Hello, my friends and I are starting up a Tomb of Annihilation campaign and I decided I wanted to base my character off Steve Irwin the crocodile hunter. The problem I'm having is I'm not sure how to build him and would like your input. We are using standard array for stat generation. Multi classing and feats are allowed. Only published books so no UA but if you have a really good idea that uses UA i might be able to convince my DM to allow it.

Well, given how nature-oriented Mr. Irwin was, I would say that either a Ranger (Beast Master), or a Druid (any, really) would work best. A multi-class of this would probably fit the concept best, but I always hate to MC a BM Ranger, especially if the revised Ranger UA isn't allowed.

I would also say that I would give him the Entertainer Background, and have his performances be all about the wondrous creatures that he has encountered, including using Conjure Animals to enhance the performance and allow him to show the creatures to the audience.

Probably be a Variant Human with the Grappler Feat for when you really need to restrain a croc.

- Ranger is an obvious choice for Favoured Enemy (Beasts).
- Go Hunter, taking Colossus Slayer, for specialisation in one-on-one combat.
- Multiclass Rogue for Expertise in Athletics and grapple-tastic shenanigans.
- Go Thief for Fast Hands to hog-tie critters you've grappled.
- Adopt a comedic, but not too insulting Australian accent and bust out the Steve Irwin phrase-book.

You're all set!

Ranger seems like a great fit. But how about this for a twist...

Class: Bard (Lore)
Race: Human (Variant) or Elf (Wood) (it's a fantasy world, who says Steve has to be human?)
Background: Sage

Steve was a naturalist and charismatic tv show host. So I figured, give him the sage background to represent his naturalist background. Then have him be a bard. Maybe pick some druid spells for his magical secrets.

That's a good way to approach the character. But only if you're focusing on the actual TV show host part, the real Steve Irwin was an accomplished bush guide.

I'd go with a forest gnome as race, built in ability to talk to the small critters.

ranger almost seems to obvious, I think I would go druid, maybe focusing later as a conjurer in combat so the beasts fight for you.

Unfortunately, stat wise I think he had a lot more charisma than Wis/Int (no offense) but the classes don't line up with that.

Thanks.

I'd probably choose ranger. Possibly with entertainer background (maybe). But I figured bard (lore) was worth mentioning.

Ranger, either subclass, racial enemy beast... a small race so he can routinely piss off bigger animals. Goblin or Halfling?

Ranger. Use the UA revenant. Favoured enemy:fish

To my mind, it has to be a grappler character. I'd go Totem Barbarian, personally. I'd definitely get Tavern Brawler. Always choose to do nonlethal damage to Beasts.
