A spell to make awakened PCs slightly more viable. As with monstrous races, an awakened animal/plant with only 1 racial HD replaces it with its first class level.

Spell Resistance: Yes

You awaken a tree or animal to humanlike sentience. To succeed, you must make a Will save (DC 10 + the animal’s current HD, or the HD the tree will have once awakened).

The awakened animal or tree is friendly toward you. You have no special empathy or connection with a creature you awaken, although it serves you in specific tasks or endeavors if you communicate your desires to it.

An awakened tree has characteristics as if it were an animated object, except that it gains the plant type. An awakened tree gains the ability to move its limbs, roots, vines, creepers, and so forth, and it has senses similar to a human’s. See the "Awakened" template for details.

An awakened animal becomes a magical beast (augmented animal). An awakened animal can’t serve as an animal companion, familiar, or special mount. See the "Awakened" template for details.

An awakened tree or animal can speak one language that you know, plus one additional language that you know per point of Intelligence bonus (if any).

XP Cost
250 XP.

Awakened Creature
An awakened creature is an animal or tree that has been granted humanoid intelligence by the awaken spell. They resemble their unawakened counterparts, save for their ability to speak (and move, for awakened plants).

Creating An Awakened Creature
"Awakened" is an acquired template that can be added to any living, corporeal animal or inanimate plant (referred to hereafter as the base creature).

An awakened creature uses all the base creature’s statistics and special abilities except as noted here.

Size and Type
An awakened animal's type changes to magical beast (augmented animal). An awakened tree is a creature of the plant type and it has Hit Dice (d8) as an animated object of its size (2d8 for a Medium creature), with a base attack bonus equal to ¾ total Hit Dice (as cleric) and good Fortitude saves. Otherwise, do not recalculate the creature’s Hit Dice, base attack bonus, or saves. Size is unchanged.

Speed
An awakened tree has many roots and gains a base land speed as an animated object of its size with multiple legs (50 feet for a Medium awakened tree). As a wooden creature, an animated tree can float and has a swim speed equal to one-half its base land speed.

Armor Class
An awakened tree has a natural armor bonus as an animated object of its size (+4 for a Medium awakened tree).

Natural Attacks
An awakened tree gains a slam attack as an animated object of its size (1d6 for a Medium creature).

Special Qualities
An awakened creature has all the special qualities of the base creature, plus the following special qualities.

Darkvision (Ex)
An awakened animal gains darkvision out to 60 feet.

Plant Traits (Ex)
An awakened tree gains the traits of the plant type, namely:


Low-light vision.
Immunity to all mind-affecting effects (charms, compulsions, phantasms, patterns, and morale effects).
Immunity to poison, sleep effects, paralysis, polymorph, and stunning.
Not subject to critical hits.
Proficient with its natural weapons only.
Proficient with no armor.
Plants breathe and eat, but do not sleep.

Hardness (Ex)
An awakened tree has hardness 5 due to its wooden nature.

Abilities
The base mental ability scores of awakened creatures are all 10's and 11's (or roll 3d6 for unique individuals). All awakened creatures gain +2 Wisdom.

The base physical ability scores of awakened creatures are all 10's and 11's (or roll 3d6 for unique individuals). Awakened creatures gain adjustments to their physical ability scores as though they were normal animals of their kind (for awakened animals) or animated objects of their size (for awakened trees). These adjustments are equal to the base animal’s or animated object's physical ability scores -10 or -11.

Awakened trees have Constitution scores (10 or 11 plus animated object CR for nonunique trees, 3d6 plus animated object CR for unique trees).

Skills
An awakened tree gains skill points as a plant creature and has skill points equal to (2 + Int modifier) × (HD +3). Do not include Hit Dice from class levels in this calculation—the awakened tree gains plant skill points only for its racial Hit Dice, and gains the normal amount of skill points for its class levels. Treat skills from the base creature’s list as class skills, and other skills as cross-class. An awakened tree's class skills are Hide, Listen, Knowledge (nature), Move Silently, Spot, and Survival.

Feats
An awakened tree gains feats as appropriate for a creature of its Hit Dice.

Challenge Rating
As base creature (awakened animal); as animated object of its size (animated tree).

That would be the next logical step - there are a bunch of awaken spells that have been published (for oozes, constructs, undead, maybe others too!). However I'm shamelessly lazy and can't bring myself to do the templates haha :D
