View Full Version : I just won the UK Lottery!

Mr. Moon

When I went to check my Email today, the only new message went along the lines of this:

Congratualtions! You have won the UK lottery! Please confirm and send us this unnesicary personal information to claim your prize!

Yeah, of course I won the lottery I never even entered. Of course it makes more sence to tell me I won the UK lotto rather than the Canadian lotto. And of course, the fact that it never mentions my name doesn't seem to matter either, does it?

Needless to say, it really made me laugh.

What about you? Have you ever gotten rediculessly obvious SPAM messages?

Lets see, according to the internet I've won 3 free laptops, an Xbox 360, a bundle of "hourly prizes", a PSP, and a trip to the US.

I've really gotten the Prince from Nigeria ones. *rolls eyes*

I also get a lot of those broken English, like then ran it through a Chinese translation back into English, emails that don't make any sense at all.

There used to be a cool website where you could play games and win prizes. Yeah, now-a-days it would be a scam. But the web was new and they were pretty open about the purpose. The games were scavanger hunts on participating companies' websites and the prizes were inexpensive promotional items. The games weren't terribly easy, you had to really dig through a website to find the target image. If you found it before anyone else did, all the info you had to give was a shipping address. Our lab won some bags of free gormet coffee from a company in California. A new game would start with directions to a different website as soon as someone won. Too bad that gamesite isn't still around.

You would be surprised how often I've been the 1,000,000th visitor on a website.

As e-mail goes, I have a fairly reliable spam filter. My spam : useful mail ratio is about 1:2 now. Used to be 20:1 or something.

My favorites are the e-mails in which an aging, accomplished doctor in Africa needs my money in order to complete his research into some obscure disease or affliction. Whoever's writing this stuff gets into it, giving this fake doctor titles, awards, a detailed history. Pretty funny stuff.

I thought I had read something about this somewhere (http://www.achewood.com/index.php?date=03052007).

My friend enjoys that one, since he has a popup blocker which prevents whatever is supposed to appear from appearing. So he just gets to shoot hundreds of ducks as much as he likes

Hi

My name is cortney. I found your email on that dating site.
I also love sex on the side. I have a loving partner but he is working 16 hours a day and we have sex only once a week :(
If you are interested and wanna see my pictures just email me at [email protected]
Don`t reply, use the email above (my boyfriend doesn`t know about that email!)

hello, I am pretty russian girl, bored tonight.
would you like to chat with me and see my pics?
if so then email me at [email protected]

I've received about ten of each from ten different people.

Also, you know about those ads for dating sites that show you a picture of some girl and a line of text underneath right?

Sometimes they manage to show the same girl twice but the text says that she lives in two different countries.

When was the last time I received spam...?
I think it was about 3 or 4 years ago, actually. But that may have just been a chain letter.
"My name is Tracey. I am 7. I am Dead.
If you don't send this to 20 other people today, then you will die by 9:00pm..."

You think that's scary? I don't even do anything about my e-mail accounts to stop the spam! I just have a simple, free hotmail account and that's it!

That's the same with me. I use gmail, and I have almost ever gotten a spam email. Gmail has changed my life. Now I no longer live in fear. You should get it too. Hopefully if I keep saying things like this then the dark ovelords of Google will deign to give me money, or just give me my soul back. Both are good.

I think my Yahoo account was filled with spam.

Then I learned not to click any of those "hobbies / interests" options.

Then I moved on to Gmail. My current ratio of spam to normal mail is like 1 / 350. And even the "spam" are from places I actually was expecting mail from.

Yeah, that reminds me of an odd one I got once.

It was a pop-up that was a perfect representation of the Yahoo-Mail login page in Internet Explorer. It looked like Yahoo has just logged you out and asked you to log back in. It even had my username (culled from the email-address, no doubt)

Of course, since I was using Firefox in Ubuntu, I kind of noticed the discrepancy...

I have had the Nigerian prince one too; that one was just so obviously fake, especially since I got three from different addresses in the same inbox...

I got an E-mail once from a movie website that seemed perfectly legitimate, and looked like one of my friends had sent it. So I went to sign up, and they asked me for my AOL password. *Flashing warning lights* Even though AOL, and almost all E-mail services, say that they will never ask for your password.

I get around 50 spam a week from Gmail. They send it dirRECTly to the spam box, of course. And the spam filter rocks.

My worst spam was probably the nonsensical story extract.

I have frequent spam, but then again I use Outlook and the same account since I started on teh Interwebs half-a-dozen years or so ago. I now just have a list of addresses that can filter through (or whose title has a specific word in it); everything else goes in the Spam folder. I still have to check through occasionally to clear it out to make sure I'm not taking out anything important (but of course then I just skim for the name of the thing I'm looking for). The rest I just ignore. It's clunky, but it works.

The spam that makes me laugh the most is the ones which quite clearly are spam, since they don't even get my email address in the contents of the email right apart from the first letter...

On the computer on Bleak Despair, whe have a system whereby any spam communications immeidatly send a power discharge back through the system and cause the original sender to explode. I'm thinking of setting one up down here too...

Well, my primary email address was listed on the internet for many years.

Because I made a website at my school somewhere around 95? or so, whenever that Netscape thing came out and trumped mosaic. That website was soooo cool, it even blinked. However, it did also contain my email address. By the time they invented spiders I was too lazy to remove it.

And then I started using it as a way to try to promote myself into getting some sort of job with a unspecified arty degree. Which again I was too lazy to take down. (http://www-personal.umich.edu/~wolfsong)

Though about a year ago, I believe I did take my email address off the site... or at least remove it from the <email> tags.

Which is why, I get spam.... and more spam, and spam, spam, bacon, spam and spam.

Good thing spam filters have evolved.

Also, you know about those ads for dating sites that show you a picture of some girl and a line of text underneath right?
What I love about those ads are the ones that use whatever network information they're able to glean out of your ip or whatever other network information they can get and then customize it to say, "Meet Hot Girls in the <insert your city name here>!" The great part is they always get my city wrong, consistently naming a small town on the other side of the city next door.

Of course, one of my favorite ads came from a few years ago. It was a pop up. A new window opened on my browser, completely unsolicited. In this new, unwanted pop up window, there was, of course, an advertisement. "What was the product being advertised in this utterly annoying pop up window?" you ask?

Why, software to block annoying pop up ads while on the internet!

...

...

Can you say, "Lacks credibility?" Sure, I knew you could.

Everytime I openned Internet explorer, it would pop up a new window saying I was infected with Spyware, and I should purchase their product to remove it. Funny thing was that the company selling the removal tool, was the one that INFECTED MY COMPUTER IN THE FIRST PLACE! Why would I pay them a cent?!?

I got a free program from the net and removed it myself. Aint "Modern Internet Advertising Methods" grand?

I just got this little gem

Dearest Friend,

I'm happy to inform you about my success in getting those funds transferred under the cooperation of a new partner from paraguay. Presently I'm in Paraguay for investment projects with my own share. Meanwhile,I didn't forget your past efforts and attempts to assist me in transferring those funds despite that it failed us some how.

Now contact my secretary, his name is Mr. Frank EMAIL : ([email protected]) you can reach him with this phone number 229-9391-3542 Ask him to send you the total $850.000 which I kept for your compensation for all the past efforts and attempts to assist me in this matter. I appreciated your collective efforts at that time so feel free and get in touch with my secretary Frank and instruct him where to send your check Draft to.

Please do let me know immediately you receive it so that we can share the joy after all the sufferness at that time.In the moment, I'm very busy here because of the investment projects which me and the new partner are having at hand, finally, remember that i had forwarded instruction to the secretary on your behalf to receive that money,so feel free to get intouch with Frank without any delay.

Best Regards,
Mr Yusufu Haji

I feel pity for anyone stupid enough to actually believe this

Gmail was excellent for about a year, but recently a Chinese chemist has tracked me down and is spying on me.
Now I get loads of scary emails from someone who thinks I have really small genitals and a terrible sex life.
How did he know?!

I send the spam e-mails back with a picture of chuck norris about to sidekick. Surprisingly that stops a lot of them.

Seriously though, I just send a picture of me naked.....what? It cut down the number of spam. Now I just get a ton from some FBI.com place

Gmail - I love it. I get about 1 spam a day in it, but the "delete forever" really does that. Far better then yahoo, which has lie 40ish a day there, or hotmail which has 20ish a day there.

Yep, I just plain get a lot of spam. I've been informed that I have about infinity+ of target gift cards, ipods, xboxes, cash waiting in an african bank account, best buy gift cards, and new cars for me to claim. I'm holding out for a free house. It's coming, I can sense it.

Honestly, if they want me to have it, then they should send it via paypal. You can do that with any e-mail y'know.

Spam - too large a problem on too cheap a medium for it to be stopped completely. Build a better mouse trap, build a better mouse.

When I went to check my Email today, the only new message went along the lines of this:

Yeah, of course I won the lottery I never even entered. Of course it makes more sence to tell me I won the UK lotto rather than the Canadian lotto. And of course, the fact that it never mentions my name doesn't seem to matter either, does it?

Needless to say, it really made me laugh.

What about you? Have you ever gotten rediculessly obvious SPAM messages?

Yep, I've been saving this one...it's very similar to the Norwegian Banker emails of internet legend:

I've gotten all the obvious spams, the "Carry on this chain, and every email you send it to 25 cents will go towards whatever disease we're fighting today", the personal info, the Lottery, etc. The ones that scare me the most are the ones where you receive an email from a store (in my case it was Circuit City), saying that someone used my credit card to buy some items and they need to verify that it was me that made the purchases. Now, of course I had not made these purchases, but in the email here are these two things listed, complete with serial number and everything. Fortunately, I called Circuit City, rather than go to the website given, and was told that this was a scam that a LOT of people were falling for. I forwarded my email to our local news channel who has a guy that specializes in these things, and what do ya know? My email and someone else's made the 6 o clock news that night as a warning. A couple years later I received another one, different store this time, but still just as legitate looking as the first one, but since I recognized it that time, I just deleted it. The scary thing about them are that they have the store's logo and banner and everything. It looks very very real.

Oh, I also get a lot of spams offering me college degrees and seats for Oprah and other obviously fake things like designer purses. I don't even get to carry my NON designer purse around anymore! I'm always carrying a diaper bag. *laffs*

I've actualy figured out how to bump up Yahoo's spam protection. Now pretty much everything gets filled away in my spam holder, which empties itself every two weeks. ^_^

Sometimes I check it out just to see if theirs anything funny. Like that famous "very rich person needs you to send him lots of money, and he will give you lots of money in return". Or the "we trust you will become a valued buisness partner" one. Of course, that makes so much sense. I'm a Canadian teenager with no training in the buisness world, let alone a credit history. Or a good one, at lest. :P

I personally use Gmail. I get a helluva lot of Spam. Too bad for them, it all goes back into the spam section. Mail:Spam? 187:5792. Too bad I have never read a bit of that spam.

Hell, before i hit 1000, i tried to sign up for spam to get to 1k. Now i wanna hit 10. Gmail, you have made me an 'after'!:smallamused:

Lingire stores. Getting out of "D3bt". True love in seven days. Business in a box. DO I WANNA BE ON THE OPRAH SHOW?? Ooh, a NEW sexually explicit dating website! Yo, free tones! Something from "atari".. It finally finds Newgrounds to be spam!

You would be surprised how often I've been the 1,000,000th visitor on a website.

As e-mail goes, I have a fairly reliable spam filter. My spam : useful mail ratio is about 1:2 now. Used to be 20:1 or something.

I've been the one millionth visitor to the same site on two different days. I was really surprised.

A friend of mine once joked that, even though he gets dozens of e-mails telling him how he can increase the size of his (you know), he still has all these hot, young (and occasionally underage) girls e-mailing him to say how much they want to have sex with him.

The best spam I ever got was from before the days of consumer profiling and suchlike. It was trying to sell me industrial diamond-cutting equipment.

If I ever suddenly find myself with a need to cut diamonds, I'm going to be kicking myself so much for not taking them up on their generous offer.

I never get spam on the work e-mail. there's a whole team of helpful people downstairs who man the firewall equivalent of the GREAT WALL OF CHINA. Nothing that's spam gets past the firewall. Mind you it also stops mates from sending you a picture of the fish they caught on the weekend, but you can't have everything...

I'm actually thinking it's time to update my home e-mail address. I get way too much spam.
