Hey all,
this is a modulation I've been working on for D&D.. its a new way to use magic in the campaign.. so far I've only got the base classes worked out.. and even then its not perfect.. just looking for some input.. here it is:

Altered Magic Mod:

This is a Mod I’ve created that alters the way magic is used, created, and carried in the realm of D&D.

For one thing, I’ve condensed all 5 full casters (bard, cleric, druid, sorcerer, and wizard) into one class. This was difficult and probably hasn’t worked out completely evenly (it’ll take some tweaking for sure).

The other two classes (paladin and ranger) with any spell casting abilities will go on normally, except that they will use the Mods presented in the Complete Warrior book.

All other classes are to remain the exact same.

The major difference between this mod and normal D&D is that anyone can use magic. The limiting factor is that only a few possess the ability to alter magic in the world into a usable form.

The magic in this new world is all contained in a certain, fairly common, type of stone. Those who can mould the magic of the stones are called Stone Mages. And even they have limited ability to alter the nature of these stones; after 24 hours, all but the rarest of stones revert back to their original, unformed magic.

There exists also in this world some few stones whose magic is already in a form that is usable to the peoples of the world. These few stones may be altered, but they have a 50% chance of losing their original form.

When the magic in a magic stone is expended, it takes the stone the rest of the day to regenerate its magic potential, until then it is merely a mundane rock.

In creating this mod, I’m trying to create a world in which magic is uncommon and those who are able to harness it to their whims are few and far between. A campaign in this setting would be able to have fun both with and without a Stone Mage.

Weapon and Armour Proficiencies
Stone Mages are proficient with all simple weapons as well as light and medium armour. A Stone Mage is trained defensively more Than they are offensively.
Stone Finding
A Stone Mage can use the search skill to find a stone with magic properties (that can be infused with a spell). No role is necessary to find a stone able to store magic of a level that is lesser than or equal to the Stone Finding modifier. DC to find a stone of higher capacity is Stone level + Stone Mage level + 15.
Stone Creation
A stone Mage can create a magical stone my infusing it with a spell of a level determined by his class level. To do this he must concentrate (DC 15 + Spell level) for 1 hour. Any number of stones may be magnified in this hour, the concentration DC for multiple stones is determined for the highest level of stone being created.
At 1st level a Stone Mage must choose a specialization to determine which spells may be used:
Musician – The Mage carries an instrument (usually string) in which there are several slots to place stone. When stones are placed in this slot, the Stone Mage may play his instrument and mask the stone activation in song. A Stone Mage with this specialization also has the following skills: Diplomacy (Cha), Gather Information (Cha), Perform *Instrument and Song* (Cha), and Speak Language. The spells used are those of the Bard in the PHB.
Healer – The Mage carries a holy item which, when used in combination with a stone, will alter the magic released into a healing spell of the same level. A Healer Stone Mage also has the following skills: Diplomacy (Cha), Heal (Wis), Knowledge (History) (Int), and Knowledge (Religion) (Int),. The spells used are those of a Cleric in the PHB.
Druid – The Mage trains an animal companion (Find out how in the Druid section of the PHB), but at the cost of his own skills; his attack bonus is reduced to that of a Sorcerer (See PHB) and he is proficient with light armour only. A Stone Mage studying the way of the druid can use these skills: Handle Animal (Cha), Knowledge (Nature) (Int), Listen (Wis), Ride (Dex). The spells used are those of a Druid in the PHB.
Adept – The Mage has a natural magic that wells inside of him. An Adept has learned to use the stones he finds as channels for this magic, rather than stores. As long as the Adept has some spell slots left, and a stone of adequate level, he can spontaneously channel the magic through the stone to create the desired outcome. Unfortunately, when this is done, the stone loses its magical potential for 2

Why would they be called Stone Mages if there are no other types of Spell Casters?

I agree. That seems to be too focused to be the only caster choice.
