A lot of people have complained that Exotic Weapons just aren't worth it. I know about the Weapon Proficiency group feats in unearthed arcana but this is an alternative I thought of myself. Combining weapon proficiency feats with Tactical feats. Since Tactical feats are a collection of situational bonuses that aren't worth a single feat and weapon proficiency isn't worth a single feat I felt like combining them.

Pike Breaker [Proficiency]
You have a history as a member of one of the elite units employed for the dangerous task of charging enemy pike formations.
Prerequisite: Str 13+, proficiency with any martial weapon
Benefit: You gain proficiency with Great-swords. In addition whenever you make a charge action against a character wielding a pole arm, as a free action you may make an attack at it using the normal rules for striking at held objects (see the rules for sundering and disarming). If you successfully hit the opponents weapon you deal no damage to it but your opponent can make no readied or immediate actions against you.
Special: If you have the Improved Sunder feat then you may attempt to sunder an opponent’s reach weapon when standing in a square your opponent threatens.

Militant farming tradition [Proficiency]
You come from a society where peasants are forced to adapt farming tools in order to defend themselves.

Prerequisite: Proficiency with any simple weapon, must not be in any class that implies a higher caste (Knight or Samurai for example)
Benefit: You gain proficiency with the Scythe, light and heavy flail, Nunchaku, Three-sectioned staff and Kama. With a DC 10 craft check and a full round action you may modify any improvised weapon so that anyone wielding it suffers only half the usual penalty.
Special: A monk may take this feat for free at first level. If he chooses to do so he counts as a monk of two levels lower for the purposes of unarmed damage. A character does not lose this feat if he no longer meets the prerequisites due to multi-classing.

Chain gladiator training [Proficiency]
You have been trained in a school of gladiatorial combat that emphasises binding opponent’s limbs instead of killing them.

Prerequisite: Dex 13+ proficiency with any martial weapon
Benefit: You gain proficiency with the spiked chain, manriki-gusari, chain and the kusari-gama. In addition you may attempt to grapple opponents within 10 ft. with a touch attack from a spiked chain. If you maintain a grapple on someone for two successive rounds then you may make an opposed strength check (prone characters receive a –4 penalty on this check, especially stable characters receive their normal bonus). If you win then you may pull your opponent 5 ft. towards you.

Dwarven Skullcleaver [Proficiency]
You are trained with the regional weapons of the dwarven race and have studied their legendary combat techniques.
Prerequisite: Must have spent 4 years living with dwarves, Str 13+, proficiency with any martial weapon
Benefit: You gain proficiency with the Dwarven War axe, Dwarven Urgosh and warhammer. In addition you gain a +2 competence bonus on attack rolls to confirm critical hits with any of these weapons.
Special: Dwarves receive this feat for free at first level as long as they meet the prerequisites.

Back-up Weapon training [Proficiency]
You understand the importance of keeping a back-up weapon.
Prerequisite: Proficiency with any simple weapon
Benefit: You gain proficiency with the dagger, mace and any of the following; cutlass, falchion, kukri, machete.
Special: If you have the quickdraw feat, if you are disarmed or your weapon is sundered you may draw a light weapon as an immediate action. If you are carrying a pole-arm and have the quickdraw feat you may drop your pole-arm and draw a light weapon as an immediate action.

Elven Fencing Style [Proficiency]
You have studied under the legendary elven fencing masters and are able to avoid clumsy blows.
Prerequisite: Must have lived amongst an elven community for 10 years, Dex 13+, proficiency with any martial weapon
Benefit: You gain proficiency with the Elven Thin-blade. You gain a +1 competance bonus to armour class against two-handed weapons.
Special: Half-elves receive this feat for free as long as they meet the prerequisites.

Horse-warrior background [Proficiency]
You come from a tribe with a fearsome reputation for being master horsemen
Prerequisite: Ride 1 rank, proficiency with any simple weapon, must have spent four years among nomadic horsemen
Benefit: You gain proficiency with the dagger, sabre and composite shortbow. Once per day you may re-roll any failed ride check.

Front-line Infantryman [Proficiency]
You have a history as a soldier in one of the many armies that fight across the land.
Prerequisite: Proficiency with any simple weapon
Benefit: You gain proficiency with the longspear, Ranseur, Glaive and Halberd. You gain a +1 competence bonus on attack rolls against mounted characters.
Special: You may take the Hold the Line feat even if you do not have the Combat Reflexes feat. You may choose to swap out all the proficiencies normally granted by this feat for proficiency with the Nagamaki and Zanbattou.

City Brawler [Proficiency]
You have been instructed in rudimentary defence skills necessary for city life.
Prerequisite: Must have at least 50 gp worth of gear
Benefit: You gain proficiency with the rapier and dagger as well as with bucklers and small shields.
Special: If you have the two-weapon fighting feat you receive a +1 bonus to armour class whenever you have either a shield or dagger in your off-hand.

Squire Training [Proficiency]
You have gone through the training required to become a knight.
Prerequisite: Handle Animal 1 rank, proficiency with any simple weapon
Benefit: You gain proficiency with the lance, longsword, bastard sword, morningstar and warhammer. If you are knocked off your horse you may stand up as a move action that does not provoke an attack of opportunity and draw a weapon in the same action. You may draw a weapon as a free action whenever you dismount.
Special: Depending on your background you may swap out the proficiencies gained from this feat for the Katana, Composite Longbow and Nagamaki.

Technical Weapon User [Proficiency]
You come from an advanced civilisation well known for its innovative devices.
Prerequisite: 1 rank if any craft skill
Benefit: You gain proficiency with the light and heavy repeating crossbow. You may re-roll the mischance due to concealment when using a ranged weapon once per combat.

Orcish Weapon Skill [Proficiency]
You have learned the use of the crude weapons favoured by orcs.
Prerequisite: Must have lived among Orcish society for four years, proficiency with any martial weapon
Benefit: You gain proficiency with javelins, hand-axes, battle-axes, greataxes and the Orc Double-axe. While armed you may ignore any charisma penalty to Intimidate checks.
Special: An orc or half-orc receives this feat for free at first level as long as he meets the prerequisites.

An interesting approach. I don't think combining low powered Feats with Weapon Poficiencies is really the answer, though.
