While I'm sure this has been done before, I'm curious.

What is everyone's favorite party role?

Mine is the Jack-of-All-Trades

I'm with you BD. Jack of all trades is a lot of fun.

Skill monkey, I love to shine in the non-combat situations (although shining in combat is fun too).

I like making things explode. I'm deffinetly an arcanist.

BATMAN!

follow that by a face that in combat either enhances allies or a degree of battlefield control. That's things like Knights, Marshals, Outcast Champion, etc.

I am really in my niche when I am playing an arcane caster. I like wizards, but pretty much any class goes. I do like the skillmonkey role though, which might explain my current love of Beguilers.

I can play a brawler if needed, but a straight "run up and hit things" character doesn't really interest me. I have played some ranger and archer characters before and had lots of fun.

Without a doubt, my least favorite role is the healer/divine caster. I have absolutely no desire to play a divine character of any type. I don't know why, but they just don't interest me.

I like arcane casters, but I put brawler because I've played those most and I like them too. Hexblades and barbarians particularly.

I prefer the Jack of all trades for the most part, but there lies a certain satisfaction in smashing things to bits with a blunt weapon.

Woot! Bards FTW!

Yeah, I like being a Jack-Of-All trades, but my favorite part of that is being able to use spells to enhance my Bluff so I don't even have to fight until things are on my terms. Bluff is probably my favorite skill, then Diplomacy.

Skillmonkeys and Secondary Fighters (Ranger, Duskblade, Hexblade, etc). I dislike focusing on any one ability, and those give me some variety.

Cleric. healboty goodness and divine power. Yum Yum. Everyone likes to stay on my good side to make sure I heal them the next time they get bitten in half by a hydra.

I like playing wizards. But not optimized Batman wizards. I find that the game is no fun if you waste everything you come across without breaking a sweat.

I'd say "superiority fighter." Which I guess is "brawler," but not quite.

I can't envision any of my personae in plate mail or carrying a heavy shield (bucklers are fine post-gatka.) I'm the one who wins because I have p. 166 of the PHB bookmarked and the DM doesn't.

You like breaking stuff Edo?
I checked brawler, because whatever character I play I try to have a t least some combat capacity, and I dont like playing arcanists, divine I've not tried very much, and skillmonkeys are fun, but only if you can actually do something in combat.

I'm torn between "skillmonkey/recon" and "Jack-of-All-Trades." I love both roles, and in a certain sense, I kind of see them as the same thing. They both mean that the character has something to contribute to almost every imaginable situation. They're both great at doing things other than/outside of combat. Ultimately I think I end up on the "skillmonkey/recon" end of things a bit more often, but I do love my Bards. One of my favorite D&D memories concerns the time when the party's other Bard (a Bard-Barian, actually) and I avoided a confrontation with some Emerald Claw soldiers by convincing them that we weren't a bunch of adventurers looking for the same magic widget that their superiors were after, but instead we were a group of big-game hunters in search of the dreaded Kogo Beast (followed by a long and detailed description about the nature and habits of this beast, all conjured up extempore by the other player and myself). It was beautiful. Go Team Bard!

Brawler, but that's a little misleading. Most of my brawlers are Druids.

Wizard is beginning to grow on me, though.

Whoever can cause the most surprise and confusion in the enemy ranks (and maybe also my party :smallwink: ). This usually means I gravitate towards casters with illusion and battlefield control spells.

Lately I've been playing a lot of divine characters because I like the RP aspect of playing out an alternate value system, and seeing how this changes the choices I make for my character, compared to a character that would follow my personal faith. It's an entertaining thought experiment.

I love playing skill monkeys... so I play Beguilers and Druids a lot. I know, sounds weird, but I got tired of Rogues not actually being able to do their own shtick (like bypassing Arcane Locked doors), but a Beguiler or Druid can usually get through those same situations.

I like to actually have an ability that doesn't involve:
a)Crushing someones skull all day long.
b)Vapourising flesh with the power of my mind a couple of times a day.
c)Using divine power to defeat my enemies a couple of times a day.

That leaves Skill-Monky and JoaT.

Considering the fact that I also like to have a Profession (hey, I was something before I was an adventurer you know...not everyone trains their entire life for this job), I need the extra skill points to burn.

Skill-Monkey it is.

I prefer Brawler and Divine because I can combine the two so easily.
My current characters are a dwarven barbarian/berserk/frenzied berserker in one campaign and a fighting cleric in another.

Definitely Brawler. I recognize the importance of skillmonkeys and casters, but I seem to be doomed to games that never get to the level where casters get fun, and I'm just more heavily drawn to rolling d20's in order to make things bleed than rolling d20's to untrap things, though I love having plenty of Listen and Spot. I would really like to have the chance to have a great time with casters, but I'm a realist when it comes to any games I get involved in. Better to have fun now than to maybe have fun at a later time, should the game ever progress that far.

Skill Monkey, I can't live without my 14+ skill points a level.
Brawling is fun too…but most of my skill monkies pick up a little bit of combat capabilities over the course of their careers.

I s'pose i'm pretty vanilla when it comes to party roles. I'm pretty much always the party tank (gotta love Psychic Warriors), never played Wizards, Clerics or Druids because the flavour just doesn't appeal to me.

Aside from that, I've always had a soft-spot for Rangers.

In terms of your choices, I'm a skill monkey/secondary combatant/scout.

I mostly think of my 'party role' more in terms of leader, muscle, party face, and specialist, though (in which case, I pick leader).

I like jack-of-all-trades as there's many ways to do it, and you get to participate a little in everything.

I also like carrying extradimensional space crammed full of mostly useless trinkets that ocassionally save the party's ass.

Arcanist/psionic for me.

I prefer either "buff" magic (targetting myself and/or others - transmutation/psychometabolism) or I like "dark" casters who specialize in stealth and save-or-die/suck (illusion and necromancy/psychometabolism and telepathy). Usually, I chose one or the other archetype to specialize in rather than trying to be a true "Batman."

For instance, my current character is a gestalt druid/wizard who mostly buffs the melee characters or lays down some battlefield control (e.g., grease, drifts of the shalm). My alternate (in case my current dies) is a homebrew Cha-based caster somewhat like the shadowcaster (essentially, a warmage/dread necromancer/beguiler-style class that specializes in illusion with some necromancy and transmutation).

I like to be the versatile one in the campaign, mainly because of my short attention span. I get bored when my main options are: 1) hit the enemy with my weapon, kill the enemy, find another enemy; or, 2) I look for traps, I disarm traps, rinse, repeat. Those roles are fun for me occasionally, but I like the casting roles (wizards, clerics, druids) because they're so variable and can do so many different things.

i didn't know iron man could heal people.

of course the only iron man i remember had such a small battery reserve in his powersuit he usually ended up almost leaving himself immobilized or killing himself just by jump starting the X-jet or batmobile. or ya know, going for a half hour walk.

Jack-of-all-Trades. Because even if I'm not very good at doing it, I've probably put enough ranks in Bluff to convince you that I am, so even if I fail, you'll still love me.

I'm surprised that healer is the least fav. role, since everyone loves the demigod of a cleric. Then again most people put bralwer and said they play clerics as such.

On the occasions that I get a chance to actually just play instead of being DM, I tend to gravitate towards being a scout/rogue/ninja/spy, deftly infiltrating the enemy's territory, learning their secrets, & extricating myself using stealth & my wits. For some reason, sneaking has always been more appealing (& more cathartic) that playing the meat-shield.

I'm afraid I have always been drawn to the ability to turn people to dust by pointing at them. It's not that I never play anything else, but when I do play my group usually has me as the caster 'cuz they don't want to bother with the spells, and I do! :D

As of 8:15 PM this is a shining example of why Divine Casters tend to be so powered-up by WotC...

Brawler: ~20%
Skill Monkey: ~20.5%
Arcane: ~26.5%
Jack of All Trades: ~23%

Divine: ~10%

Typical. Despite DMM, Wild Shapes, Miracles and the slew of other things that people complain about incessantly when it comes to Divine Casters, they're STILL the least desirable to play.

Maybe they need a bit more love to get people willing to play them???
