Standing just a wee bit shorter than a pixie at 1 foot 9 inches to 2 and 3 inches, a face-stealer sprite is thinner and more gauntly thin and its wings are great colorful butterfly or moth-like wings. They dress in drab oranges, reds, and browns, with the cherubic faces of children. When threatened a face-stealer sprite’s “mask” will split revealing their real face. This face still bears some of this cherubic quality if viewed from the nose up, its ears bearing and elfin point. Its mouth, however is inhuman, spider like chelicerae extending from above a hole filled with rows and rows of backwards pointing fangs, and a rasping tongue. The face-stealer sprite is an unseelie fey most commonly seen in autumn, which congregates near river banks in hollows and under overhangs, in beaver dams, and rarely underwater however although fully amphibious the sprites typically prefer to sleep above water.

Face-stealer sprites are malicious fey which enjoy tricking mortals at the best of times, but their name is drawn from their particular favorite past time. Face-stealer sprites enjoy stealing the faces of human(oid)s, especially young children. A face-stealer sprite will lure a child in with illusions and candy. They then use their sleep powder to knock the child out and remove its face. If a child wears a mask a face-stealer sprite will often content itself with the mask and leave the child unharmed; it is unclear why they do so since they seem intelligent enough to tell the difference, but as they turn stolen faces into masks perhaps that is sufficient.

A face-stealer sprite speaks Common, Sylvan, and often another language or two.

Combat:

A face-stealer sprite never initiates physical combat, however, and even if combat is joined will not attempt physical force on someone who has not personally attacked it in some way, they will however use their sleep dust on unsuspecting foes and other non-lethal attack forms. At heart, however, a face-stealer sprite is a coward and if pressed will flee and if trapped will usually bargain.

Iron Truth (Ex): The touch of cold iron against its flesh forces a face-stealer sprite to speak no word that is a lie. They may still lie through omission or through use of ambiguous phrases, but every word a face-stealer sprite speaks while touched by cold iron must be technically true, and an oath sworn while touched by cold iron must be adhered to the letter though not the spirit. A DC 23 Knowledge (nature) check reveals this information about face-stealer sprites.

Natural Dart (Ex): A face-stealer can exude a fluid which hardens into a dart they can spit forth at a foe. This is a natural weapon which functions as a ranged attack with a range increment of 20 ft (and maximum range of 5 range increments) which deals 1d3 damage and inflicts the face-stealer sprite’s poison.

Poison (Ex): A face-stealer sprite’s bite and natural dart both inflict its poison. This poison has an initial and secondary damage of 1d4 Dexterity damage and a Fort save DC of 13 (Constitution based, includes a +2 racial bonus).

Sleep Dust (Su): A face-stealer sprite’s wings produce a sleep inducing powder. A face-stealer sprite may release this powder on a target within 5 ft of them 5 times per day. The target must make a Fortitude save (DC 13, charisma-based) or fall asleep for 1 hour as if with a Sleep spell with no HD limit.

Spell-like abilities: A face-stealer sprite may use the following spells as spell-like abilities each 3/day: Cause Fear (DC 14), Dancing Lights, Entangle (DC 14), Invisibility, Major Image (DC 16). They may also use Web (DC 15) once per day. Caster level 5th. The save DCs are Charisma based.

Steal Face (Su): A face-stealer sprite may steal a creature’s face. This can only be done to a helpless creature and requires 10 minutes of work causing them no pain and not disrupting their sleep. When a creature has its face stolen it is left with a strange blank visage which inspires disgust and loathing on sight, its eyes mere slits and its mouth lipless and alien. Any creature which has had its face stolen suffers a -4 penalty to Charisma based checks made to interact with any creature which has seen them in their faceless state. This facelessness persists even if the creature uses magic to disguise their form. The face-stealer sprite makes a stolen face into a mask that perfectly matches the likeness of the stolen face and any creature which wears it gets a face that is indistinguishable from the creature’s (+10 to disguise checks to disguise as that creature, does not stack with +10 from disguise self/shapeshifting, but grants a +4 in that situation). The only way to restore a creature’s face is to kill the sprite which stole it or to place the mask on the creature’s face. Even then you must cast a Remove Curse or Break Enchantment spell. Alternatively a Limited Wish spell can be used to lift this curse if the caster level is at least twice the character level of the face-stealer sprite which stole the face, and a Wish or Miracle spell can reverse the effects without fail. Regardless of method the mask is destroyed in the process (a carefully worded Wish might avoid this). A face-stealer sprite wearing such a mask can allow it to split open to reveal their true face to bite or spit darts.

Skills: A face-stealer sprite is adept at moving quietly gaining a +4 racial bonus on Move Silently checks. A face-stealer sprite may use its Dexterity modifier instead of its Strength modifier for swim checks and has a +8 racial bonus on any Swim check to perform some special action or avoid a hazard. It can always choose to take 10 on a Swim check, even if distracted or endangered. It can use the run action while swimming, provided it swims in a straight line.
