What do characters get to do before a story starts

Is there any specific ruling to this. Can I play a Hexblade and have a weapon ready to go with Hex warrior or is that up to DM?

When you start session one, you are a full level 1 class. Meaning you have your hexblade made and everything all set for hex warrior.


Now, a DM may want a session zero where you set out the warlock pacts or you RP it even. Or the DM may want the pact made up and in writing so it can be used as part of the game later one.

Before the story starts, characters get into the position they are when the story starts. If you start the story lying on the floor of the pub with a nose broken by the meaty fist of a half-orc woman you were chatting up, then you were chatting up a half-orc woman before the story starts.

Lol will make sure not to do that but was more curious about having a Hexblade online at the start of a game even though itd take till level 2 to get really going
