Dispel Magic (Int)

Check

The DC depends on the magic you are attempting to dispel and the effect depends on what level spell slot you expend.

When dispelling an item, treat the effective spell level as 1 + 1 per 2 caster levels above 1st of the item, then add 1 to the effective spell level for every 7 increments of the CR of the user (minimum 1).

Users may have items that can dispel magic may also treat their effective spell level when dispelling as 1 + 1 per 2 caster levels above 1st of the item, then add 1 to the effective spell level for every 7 increments of the CR of the user (minimum 1).

For every level of the spell slot you use below the level (or effective level) of the spell slot for the magic you are attempting to dispel, you take a -5 penalty on this check. For every level of the spell slot you use above the level (or effective level) of the spell slot for the magic you are attempting to dispel, you get a +1 bonus on this check.

Note: Adjusting the bonus and penalty amounts can affect how prevalent or sparse magic is in usage. Higher penalties are favorable for magic and vice versa. Higher bonuses are unfavorable for magic (though generally for lower level users against higher level users) and vice versa.

Lesser Dispel Magic

If you expend a spell slot of 2nd level or lower, you may dispel magic as per the spell except that their is no caster level limit. The result of your caster level check is equal to the result of the check.

Dispel Magic

If you expend a spell slot of 3rd, 4th, or 5th level, you may dispel magic as per the spell and if the magic would require a particular effect to dispel, you have a 50% chance to potentially affect that magic as though you had used the appropriate magic as long as the spell required is of level equal to or less than the spell slot you expended for your dispel magic check.

Greater Dispel Magic

If you expend a spell slot of 6th, 7th, or 8th level, you may dispel magic as per the spell and if the magic would require a particular effect to dispel, you have a 70% chance to potentially affect that magic as though you had used the appropriate magic as long as the spell required is of level equal to or less than the spell slot you expended for your dispel magic check.

Disjunction

If you expend a spell slot of 9th level, you may dispel magic as per the spell and if the magic would require a particular effect to dispel, you have a 90% chance to potentially affect that magic as though you had used the appropriate magic as long as the spell required is of level equal to or less than the spell slot you expended for your dispel magic check. This usage may also automatically function as mage's disjunction if desired in terms of what it can affect (regardless of the 90% chance), though the disjunction will still not successfully dispel potential targets without the appropriate dispel magic check (or checks) and check (or checks) to beat spell resistance.

Boost Dispel Magic

A character with spell slots from a class that do not reach 9th level by class level 20th may use this option to increase their effective spell slot expenditure. The DC for this check is at least 10 + 3 per level of the slot expended. If the result is successful, the level of the spell slot expended is treated as being double what it would ordinarily be (a 1st level spell slot is treated as a 2nd level slot, a 2nd level slot is treated as a 4th level slot, etc.) up to a maximum of an effective spell slot of 8th level.

Action

Using the Dispel Magic skill requires a standard action and the expenditure of an unexpended spell slot.

Try Again

Varies. Depending on the magic you are attempting to dispel, the effect may have ended or not. If being used as countermagic, if the spell is ongoing it can potentially be dispelled later, but if it was instantaneous it is unlikely.

Special

A character with caster levels may choose to substitute their caster level in place of ranks for dispel magic checks.

Monsters with dispel magic as a spell like ability may choose to use boost dispel magic using their caster level for that spell like ability or skill ranks in Dispel Magic if they have ranks in this skill.

If the target is an item and its user has spell resistance, a spell and the recipient has spell resistance, or a summon (that could be dispelled) with spell resistance, you must overcome that spell resistance with a caster level check before you can affect the item, spell, or summon. Once spell resistance has been overcome, it does not apply again in that round against your dispel magic checks.

An item that grants spell resistance uses the greater of the spell resistance it normally grants or 10 + CR of the user against dispel magic checks (the item protects itself with this spell resistance as well).

Synergy

Use magic device can be used to emulate spell resistance for the one making the use magic device check (this only works for their items and spells cast from those items affecting them, though others will need their own spell resistance if the spell affects multiple targets) equal to the result of the use magic device check for a number of rounds equal to the users charisma modifier.

Use magic device can be used in place of dispel magic checks for magic items that dispel magic.

++If you have 5 or more ranks in Dispel Magic, you get a +2 bonus on Use Magic Device checks to when using items that dispel magic.
++If you have 5 or more ranks in Spellcraft, you get a +2 bonus on Dispel Magic checks.
++If you have 5 or more ranks in Use Magic Device, you get a +2 bonus on Dispel Magic checks to when using items that dispel magic.

Delicious Copypasta:

So, I was thinking about how there are multiple balance points in 3.5 and how spells are really powerful. There's probably over 9000 magic fixes out there. I figured I'd see about making dispel magic more available.

The objectives (loosely) are to make magic a bit riskier, but not items as much (so as not to hurt mundanes who need a magic item Christmas tree). Also, to make it possible to interact with it in a few ways instead of just the one way (UMD, spell resistance, lower level can use the check more than their level, maybe other stuff).

It's just an attempt, feel free to use it, change it, or whatever works.
