Working on an Elementalist base class and need some ideas to help complete a Class Ability aimed at around 11th level or so:


Replicate Spell (Ex?)
An Elementalist who observes a spell with an elemental descriptor (acid, air, cold, earth, electricity, fire, sonic, or water) not currently known to them and cast within 30 ft may make a spellcraft check (DC 20 + spell level+ caster level). Upon a success, you store that spell in your mind. If the spell’s level is equal to or less than those currently available to you, it may be cast in the following round.

If the spell level is a higher level than currently available, xxxxxxxxxx

Suffering from a mental block on this. Apologies if this has already been written up elsewhere.

Just as an aside, and to avoid some possible concerns, the rough draft of the class grants Eschew Materials (https://www.d20pfsrd.com/feats/general-feats/eschew-materials/) as a Bonus Feat at a previous level (no need for minor material components). Components over 1 GP may still need to be addressed in the description of this ability, although I haven't dug into the spells to see how much of a problem this might be.

Also under consideration is scaling the ability by level,i.e. 1/day at ~11th level plus once more per X levels above that.

Replicate Spell (Ex)
At 11th level an Elementalist who observes a previously unknown spell with an elemental descriptor (acid, air, cold, earth, electricity, fire, sonic, or water) cast within 10 ft. per level may make a Spellcraft check as a Swift action (DC 10+spell level+caster level). If successful, you temporarily store that spell in your mind. If the spell’s level is equal to or less than the level currently available to you, it may be cast in the following round with all variables calculated as if you had cast it. If the spell level is a higher level than you currently have available, but no more than twice your normally allowed spell level, you can spend double the normal casting time to cast it, but another Spellcraft check is required to succeed (DC 20 + spell level) and all variables are calculated at the minimum level needed to cast the spell. Spells more than twice the level normally available to the Elementalist cannot be copied with this ability. Spells must be cast within the time allowed or they are lost. Spells cast using this ability do not count toward the normal daily allotment of spells. This ability may be used one additional time per day for every 3 levels above 11 (2 at 14, 3 at 17, 4 at 20).
