The goblin snorts. "Nae, Dagg. Ah don' ken if there's anythin' of worth, Ah'm more worried aboot someone or somethin' waitin' in tha dark." Despite the conversation, Ozz continues his search, especially looking for tracks of any sort.

The place is long deserted, and clearly, there are no treasures to be had, as Dagg said. Any valuables that were might left here, were taken away already, and only stones remain.

Ozz looks around, but can't find anything interesting. The temple ruins are decorated with creeping vines as nature starts to take over the place. The rocky ground and the stone floor of the temple doesn't store tracks of any kind, but everything is dead silent. A small graveyard is situated near the temple, but the tombstones are cracked and destroyed by now.

Dafydd

Dafydd takes an appreciative look around at the temple. "Well, it's not exactly a king's summer retreat, but there's certainly no call for dampened spirits on account of our surroundings, friends. Let us to rest, who may. Dafydd sheds his plate armor and, for lack of a proper bed, uncomfortably settles down into a more typical elf-like meditating posture.

Kaz looks toward the smell, and if it comes from the direction of the graveyard then he will start waking people up, beginning with whoever's closest to the smell.

The foul stench of rotting death indeed comes from the direction Kaz expected it.

Just as Kaz starts to wake up his companions, a vaguely humanoid figure crawls from behind a wall. It looks like a human, but it's flesh if rotten, even missing at places. The stink of decay and corruption is overwhelming, and the stench itself wakes up those who were sleeping until then.

The creature closes on you, sometimes using it's hands to help his movement, it's left leg is visibly broken at several places.

Dafydd attacks the undead, and delivers a strong hit, piercing through the chest of the rotting corpse.

Ozzgar can't get a good shot on the undead, which is surrounded by three of his companions, giving it cover.

But when you arrive at Glyskoe, you find that the town is totally deserted, you can't see a single soul on the streets. It looks like as if they left the village hurriedly. By the size of the town, you guess that it has a population around 100, not a real village, more of a small farming settlement, with only a handful of houses, no public buildings aside from a small granary.

Nothing in the scenario moves, saves for the foxes, who came out from the woods, sensing that the humans of the settlement have gone away.

You leave the small farming village behind, and head towards Shrewsbury with haste. You didn't met with a single soul on the road during your travel.

The sun was already set down by the time you climbed the last hill on the road. From the hilltop, you could see the whole valley Shrewsbury's located in. Altough it was already dark, you could see the lights of the city. But you also see a frightening scene; only a mile away from the city, you see a lot of campfires set up in linear rows and colums. It's impossible to identify the people around the fires, but the precise pattern of the campfires, combined with dozens of torches going around the whole camping site show clearly that this belongs to a very well organized military unit. You can estimate their numbers to be around 1000-2000, probalby a whole legion or two.

Upon inspecting the city again form the distance, you see that there are many torches in the guard towers, and even on the city walls. Shrewsbury is a big city in Nabarrian terms, with nearly 80.000 inhabitants. The city gates are closed, and barricaded, you can see that even from this distance.

Early in the morning, you woke up and prepared to continue your journey. In the sunlight, the Burubu legion looks even more fearful. Going in a circle around Shrewsbury to avoid the attackers, you descended to the valley behind the town, and marched at a steady pace.

It was in the early afternoon, when you first spot a lonely man in the disance, who were heading towards to you in a moderate place. Kaz

Kaz eyes the newcomer with slight distrust; a well armed man on the road near an enemy army can't be a coincidence.
"Well, I for one will always welcome another walking companion. As for the matter we travel on, we're simply delivering something to an area nearby. It's only that important to us messangers and the recipients."

Extending his hand, he says "Name's Kaz, nice to meet ya."

Does a sense motive work on other pc's? I'll probably have to make a bluff check if it does.

It's already early afternoon when you arrive to a hilltop on the other side of the city. The legion haven't moved from it's camping position, and the Shrewsburians are still barricaded into their city.

Your the highway is just at the downside of the hill you' standing upon. Altough the road is not as deserted as the other was, you saw two horsemen riding on it. They are probably Burubu scouts, and one was heading towards the main camp, and the other is away from it.

With the cleric of St. Cuthbert joined to your party, you can continue your travels with the blessing of the almighty god of retribution. Altough it is certainly not enough to face the Burubu legion, you can now travel more safely. The road still has a light traffic from Burubu scout units, but Karos knows a route away from the main trade route, next to the farmlands and forests of Shrewsbury. It is a twisting and non-kept road, but offers safety from the scouts of the Burubu. You loose some minor time by going on the safer road.

With Ozzgar's eye and Karos' local knowledge, you can travel relatively fast, away from any possible threats. Around midday, you reach another small village, evacuated just as the tiny village before Shrewsbury was. Everything of value had been carried to the closed city, and which couldn't been brought away, was burned so the Burubu won't be able to put their hands on it.

This small town, called 'Albastra's Bless' is the westernmost settlement of the Regency. Behind it lies the so-called 'borderlands', a wild, less civilised area, which was never been really part of the Nabarrian kingdoms. Townsflok whisper strange tales about these lands, where many half-elves and kobold-folk live in hidden forest villages. They don't belong to neither the Regency or the elf kingdom, but both feels that they should.

It's your decision to start to the borderlands immediately, or if you want to do anything in the deserted village of Albastra's Bless.

Well, it wouldn't hurt to do a quick sweep of the village, make sure everyone's out safely, we have got a good half day left of light to use after all. Dafydd opines nonchalantly.

During the day's trek, whenever talking seemed safe, Dafydd brought Karos up to speed on the heretofore of the party's quest: how they had banded together in Wolverineton, Kaz appointed leader there, been accosted by gibberlings in the forest and found an empty wagon, as well as a treasure box sent as ransom for a gentleman's daughter to a knavish playboy (that treasure still in the party's keeping, to be dealt with after the more urgent mission at present), and of their losing two party members after an attack by a ghoul one night, while camping. You leave the deserted village behind, and continue your journey with haste. By the time the night falls, you reach to the ruined Walls of War.

In the ancient times, when humans and elves waged wars against each other, the king of the united human lands, Khi-Ray the Conquister, built a great wall at the end of his conquests, which marked the new borders, and were witnesses to several wars after that. Now the walls are mostly ruined, but it is still there after a millenia. Peasants fear to pass the wall out of superstitions, so while the human side is irrigated, the other side is a dense, dark forest. Elves have retreated ever further since, so the land on the other side of the walls are called the Borderlands. There are no kingdoms, no laws, so a lot of pursued highwayman find safety at one of the tribes of the land.

But their faces, bloody they might be, are still in relatively good condition.

Ozz is quick to rush forwards to the clearing, and chack the situation. However, the dark forests with the fog full of rotting gases makr it difficult for the goblin to properly search fot possible ambushers.

When you all thought that it is safe to investigate the clearing, you stepped out from the forest. (the clearing is really small, 40x40 feet) You were looking around, when suddenly you heard Lorrick. "This fire was extinguished only minutes ago!" You saw the human sitting next to the fireplace, touching the warm ash.

Next moment, you hear screaming war cries, and then, from the top of the trees, several kobolds jump at you. They are almost naked, don't carry any weapons, and they all have an almost diabolical, red light in their eyes.

There are four gnomes and four goblins, every one of them is hostile, and is about to attacking you.

Dafydd

Dafydd watches the approaching swarm of kobolds with an unpleasant mixture of loathing and amusement. He knows that kobolds are fierce warriors by reputation, and his experience with Ozz had proved such to him, but he still could not repress the sensation that his group was being accosted by children.

Pushing his hesitation firmly aside, he strides toward the nearest of these obviously evil creatures and attempts to plunge his blade into its heart.

Dafydd will move toward nearest foe while drawing his sword, flank with someone if possible (avoiding aoo), and smite the little twerp

The ambushers are using the element of surprise, and they catch you unprepared.

From the back, two goblins jump at Lorrick, and attack the human. Lorrick is skilled fighter, but still one of the red-eyed goblins reach him with his black clawlike fingers, wounding the human.

A goblin rushes Dagg, and cuts the dwarf's arm with it's demonlike claws. It's becoming clear that these creatures are not normal kobolds. A faint smell of brimstone can be smelled, and that might not be the best news.

The fourth goblin jumps at Daffyd's head from the trees, and his claws injure Daffyd in his unprotected face.

Ozzgar, altough still sick, is the first to act. He dras his bow, and one of the two arrows hit a goblin, who is surprised from Ozzgar's agility, but doesn't show any signs of pain.

He tears out the arrow from his hip, and charges Ozz. Luckily for him, Ozz was prepared, and dodged the deadly claws.

Another gnome charges Kaz, and hits the human with his claws.

The last two gnomes both attack Karos, flanking the human cleric. But their attacks bounce off the mighty armor of Karos.

Dagg screams in rage, and swings his heavy axe. The infernal looking goblin didn't even had a chance against the dwarf, the sharp axe send him to the ground insantly.

Kaz stepped back, and shot an arrow at his attacker. Altough he did not miss the target from 5 feet, the attack failed to bring his foe down.

Daffyd shook down the goblin from his neck, and punished him with a brutal cut directly into the chest, altough just like his brethren, the goblin fails to realize the giant, open wound at his side.

Karos attacks one of his opponents, but misses the little agile creature.

Lorrick steps back and attack one of his attackers, driving his sword into the shoulder of a goblin.

Seeing that most members of your team is either heavily injured, or is under the effect of one of his demonic attacks, the infernal creature grows confident, and turns towards Dafydd, the paladin.

Daffyd shouts and swings his sword again, determined to bring down the demon. He strikes swift and accurate, driving his sword right through the demon's head.

The dretch screams in shock for a short time, then it starts burning with infernal flames, which engulf him in quickly. The demon radiates intense heat, and Daffyd must drop his sword in order to save his hand from burning. The demon screams and roars, faling to the ground, with the sword still sticking out of it'ts head.

After a few seconds of this infernal fire, the dretch is consumed, and only dust remains. As soon as the dust settles, Daffyd can see his weapon laying on the ground. But the trusty longsword is now twisted by the hellish forces consuming the demon. It has a distorted geometry, and magical runes are engraved into the blade, emitting creepy light, which keeps changing colour between maroon and olive green. Yet, despite the changes, Daffyd reckognizes the weapon as his sword. The colour of the runes and the light they emit usually change colours constantly but slowly, altough some times it changes following a pattern that could be best described as a violent outburst.

On the ground, in the dust where the demon disappeared, there are two small gems on the ground, one looking like a runy, and another one like an emerald.

Soon, the nauseating vapour disappears, and you can breathe once again, and Lorrick and Ozzgar returns to the group as well.

It is around afternoon when you are ready to go again, altough it's hard to tell, since the sun barely shines through the high trees of this haunted forest. Liittle is known about the Borderlands, but you suspect that you may find a village by the end of the day, or at least a safe place to sleep, should you decide to march on.

Karos heals Daffyd and Dagg, who sustained the most injury during the fight with the Drerch. (after the healing Dagg is at 10, Daffyd is at 8, if I'm correct.)

Retribution is what those who have broken the law deserve and we followers of St. Cuthbert have become the hand of retribution. I would not seek revenge if a magistrate ordered the hanging of a friend, unless the magistrate acted outside of the law. Dagg

Dagg retrieves his ax before returning to the rear of the party. He resumes his earlier good mood by reciting the saga of Galmeen the Giantslayer. His tone is thundering, helped by being in the Dwarven language.

I tried to make something like an epic saga, but it reads more like a bad short story. Sorry for how painful it is to read, it was all I could come up with on short notice. And it's in Dwarven, so if you don't know that, you won't be able to understand it.

"Gayaforth and Goisen, both masters of war
unmatched by any but for one -
Galmeen, Great Giantslayer of the northern reaches,
Defiler of the denizens of the deep pit of Doryum Khroomshaw,

Upon his birth, the priestess of his tribe spake thusly;
'Now is born to you one to lead you, a true scion of your fate, he who shall save you and destroy you, and live on utterly as a hero despite all he does.'
He was honored, sent out to fight his clan's enemies, and every time turned back victorious.
His was the way of slaughter, uncontrollable at the best of times and indestructible at the worst,
He saved many, and was a hero, and truly was a gift from Moradin to the beleaguered people who spawned him.

He was chief of the clan and life was good.
He was master of war and life was good.
He married and raised children, and life was good.
And then the giants came.

They destroyed the homes of the people, like the brutish monsters they are,
Killing everything in sight, destroying everything else, all for no other reason than their own sick amusement,
Through and through the streets battle raged, foes to the end on one side refusing to give an inch, and on the other in their mindless bloodlust refusing to retreat.
A hundred good dwarves fell that dark day, and yet Galmeen was there always, rallying them, charging back at the idiotic ogres.
They could not, however, for all their might grasp victory from the all-encompassing jaws of defeat.
A giant, huge even by the standards of its monstrous kin, painted blue from horrifying head to filthy ankles, watched them run with glee, laughing hysterically as all around him their town burned.

That day, Galmeen swore and oath to find this giant, and lay upon him ten thousand agonies, such that he may curse his very existence.
He abandoned his clan to their nomadic ways and took on a new life.
Galmeen hunted, alone, for a year, journeying throughout all the forgotten mountain valleys and peaks, slaying giants wherever he found them, always looking for the blue-skinned one that haunted his dreams and consumed his thoughts.
In his mind, he could still see his family burning, his friends dying, and his life destroyed.
In an act of injustice by the gods, it was not the weapon of a foe that killed him, for he was invincible in combat.
No, it was an unholy plague, in all likelihood conjured by the giants to escape his righteous cause.
Some say he travels the mountains even now, an unliving being with one final task to perform before it can shed this mortal realm. Every night, the giant answers for his sins in his sleep, knowing that death, unstoppable and infinitely patient, stalks him."

By the end, his eyes are brimming with tears, a combination of vindictive pleasure, anger, and deep sadness.

Dagg

Dagg thinks silently for a moment, trying to mentally translate the song, then replies, "It is the tale of one of the greatest heroes of my tribe. His name was Galmeen the Giantslayer. He was a great warrior, unmatched in any weapon, and chieftain of the clan for a century. He expanded our border, and drove the wild giants and orcs native to the lands around our mines out. The clan flourished, and we could not even count our wealth... until those murdering dogs attacked." He spits, and his voice takes on a cold, hard edge. "Giants and ogres surrounded the exterior of the mine, bombarded it night and day. We sent runners through the mountains to call help from our allies, but none came. Day by day, our forces were whittled down, until finally they charged over the walls like a great swarm of locusts..." He stops for a moment, trying to quell the rising anger in his tone. When he resumes, his voice is lifeless. The elderly and children escaped through the mines, for they knew the town was lost. The remainder of our warriors, my father among them, had their last stand in the entrance to the mines, holding off the infernal giants forces for as long as they could. They were each heroes, but each fell eventually. Galmeen was not in the town for this massacre. He had been leading a war party to extend our borders yet again. When he returned, the devastation that greeted him was too much to bear. He and his warriors hunted down every remaining enemy in the borders of our colony, but they were mere stragglers. He sought out the survivors, those that had managed to escape the groups of goblins and orcs that had hunted through the tunnels for them. When he learned of their tale, learned how his wife and children had been caught in those tunnels and viciously murdered, he swore a blood oath to kill every enemy of his race that yet dwelt in the mountains. He swore it specifically at the leader of the horde, a blue-skinned gargantuan beast." Here, Dagg's voice lifts into pride and he looks beyond the ground at his feet. "For fifty years, while my people adapted to life as they could on the plains, he stalked alone through the mountains, a terror to everything that had ever crossed a dwarf, no doubt. He slew uncountable numbers of the beasts, never stopping for rest or replenishment. The only time he returned to his people was the dawn of winter's bite, when he came to share the tales of his adventures. But he never killed that one giant. Eventually, even heroes must die, but in the most cruel twist of fate imaginable, he was not slain in combat but on a frozen peak, too late to escape winter's unforgiving grasp. It is said that his specter still haunts all the giants who dared cast down my clan, and one blue skinned beast that even death cannot stop him from claiming."

From his bedroll Karos listens to the story that Dagg unfurls and responds to his companion afterward, "Now that's a tale to make St. Cuthbert proud. If you ever get a mind to finish the work Galmeen started, let me know and St. Cuthbert's blessing will follow you through your ordeals." Karos rolls over imagining himself squaring off with a giant, he would surely need St. Cuthbert's full blessing to make it out of that situation alive.

Ozzgar the WolfHP: 13/16; AC: 17, touch 14, flat 14

Ozz doesn't even try to sleep. He lays on his bedroll staring at the sky. As Dagg's story unfolds, the goblin sits up and checks the fletching on his arrows, and makes sure their shafts remain straight and unbent. At the dwarf's mention of goblins, Ozz closes his eyes a moment and bows his head.

Once the tale is finished, the ranger clears his throat. "Ah'm soorry soom a mah folk were part o' tha', Dagg. It weren't mah kin, Ah ken tha' fer shore," he says before replacing his arrows to their quivers and laying his bow next to his bedroll. He lies down once more, facing away from the others in order to keep the growing shame from being noticed by the others. "G'night." he calls softly. "If Ah need ta watch wake me, ya ken?"

Dagg

Dagg answers Kaz with a chuckle. "I was with neither. I'm a mere 46 years old. The raid happened 70 years ago. And my people will get revenge.

He replies Ozzgar after a moment of contemplation. "It was not their fault - the clan elders say that they were enslaved by the giants. All the more reason to answer the call for vengeance I suppose."
