Hey all,
I'm working on a bardic college with a specific sort of spellcasting focus, and I am looking for ideas for a 3rd level bardic inspiration use: the design goal would be to emphasize and increase the impact of offensive or controlling spells. I'm considering something like "When you cast a spell that requires a saving throw, you may use a bonus action and expend one of your uses of Bardic Inspiration, rolling a bardic inspiration die and subtracting the number rolled from the result of one target's saving throw".
Ultimately this seems too powerful compared to cutting words, though it lack's that feature's flexibility. One solution I thought of was to make this power require a successful check (probably Arcana or spellcasting mod) vs. something like 10+spell slot level, or the ability (and the die?) is wasted. I don't know if this really balances it though, and more-so, 'save or save' abilities are generally frowned upon from a design standpoint.
Any thoughts on how to balance this ability, or for an alternative feature to make this college's spellcasting feel emphasized and powerful?
Thanks!
