Higurashi no naku koro ni (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NvE8XO6YH6o)

Also, look at the music video

Eiko Shimamiya (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MmhZ6FYoNEs)

Anyone got one?

Paranoia Agent (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rooJnHesxPQ&mode=related&search=) deserves a spot in this thread.

I'd say Lilium from Elfen Lied, no contest. That tune is the only good thing about the show, mind, and as a bitterly ironic piece... well, just allow me to point out that it begins with a tolling bell.

Curses! I was going to mention Elfen Lied too (http://youtube.com/watch?v=R3nq4u2ojdA - mild nudity warning!). It's not as creepy as the previous examples, but still disturbing in some ways - especially those androgynous blue figures that do not appear in the actual story.

I think this one (http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=ybMw6S68CPc) has a better translation.

This might actually be the translation I was seeing. Which reminds me that the version I had was actually two-in-one, a sub and a dub (which you could change with one click) - and the dub was default. I forgot to change it to the sub at least twice - and since I'm allergic to dubs (with some very rare exceptions), I felt like an arachnophobe who just noticed a huge tarantula climbing up his leg.

I didn't actually dislike Elfen Lied. It was nothing great and tried very hard to be deep, and failed at it, but I don't consider my time watching it wasted. Maybe I like fanservice and gore.

Elfen Lied is a very good series in my opinion. Some of the best plotting and character developement with genuinely funny humour.

I wouldn't call the nudity fanservice, it isn't done that eroticaly, the gore probably qualifies though.

The opining is not that creepy though. For me the only creepy thing about that opening is when I see the painting its based off.

I would call this the creepiest opening ever: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SIF5BLyh3Mk

For runners up: Tsukihime, Paranoia agent, Azumanga Daioh... I'm sure I'm forgetting quite a few.

Well, wikipedia lists ecchi among Elfen Lied's genres. Though, to be honest, according to wikipedia Evangelion is a shonen series.

I'm going to have to give Paranoia Agent a stab. That is one great disturbing intro.

Although most people would define shounen as "like DBZ" it really is everything targeted at 12-16 year old boys.

Except that I'm not really sure if this is the good demography for Evangelion. 16 - maybe. 12? Hell no.

Especially the movie. For someone with a weaker psyche it'd be scarring.

Seinen the next highest demographic is 18-30, which doesn't fit Eva either.

Wikipedia has Speed Grapher as shonen as well, which despite being a monster of the week show is about corrupt government officials and has people being sold into prostitution.

True. It's strange that there's no category for 16-18 - maybe people at this age in Japan are too busy with school to watch TV? I'd guess that the best idea is to treat those demographics as guidelines - it's not that you'll spontaneously combust in shame when you're discovered to be watching Bleach at the age of 21 (like me).

Yup, just what I meant - Wikipedia is your best friend, and just like a friend sometimes it doesn't know things, is making stuff up or lying to you.

The beginning of Eva, through the first several episodes, fits into the high end of the "shounen" demographic. As the darker, more adult themes came to the forefront, it moved into "seinen" territory - this corresponded with a move to a much later timeslot in Japan, since the kids didn't get any of it, but the 18-30 otaku watching the Japanese equivalent of Adult Swim just ate it up.

I get most of this information from Wikipedia and TVTropes though, so I'm probably wrong.

Also, Eva's intro is pretty creepy when you know what's going on, in spite/because of the upbeat music, but it's far from the creepiest, to be sure.

That's not creepy. The show can be creepy and the intro is just random scenes from the show, but faux Japanese hip-hop* isn't creepy.

*actually has no idea what genre that song is

This is mostly correct. And, knowing that I might just show myself as someone who doesn't appreciate true art, I must say that those initial, more light-hearted episodes are more to my liking.

By the way, while Evangelion's intro is not creepy, this (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6nsFsgG0ejc) is.

Feh. The crossover intro your avatar's from is far more frightening.

But the link I posted IS to this crossover intro. How can something be more frightening than itself? I sense a paradox here...

You sure that link was correct before? Did I just get a really weird redirect from YouTube that pointed me to a different video?

Anyway, in answer to your question: I don't know, but Hideaki Anno thinks he does.

Seems that youtube gave you a strange redirect (what did it give you, anyway?) - I have not edited my post, the link's destination was constant.

While the intro to this show is pretty normal--as far as anime comes to normal--the ending to Welcome to the N.H.K. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ikFGCQJbHoM) is creepy as hell.

Read the translated lyrics for more weirdness.
