Wondering if anyone uses AIM or similarly available program to play Dnd etc. online? By that I mean no charge to use (unlike mIRC which costs 20 bucks). Anyone?

OpenRPG is a better gaming resource.

mIRC doesn't cost anything... just don't register. It says you have limited days, but then when that time is up you can still use it just like normal...

Honestly, the best I've ever seen is Fantasy Grounds (http://www.fantasygrounds.com).
It isn't free, but IMHO the one-time fee of twenty bucks (for a player) or 35 (DM client) is exceedingly worth it.
Also, if you have it as a player, you can upgrade to the DM client later for the difference in price.

I (used) to play on MSN, until everyone just stopped showing up for the games.

I beg to differ. I've chat-gamed with three different groups, including a game I've been running that's three weeks short of its two-year anniversary and two games that survived for six months despite the players being scattered over something like twelve hours worth of time-zones. I actually find it to be a better medium than live-chat or play-by-post--the pace is almost as good as a live game, only I can do my homework and play at the same time; I get to see my words before I use them, which somehow triples my articulation; and I can color-code my NPCs. The color-coding in particular is why I stick to AIM--custom colors rock.

Exactly, all you have to deal with is a pop up every time you start up mIRC.
