Did you do the sketch Giant? I would assume....... how'd ya manage that?

Tricia
2006-08-20, 08:01 PM
Huh. Been a while since we've had a "stick figure" gag.

Though this one is one a bit more indirectly...

Very good, though. I liked it!

But is that sketch artist spouse to be some real person?

Nothing like seeing how normal NPCs react to a main villain's antics to put the heroes in a good light. :)

Hah... I laughed at the "Pixie Dust" thing... ;)

Great comic!

Wow. And I was having a really crappy day, just finished a huge argument with my best friend. And then I come here: a huge smile just when I needed it most. :)

Thanks, Rich. Very appreciated.

I swore I'd never do this, but since I'm editting this post to make a more extensive review, I might as well say it: First time making first page! Wheee.

My two favorite things: "Ye olde crime scene" and sniffing pixie dust. :)

Nice "Airplane" reference.

Well done as always.

First page. Ahem.

The sketching is very funny. The two officers at the scene remind me of Vimes and Carrot, too. ;D

Wow, Cliff Port looks sweet, what with the various hot air balloons and flying contraptions.

HA! (Weird bumpy things between their eyes...)

Nice one.

edit: Still nothing further for the MAP (http://www.giantitp.com/cgi-bin/yabb/YaBB.pl?board=comics;action=display;num=1144628756 ;start=0), but DAMN Cliffport looks cool and exciting.

Has Rich been watching Dr Who?

;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

Fabulous! Cliffport (hot air balloons, zeppelins, and 3-masted sailing ships!) is great, the "ye olde crime scene do not cross" tape -- didn't notice that right off, but best of all the last 3 panels!

"At least I still have my webcomic."

ROFL!

2006-08-20, 08:40 PM
Great! Now we know how Nale an Thog would look as non-stick figures. ;D That's real cool!

So Rich CAN draw. That's one solved mistery at least.

Been away for a couple of days and I thought this thread would have a zillion replies, but no, I guess the strip just got uploaded.

Loved the tape, but my favorite line was the 'what are those bumpy things between their eyes?' one.

Excellent job, Rich. Wish I could do a strip with so many jokes in it AND still be able to tell a continuing story.

Deckmaster
2006-08-20, 09:21 PM
Another comic filled with quotable quotes. An awesome looking new town. An NYPD Blue parody, a stick figure joke, and a webcomic joke all in one strip.

How do you do it, Rich?

EDIT: Me love sketchy Thog. Also, page 2 woot!

Go ahead poster you're on the boards.

Thanks Giant. Long time reader, first time poster. I really like your work and...

Get on with it.

Oh umm right. Anyway a good comic nice to see how the bad guys are keeping into fighting shape. Also like the sketches and Airplane reference. Can't wait for the next one.

Amazing. All the comics lately have been wonderful, but this one was the cherry on the cake. Or something like that. The sketches are fantastic, Thog is hilarious.

2006-08-20, 10:01 PM
i loved this comic, awesome plus!
anyway, i think that the sketch looks like some of the artwork in the fanart section... which i can't find at the moment...
anyway, 'at least i have my webcomic!'

Woah, that sketch of Thog is marvelous. I just love his eyes, it really gives of the gentle part of him. ;D

Axl_Rose
2006-08-20, 10:25 PM
Wooo page 3. Probably coulda made Page 1 if I didn't take time to actually read the comic lol

Grunjon
2006-08-20, 10:26 PM
I think that the reason things are "sloppy" at the crime scene is because of Thog, not Nale. When Thog gets upset, Nale just sits back and watches. When Thog's tired, the Linear Guild leaves.

I take it that Cliffport's supplies of ice cream and puppies and rocket skates have gotten very low lately, and Thog's been on a murderous rampage left and right!

And yeah, I betcha that Elan's arrival at Cliffport will include bumping into these CPPD fellows. :)

As far as the person a page or so back who was confused about the joke, saying that the sketches were top-notch: that's the point. Top-notch sketches have no place in a stick-figure world! To the stick figure characters, a top-notch sketch looks like an amateur "hack job" by an artist who should be, er...

...doing webcomics? :D

soni
2006-08-20, 10:27 PM
yay!Thog (or, a horribly drawn ::cough:: represntation of him) makes an appearance!

Webcomic joke? Check!
OOTS "nose" joke? Check!
Airplane reference? Check!

It's a trifecta; congratulations Rich! ;D

2006-08-20, 10:40 PM
So it would seem that Cliffport is indeed a both a port and a cliff. A small part of me really wanted it to be some land-locked place in the middle of a vast flatland - but the wide shot of the city is so cool that I'm getting over it fast. :)

Tobimaro
2006-08-20, 10:40 PM
First, I like the sketches of Nale and Thog, even if they are not recognizable by the Chief (lay off those cigars, mister). The sketches makes me wish that I had gone to GenCon. Maybe next year. And the cameo of Rich in the OotS comes to an end. ;)

Anyways, I do like the look of Cliffport, and all of the lines surrounding the severed body parts was a good hidden gem.

And fifteen massacres? Wow, sounds like Nale and Thog have been busy being bad. :o

Felinoid
2006-08-20, 10:41 PM
If Nale is trying to frame OotS, he's doing a piss-poor job of it. It worked when people just described Thog as bald, but a half-orc Roy ain't.

I don't know if a lot of people are aware of it anymore, but when OotS first came out (and I suppose he still does, to a certain degree), Rich got a lot of flak because of the simple artistic style. Most people assumed that, because he didn't draw lush characters, he was clearly a "talentless hack". So yeah, the criticism the sketch artist is getting is Rich exorcising a few professional demons.

But it's in the F.A.Q. that he chooses to draw stick figures for the strip's purposes. Also I saw his name on another comic strip that had a really different art style.

Yeah, there's a reason why that's considered a Frequently Asked Question.

As for the other comic, it's called Five Foot Steps, I believe, and is published in Dragon Magazine, if memory serves. You can find some of them on the Wizards of the Coast website, I think....

How do they explain the big hole in Xykon's skull between his eyes and his mouth?

Wow! The establishing shot of Cliffport was great - for some reason I really liked the zepplins (?) and hot air balloons :p

I was really expecting the "And there's no connection we can find" thing to be followed by an obvious connection, but I guess that would be a little hackneyed.

Also: did I see an "Airplane!" reference in the last panel? Methinks I dost!

Midnight Son

linky (http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=rpga/hq/polyffs1) for the Five Foot Steps comic. Really a shame he hasn't done any more of those.

2006-08-20, 11:34 PM
I'm surprised no one's mentioned this yet, as it got so much bandwidth two comics ago: Cliffport gets treated as two words, just like New York (CPPD Blue). Explains why Nale seemed to only get 24 words in that Sending.

I don't EVEN wanna know which orifice they use...

Great comic, my personal favorite part was the 'CPPD' uniforms/platemail.

Although... why is there a severed arm almost outside of the yellow tape?

hey, i got to reading the entire linked thread, and i got to wondering about how this quote might relate to V's gender:

After reading Understanding Comics by Scott McCloud, I figured out what it is about Order of the Stick's style that makes it work so well. Because of the visual abstractness of the characters, readers must fill in any details that are absent. This means that they will fill in the details similarly to themselves or people with whom they are familiar, making it easier to empathize with the characters.

Awesome! The best strip since the party left Azure City!

This so reminds me of my (sword & sorcery) RPG-Group. We played a detective-scenario and investigated a crime scene at a taylors. To keep the idle folk from rushing in and thus destroying important traces, the chambermaid from our group had a glorious idea: She took some yellow ribbon and blocked the entrance door. Thus "Ye olde city guard line" was invented!

"I still have my webcomic!" Is there some selfreference by Mr. Burlow?

However, I'm not convinced the "rookie" is "the Giant" per se. I did like the sketch, though. I think it'd be fun to see Rich draw out the entire gang in "non-stick" form! Just for fun.

Loved the sketches, loved the "pixie dust"... all in all, a fun comic! ;D ;D

2006-08-21, 09:13 AM
I'm kinda worried where pixie dust comes from. Are pixies held captive and shaken regularly? Are they picked up and sniffed on demand? Are the pixies deliberately distributing addictive substances or are they victims?

Must scrub brain with acid.

the funny thing is, the same thing happened on south park, not long ago. I LOLd then, too. this was great, and I love how evil nale looks, complete with "spiky devil beard." the cop stuff is cool as well.

the view of cliffport is very well done as well. it seems OotSland is quite advanced, baloons and derigibals, as well as single-shot guns.

This was AWESOME, AWESOME, AWESOME!!!

SOOOO GREAT!!!

From Balloons to barfing "I´m a trainee"s -
to chalk-marks on the floor around some stick-arms.

the bandanas with words on them to stop the croud (Ye old crime scene - do not cross)

the comment: now that I´m done with my scene-setting plot exposition...

the movement of the smoke of his cigar

to the best thing ever: THE SKETCH drawing of Nale and Thog! And the comment "you are fired" because of the "strange look".

PERFECT! Just the right hint of cynical self-deprecation for a Monday morning! And I echo everyone else on the blimps - cool!

Nice work on the sketches. They look totally natural and non-stick-y, but it's still Nale and Thog.

Soooo, long time since i've seen airplane.
What exactly is the reference to it??
In case you're referring to the "Vimesian air" part: Vimes is the commander of another fictional guard force, the City Watch (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ankh-Morpork_City_Watch) in Pratchett's Discworld.

lol, 2 thumbs up !!! ;D

I wonder if there's any point to those murders other than Nale working out that whole "20 words per spell thing". Or do normal people count as monster encounters to Evil types?

It's probably just Thog getting bored again. The CR of Level 0 commoners is too low for the Linear Guild to get any experience.

Anyone else see the 'BLORFFF!!!' and immediately thought of Black Mage throwing out his insides as a defensive method, like the sea cucumber.

Great comic, I laughed for several minutes from the artist gag. I wonder how webcomics work in D&D? Does it require casting of the spell web?

Wow! There's alot of detail in this comic and the whole artist sketch gag was funny.

Liked the Ye Olde Crime Scene.

So does this mean they'll have to flee on a balloon?

Hmm. Interesting.

"At least I still have my webcomic."

I find myself saying that all the time...

So that's a lot of random people the Linear Guild is running around killing. :-/ Yikes.

First page. Ahem.

The sketching is very funny. The two officers at the scene remind me of Vimes and Carrot, too. ;D

Vimes and Carrot? What Discworld book have you been reading?

To even remotely near Vimes and Carrot it'd have to be Guards! Guards! But even there.... no way, how are these possibly Vimes and Carrot? (Other than the cigar, but cigars on senior police officers aren't uncommon. Like Columbo or whatever his name was.)

As for the comic, great stuff. I won't break the pattern with anything new, however, and will also say the final "bumpy things?" line was most amusing.

Fab as always - now I'm looking forward to all the CSI style things you could do

Who needs fingerprints when you have divination spells?
Or you can interrogate any pigions and rats in the viscinity, as well as the corpses themselves. and there's a few psionic powers that would be useful as well.

Another funny OOTS brought to us by the giant. Keep them coming, but faster! lol

"What are those weird bumpy things in between their eyes?"

Keeps getting funnier and funnier.

Who needs fingerprints when you have divination spells?
Perhaps they used divination spells to come up with the "sketches"? However, the low level divination spells won't come up with names unless the people murdered happen to know the murderer, and that doesn't seem to be what's going on here. Also, since the divination spells aren't 100% accurate, any other evidence they can get will build a stronger case against the perps. Not to mention that they might find better clues as to where the perps are hiding or where they are going.

Very nice comic. I just have one question. How many of these people are likely to have 1000gp put away in a reincarnation fund?

Does Cliffport remind anyone else of Ptolus? Makes me wonder if Rich has The Big Book.

Haw haw haw!! A stick-figure caricature of Dennis Franz! At least he didn't show off his naked butt....

Aw, crud--someone beat me to the South Park reference, though....

Lovely use of ontomotopaeia--I usu. render vomiting as "GLUTT!", m'self....

Has anyone found the link from the guest artist where the OotSers and V in partiqular (as I recall) are demonstrating against noses ? ;)

As we say "Die Schönheit liegt im Auge des Betrachters"

In a stick-figure-world such a great artist is worth nothing - even is being fired.

So: Don´t take every bad comment seriously - maybe the scetch ist right - the people looking at it are wrong.

Nice one, mr. Giant. Very deep.

Heh. I guess Mr Burlew really "nose" what's best for us readers and our senses of humour.

Reminds me of that extra written by a guest author; gotta look for it........

(Got it. Look for the one by Chuck Rowles (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/GuestStrips.html). Scroll down.)

Just wanted to say that, while that last panel is pretty darn hilarious, what really had me laughing out loud was the chalk outlines of the stick limbs. Priceless!

And as usual, I had to run through the strip again to catch the subtle amazing stuff, like the cigar smoke. Man, I love this comic.
