Personally, I love Wu Jen. I like the flavor and their spell list and basically their abilities. I think they work great as a blend of the natural and mystical for elves, thus they are favored class for elves, IMC. However, I've altered them somewhat in my world/campaigns.

Here's my alterations:

Add Survival to class skill list.
Bonus Languages: Choose Giant, Draconic or Sylvan.
Spell Secret: Choose a number of spells equal to one-half the character’s Intelligence modifier (round down) to alter with the spell secret. You may alter the same spell with multiple spell secrets.
Taboos: A wu jen may choose to take a taboo in conjunction with Spell Secret, expanding the metamagic feats available to include the following (at the cost of two and three spells, respectively): empower spell and widen spell. If a wu jen violates one of these taboos, she cannot cast any more spells that day. A list of Taboos is forthcoming...

Questions? Comments? Snide remarks? :smallcool:

I'd posted this in another Wu Jen thread, but it had devolved into a debate between eastern and western clerics...

This will be the list of Taboos from which wu jen may choose.

These alterations are pretty minor... I don't see anything all to special about them. I don't see how you value Widen over Empower spell though... and I thought Widen could already be affected by spell secret. Still, the change in the number of spell secrets is a good one. But the Taboos should still be obligatory. Other than that, not much to comment on.

I fail to see a reason for the changes. Wu Jen are overpowered, but fine as they are. :smallannoyed:

Maryring: I used the spell-level modifier for the metamagic feats as the basis of the valuation for Empower and Widen. Spell Secrets originally applied only Enlarge, Extend, Silent and Still. Taboos are optional and are taken ONLY if the character wishes to take Empower or Widen.

Kaelaroth: Please explain how Wu Jen are overpowered compared to Specialist Wizards?

I always envisioned the Wu Jen as a little bit elementalist, a little bit Yamahoshi. I would indeed play this alteration, as I think that Survival is almost necessary for the Wu Jen class. I might ask for a bit harsher restrictions on taboos, but as a player I'd be happy to have a choice not to take one unless I was going for one of the more advantageous spell secrets.

The taboos I'm working on are a bit more severe than the simple ones listed in Complete Arcane, mostly I'm adding a couple of similarly-themed taboos together.

For instance,
Cannot eat meat or touch the dead body of a once living creature. This does not include attacks directed at animated undead, but once the undead is dealt with, the wu jen must have no further physical contact.

I'm thinking something along the lines of the Sacred Vows from BoED. Not necessarily as hefty, but along those lines.
