I used to enjoy 8bit, but now it just seems kind of tired. I stopped reading it a wee bit back. The characters really don't seem to have any depth anymore. They used to, but now they seem really two-dimensional. It's like Brian stopped caring as much. Black Mage is just a mage who is pissed off at his friends and in love with White Mage. And he's the most complex. Fighter is just a complete idiot. Thief is just a con artist. Red Mage is just delusional. They really have just become one personality trait each, as if they're in short supply. Their relationships have become rather weak.

However, I did verily enjoy earlier strips and I commend Brian on his past work.

DrSpoon

hmmm whats wrong with each character personifying one or two traits? that is one of the main reasons that its funny, i mean who other than the personification of supid could come up with sword-chucks?

Edalmri
2005-02-07, 02:53 PM
Enthusiasm combined with a penchant for swords can do wonders. Like this one character I made, magic jarred into some sort of golem and tried to use two double swords. I forget how that turned out but it seems like fodder for DM cruelty.

I have actually come close to weilding Sword Chucks in a LARP.

Me: "If I use Poxer X to create an engery weapon, can I hurt myself with it?"

ST: No.

Me: In that case I will make a pair of . . .

ST: That's no you can't make Sword-chucks.

Nice, well currently i am working on obtaining m a set of sword-chucks in our D&D game, i just need to get me to a weaponsmith, my DM is a tad mad and has made me take an Exotic weapon prof. for it, but hey its worth it

STABBITY DEATH!!!

this was used by me as a warcry in a game of Heroquest. i was a mage with an assassins dagger (always hits, enemy still gets a chance to block). for some reason, none of the enemies i faced (aside from the BBEG) successfully defended. it was awesome

if you dont know what heroquest is, just imagine D&D for ages 6+

I've been less a fan of 8-bit recently and assumed it was because the comic was going downhill... so I went back and read the first comics and realized that it's actually gotten a lot better.

Brian Clevenger is a more funny personality than his comic, and I laugh more consistantly at his newsposts than his comic.

I like the comic (a healthy dose of cynical humour 3 times a week), but hate the community. Did you read their forums? 95% of posters there can be roughly put into one of these 2 categories:

1. OMG I <3 Blaek Mage he is like teh ub3r! i h0pe he killz Figter an Red Meg and makz hawt luv wif' Wite Mage!!!1eleven

2. I use the f word every sentence, which makes me the smartest person in the universe. Therefore, if you disagree with my humble opinions, you are a f%#$ing noob. Dude, I so rock, despite living in my parents' f%#$ing basement.

Ffffffffffffffffffffffffffff
UCK!

Anything that ugly wants YOU to die.

I hate Thief.

I blame Red Mage.

HADOKEN!

"What about that time when-" "You should stop now."

Cause your ass is outta dis world!

Rock, paper, scissors: in the eye!

Fighter:

Sword-chucks, yo!

I like swords.

When the Thing dances, is it called Thing-ama-jig?

Dude!

Thief, YOU'RE a jerk.

No spikes though. Maybe I could tape some on.

Red Mage:

Excelsior!

I have ice spells! We're saved!

*unofficial* My personal life is not on trial here!

HADOYASTOPTHIS?!

It will be like free XP!

Show me a thing that beats a natural 20, and I'll show you hateful lies.

You can't ignore me forever! I have feelings!

Thief:

Oh, I steal souls AND secrets.

I stole it. From the future.

Besides, what kind of ninja wears bright red?

They left everything that was nailed down. I did not.

Your GP or your HP!

Besides, Red Mage? You can't tell him that, but he has no daddy issues. Just me messing with his head.

Well, 8-Bit and Order of the Stick have rather reminiscent characters.

Black Mage = Belkar with Vaarsuvius' Magic/knowledge: Both are undeniably evil, like stabbing things and are probably the most violent of their group. Black Mage has a dryer sense of humor than Belkar though...

Thief is like Haley only probably more racist and much more amoral.

Red Mage... Is a bit of everyone...

Fighter is... A more literate Thog I guess with the occasional Vaarsuvius.

PePe QuiCoSE
2006-12-04, 07:58 AM
red mage would be elan, but total opposite since elan recognized being "use-impaired" while red-mage beleives que can do anything

and thief has nothing to do with Haley (at least if you read the past 200 strips of oots :P)

the only time it dissapointed me a bit this comic it was when they defeated Ur the same way they defeated the red dragon.

Its strange, I really used to love 8bit but after oots I nver looked back. For me OotS' advantage is in the tight plotting. In contrast 8-Bit really is all over the place with absolutely no sense of narrative or plot. Its not so bad now but a few months ago 8-Bit was desperately bad in this regard. Even still I wish Brian would move away from "Fetch X Orb" arcs

Cybren

8-bit is the funnier comic, especially to someone without being familiar with its source material (re: nearly it's whole viewerbase. Apperently few people played FF1...). OOTS is better at that "dramady" thing.

I guess OOTS is like Futurama in that it knows how to take itself seriously when it needs to, and is funny when it wants to be, but is pretty nerdy (as futurama was scifi).

8-bit is more like seinfeld in that it's funny and has the "no learning, no hugging" rule applied to it, just like seinfeld. (still pretty nerdy though).

Dhavaer

He's following the plot of Final Fantasy 1, so the arcs are pretty well set.

so does black mage

If 8bit was not based on FF1 and as such have its entire plot lined out I would agree with you. But what's great is that since it's got that base, he can drift away all he wants because we still know that it's going to get back on track eventually. If 8bit was not based on FF1 and as such have its entire plot lined out I would agree with you. But what's great is that since it's got that base, he can drift away all he wants because we still know that it's going to get back on track eventually. It allows him to do totally stupid things but still not break the plot. The problem occurs when you are not familiar with the plot. There was a point a few months ago when the Light Warriors were on some stupid quest (rat tail?) and I suddenly realised that I had no idea what they were doing, where they were or what their purpose was.

I think the problem is that Brian likes to indulge in his jokes a bit too much. That is, each strip contains too much humour and not enough plot to tie them together.

Oh man the "Do you need a victim?" exchange was too funny. He actually needs to hurt something to be comfortable peeing.

One thing about 8Bit is it sits directly between the OoTs style of a strict plot comedy and occaisional seriousness, and the Penny Arcade/VGcats "What the hell is plot? look some PANTS!". The only thing that springs to mind as like it in this regard is Dr McNinja.

Well, 8-Bit does have some more dramatic moments, like when Black Mage gets killed by Lich (not A Lich, but Lich, Fiend of Earth). Fighter's reaction is not exactly his goofy little self (http://www.nuklearpower.com/daily.php?date=040212).

8-bit is a remarkable comic. It's so frakkin' SIMPLE: You have a psycho, a crook, a loony, and an idiot. They are all portrayed with sprites from an ancient game. They bicker and try to kill each other.

That's pretty much it.

Clevinger has managed to make it go for over 800 comics, and dear God have there been some good moments in those 800 comics. Even when it seems a little old, as it does now, there is gold. Finding out that Black Mage feels uncomfortable urinating without a victim just made my day. Great, great comic.

Or possibly some other, fate-controlling entity that's badass enough to refer to itself in plural, like Chaos or an even-more-transcendant Sarda.

Fighter, BM, RM, thief, Garland, BB, all the fiends, EPS, king steve, bikke, vilbert and the drizzt guy are from FF1. White mage is from FF3. With the strip mentioned on the previous page, my take on it was that it was a conversation between BM and Fighter, probably near the end of the comic. BM of course is going to get hold of some even-greater power, and try to destroy the world or something. I think the conversation is between him and Fighter, who is trying to stop him. Another thing about it no-one has mentioned is the "It's not too late" and "it is for some people" lines...if you consider that, then look at the strange blood-splattered red-and-white pattern in the middle of the strip....well the red-and-white triangles look to me like the pattern on White Mage's robe.

So maybe BM kills WM? And thats what finally convinces Fighter that BM is evil? Hard to say, I just dont see BM killing WM...although given his super-evil text box it might not be the BM that is currently at large.

With the strip mentioned on the previous page, my take on it was that it was a conversation between BM and Fighter, probably near the end of the comic. That would be my guess, too. The tone is so completely serious and dramatic as opposed to the rest of the comic that it seems as if it was part of something big - presumably the end - and given that the story began with Fighter and BM, it would seem fitting if it ended with them, too.
However, last time I checked on the 8bit Theatre boards, most people seemed to think the orange boxes belonged to Fighter, and the red ones to BM.
I think it's the other way around.

"When we went to Gurgu... why did you do it like that?"

That's foreshadowing, but we've already had the Gurgu arc some time after that. As I recall, BM didn't really do anything in that volcano.

Note how 'red' responds "WE thought it would be funny". Who is "we"? Fighter certainly doesn't seem like he would do things because it "would be funny", at least not at that time.

Weird.

I thought it was rather obvious.

Someone is talking to BM (the orange boxes). It is probably in the distant future (or at some point when BM has gained ultimate power). Lots of eery foreshadowing, blah blah blah. Then they make reference to how they went to Gurgu (with BM as a hood ornament).

The "why did you do it like that" thing wasn't foreshadowing. That was just making it a funny joke.

Winterwind
2007-09-29, 03:07 PM
I always figured the "Why did you do it like that?" referred to how they stuck BM in front of their Death Trap when going to Gurgu Volcano. The orange box agreeing with the red one that it was, ultimately, funny, and BM saying in the next panel that one day he's going to look back at it and find it hilarious seems to suggest quite strongly that he is the orange box.
I doubt it's Darko and Swordopolis, because they say "remember when we went to Gurgu?". I think it must be some of the Light Warriors talking, possibly White Mage, too, but nobody else. Also, would Darko and Swordopolis talk like that? "Look back on my life"?
As for the completely different style, well, what they are saying suggests that for some reason, whoever they are, they have found enlightenment of some sort. They see things clearer than before. So the usual stupidity might have been washed away by something at this point...

To be honest, when I read that strip for the first time I assumed they were talking in the afterlife, hence the clarity.

Okay, that is a good explanation, and it does make the orange box BM. However, I don't think the red box is then Fighter, because the words don't really make sense for him. It's more likely Thief, then, because he's the kind of person who thinks it's funny to maul his teammates.

It's more likely Thief, then, because he's the kind of person who thinks it's funny to maul his teammates.Yes, that's true. The only way I could see the red box being Fighter is that by "we thought it would be funny" he means that the majority of the rest of the group thought it would be (and while Red Mage is not nearly as malicious as Thief, he would likely find that scenario funny as well). But that could have been worded much more clearly, so, yes, that would speak rather for Thief being the red box.

The only thing that really speaks against it is that I can hardly see any context into which this dialogue would fit in then. Fighter and Black Mage are, in many senses, counterparts - good vs. evil, sword vs. sorcery, and their respective mental faculties (with Fighter being much more intelligent and wise than Black Mage - who is a complete idiot - but completely unfocussed, unconcentrated, straight-forward and naive, as opposed to Black Mage being completely focussed on destruction and power gain, cunning and distrustful). So a finale between Fighter and Black Mage would make much more sense than anything else.
Of course, that might be why Brian won't do it...
