonus feat. Your voluntary movement is so light and subtle that you leave no tracks whatsoever, nor do you activate touch or pressure based traps against your will. Further, your presence or touch does not trigger pre-set magical effects, such as an Alarm or Symbol of Death spell (in the latter case, looking at the Symbol would still activate it, but touching it, passing over it, or passing through a portal warded by it would not trigger it).

Finally, you cannot be scryed upon, nor your location or identity divulged, by spells or magical effects with a caster level equal to or less than (your character level +2).

Embodied Consort Perfection: You may only learn this manifestation if you already possess the 'Wisdom of Nature's Consort' manifestation. While in a wilderness area, unaltered for civilized habitation, when you spend an action to voluntarily move, or move as part of another voluntary action, you may choose to not physically be present for any or all portions of that movement, so long as you end your movement in a likewise natural wilderness setting. This does not allow you to Fly or Burrow if you could not already.

For example, if you have a Speed of 30ft, and wish to Charge a creature 60ft away, but there is a Wall of Force, two ranks of spear-wielding soldiers, and a few yards of difficult terrain between you and your target, you may simply choose to not be present for your movement, disappearing and reappearing adjacent to your target and ripping them apart.

When you use this ability to disappear, you may only disappear along with up to a Light Load of additional weight; any excess is merely dropped as you vanish.

This ability is a Supernatural effect, but not a [Teleportation] effect.

Well. This is unexpected.

Unexpectedly AMAZING! Xefas, you forever have my gratitude! You even used nearly the same name that I was going to use, using the term "Feral Heart" in it. Neat.

Overall, I love it. It's flavorful, self-contained, and easy-to-understand. Perfect, in my books/

If the Lycanthrope template is removed, does that get rid of the racial hitdice and the LA too?

I suppose I could take it upon myself to make some alterations for avian were-creatures.

If the Lycanthrope template is removed, does that get rid of the racial hitdice and the LA too?

Yes, you lose your lycanthropy and everything related to it (other than qualifying for this feat). You consume that affliction and make it your own, evolving gradually into something much stronger.

(Not that it's hard to be stronger than the base Werewolf - what is it, like ~5-6 ECL for +4 to two stats and some damage reduction?)

I suppose I could take it upon myself to make some alterations for avian were-creatures.

Werecrow Olethrofex is only slightly less swag than Werejackal Olethrofex.

Werecrow Olethrofex is only slightly less swag than Werejackal Olethrofex.
Well of course. I'd rather play a Werevulture Olethrofex.

Which... brings to mind the size differences between various avian creatures. Hm.

That capstone Mythos is so amazingly sexy that I don't even know how to process it. It's just....amazing.

I tried to give a strict reading but I haven't found anything to criticize. Hmmm I will try again but so far nothing seems confusing or nonsensical (at the very least).

My biggest concern would be defining:

"While in a wilderness area, unaltered for civilized habitation,"

How much would count as alteration? And how much area does that affect? If a logger starts cutting down trees, is a whole forest not available for this ability?

Also isn't it a little ironic if this Mythos (based partially on Mutation, or change) couldn't function when things...change?

Maybe have a weaker effect if there has been slight alteration (but not total alteration into an urban environment/fake natural parks in the middle of cities). So to represent...adapativeness?

I have just found and read this and I like it but the hybrid form just does not quite 'feel' quite right to me, it works with certain animals, and the ones more likely to be used, but in other cases it would lack some important part of the animal, do you think it would be unbalanced to include some aspect of the animal shape that the hybrid form would go with (if necessary have the player chose the suitable most one they would use when gaining the mythos) for example:

rodent: gains the forms climbs speed

scavenger:gains the forms skill bonuses

predator and graceful: gains the forms 50ft land speed

hulking: grow to large size

the idea just helps tie the hybrid form with the animal from as being the same sort of animal through the sharing of the distinctive ability of each type e.g. someones whose animal is a cheetah would be faster (and thus predator).

also in a burst of late night inspiration (and to make sure this reply is not just me complaining) I have also written some base shapes for more unusual animals (mainly invertebrates):

Amphibian shape (e.g. frogs or newts)
Your size changes to Tiny.
Your base speed becomes 15ft, and you gain a swim speed equal to your land speed.
You have a natural bite attack which deals a base 1d3 damage.
You lose any racial natural armor bonuses.

Avian shape (e.g. birds and could cover bats)
Your size changes to tiny or small (choose once and it does not change between transformations).
Your base speed becomes 15ft, and you gain a fly speed (average manoeuvrability) equal to your land speed +25ft if tiny, or your land speed +15 if small.
You have a natural bite attack which deals a base 1d3 damage if tiny or 1d4 if small.
You lose any racial natural armor bonuses.

Aquatic shape (fish, I was mainly thinking sharks when writing this)
Your size changes to Medium.
Your base speed becomes 0ft and you gain a 60ft swim speed.
You gain a +2 bonus to your Constitution.
You have a single natural bite attack that deals 1d6 damage.
+2 natural armor bonus.
You gain the ability to breathe underwater but lose the ability to breathe air.

Arachnid shape (spiders and scorpions)
Your size changes to Tiny.
Your base speed becomes 15ft, and you gain a Climb speed equal to your land speed.
You have either a natural bite attack which deals a base 1d3 damage, a natural sting attack which deals a base 1d3 damage, or two secondary natural claw attacks that deal 1d2 damage.
Should you choose the sting attack you may gain one that deals 1d6 damage should you gain a hybrid form, replacing the other natural attack options.
You lose any racial natural armor bonuses.

Eusocial shape (ants, wasps, hornets, termites and bees)
Your size changes to Tiny.
Your base speed becomes 15ft, and you gain either a Climb speed equal to your land speed or a 10ft fly speed (poor).
You have either a natural bite or a natural sting attack which in either case deals a base 1d3 damage.
Should you choose the sting attack you may gain one that deals 1d6 damage should you gain a hybrid form, replacing the other natural attack options.
You lose any racial natural armor bonuses.

Crustacean shape (crabs and lobsters)
Your size changes to Tiny.
Your base speed becomes 15ft, and you gain a swim speed equal to your land speed.
You may choose to gain the ability to breathe underwater at the cost of losing the ability to breathe air
You have a pair of secondary natural claw attacks which deal a base 1d2 damage.
You lose any racial natural armor bonuses.

Cephalopod shape (ocpopus, cuttlefish and squid)
Your size changes to Small.
Your base speed becomes 10ft and you gain a 30ft swim speed.
You gain the ability to breathe underwater but lose the ability to breathe air.
You have two secondary natural tentacle attacks that deal 1d3 damage.

just ideas I had for more obscure/unlikely to be used animals.
