I was trying to puzzle my way through the best build for someone relying on Elk-Totem Barbarian and Ranger for a 'supreme overland movement' build...

It requires Barbarian 6+ and Ranger 1+; but beyond that I'm not sure... Strength based lance with more Barbarian/Hunter Ranger? Dexterity based with rogue levels (expertise: animal handling) or Fighter levels?

You can guide a party an rushed 16 miles an hour, or an easy 48 miles a day even without a road

Any suggestions on how to piece it all together?

I would go for either Ranger 4/Barb 16 or Barb 4/Ranger 16; getting level 5 at both would be just dead.

Ranger 3/Barbarian 17 is probably the least complicated lance-using version... Start as ranger for Dex save?

-Half-Orc (16/15/16/8/12/8)
-Hunter (horde breaker); Favored Enemy: beast; favored terrain: plains
-Totems: eagle/elk/tiger
-ASI: Mounted Combat, +2 Strength, +2 Strength... Then... Savage attacker/charger (not much necessary past the basics)
-Skills: survival, animal handling, survival, perception, nature
-Spells: goodberry, long strider, hunter's Mark

When raging, if two opponents are near eachother, four attacks at advantage dealing d12+11, critting for 5d12+11
