EDIT: This is an old post and, as such, it is against the forum rules to respond to it. If you have comments, then please PM me, or start a new thread with a link in it to this one.

Probably ready in all details (except of course CRs and LA which can really only be proven by playtesting). For other possible changes maybe needs more spell-like abilities and the Spell Resistance MIGHT still need some tweaking. Fluff probably almost fully present (although many things about fluff might end up being changed as I get suggestions and further consider it).

(1) Note that they fly at the average speed for a dragon of their age category, considering only the 5 basic chromatic, and 5 basic metallic dragons (all other species were deemed much too weird to be taken into account by the commity of druids that designed them). Their maneuverability varies between the upper and lower limits given, and within that constraint is equal to the maneuverability of the least maneuverable flying creature they believe can see them.
(2) Beige dragons follow all the normal rules for dragon spellcasting, except as for the following (EXTENSIVE!) changes:
-Their caster level for their natural spell abilities is equal to their hitdice - 13.
-They cast spells as Adepts (and must prepare them) rather than Sorcerers (the individuality of having specific personal spells that they can bring forth from their souls would go against their nature), including the use of Wisdom instead of Charisma to set the DCs etc.
-Note that their innate spell casting abilities still do not allow them to summon a familiar.
-Until they reach caster level 40 they may not take Epic Item Creation feats, the Improved Spell Capacity epic feat(Even as a bonus feat), the Improved Metamagic epic feat, nor may they cast Epic spells.
-They gain the Improved Spell Capicity epic feat as a bonus feat once for every 3 levels their caster level exceeds 39 rather than 20.
-Use the table below for spells per day for beige dragons (it diverges from the standard Adept spells per day table at caster level 20) and use the modified spells allowed in below lists:

Beige Dragon Base Spells per day(not counting bonuses for high Wisdom)

Designed by a committee of crotchety old Neutral Neutral (Square) Druids who were tired of weird stuff and always having to keep track of YET ONE MORE bizarre creature they petitioned Nature to create for them a creature mighty yet sedate and uninteresting to fill the ecological niche of mighty, territorial creature near them so that all creatures who would cause disruption to the druids routines would be displaced out of the ecosystem in the area. Nature loves wondrous variety and so it did not grant their request initially, but eventually it gave in just to get them to stop kvetching at it. Of course some would say Nature got the last laugh since Beige dragons in their mediocracy, "peace and quiet", and boredom centered abilities actually end up being exceptions to many of the common rules about dragon-kind.
Native to where-ever they can find tranquility, beige dragons are creatures of habit in the extreme. They embody all that is so standard that nobody even thinks about it. However they are not lawful, as they lack the discipline for self-improvement and will quietly ignore any rules or laws that might threaten to disrupt their set routines provided they think they can get away with it without anybody making too much of a fuss about the matter. They have a great deal of prudence, common sense, and intuitive understanding, but they mostly use it to head off or avoid any excitement of any sort that might come their way long before it can materialize. A few of them are more proactive about this, and it is not uncommon for them to actively (but not TOO actively) put forth effort to make the lives of those in their territory more mundane and uneventful, squashing any sort of excitement or change regardless of its nature.
There are two theories as to beige dragon coloration. The first is that all beige dragons are exactly the same shade and they never change color in the slightest as they age. The other is that beige dragons will VERY gradually (over the course of decades at the quickest) change color to assume whatever shade of beige is considered the most drab in their location. Research into this matter is complicated by beige dragons' tendency to use illusion spells to fit in better, and the risk of death from sheer boredom for any sage attempting to investigate the matter.
Beige Dragons give off a smell that exactly matches that of their environment at that moment, except much stronger. This combination of factors balances out to make them neither harder nor easier to detect or track by scent than any other dragon.
As a defensive measure many beige dragons will give regularly scheduled tours of their collections (AKA hoards) so as to demonstrate the paucity of their possessions compared to the threat they can present in battle (especially compared to other dragons). They also enjoy this opportunity to drone on at great length about familiar things, using the same memorized patter delivered in a monotone on each and every tour. They take it as a point of pride if each member of a tour group falls asleep at least once during the tour.
Religion: Beige dragons are dedicated, if not fanatical worshipers. Which is to say they are reliable in their meeting the forms and requirements of their religion and often set aside a specific period of time each day in their unchanging routines to pray, but they are not very likely to go on quests or the like. Favored Dieties include: Chronepsis, Diabolus (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?t=55828 ), Boccob, and a certain god whose portfolio includes apathy who can be found here (http://www.rmcomics.com/).
Beige dragons prefer bland food and often raise oats (to make oatmeal), soy beans (to make tofu), and potatoes which they prefer boiled. However in the name of simplicity they will even eat trees, meat, or even (under extreme circumstances) honey or truffles if such are easier to obtain. Their bodies are perfectly capable of surviving on just as great a range of fare as any other dragon.
Many knit, using their own fore-claws, the resulting garments tend to be warm but very itchy. Beige dragons love to give them as gifts. Some of them (especially in colder climates)actually wear enough of their own creations that they count as wearing padded armor.
Oren Otter (Pastor of The Christian Furry Fellowship (http://www.taur.net/~ottercomics/monastery/cff.shtml)) has this suggestion (applicable to the rare Neutral Evil Square aligned individuals, or even more rarely to Neutral Good Square aligned individuals who, of course, only go after Evil executives): Where they are available, beige dragons gather donuts. Not for themselves, but for their favorite prey, executives. Using the donuts as bait, the beige dragon lures the executive into a meeting where the dragon then bores the executive to death with an informational presentation.

Combat
Beige Dragons LOATH combat, fighting only when there is no other way out of a situation or when they beleive that a little excitement now will stave off much more interesting events later. They usually prefer to lead off combat with their Mundane Aura causing attackers to mellow out. They have been known to ignore attackers who resist their Aura, standing almost totally still (they will shuffle around enough or ambel semi-randomly such that they don't count as flat-footed) in favor of not breaking their Mundane Presence on others. They then use their breath weapon (using there racial bonus to Bluff checks to give the impression that they are merely yawning) to stupify whichever attacker looks to be the most interesting or unusual. On a successful bluff check against a creature under any sort of Calm Emotions or similar effect (including their Mundane Presence) or that does not detect them the use of the breath weapon does not break said effect or otherwise qualify as an aggressive action (for instance for purposes of breaking Invisibility). They will usually use their Mediocrity abilities to their fullest strength unless it is clear to them that this will work against their favor. If their Mundane Presence fails they will attempt to use their spells and/or breathweapon to disable enemies. All things being equal they generally avoid the use of their physical attacks, however if that is the most prudent way to proceed they simply resign themselves to having to get a little messy. If victorious they will generally strip their attackers of anything of interest and destroy it. If possible they will further drain opponents with their breath weapon to leave them as uninteresting as possible. In extreme cases they may transport fallen foes to some especially out of the way, unimportant, and drab location far from their lair and leave them there. In any case they have no compunctions about killing if it would save them noticeable trouble in the long-run.

Breath Weapon(Su): Line of Pure Elemental Ennui: Drains Intelligence and Charisma (roll separately for each), Will save D.C. is Wisdom based. A successful save halves the amount of the reduction of each stat(round down, even to zero), and converts it from ability drain to ability damage. In any case any amount of ability drain that would reduce a stat to zero has just enough of that type (or types if it would do both) of drain converted to damage to leave the victim(s) DRAINED to 1 and DAMAGED by the rest. (Ann Vole sez: ex-hail...(it cancels any call to action)) This breath weapon is invisible, it looks like they are just having a really good yawn when they use it. Note that despite this, the dragon's crush attack and other things that reference the D.C. of the breath weapon are still calculated based on Constitution NOT Wisdom. Draining abilities does NOT grant the beige dragon temporary hit-points.

Dull Mind(Ex): Any other race that communicates with a beige dragon telepathically or sucessfully reading its mind must each treated as if struck by its breath weapon each round. This in no way disrupts the communication or effect.

Mundane Presence(Su): A juvenile or older beige dragon can bore foes (and friends, and everyone else) with its mere presence. The ability takes effect automatically whenever the dragon sleeps, knits, stands still, stares into space, paces, reads (silently), cooks bland food, or performs any other boring (to observe) activity. Creatures within a radius of 30 feet × the dragon’s age category are subject to the effect if they have fewer HD than the dragon. A potentially affected creature that succeeds on a Will save (DC 10 + ½ dragon’s HD + dragon’s Wis (change to Cha???) modifier) remains immune to that dragon’s mundane presence for 24 hours. On a failure, creatures with 4 or less HD are effected as if by a Calm Emotions spell and are exhausted for 4d6 rounds and those with 5 or more HD become are effected as if by a Calm Emotions spell for 4d6 rounds. Dragons ignore the mundane presence of Beige dragons.

Mediocrity (Su): Beige dragons of Young or older age category are so practiced in their devotion to mediocrity that they may take 10 on any d20 roll regardless of stress, distractions, or risk. This includes saving throws they are attempting and their to-hit rolls. This requires no action in and of itself since it is included as part of any action it affects.

Improved Mediocrity (Su): Beige dragons of Adult or older age category have honed their mediocrity through constant practice. They may take the average on any die roll they make (round down). For instance for damage they deal or the randomly determined factors of any spells they cast (note that this does not apply to saving throws since the TARGET rolls those). This requires no action in and of itself since it is included as part of any action it affects.

Aura of Mediocrity(Su): The power of Mediocrity within a Beige Dragon of Ancient status or older is so powerful that it can warp the very fabric of the universe near it. The aura extends 20 ft per age category around the dragon and causes all actions requiring d20 rolls to occur as if a 10 had been rolled. Note that, among other things this will generally prevent critical hits in combat. Upon entering this aura a creature may make a Will save a DC 10 + ½ dragon’s HD + dragon’s Wis modifier (which is the same as the ACTUAL (Wisdom base) DC of the Beige Dragon's breath weapon) to resist (this roll may NOT be affected itself by the Aura of Mediocrity). The same save is used for the next 24 hours, do not roll again until this period of time has passed since the last such save actually ROLLED (regardless of whether it was made or failed). However the effects will discontinue or resume if the creature leaves or re-enters the range of the Aura. This is NOT a mind influencing affect, and the save may be voluntarily failed as usual. It may negate or resume this aura once per turn as a free action.

Improved Aura of Mediocrity(Su): Upon achieving Great Wyrm status a Beige Dragon is empowered as an avatar of Mediocrity and it may force all affected by its Aura of Mediocrity to also act as if affected by Improved Mediocrity whenever they are within range of the Aura.

Spell-Like Abilities:3/day - Slow, 2/day - Feeblemind, 1/day - Mindblank, Temporal Stasis

Skills:
Profession and Craft skills of boring nature are considered class skills. Spellcraft is much too interesting for beige dragons to take an interest in it... it counts as a cross-class skill for them. The following are the class skills for beige dragons: Concentration, Craft[Any boring, definitely not Alchemy, Armourer, Weaponsmithing, or Bow-Making/Fletching], Listen, Knowledge[Any, except especially interesting subjects], Profession[Any mundane and boring], Search, Sense Motive, Spot. Beige dragons receive a racial bonus equal to their hit-dice to Bluff checks provided the lie they are telling is less interesting than the truth, and Diplomacy checks to remain "socially invisible" (including making small-talk, avoiding faux-pas, etc).
Favored Professions include: Accounting, fishing (with a rod), and farming. Favored Crafting skills include knitting, basket weaving, and cross-stitch. Many have ranks in Knowledge[History] with a DE-emphasis on any time and place where any works of art currently popular were produced, any battle was fought, or anything else that wouldn't bore the average student to tears occurred.

Feats:
All beige dragons have one feat, plus additional feats based on Hit Dice just like any other creature. Beige dragons favor Alertness, Great Fortitude, Iron Will, and Skill-Focus (especially for Concentration, and Craft and Profession skills).

Looking forward to the final product! :smallwink:

shouldn't this have a bit more fluff

Regarding "more fluff": It will... it will... I just wanted to see if anyone was actually interested in reading the idea, and if Rich was going to pounce me for copyright violation or some such (in which case I would have to change the name and some of the fluff). People seem interested enough based on the number of responses I am getting so far (given the amount of time that has passed), so for now, all systems are go.

Edit: Slightly more fluff, and more crunch added. Much more of both still to come , of course.

Fluff added along with complete spell progression and spell list (based more or less on the Adept). Some of the restrictions and comments on the spell list are meant to be entertaining, so be sure to check them out.

I suppose it's totally impossible that there would ever be a beige half-dragon template, seeing as how that's much too interesting, but perhaps a few select races could be combined, assuming they're boring enough?

Hey, in a culture where "everyone" sleeps around or "all" the mighty have harems, I could definitely see half-beige's around... might even do a chimera mod...
Thanks for the suggestion, don't know how I missed that one.

On other subjects:
-What do people think good spell-like abilities to add would be?
-I know it is long, but what do people think about the spell-casting progression and spell list? Both from a balance perspective and a feel perspective? (will edit in or do a separate post with my rationale for the spell selection... later.)

I literally spend five min, staring at the screen in disbelieve after seeing this, dear god this is so awesome, i love the fluff, it is so,..........................less than gratifying it is amazing. Shocking, i beg of you to join the church of link's hat, for you uninteresting genius is greatly needed for dull uninteresting tasks. I love that it's natural defense is taking vistors on extremly uninteresting and boring tours. God i love it, Five stars for fluff along

How are you going to rationalize the encounter? Make the dragon an active kill-joy who must be stopped? Or are you going to rationalize it at all?

What level and mix is the party? What age catagory/hit-dice do you intend to use? I look forward to any accounts of the battle that will help me get the CR's set better.

They'll probably be in its den for an unrelated task, and run into it as they're trying to make their escape.

Probably Young Adult or Juvenile, although it won't be for a little while. If they die, I'll know it was too tough!

"Brave adventures, we need you to preform a dangerous task for the greater good. All of the evil monsters in the land are no longer acting barbaric. Just last week, the evil orc hoard instead of fighting us went into insurance and are bank robbing us for millions. Somehow, something out there is so boring, that even the orcs will work desk jobs in order to avoid having its job. Their is a beige dragon that is in charge of a economic takeover, and it is going to buy all our stock (the harper's stock that is) if you don't stop it. Then, FR will become extremly boring

I really like the half beige dragon template. I can just imagine placing a half beige dragon human curator in some museum or other that the party is trying to rob. "Nonono, you can't rob the museum. That's far too exciting. Stop that nonsense and look at this lovely piece of art with me."

Note: Most ability drain/damage sources, when you successfully save, convert the ability damage to ability drain. Damage is stacking, but drain is not. As is, theres no point in making your safe if you know you'll survive the blast.

My suggestion is to follow the example and convert the breath weapon to deal ability damage naturally, while a successful save converts it to ability drain.

DracoDei

Oh? I thought the only difference was that drain doesn't go away naturally (and the level of the spell it takes to get rid of it) and damage goes away at the rate of 1 per day for each ability(or 2 per day with complete bed-rest)... I thought everything stacked with everything on that score...
Are you sure? I see nothing here (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/specialAbilities.htm#abilityScoreLoss) to collaborate that.

I can imagine a town's whole adminastrative system under the control of a Beige dragon or half dragon....

I realize now that Beige Dragon cast spells like Adepts based on Wisdom and not Intelligence. Doh! Anyhow, I really like this.

I think the conventional wisdom is that some of them already work at the real-life DMV (Department of Motor Vehicles)...

I love this dragon so much, seriously. Good job on it. Now to make some half-dragon half-gynosphinx monsters to... bore... the PCs.

Good job on it. Now to make some half-dragon half-gynosphinx monsters to... bore... the PCs.

It just occurred to me that those should perhaps (depending on how much anachronism you are willing to introduce... and, face it, any campaign that includes beige dragons is already pretty silly...) give standardized tests instead of asking riddles.
"Now did everyone bring your #2 pencils?"
"No peeking, and after the test is done please remain in your seats until I have graded the exams and devoured anyone who has scored less than a 90."

What is harper's stock? (this has been bugging me)

This could be such a cool Dilbert sort of monster.
Although belated, I must acknowledge that they WOULD fit right into that setting yes. Good thinking.

Does immunity to frightful presence grant immunity to a mundane presence?

DracoDei
2007-10-22, 12:03 AM
Depends how specific it is...
A general immunity to fear effects wouldn't help (even if it lists Frightful Presence in its description as an example).
Something that is specifically canceling out/countering DRACONIC frightful Presence in PREFERENCE to fear effects in general would have similar benefits against mundane presence. Note that I specifically stated in the description that dragons are immune to mundane presence if that is what you are asking.

Edit (Oct. 22 7:40 AM eastern): Just realized that the Wyrmling (or at the least the Very Young) version of these qualifies as an even cheesier way of dispensing with the Tarrasque than Allips... and they would have the perfect motivation to do it too!

Actually, I was thinking of the Dragon Shaman, who gets immunity specifically to Frightful Presence. So yes, then.

Make sure you plan out in advance under what conditions the Beige will consider it prudent to stop ambling and "yawning" and actually start fighting (if only by opening range and being more obvious about the BW uses). Of course all of this assumes that it is Young Adult or you have it take the "Awaken Mundane Presence" Feat (I am sure you can figure out how it would work if you have access to Draconomicon)...

Beige Dragons give off a smell that exactly matches that of their environment at that moment, except much stronger.

Found an item on a "1001 Silly Magic Items" thread on the Wizards boards that would probably be very useful when fighting a beige dragon...
Probably gives immunity to Mundane Presence, the breath weapon, and the Dull Mind special ability.

See here. (http://forums.gleemax.com/showpost.php?p=5672921&postcount=26)

Well, we now have line art of one artists conception of what a Beige dragon might look like. Didn't scan well and a bit too bipedal for the traditional D&D image, but excellent none-the-less.

I will edit this with the color version when that becomes availible.
