I'm driving to GenCon this year with some friends and I need some good tunes for the trip. Recommendations? My particular tastes run towards classic rock, Irish/Scottish/Gaelic folk music, and stupid pop songs.

If you want a good mix of Folk/Celtic/Pop, check out Great Big Sea. They're an atlantic Canadian band which did a lot of traditional maritime music (roots in Irish folk), and put pop/rock twists on the genre (or just played straight pop/rock music with traditional instrumentation). They've been one of my favourite bands since I discovered them in the 90s. Unfortunately they're now disbanded, but they were active for 20 years, and the lead singer Alan Doyle still releases new music and tours with a new band.

Also, since many of their songs have their roots in sailing shanties, they make very good travelling music.

They're a lot of fun. It's disappointing I won't be able to see them live again.

Classic rock with folk?

Go JETHRO TULL - nearly unlimited great choices; especially Locomotive Breath for rock and most anything from Songs from the Wood or Heavy Horses albums for folk. :smallcool:

Seconded; GBS is an absolutely fantastic group with an absolute ton of music that I can't recommend enough.

For Irish folk-rock with some pop-sensibilities, I'd recommend, well, pretty much anything, by The Saw Doctors.

I'd suggest the soundtrack to any videogame you like. Here are my favorites*:

-Link to the Past
-Ocarina of Time
-Majora's Mask
-Chrono Trigger
-Any Final Fantasy
-Super Mario RPG
-Donkey Kong Country II

*Favorites in turn of soundtrack, not just favorite in turns of favorite game. Though I do like these.

A lot of their songs are also on Pandora, so you can just set it and forget it, mostly.

Although if it works reverse of stuff that leads TO them (back in the day I had a Jonathan Coulton radio that frequently played Great Big Sea, Cake, and tenacious D) you might get some unexpected Weird Al thrown in. Not that that's a PROBLEM, in my opinion.

Pandora in general is kind of the solution to your problem to be honest.

If you dont have an aversion to metal I recommend Eluveitie, a swedish folk metal band that focuses on Celtic/Gaelic folk music.

My Uncle got the Songs from The Wood album and it is a great choice indeed. We've just came back from 4+ hours back and forth drive to his buddy who needed help on his boat and installation of new brake kit and g2 axle & gear (http://4wheelonline.com/g2-axle-gear.268) on his truck. My uncle played the album and we enjoyed it along with good chat.

Frank Turner sounds right up your alley. Most of his music can be described as a mix of folk and rock and roll with definite influences from punk.

Thin Lizzy can also be good, they were an Irish classic rock band. Did an awesome version of Whiskey in the Jar.

Agreed, Tull is an awesome band. My late father turned me on to them in my early teenage years. Though not folk Bruce Springsteen is pure rock that’s great for road trips, especially the albums Born to Run and Darkness on the Edge of Town.

Fear not! If you like folk get the Seeger Sessions where Springsteen sings pure folk such as "Erie Canal" and "Buffalo Gals". Plus, he wrote many original songs that will be considered folk in a generation or two like "41 Shots" and "Working Life".

Bruuuuuuuce!

I think the entire Nebraska album could be considered folk in a decade or two as well. That had some heart wrenching songs on it. Reminded me of Bob Dylan and Pete Seeger.
