And Rebuking too...

I intend to have Turn Undead (and outsiders, and [element/alignment] subtype creatures) be a spell, rather than a base ability.
I'm struggling to figure out how to write it up, and how to deal with the turning mechanic.

As is I am taking inspiration from the Caster Level check the SRD variant (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/variant/classes/classFeatureVariants.htm#turningUndeadVariantLevel Check) suggests where the turning mechanic is: 1d20+CL+Cha v 10+HD+Cha+Turn Resistance.

But I am open to suggestions as to how to go about this, or consequences I may not have forseen.

Well it's probably not very well balanced but:

Turn Undead

Universal[Good]

Level: Clr 1
Components: V, DF
Casting Time: 1 Standard Action
Range: 60 ft.
Area: Cone-shaped Burst
Duration: Instantaneous or 1 round/CL
Saving Throw: Will Partial

The caster rolls 2d6+CL+Cha Mod. This number represents the number of HD of undead the cleric can affect. Any undead with HD equal to the caster's cleric level or lower that fail their save are destroyed. Those that succeed are shaken for a number of rounds equal to the caster's cleric level. Undead with more HD the the caster has cleric levels are unaffected.
