Can a monk wear a shield?

I mean, the Ac bonus specifically states "Unarmored and unencumbered" Now, the encumbered part is based off of encumberance. You must have a light load(If I remember correctly) Or lose the bonus.

As for armor. well, I mean, Shields aren't really considered armor. They are like extra to it. Heck ,there's a "Shield" slot in the AC. It isn't armor.

So... can a monk wear a shield and still gain all his abilities?

No, Monks are prohibited from using shields as well.

When wearing armor, using a shield, or carrying a medium or heavy load, a monk loses her AC bonus, as well as her fast movement and flurry of blows abilities.

In 3.0 it didn't specifically state shields, but they clarified it in 3.5.

What about using a dancing shield?
Do you mean animated? Isn't Dancing for weapons?

I'm pretty sure animated shields count as if you're wielding it in almost every way (I think it makes an exception for trying to shield bash?).

Yes, that is my understanding of that property, as well.

animated is cool, because they are not holding it

I find the mental image of a monk dancing around and accidently punching the animated shield because it can't keep up with him and gets in the way hideously amusing.
