Thordrek plods back to the child in his ill fitting clothes.

Lad, we need you yo tell us anything you know about the aurilites if we're to defeat them. What do you know about their numbers, their leadership, their strongholds? Do they have many other prisoners such as yourself? Who was keeping you in that tower?

He speaks in a soft tone, but seems determined to get the information.

Then, we have to decide what to do with you.

"Do with me? What are you going to do with me?" the boys asks, looking scared. He looks around fearfully again, but Hjalmar's presence seems to calm him.

"I'm Dagnar, son of Dwain of Hundlestone. You can call me Dagnar Dwainsonn if ye wish. I took my schooling and learned my letters at Berronar's chapel, so my father has me help him with letters and figuring. I just write what he says, on account of he sees so poorly. We're drovers. Carts and caravans up the Icewind Pass" the boy says, pride welling in him for a moment.

"The elders of Hundlestone came one day with their soldiers. Said my name was drawn in a lottery and I was to be given to the Auriltes so they left the town alone. Between those given and other slaves, must be near on a hundred of us. Keep to the mines we do. When their leader learned I had no skills but the quill and parchment, he took me and now I take his letters. He treats me well enough and only beats me when he is real mad.

His name is Horvrath of the Chill Winds. Says he was part dragon. He's older though, but not too old if ye know. He had a guard too, always with him. It's mask is always closed but it stands 7 or 8 feet tall. Never spoke while i'm around"

"Frak..." Buna remarks quietly. Carmard nods in silent reply to her.

Nega Silverhammer

When she hears the giving of children to the Aurilites to leave Huddlestone alone she Cries out By Berronar. She composes herself but a low grumbling is heard and she curses under her beard. She thinks to herself:By da time I am done wit(h) da leaders of dat place em will stand in front of Berronars justice. She listens eagerly to the rest of his story.

"Really, Nega?" Buna says, as she walks within hearing range. She shakes her head. "Considering that if they didn't, the whole town prolly would've been either razed by dragons or them all carried off in slavery or worse, a tribute's a grim but lesser sin" she tells Nega.

"I'm sorry for it, but what are they supposed to do, eh? If anything, we were supposed to be protectin' Hundlestone from things like dis. Don't be surprised if some o'us, like Buelyir, Glorian or the Patriarch even knew. Least we're doin' something now. Too far for us 'fore, lest ye wanted us to go wage a war against the Aurilites in their mountains over this" Buna frowns and shrugs.

"Bloody paladins. When we get home, why don't ye take yer whole Order out and do that?" Buna frowns and walks away, upset and not willing to hear more.

Carmard looks between Nega and Buna, than shrugs simply.

"Horvrath's known as one o'the main clerics of Auril in the area. We've no idea what the warrior is. Just that it's known as The Warrior. It's some kind of hunter. It's been spotted roaming the mountains, hunting animals and humanoids alike. We don't know what it is, as no one has ever seen it lift it's visor and live. Never knew one to be in the company of the other though. Interest'n news. Bad news, but interest'n." day and never left Horvrath's side"[/COLOR]

"Um..." the boy pauses for a moment. "Several months maybe? He was just... here one day. Never left Horvrath's side since. I don't know what it is. Not that I would. I'm just a boy and a drover's boy at that" he says, seemlingly ashamed in front of such powerful warriors.

"You're Jilker's aren't you? The dwarves of the Patriarch? I was at your Halls once, 2 years ago. Wasn't there too long, but some fat old dwarf with a moustache gave me candy and told me to be a good boy for my father. Seemed nice. Father said he misses the Battlehammers though" he says.

Johannes and Gratch on their own...

The disguised Johannes and his hobgoblin companion Gratch work their way through the old stronghold and towards the main common area of the stronghold. The tight passages are expertly carved to fit dwarf proportions. Several areas appear to be recently reinforced, and with some degree of skill as well. The stone is damp and cold though, which is unusual for this depth but perhaps best explained by the presence of the Aurilites. Clouds of dust still choke the air from the explosions, and when they enter the living quarters with their higher vault ceilings, one of the stone beams had cracked and fallen.

The area looks otherwise empty, with belongings tossed aside and cook pots in corners still simmering, left unattended. It would seem everyone either had went towards the fight, or to shelter. Either way, it suited Johannes just fine. However confident he was in his disguise, he did not want to push his luck with it before he had to.

The pair keep walking through the empty corridors until the enter the large common area and mustering field that is at the center of the stronghold. There, they see what remains of the enemy defenses. Knowing his companions and what the mercenaries and duergar were capable of, he felt confident they had thrown back any initial assault. Seeing the smoke and fires from the other side of an interior wall. Columns of dark black smoke rise up as well from beyond the walls, and Johannes could not help but wonder what pyromaniac had planned the assault. It seemed like Buna’s handiwork, in his mind. The explosions, now that he thought about it, were probably the blast globes that Arum had acquired at one point. If that gnome had unleashed those on formations of the enemy, the enemy losses must have been savage indeed

The Aurilites in the mustering grounds were rapidly building barricades, giant and hobgoblin working hand in hand. A few hulking ogres also wait in the wings. The area is wide, with a high vaulted ceiling that goes up several stories. Several great pillars of granite reach up a hundred feet to support the roof here; all look magnificent and intact. Rings of living quarters and workshops can be seen, and dim lights burn in many of the them. A house overlooking the common grounds was considered the best place in a dwarf hold; it was hard to get a view of anything else in a dwarf hall after all. Rather than forming an organized line, it is much more distributed now and an older frost giant with black armor and snow white hair seems to be barking out orders to everyone. However good his friends and allies were, this could be stiff resistance indeed.

“That’s the lieutenant of the Frost Lord” Gratch says, pointing out the giant as if he was hard to miss. “The Frost Lord himself gone to war against dwarf army, but left him here. He some kind of priest and warrior, and very mean” Gratch says, but does not seem to want to elaborate.

Across the common grounds is a large work area full two large forges and several places for smiths. It reminds Johannes of the home grown forges around the Great Foundry of Sigil, what was left of it anyways, in their haphazard nature. A large pillar of un-worked goes from the ground to the ceiling and makes up the southern wall of the hobgoblin’s foundry. Anchored to that is an interior stone wall that is blocking off an area. Two stone and wood towers stand over a set of gates and wooden platforms allow the few hobgoblins there to look into the blocked off area. A heavy wooden gate, shod with crude iron work is installed in the center of the wall. Torches burn around its perimeter and a handful of hobgoblins can be seen in the towers or on the wall.

“Those be the slave pens, chief. No one really there right now, so guards must have them all herded into mine shaft and shoot any who come out while rest of guards fight. We do not go in to the slave pens. Most have picks and most be dwarfs, who be only ones who last long here, haha. Only the cart goes in there with water and food, and it takes out ore and so on. A few slaves, the big mean human mercenaries that got captured her long time back, we give them special rations and stuff to do, they keep slaves in line” Gratch says as they approach. “The cart is by the foundry with a tarp. We could get in that way maybe? Take them water barrels and fill with weapons? Don’t know, Gratch only tried to stop slaves from running before not help them” he says and shrugs.

As they approach the slave pens and towers, one of the burly guards in the tower takes notice and growls at them.

“What you doing? Get back with the rest. We have them in their hole till fight over. You get back to your group. Go find yer sergeant before I put a bolt through yer arse!”

Plan of Attack

Looking at the rubble of the tower that would be difficult to climb quickly and the still standing gates with their smaller duty doorways, the situation presents two unpleasant options. They could climb over and be exposed to enemy attacks and be slowed themselves without cover or be jammed up going through doors that would also be covered.

Nalrak and Grathalmor stand near Carmard, assuming their normal guard positions as their leader surveys the area and thinks things through before his neutral expression becomes a frown.

“Ye two aren’t going to like this” Carmard finally tells his two guardians. “I’ll have to take to the air and trust in my wards. Throw a few fireballs and get’em on their heels enough for all of ye to move forward. Now fer the next part…”

Carmard waves over Sonnlinor Stonebreaker, who appears to be enjoying a smoke with a metal hewn pipe.

“Sonnlinor, I’m expect’n the worst over that rubble. We can handle the giants or whatnot up there, but I want ye to move up to the crest o’the rubble with yer duergar. Use yer shields and crossbows and try to soften up the giants. They’ll toss boulders or worse at ye, so don’t stay long in one place and don’t stay in groups either. I nay want to advance over and down that mess, and it’ll be trapped now to boot I’m sure. They did give us some nice cover if we use it right. Use yer own spells and whatever else ye got as ye see fit to support us. Oh, and than these…” Carmard pauses and reaches into his satchel. There are paper & wood cans with a wick on the top and a handle on the bottom. “Smoke bombs. Have yer lads throw two in front of each gate to cover us as we come out. Least they won’t be aimin’ right at us”

Carmard wheels again and whistles for Thordek to come over.

“I want ye to go to both gates and knock the hinges off with yer black axe. Whatever’s holding them on, should cut through. Losin’ the element o’ surprise, but they’d have to have brick fer brains to not expect us to do that anyways so no real loss. When the smoke lands, ye go left. Tell Black’s Company to go right and take the minotaur’s with them. I want them to roll up the troopers and ours mainly go fer the giants and leadership. Bundok, Grathalmor and Duervar can keep the riff raff off yer side while ye go fer the big and ugly ones. Buna will join ye and I’ll follow if I can.

Suggest ye pair up, say Hjalmar and you, Magnum and Nalrak and let Nega handle her own business. Arum can chip in as he can with Buna. Tell’em not to charge anything with a lance again, Hjalmar may not be able to save his arse this time”

“We need to wait on Buelyir too” Carmard tells Thordek and anyone else listening. “He used a Sending to tell me he was going to start fires in the flour mill. If there’s a lot o’flour dust and other combustibles there, it should be a pretty mighty when it goes” Carmard smiles slightly. “He’s hoping to draw off some of their forces, but there’s only a few of them so I’m hoping he’s nay biting off more than he can chew. Open up the doors when ye want, but that’ll be our signal to start”

He nods his understanding and waves the 4 dwarves who'll be following him closer for a quick pow-wow and shows them the long range alchemist fire grenades

Right, I found these in the tower before it blew up, I was intending them for Wyatt and Sable but they might be of some use against the giants. I suggest we take two each. As for tactics... I have a few spells left, but not many, after that I'm down to my axe and crossbow. What about you Buna?

Buna frowns slightly at the question from Thordek.

"I've used some of my big stuff, but I recovered a bit of it. Still a couple tricks in me gauntlets though" she smiles. "Why don't we get those duergar with the flame throwers and give them giants a fire bath, what do ye think? Keep the runts off us too, but we'd have to protect'em. I'd say just borrow'em but I'd rahter not wear the things, would you?" she smirks at Thordek.

She leans over and smirks at him again, a little gentler before her hardened face returns.

"As much as ye boys like to fight the giantkin, I'd try to pull'em away from the main fight and plug'em with yer crossbows and such as much as ye can before ye go toe to toe with'em"

Buna turns to Carmard, who is thinking over something again.

"Lets take a few o'those bombs on a rope we found, but give the rest to the duergar to keep folks from runnin' up on them, what do ye think Car?"

Carmard looks over at her and shrugs.

"Ask Thordek, I'm think'n over something"

Flamers would be nice, don't know if the Sollinor would part with them tough... Maybe you could go ask him while I go speak to Black? As for plinking away them with crossbows... Problem is that if we shoot them they throw huge rocks at us, on the other hand if we get up close they can crush you in a blow, apart from magic, in my experience there's really no good way to fight them, only slightly less horrible ones. So, I've got a wand with a spell called animalistic power, makes you stronger, faster, and tougher, not by much but it helps. So if you can use it you're welcome to it, I've also got an enlarge person wand, but making yourself a bigger target might not be the best idea today. Finally, a few shield of faith potions I'll never use. First priority is casters, then giants and leadership. I've got to go talk to Black, meet us at the gate in a minute or so, give me back what you don't use.

He uses the animalistic power wand on himself, then leaves to inform Black and Kerik of the plan.

All right, you two take your groups and go right when I open the gate, you're to break enemy formations, then go help us, Carmard's orders. There's gonna be an explosion at one point, that's our scouts so don't be surprised.

The Alaghor remained alert but reluctant to speak until his next part in this was assigned him directly. He nodded at Carmard once and looked at Nalrak with a confident grin, clearly anticipating battle again, "We'll go ta da left. I'm near outta spells, but fer a good'n I saved fer da last; Divine Power. I've still got a few surprise fer giants yet, an' da wand o'Flame Strike ta use twice."

Shield in hand, Magnum made sure the wand was readily accessible, then stood ready while fingering the hilt of his still sheathed Giantbane axe and surveying the scene ahead.

Arman was having a hard time with his leg the way it was. He hoped that things would happen soon, if anything so that they could leave. The cold water helped somewhat in killing the pain for a while, and he relaxed enough at it being dulled somewhat. He almost didn't it make it across the river still, and was thankful for the help he received to get on shore when he reached it.

The waves of pain were soon back however, and the tension also with it. He didn't talk much to everyone, keeping what energy he had to himself. He knew he was going to need it.

He went over his spells in his mind, hoping that what he had would be enough.

By the River...

With Johanness having left to cause havoc on his own with his hopefully faithful enthralled hobgoblin, the rest of the group waited. Talamir and Arman sat far apart from each other in the darkness and said little. Flint kept checking and rechecking his crossbow. Sable and Wyatt conversed quietly, their own task on hold for now. All of them waited for Buelyir.

The unusual dwarf had a stubby cigar in his mouth and a spyglass to his eye as he looked across the river at the old mill. He muttered to himself as he examined it, figuring out its layout and construction before finally setting the spyglass down on his lap. He set the cigar aside for a drink from his waterskin and seemed satisfied.

"Alright" he announced. "It should be in range of a fireball. I just need to get it through a window. Figure its old and dusty and not cleaned, should be a good one. The Delzoun engineers who designed it put vents going up to the surface for ventilation or in case of a blow out. Shame to do it, it's a fine piece of engineering" he says and shakes his head. "shame we've declined so much we have to blow up our old ruins rather than come back and reclaim'em"

"Least it goes out with a bang, eh?" remarks Flint.

"Um... should we be this close?"

"Well, I guess we be finding out. We go any further and I will nay be able to see it" he smiles a bit madly.

"Crazy enough to work, I think, heh. So a fireball 'den, eh? Well... no time better 'dan the present. Let 'em have it."

Wyatt instinctively backed away slightly to get ready to run and dive behind cover in case things got out of hand. Getting out of dramatic situations like wild pitfalls and large explosions were things he was used to. It was old hat for him.

Just another day on the job.

Thordek and the Mercenaries

Marcus Black looks at Thordek, and the hard bitten mercenary merely shrugs.

"So yer finally gonna let me get my sword wet? Here I thought we were along just to mule out something for ye. Nothin' would surprise me with that dwarf Buelyir" he says and grumbles.

"Yer more than welcome to deal with the giants. You take the wheat, we'll thin out the chaff for ye. Our wizard'll help with that too." he says with a nasty smile, and pats the long greatsword he was running a whetstone over on his lap. It seems to have put a wickedly sharp edge on the end of the blade.

Kerik and Gore stand in ear shot of Thordek. Both glare at the Levtokuld and seemed pleased with their orders. Gore looks weary though, and his armor looks like he had been fighting someone with a can opener and indeed he had been.

They only grunt in acknowledgement and say nothing else. The message had been communicated.

With his task accomplished, Thordek now had to speak to the Sonnlinor about his flame throwers and open the doors with his adamantine axe.

OOC: If you're fighting here, please post what buffs you are going to use in your next post. We'll assume you cast everything right before you go through the door, ok?

Buelyir versus the Mill

Satisfied with what he was going to do, Buelyir reaches for a wand from inside his duster and pulls out the mithril handled sphere with a blazing red gem mounted atop it. He brushes a speck of dust off of the gem and points it at the mill, carefully remembering exactly where he wanted it to go. A moment later, a tiny, blazing sphere flies from the wand and streaks into the darkness, leaving a long, orange trail in the air.

The spell reaches across the river and sneaks through an old stone portal and into the mill where the tiny sphere blossomed inside the dusty old mill. The inside of the milling area erupts in an orange light as the fireball expanded, before the particles of flour and centuries of dust in the area caught and exploded as well...

A rolling boom echoes across the water as the dust ignites and the roof of the structure lifts, and than falls in an avalanche of stone. Twin vent shafts, made of ancient brick and running towards the surface crumble as well. What was left of the gigantic water wheel, made of nearly ageless stone and mithril, crumbles into the water in silence. Now only fires burn inside a portion of the structure and smoke roils out from it, up the vents and into the outside a couple miles above...

"Well" pronounces Buelyir as his hearing is restored. "That was suitably large. Now lets go kill who investigates" he smiles madly at Arman.

Strangie

Wyatt ducks and covers his ears when he realizes how much of a mess this is going to be. He keeps an eye open to watch the explosion itself, though, awed by the size of it and how easily it erupted from just a single spell.

"Well, 'dat's one way to announce your presence, eh?" Wyatt says once the dust settles a bit, standing up straight and lowering his hands. He reaches for his mace, lifting it up into the air in front of him, letting it spin in the air for a moment, before catching it by the grip again. "I like the way you operate, Buelyir. Let's do 'dis, 'den!"

Meanwhile, back with the main party...

The group feels the ground jump beneath their feet, followed by a noticable shake. If their first thought was an earth quake, the sound of the booming explosion confirms otherwise.

"That would be Buelyir, I reckon" Buna notes with a wicked smile. "Live or die, lets be done with this"

Carmard nods slightly in response.

"Aye, we go and take the main chamber and prepare the stoneburner. Pray that Dumathion shows us a way clear"

"Now that's a plan... or exit route is divine intervention?" Duervar snorts and shakes his head. "Since there ain't no Gods, or one's that care, its been fun" growls the atheist dwarf at Carmard's remark. It orders him a few stares, but under the circumstances no one said anything.

The duergar Sonnlinor looks at duervar with some confusion for a moment.

"Why is a non believer serving with the Patriarch of Moradin?" he asks Duervar. The dwarf glares at the Sonnlinor and sighs.

"Old debt, ok? Leave it at that" he warns.

Tora, Tora, Tora...

With the explosion rocking the caverns, it was time to start the next phase of the attack. Thordek rushes between the two different gates, and his adamantine axe makes quick work of the hinges on the door. His axe cuts through them and he kicks them open with his heavy boots. They both fall with a resounding bang. Moments later, the first smoke grenades tumble to the ground. They sputter as the wicks sink into the casing and then white smoke billows out of them, obscuring the door ways.

As the dwarves line up on one door, the mercenaries line up on the opposite one. On the other side, the mercenaries take to the door. Surprisingly enough, Marcus Black is first in his column. They actually pass a bottle of something down the line of their soldiers as they ready for the attack. Whatever works for them, apparently…

The duergar scramble up the rubble of the fallen tower, the Sonnlinor himself included. They have shields in one hand and crossbows in the other, to give themselves all the protection they can get. Instead of a formation, they spread out, picking whatever cover they can find.

On the Patriarchate side, a giant thrown boulder careens off the door and rolls into the emptiness behind it. The impact sent stone fragments flying, from both the stone and the boulder. On the other side, the crack of a boulder can be heard against the stone wall as it misses the door.
With all the pieces ready to move, Carmard concentrates for a moment and grips his hammer in one hand and a wand in the other. Wisps of blue wind swirl around him, a spell to deflect arrows. Next comes a faintly shimmering globe to resist spells. The next spell causes him to float in the air, as a spell of flying takes effect.

Protected as best he can, the dwarven arcanii rises from the ground and into the air above the rubble and higher yet. The wand spits one ball of fire, than a second one, out into the enemy formation as the duergar crossbows clank and spit death into their massed foes from behind heavy cover. While none of the Patriarchate forces can see the immediate result, the screams of anguish from the attacks is plain enough for all to hear, for a moment.

The burning enemy and debris were just what Carmard had been hoping for, as the cagey dwarf reaches for another wand and casts spells of pyrotechnics into the enemy. Explosions and splashes of bright, if fairly harmless, light ripple through the enemy. The confusion, on top of their initial losses, is enough to shake several groups of hobgoblins as the light and fireworks, a total surprise to them, and leaves their units shaken…

“Now! Attack’em now!” is Carmard’s command.

Through the gates the dwarves and mercenaries rush, into a battlefield already filled with light, fire and choking smoke...

The Battle Commences

The dwarves and mercenaries push through the doors, through the choking smoke and into fight. With the advantage of elevation, the duergar’s crossbow bolts zing over their heads and cut down several more confused hobgoblins. Some of the duergar hurl some of the alchemist fire bombs the dwarves had spared them into the hobgoblin formation, eliciting squeals of pain.

Into that confusion charge Black’s Company and the minotaurs, but not before another fireball from Carmard and a lightning bolt from Black Company’s wizard, Werner, rip through the enemy as well. When the minotaurs hit on the far left, closest to the dwarven advance, the rest of the Black Company file in as well. It quickly turns into a bloody scrum, with the minotaurs and Black himself taking the greatest toll.
While Duervar, Bundok and Grathalmor peel off to anchor the right flank, the rest of the dwarves, along with Arum, flow around the enemy line to square off against four frost giant soldiers. Behind them is a robed figure with a giant humanoid figure in heavy armor and a massive sword that stands aside from the battle. As the dwarves move towards the frost giants, the wizard starts casting a spell and sends a bolt of lightning towards Carmard. The spear of electricity hits the faintly shimmering globe protecting Carmard, but the spell dissipates it with ease.

Now, the dwarves are engaged with the suddenly exposed frost giants…

Nega squares off against one, while Magnum and Thordek square off a second. Nalrak and Hjalmar can square off the third one, but a fourth one is flanking them.

Arum and Buna remain unengaged.

Assume you all won the initiative and act first against your foes.

Nega v. Frost Giant 1

Nega moves forward, shield facing the looming giant and mace held back for a powerful swing. The monstrous foe looms as the battle begins in earnest to her right. Nega liked few things more than fighting giants, except perhaps giant head soup. The reason for that likeness, as well as the mystery of its recipe, remained a family secret. From a family of dragon hunters, she had quite a few unusual recipes…

This giant, armed and armored as it was, was a wiser foe than the last wave of giants and it takes a defensive stance as she approaches it. Calling out Berronar’s name, her mace blazes with a nimbus of golden light and she slams it right into the giant’s armored knee. The metal knee guard is shattered and torn by the divine energy and blood oozes from the wound…

Nega rolled a 24 with her power attack + other bonuses and hits the giant, if barely. The Mace of Berronar does 20 HP damage to the frost giant…

Off balance for the moment, the giant swings back at Nega but she parries the downward blow with her shield and smack’s the giant’s axe away her mace.

Thordek & Magnum v. Frost Giant 2

Thordek only has time for one attack as he approaches the giant, and he immediately goes low to try and hamstring the giant. Unfortunately, it’s armor turns the axe away as sparks and links of chain fly.

Magnum has much better luck with his giant bane axe, as it cleaves through plate mail and chain as he reaches high to open the giant’s belly. It reacts with a grunt and then a bowl as dark red blood flows from the wound. It smolders from the angry energy of the giant bane axe, and even Magnum’s massive arms and enhanced strength strain to pull the axe from the wound. Dark blood flows from the wound. With but one blow against the giant, he knew he had the advantage over the beast. While it might not die quite yet, he was sure the wound would eventually prove mortal as well.

His second blow is a quick slash, but that one is turned away by the giant’s thick armor, much to his chagrin.

The giant, already badly wounded, swings desperately at Magnum now with it’s much larger axe. The dwarf doesn’t even need to move as the blow hits the stone floor below him, sending chips of stone flying.

Frost Giant rolls a natural 1. Oops!

Nalrak & Hjalmar v. Frost Giant 3 & 4

The two dwarves are paired off against two giants now, and it may be more than they can handle solely.

Hjalmar lines up on one giant and swings his hammer at the giant. This one has a long blue and white beard and seems older than the rest. Meaning it was either more feeble or much more experienced. He didn’t know and was eager to find out. You didn’t get many Frost Giants down south, by definition really.

Not that it bothered Hjalmar’s attack. He goes low and bashes his hammer into the giant’s side, where his kidneys were. The blow staggers the giant for a moment, as it swoons from the pain and the smoldering energy of his divine hammer burning it’s evil hide.

Hjalmar can only get in 1 attack, but it does 22 damage.

The giant’s reply is simply ineffective, the great axe comes flying downwards and bashes into the stone much like the one fighting Magnum. Obviously, this was not a veteran at all, Hjalmar thinks sadly.

The giant 3 rolls another natural 1. Oops again!

Nalrak takes up a somewhat defensive position, but none the less, his hammer strikes true and hard. He swings it low and upwards into the giant’s groin with absolutely cruel result.

Nalrak’s hammer does 17 hp damage to the giant.

Stunned, the giant’s response is ineffective against the dwarf. While Nalrak may not have a shield, his armor is especially thick and while the axe connects and rocks his backwards, the only damage is a lost breath and a bruise. Maybe. He grins under his beard, something Nalrak does very rarely indeed.

Buna and Arum move up, with Arum landing a dispel on the enemy wizard to unknown effect, for now.

Both Buna and Carmard follow up with the attack by throwing a cloud of magic missiles at the enemy wizard in his moment of vulnerability. The furious storm smashes into the wizard, but his amulet blazes and nothing happens.

Joining the fight

Initiative: [roll1]

Wyatt and his company descended onto the battlefield. While the lot of them might not be hardened warriors like the dwarves, that didn't mean they couldn't pitch in during a fight.

Wyatt took off down the battlefield, heading for Nega and her giant target. His tiny stature and weapon almost looked silly compared to the hulking giant, but this sort of situation wasn't unfamiliar to him. He took care to avoid other enemies that might interrupt his approach.

With a jump, he whirled his light mace's grip around his wrist before catching it again and swinging away at Nega's target from behind...

After the result of his (likely unsuccessful) attack, he circles around and takes cover behind Nega. All of this happens in one, swift movement, the giant probably unable to keep up.

"Thought you mighta looked a bit lonely over here, eh? Don't count me out just 'cause I ain't clad in armor and carryin' an axe, I can tangle with 'dese bruisers just as well as the rest of you lot. Shall we?"

Nega v. Frost Giant 1

Frost Giant Initiative: 14
Nega Initiative: 3

The frost giant is hobbled from Nega’s powerful blow to the knee. While it may have just earned a life-long limp for its trouble, it had plenty of fight left in it. It shifts its stance to protect it’s knee and look’s down at the hateful dwarf before it. Rather than sending it’s axe on a downward cut, it chops downward and past Nega, than reverses the attack into a horizontal slash using it’s monstrous strength.

Berronar’s luck must have protected Nega, as the attack is aimed too low and split’s the stone floor in a shower of rock fragments and sparks. The giant curses fiercely as it once again misses.

Once again, the giant misses. This time, it’s a natural 1 as well! It follows up the attack with a growl and a more accurate second attack, sending another blow banging off Nega's fine mithril armor to no effect towards here.

Thankful to still have legs, Nega moves in right behind the swing and sends her mace as hard as she can at the giant’s side. Her blow is rewarded by a solid BANG as she connects with, and splits, the giant’s armor. It howls in pain from the blow and the burning of the divine fury of Berronar’s mace. As Nega pulls the mace back, wisps of smoke rise from the ugly, bloody wound. She just broke a few bones, she was sure of that.

Already in close, Nega makes another forceful attack against the giant. She raises her mace and brings it down hard on the giant’s knee cap. The shiny steel of the poleyn armor protecting the knee is battered, but the sharply angled armor causes the blow to slide off with minimal damage.

The giant is now moderately wound.

Thordek and Magnum v. Frost Giant 2

Thordek Initiative: 21
Magnum Initiative: 11
Frost Giant Initiative: 10

The quick attacking Thordek steps sideways to confuse his opponent, betting on its’ slow fist and his fast axe to gain an advantage. The giant must have lost track of him for a moment, because Thordek pressed his attack with lethal intent. His adamantine axe and it’s razor sharp edge cleave through the giant’s armor plate and chain as easy as if it was a field ration can. The first attack cuts deeply, very deeply into the side of its’ belly. As he pulls the axe free, dark red blood pours from the wound. He may as well have opened a can of paint and poured it across the giant.

It reels from the blow and staggers backwards, and Thordek pushes ahead to give it no chance to recover. Seeing the giant clutch the terrible wound, he swings again at the giant.

His next blow connects as well, and to great effect. Although he was trying to cut the giant’s arm clean off, the armor is too thick to allow him to cut that deeply. The crack of axe splitting armor is echoed by the crack of one beneath though, and once again blood pours from a wound.

Thordek connects for 42 HP and an additional 15 HP from the second blow.

With the giant already horribly wounded, no doubt lethally if not immediately, Magnum drives in against his unbalanced foe as well. A song in his heart and an axe in his hand, Magnum uses a back handed swing as the giant stumbles and the axe catches his foe right behind the knee. He swings hard, and the axe sinks deep. Very deep.

So deeply, the giant’s leg buckled at an impossible angle as it fell screaming to the ground. It’s left leg all but separated from its body now. It howls from the pain and tries to push itself away from these two dwarves, but the dwarf’s stride Is faster. The next blow cleaves through it’s neck, not quite beheading it but certainly silencing the prone monster.

Both dwarves look at each other for a moment and shrug. That was easy…

Nalrak versus Giant 3

Frost Giant 3 Initiative: 13
Nalrak Initiative: 10

The frost giant gets the first swing at the heavily armored Nalrak, but the sheer thickness of his armor allows the attack to rock him backwards but never pierce his plate. The giant’s eyes go wide in surprise that he did not even wound the bearded old dwarf. It's next blow is more accurate, but Nalrak lets his armor take the second blow from the giant and he shrugs that one off as well.

Nalrak’s reply is hard though, as once again his hammer strikes the giant and it yelps in pain as the hammer strikes the giant’s hip.

Nalrak does 17 HP to the giant.

Hjalmar versus Frost Giant 4

Hjalmar Initiative: 10
Frost Giant Initiative: 1

It was rare that Hjalmar moved faster than someone else, but this time he managed to get in his attack before the giant. His blow strikes hard and true, and he slams his hammer hard into the giant’s side. It howls in pain as the hammer and its’ spike piercing the giant’s plate mail armor. The next blow is in the same place, battering the giant even more. In quick succession, Hjalmar has the giant back on its heels.

Hjalmar strikes the giant for 21 and 22 hp damage, seriously hurting it.

The giant still has plenty of fight left in it though and it swings back hard at Hjalmar, willing to trade blows with the dwarf still. It’s axe comes flashing down at the rugged paladin and connects solidly with the paladin. He raises his shield and buts his shoulder behind it and the massively strong swing bounces right off the shield. Without waiting, it sends the next attack down at the dwarf with a wide, reckless swing that only hits the stone floor again in a shower of stone fragments and sparks.

The giant rolls a 29 v. Hjalmar’s AC 34 (shield of faith + presumably Silver Beard). It’s second roll is, I swear to Moradin, another natural 1!

New Arrivals!

Unable to locate a foe on his assigned mission from Buelyir, as they all seem to have come out to play with the dwarves, Wyatt joins the main battle with Sable at his side. They swing in from behind and eye the enemy mage and the massive figure guarding him. Seeing that Hjalmar was fighting alone, Wyatt scurries towards the crusty old paladin to lend assistance…

He appears suddenly and surprisingly to the giant and bangs his mace against the giant’s foot as hard as he can. The iron sabaton protecting the giant’s foot through is unyielding and the mace bounces off it with no effect besides a dent.

Far behind, Sable volleys two arrows from her short bow at the giant’s back. It’s such a big target, she hardly even needs her bows special precision to hit it. Both shots hit, but the first is deflected by the giant’s armor. The next sinks into it, but does only minimal damage to the giant.

Doing all she can afford to do, she waves to Wyatt that he’s on his own. Her attention turns towards the mage now, as she slips back into cover…

Arum: Cackling with glee, Arum sends a fireball hurtling towards the enemy wizard now that his protective spells have been torn down. Fire against the Aurilites seemed a fine enough idea to him. Indeed, the ball of fire explodes with a rewarding bang and he loses the mage and his guard in the bright flare of the explosion for a moment. When the fire clears, he sees the mage hiding behind a smoking cloak and seemingly stunned by the attack. The armored figure beside the wizard seems to have utterly ignored the attack.

Buna follows up the attack with a crossbow bolt that hits the enemy mage, but nowhere lethally. Carmard follows up with a throw of his hammer as he flies high in the air. The dwarven throwing hammer arcs unerringly towards the wizard, but the armored guardian interposes itself between the hammer and the wizard and takes the blow in its chest plate.

Now came the wizard’s time of reply. Seeing that one of his giants had already been slain, the wizard begins an incantation and moments later a white fog appears over Thordek and Magnum’s head. The air turns a blue and swirls for a moment, than large chunks of ice the size of anvils begins to pour from the cloud.

The circumference of the stormy cylinder is enough to engulf Magnum and Thordek, but also Hjalmar, Nalrak and Wyatt as well. Unable to avoid the sudden onslaught, they can only hope to survive it…

Ice Storm Damage

Magnum – 21 HP
Thordek – 15 HP
Hjalmar – 26 HP
Nalrak – 19 HP
Wyatt – 20 HP

Wyatt gives a salute of acknowledgement to Sable, knowing she worked best on her own in any case and that his secondary role was combat. His train of thought was interrupted by a rain of hail on his head, pelting him painfully. Fortunately, his potion of Aid he used earlier helped ease the pain, but it was still irritating. Even more irritating was that it slowed him down. He decided to play it safe, strafing Hjalmar's target as best he could while minding his own defense. His slowed speed wouldn't allow him to return to Hjalmar's position, but he decided giving Hjalmar the benefit of a flank was worth it.

The Battle Continues....

As the dwarves and allies battle the frost giants and their leader, the main bodies of both forces clash in the center…

Using the height advantage of the rubble and ramparts, the duergar shoot over their allies and into the ranks of enemy hobgoblins. Their fire is accurate and they whittle down the rear ranks of the Aurilites, but the hobgoblins are tough and well armored…

Tasster and his sons, accompanied by both minotaurs, are cutting a bloody wedge into the enemies front. They cut deeply and terribly into enemy ranks, but soon find themselves surrounded and fending off as many attacks as they make. Blood runs freely from both sides, and one of Tasster’s sons has to withdraw. In the side of Tasster’s armor, an axe is wedged into his side and blood splashes from the wound while the fletching of an arrow protrudes from his back. Wounded, the fierce dwarf prince battles on and screams out war cries as he battles on. One hobgoblin manages to stab the dwarf in the back with a crude spear. Whether it wounded him or not, it certainly enraged Tasster and he immediately separated its head from its shoulders and kicked the body away. The other hobgoblins back away from him for a moment in fear...

Black’s Company, by contrast, holds to a strict formation behind their shields and grinds their way through the enemies shield wall. They hew at their foes with axe and sword and while they inflict losses, two of their new recruits are wounded badly. Still, they hold their line and pin the enemy front in place. That apparently did not satisfy Marcus Black though, who ordered his wizard to join the fray. In a coordinated maneuver, the shield wall pushes forward and shoulders the enemy line apart enough for Weddle to have a clear shot. A fireball shoots through the gap and explodes just over the enemies head with a boom and a howl of angry fire. The hobgoblins scream and fall back away as Black’s Company surges forward. The enemy does not crumble though, for the many survivors are quick to reform and hold their ground again but they are further back than before.

On the left flank, Grathalmor, Bundok and Duervar have fewer to face being on the end of the line, but have drawn the attention of a heavily armored hobgoblin with a great sword and 4 other sergeants. That battle continues on, and the two groups seem evenly matched….

Nega v. Frost Giant 1

Frost Giant Initiative: 14
Nega Initiative: 3

Having taken enough of a battering, the frost giant regains its footing and snarls in rage and pain at the frustrating dwarf in the winged helmet that had been battering it so. It takes a moment to think and feints an attack, withdrawing it just before Nega could block it. The giant pivots and sends its axe flying back in a spinning arc in the opposite direction and it connects hard enough to send Nega staggering back a foot. Her armor is pierced and blood runs from her back shoulder. It’s hot with pain, but it doesn’t cause the paladin to cry out in pain.

She recovers in enough time to batter the next blow away with her shield, but she can feel the strength sapped from her shield arm by the blow… Another blow like that, she might lose its use.

The frost giant hits Nega for 28 HP.

Nega presses on with her attack, but her first blow caroms off the giant’s armor to no ill effect. She just misses the seam in the armor she was aiming for. The next, quicker attack, fails as well when the giant uses the wide blade of its axe to catch the blow and push her and her mace away…

Blood flowing from both foes now, this duel was about to get more interesting.

Thordek and Magnum v. Frost Giant 2

Thordek Initiative: 21
Magnum Initiative: 11

Battered by the storm of ice from the enemy wizard, Thordek curses his preparation and casts a spell of elemental protection instead of pressing his attack. It occurs to him that if his foe could cast that spell, a Cone of Cold spell might also be in his repertoire and he had saw enough of that spell already from a certain Ice Devil.

Magnum shrugs off the attack however, and continues to press forward. While neither the wizard or its guardian are within striking distance of his axe, his wand is another matter. He reaches for it from his belt and holds it aloft, calls out his praise for Clangeddin’s fiery vengeance and calls a pillar of flame to appear and blast the enemy wizard. It moves away from the worst of it, but the wizard is clearly singed by the flame and divine power of the spell. Its guardian is outside of the arc of the spell however, and remains unscathed if not scalded by the proximity to the blast of fire.

Getting a closer look now at the wizard’s guardian, Magnum’s appraisal is that it must be a rather tough opponent and it might not be wise to attack him alone nor leave the wizard free to act.

Nalrak versus Giant 3

Frost Giant 3 Initiative: 13
Nalrak Initiative: 10

The wounded frost giant recovers from the dwarf’s last blow and swings the bearded tormentor with precision, sending its axe on a downward flashing arc. The blow rakes Nalrak’s breastplate armor and sends fragments of steel flying as the axe crunches through the thickest part of his armor. The blade bites deep and cracks a rib and slices a pectoral muscle badly. With a yank that nearly topples the dwarf, the giant pulls its axe free of his armor and swings again but the sturdy dwarf twists just enough to let the axe hit his thick shoulder armor and bounce off.

The giant scored a 21 HP blow against Nalrak.

Neither of Nalrak’s replies hit the giant well enough to wound it however, as its armor holds up to the dwarf’s hammering blows.

Nalrak rolled a 2 and a 7, neither of which came within a mile of hitting the armored giant.

Wyatt & Hjalmar versus Frost Giant 4

Hjalmar Initiative: 10
Frost Giant Initiative: 1

Wyatt tries his best to support Hjalmar. While the debris and cold from the spell had limited his mobility for a moment, he still manages to dart in and strike the giant with a painful blow. He crunches his mace against the back of the giant’s knee and inflicts serious damage with his well-placed blow.

Wyatt connects with a total of 17 melee points and 3 acid damage.

Having just taken a serious battering from the ice spell of the enemy wizard, the dwarf is in an even nastier mood and he swings furiously at the giant. One stroke after another is deflected by the giant’s parries and he only succeeds in backing it up a few feet. Wyatt’s attempt at flanking the giant was not quite enough to help him…

It would seem the giant was luring in the heavily armored dwarf, for its leg flashes low at Hjalmar’s feet and tries to hook him and pull him down. The blow catches Hjalmar exactly how the giant intends before he can react. The giant sends Hjalmar toppling to the ground in a lucky and surprising move.

Laying flay on his face now, there is nothing Hjalmar can do as the giant tries to split him in half with his axe. Fortunately, his armor does not yield completely and while the blow is powerful, it is not fatal. Hjalmar has enough time to roll over before the next blow falls and interposes his shield between him and the raging giant’s axe. The force of the blow nearly breaks his armor, but he blocks the blow sufficiently…

The giant succeeded in a trip attack against Hjalmar and topples him to the ground. The follow up attack does 23 HP to the dwarf.

Arum Faer Wed & Buna:

Seeing the potency of the enemy wizard and its guardian, Arum throws his biggest chip into the pot by casting his Cloud kill rune. It takes him a moment as he focuses on summoning the power of the unfamiliar rune and directing it correctly, but he manages it. It was not his first rune, certainly…

A cloud of mustard colored gas appears around the wizard and its guardian. It billows and for a moment, a fog of blue is mixed in with the ugly colored gas. The two disappear into the cloud for a moment and Arum is unable to see them. It takes him a few seconds, but the towering form of the guardian stands seemingly unphased by the gas, but the wizard he is protecting is choking on the gas. Having already taken a fireball, a flames strike and now a gas spell, the wizard quickly withdraws from the gas cloud and takes no other action.

“Damn it, Arum! Now I can’t see him!” Buna exclaims, cursing the gnomes spell for blocking her line of sight on the wizard. She snarls and watches the effect for a moment.

“Gas isn’t hurting that wizard’s guardian!” she reports. Looking around for something to do she knows will work, she quickly throws a magic missile spell at the frost giant that had just toppled Hjalmar. Angry blue balls of enemy shoot from her finger tips and thud into the giant’s sternum. It groans and clutches its chest, clearly reeling from the blow. It’s wounds are catching up with it…

The Guardian:

Standing almost 8 feet tall and wielding a greatsword equal to its height, the massive guardian senses an order from its charge. A ghostly blue light flares under its visor, seemingly in acknowledgement. It than moves forward with an impossible grace; indeed it seems to glide ahead with virtually no effort at a surprising speed.

It moves directly towards Magnum, who had just called down a powerful fire spell against the Aurilite wizard. It arrives within range of its sword, but out of the way of Magnum’s axe and opens its visor. Magnum looks into the visor and what he sees is horrible enough to stun the cleric for a moment and leave him shaken by the image.

Two strokes of the creature’s greatsword flash through the air, and the first bites through the side of Magnum’s armor and opens up a nasty gash in steel and flesh. The second blow rings off his helmet with no ill effect.

Magnum is stunned for 1 round and shaken for 5 after viewing what is behind the visor of the guardian. He can neither remember or describe it, only knowing that it is both awful and unholy.

The guardian also inflicted a 18 HP hit on Magnum.

Wyatt

Wyatt's second try on the giant landed clean. With the satisfying clinking sound his mace typically makes when it strikes on flesh, he lets out a grin, and says, "Say goodbye to your kneecaps, chucklehead!"

His grin turns into a frown when Hjalmar's effort is thrown back in his face, and then Hjalmar is thrown ON his face. "Ah, crap." Realizing that he wasn't meant for such blows himself, he decided to give the giant one more hit, circling off and jumping past Hjalmar before sprinting off to stay out of its melee distance. "I'm doin' the best I can, here, Hjalmar, whether you appreciate it or not. Just don't go dyin' on me!"

Attack the giant again! Move around the side of it toward Hjalmar with Spring Attack, to avoid AoOs, and then move away from it, putting Hjalmar between it and Wyatt (because Hjalmar can still take AoOs while prone), and try to move as far as I can away from it and stay out of melee range with any other enemies as best as possible. I've a move speed of 40'.

Sorta tricky to do without a map in front of me...

For a seasoned veteran who'd trained to fight giants, being tossed onto his face was a sharp blow to his pride. Wyatt's prancing around his prone frame didn't make manners any better. Calling upon Moradin's radiance, Hjalmar uses all of his Lay on Hands ability to heal his wounds (28 HP). With a growl he clambers back to his feet, ready to put this giant back in its place.

As the time for battle drew near, Talamir thought back to the brief exchange much earlier with a touch of regret.

"How is it that a Bladesinger, comes to be with a company like Black's? Oh yes, I know what you are. And it surprises me. What happened?"

There was no condescension in his tone. Just curiosity. The paths that others walk were not for him to judge, but he was curious.

There was a long silent pause, during which Talamir did not look up at Arman. At last he had replied in Elven, his tone decisive and final - though without any touch of rudeness.
http://img706.imageshack.us/img706/7632/talamirs.png
"My tale I will keep to myself; it is neither happy nor fit for a fair lament,"

Rising to his feet he added quietly.

"Nor worth troubling the ears of a quessir with."

With that he had resumed his silence once more, walking away with a small nod and ending the conversation.

His mind returning to the moment, Talamir glanced towards the elven Faern ... and recalled his vows.

Buelyir, Talamir, Arman, Flint and Kelith

The five remaining members of the flanking party had moved forward after the destruction of the old dwarven flour mill, and they move swiftly. Even Arman pushes himself to try and keep up, biting back the pain from his wounded leg as he hops and limps forward. Centuries of built up flour dust and whatever else might have been refined in there had produced a loud enough explosion to draw attention.

Attention indeed.

As the five moved past the warehouses and into the far right side of the main chambers, they can see their comrades are already engaged in a serious fight.

Before them stand a group of 20 armored hobgoblins marching in their direction, with a frost giant on either side. A human with a blue cloak trimmed in white fur leads the group.

Will post a map Sunday for everything, if not sooner, but I wanted to give Talamir and Arman a chance to reach IC. If anyone would like to run Kelith for this combat, please let me know...

Nega v. Frost Giant 1

Frost Giant Initiative: 14
Nega Initiative: 3

Having drawn blood for the first time against this troublesome foe, the wounded frost giant seems reinvigorated by the sense of opportunity. Two mighty swings fall towards Nega from high above her, but the giant gave her two much time and she side stepped the first blow. The next blow sweeps back towards her, and she knocks the blow away with a block from her shield.

Her own first swing hits the giant solidly, but fails to breach its armor. Her next blow is against the side of the giant’s leg though and the mace pierces chain and metal plate and seriously hurts the giant’s leg. It hobbles from the blow and curses Nega as blood runs from the wound.

Nega hit the Frost Giant for 25 HP damage.

Magnum versus The Guardian:

Stunned by gazing into the face of the wizard’s guardian, Magnum has no time to even contemplate what it was he just saw. He has no time to react as the towering foe swings at him again with a brutal looking falchion.

The thing moved faster than anything that big had any right to move, and its next swing is a head stroke aimed at decapitating Magnum. The Alaghor manages to raise his shield just enough to divert the blow. Instead of opening up his neck or severing it outright, the deflected blow rides up into the side of his dwarf helmet. The blow tears the helmet from his head and opens up a wound on the side of his face up until his head. The blow stings badly, his jaw hurts and blood pours from the head wound and he hopes no major blood vessels had been torn open. The heavy blow sends Magnum staggering backwards 5 feet. He only has a moment to raise his shield again before the next blow comes in, trying to split his head open. A raise shield absorbs the blow, but the hit is hard enough to sting badly.

Fortunate to be alive, Magnum returns to his defensive stance and tries to clear his mind of what he saw. He remains shaken for what he had saw…

Magnum suffers 18 hp damage and is now seriously wounded.

He is also Shaken as a result of the Guardian’s visage, and suffers a -2 from all rolls (attack, checks, etc)

Thordek Initiative: 21

Believing that Magnum could handle the wizard’s massive guardian for a moment, perhaps mistakenly, he decides to cast a scorching ray spell at the wizard. Two fist sized rays of fire stab out from Thordek’s free hand. The fires send the mage dodging out of their way, and he almost succeeds as the first ray narrowly misses and pulverizes rock instead. The trailing beam hits the wizard in the leg and burns through his cloak. It sends him tumbling to the ground, a pall of smoke rising from his robes. Wounded once again, he stands up and snarls something in Thordek’s direction.

Nalrak versus Giant 3

Frost Giant 3 Initiative: 13
Nalrak Initiative: 10

The relentless giant continues to batter away at Nalrak, and his next attack flies down at the cleric and hits him hard. The blow hits him hard in the side of his breast plate and tears it open, cutting deeply into his muscle. The next swing of the axe follows quickly thereafter as the giant roars now that it had drawn blood again. He has the time to side step and duck the swing as it hits nothing but air. He just wishes he could have done that the first time, he curses himself mentally.

Nalrak is hit for 25 HP, and is now moderately wounded.

Still standing, Nalrak barks out a taunt at the giant about showing it how to really hit but his blow fails to wound the giant. Once again, his hammer bangs against the giant’s thick armor but is ineffective. Looking behind him, Nalrak waves his hand at the waiting duergar with the flamethrowers, and then he backs away from the frost giant…

Hjalmar, Wyatt versus Frost Giant 4

Hjalmar Initiative: 10
Frost Giant Initiative: 1

Still ahead of the giant, Hjalmar ducks inside the giant’s swing and uses the moment as a breather to heal himself. Pressing his clenched to his chest for a moment, he concentrates and lets the healing energy let him recover from some of his battering.

With Hjalmar taking a breather, the diminutive Wyatt slips around the stumbling giant's notice and leaps high on to the giant, possessed with some mad instinct. He grasps a hand hold on the armor, swings backward and adds his momentum and launches himself and lands a blow. He hits the giant in the skull with his acid spitting mace. The blow hits the giant hard in the temple and cracks its skull badly with acid burning it. The giant stumbles and falls to the ground, brained by Wyatt’s daring move. Holding on, Wyatt rides the falling giant to the ground with a delighted, mad grin on his face.

Wyatt rolled a critical and then I rolled a 20 on the critical threat. If that isn’t instant death, what is?
Arum:

Annoyed the wizard was still alive, Arum sends a knife of ice right back at the Aurilites. The knife hits the wizard solidly in the gut and he doubles over from the blow.

The Wizard:

Seriously wounded now, the wizard composes himself long enough to cast another spell. It looks like he can barely stand. With a soft pop inaudible in the din of battle, he disappears. The invisibility spell causes the wounded wizard to fade from sight.

The Duergar:

Finally having an opening, they rush forward now that they have arc on the giant. Twin streams of fire shoot from their cannisters and engulf the frost giant with flame. It screams from the flames and flails at the oil, trying to get it off. It’s long beard smokes from the flame. It’s not enough to kill the giant, thanks to its armor, but it horribly wounded by the flames…

2011-08-24, 02:23 AM
The throbbing pain in his bleeding head dominated the wounds Magnum had suffered, and made him consider trying to heal up a bit. But he quickly dismissed that thought and concentrated on attack and defense. The rhythm of the pounding pain served to remind him of the Ehontar, though he had surpassed his limit of uses today.

As his allies targeted the wizard with various spells, Magnum grinned through the anguish of his injures, though it quickly turned to a frown as the enemy wizard vanished. Glancing around quickly to assess the battlefield as he squeezed the wand in his hand, he saw an opportunity and hoped to eliminate several developing problems at once. He used the last charge of the wand to engulf the frost giant fighting Nalrak, adding to the fiery damage of the flame throwers, hoping to free up more allies nearby.

Dropping the useless stick he drew his giantbane axe and prepared to continue the fight, all the while trying to defend himself the best he could against this enigmatic and dangerous enemy.

He bellowed out in dwarven, more in anger than desperation, "I could use some help!"

OOC: I was going to restart the Ehontar, but uhm, he can only use it 1/day at his current level, and I think I used it at the fort AND here, thus already got an extra use... ooops!

Nega v. Frost Giant 1

Frost Giant Initiative: 14
Nega Initiative: 3

Having already wounded Nega, the giant accepts its wounds and continues to press the dwarf to finish off its kill. Its axe cuts downwards at Nega, and once again its axe drives past her shield and bites into her armor. The blade pierces her mithril armor once again, streaking the fine everbright finish with blood once. The wound is enough to make Nega gasp from the pain.

She controls her staggering just enough to step around the giant’s next swing, before she readies her next attack against the giant battering her.

The frost giant hits Nega for 20 HP. She is now at half HP.

Battered but not beaten, Nega’s retaliation is lethal. Her mace batters the giant once, than twice on either side of its chest. The divine fury of her mace burns the giants badly, and it staggers from the wounds.

She strikes the giants for 23 HP and 19 HP of wounds.

Magnum versus The Guardian:

On the defensive now as he stands alone against the wizard’s guardian, Magnum reels from his own wounds. Whatever it was, he tried to avoid its gaze. He also tried to avoid that massive meat cleaver of a sword it was wielding. He also knew he needed help, and the only way to get that help was to clear away what was distracting his friends. As he begins his Ehontar song again, he swings his wand first towards the guardian than towards the giant fighting Nalrak. After getting blasted by the flamethrowers, the smoldering giant couldn’t have much fight left in him. It was also tying up Nalrak. So he discharged the last charge of the wand on top of the giant and let the flames howl and dance around it.

The blast of holy flame glow blazes and glows as the giant screams underneath its focus. Its skin turns black from the fire and sloths off, exposing bone and charred flesh. With an almost child-like wail, the giant falls to ground as fire continues to burn its skin and clothing.

Having expended the last charge of the wand, Magnum growls and casts the husk at the wizard’s guardian. It bounces off the thing’s armor and the crystal shatters. The thing did not even flinch from the throw. Magnum could feel its eyes burning into him from beneath its helm now, and it caused the proud warrior to flinch away for a moment as the energy beneath the helm glowed brightly.

With no more sound than the swish of oiled joints, the guardian glides forward towards Magnum and swings its sword in two powerful, precise strokes at the dwarf. Once again, the creature swings for Magnum’s head and the blade crashes into his thick sallet helmet. Only dwarven steel keeps his foe from splitting his head, and he sees stars as the blow pulverizes him. Without his axe in hand, Magnum only has his stout shield and this time he catches the blow and pushes it away. Only he can’t move the guardian’s sword and only manages to push himself away from it.

The Guardian rolls a 20 but cannot confirm the critical and does 19 HP to the battered Magnum.

Thordek versus The Guardian

With the wizard gone for now, Thordek turns his attention to the wizard’s indomitable guardian and prepares to attack it. He was not sure what it was, but it was damned dangerous. Still, they had numbers on it. How many of us can it kill before they took it down though was another matter.

Thordek steps in and, not underestimating its intelligence, throws a feint at it and then follows up with a real attack. He thought he was about to land a good hit on it and let his adamantine axe cut it open so he could see what was inside. Instead, his axe is met with the fastest parry he had ever saw with such a large weapon. His axe is caught, hooked and moved away. He has just enough time to duck as the guardian takes a level swing at his head.

Considering Magnum had been struck twice in the head, it seemed this thing was going for kill shots on every swing.

Not comforting.

Thordek rolled a 2 on his attack. Not good enough.

Nalrak versus The Guardian

With the giant he was facing slain in a blaze of fire, Nalrak turns his attention to the next target. With Nega too far away to get to, that left the guardian to deal with. He moves forward and into the towering foe’s range. He swings his hammer, but it bangs off the guardian’s armor.

At least Nalrak had its attention now…

Hjalmar versus The Guardian

With all but one giant down, the wounded and angry Hjalmar lumbers towards the guardian. He did not know what it was, but he’d fought bigger in his centuries, he figured. Shield held tightly and in perfect position, he too wades in against it and swings his hammer. The blow rings off its armor, and his blow is enough to pierce the armor with his hammer’s spike. It’s armor is caved in and the hole in the armor shines with a blue light. Having finally landed a wound on it, Hjalmar frowns that it seems to have no pained reaction to the blue. Maybe it was some sort of construct? He blinks his eye again though, and rivulets of a blue liquid seep from the wound.

What he also noticed is that the holy fury that his hammer normally wrought, burning the wicked, was silent. Whatever the thing was, it had not been judged to be evil. What it was though was anyone’s guess.

Hjalmar inflicts 19 HP against the Guardian

Wyatt v. Giant 1

With the frost giant and Nega trading blows, Wyatt guessed who would survive that exchange and figured it might not be Nega. He scoots forward and swipes at the giant, swinging his bat behind the giant’s knee. He lands a solid blow and translates him momentum into some extra damage against the giant. While it had not noticed Wyatt drift into the exchange, it surely felt his presence now. Wisely, Wyatt cleared out as quickly as he came in to avoid the giant’s retaliation.

Wyatt inflicts 24 HP against the frost giant.

Arumfaerwed

Taking a chance, Arum throws another dagger of ice in the direction of where he last saw the enemy mage. He hopes it has not had time to move away from its last location after it casts the invisibility spell that made it disappear so inconveniently.

The dagger hits the ground and explodes in a shard of ice. If the fragments hit anyone, he could not tell the effect.

Duergar Flamers:

With three giants down and only Nega’s remaining, the two search for an opening where their flame throwers would not wound any of their allies. Finding no opening against the giant, the guardian or the vicious battle between the hobgoblin regulars and their own forces, the two duergar back away for the time being. They also split up, to avoid both being taken out by the invisible wizard.

Buna Soulhammer:

With only two targets to choose from now, Buna bites her lip and drops her axe back into her belt. Concentrating for a moment, her hand suddenly leaps with hissing, crackling electricity and she closes the gap on th wizard’s guardian.

“I don’t care what ye are, yer a tin can and I bet ye feel this alright!” she shouts unnecessarily at it.

She thrusts her open palm outwards and presses it against the guardian’s armored shell and lets the electrical charge explode from her hand into it. The guardian is jolted by the electricity and seems momentarily stunned. Under its helm, the smoldering blue energy blazes in reaction to the attack. It backs away a moment and looks at Buna, eye slits blazing with angry azure energy.

“Got yer attention now!” she taunts it. Whatever the thing was, it was clearly an intelligent thing.

Carmard:

Seeing the brutal effectiveness of the wizard’s guardian, Carmard thinks what spells he has that would be useful against it and quickly discounts most options. He hefts his hammer and throws it at the wizard’s guardian from high above as he floats over the battlefield. The hammer flies straight and true and strikes the guardian in the helm hard and skips away. It’s armor is dented and torn once again and energy blazes from the tear.

Carmard strikes the guardian for 13 HP.

Wyatt

After seeing that Nalrak's foe had fallen, Wyatt singles out Nega's target, moving around behind it and delivering a brutal, well-placed strike to the back of the leg to hamstring the giant. "Ooh hoo, I got alla 'dat one!" He swivels around the giant, moving too quickly for the giant to retaliate, running backwards past Nega. His legs rarely stopped moving during a scuffle - it was as if they operated seperately from the rest of his body.

He circles around and starts running back towards the giant, raising his buckler in front of him and his bat over his head, poised to strike. "Don't mind if I lend ya a hand, do ya, Nega?"
he asked, without really giving her a chance or a choice of response as he races past her and strikes at behind the giant again, then keeps on going to keep his distance. It was clear he was making the choice for her, dwarven pride be damned.

Attacking Nega's giant again, same pattern as always. This time, since I'm moving past Nega toward the giant, put as much distance as possible between me and the giant after striking, and try to move into a flanking position and attack from there during the strike if possible.

Talamir looks around quickly, taking in the surrounding area and noting any possible cover against the giants' boulders.

http://img706.imageshack.us/img706/7632/talamirs.png
"Priority it would seem to me would be the flagbearer and giants, then the stronger looking goblins. A nice formation for an area spell, but if what you say about that banner is correct a Fireball may be a waste. What else do we have as our options, either offensively or defensively? A spell of Confusion perhaps, or Slow or Glitterdust? A way to demoralize them, while enhancing our prowess and morale?"

He looks to Buelyir and the others, and glances towards the spot where the now invisible Arman last stood, wondering what the elven mage intends.

"If we've another Greater Invisibility prepared, I believe casting it on Sable would allow her to launch her arrows with devastating effect so she can take down the flag bearer swiftly... whatever we do, I suggest we do quickly, and seek cover against the giants' boulders."

Depending on initiative and if the stuff on the map that looks like rock formation is in fact there and is suitable for cover, Talamir will move immediately to take cover while motioning for others (except the Invisible Arman) to do the same, and as a standard action activate the wand of Shield inside his drawn weapon chamber...

He walked a little over, so that he wouldn't be firing into those in front of him, and taking out a scroll, started chanting the incantation quietly.

Nega v. Frost Giant 1

Frost Giant Initiative: 14

Badly wounded, the giant is determined to end this troublesome dwarf. He swings down at her with his axe, and the blow is too powerful for Nega to stop with her shield this time either. It sheers off a wing from her helmet and as she tries to flinch away, the axe splits her armor right down the chest and cracks her sternum. The blow knocks her breath away once again. One or two more blows like that, it would be the end of her and she knew it. It was all she could do to get her shield to block the next blow. Every breath was a knife of pain now…

Nega is hit for 25 HP... she now has 28 HP left

Nega Initiative: 3

With both seriously injured now, the two combatants continue on. Betting faith, skill and heavy armor over the giant will be enough, Nega fights on without concern for healing herself or relenting in any way.

She presses the attack now even harder, calling on the power of her divine gifts to summon a powerful attack on the giant. Her mace glows a brilliant, shinning gold as she draws it back and bounds towards the giant. Her swing sizzles through the air and connects with the giant’s abdomen. When the blow strikes, it explodes with a burst of divine energy from her mace and the power of her smite and tears the giant’s armor wide open as he buries the mace into its guts. The mortally wounded howls in shock and surprise as it stumbles backwards now, its liver pulverized and blood pouring from the wound now. Seconds later, it topples over backwards. It still breathes, but not for long with that wound.

Wyatt: With the giant down on the ground, but still alive, Wyatt moves over to it quickly. Mercifully, it was unconscious when Wyatt caved in its skull with his bat…

The Guardian: Wounded, but showing no ill effects from it, the guardian turns its attention to Buna now and opens its visor to reveal its horrific visage again. Angry blue light flares from inside its mask and now Buna, Thordek and Hjalmar get a horrifying glimpse at it. All three cannot help but look away and are stunned by what they see and unable to act for a moment.

The guardian strikes swiftly, swinging its falchion the moment she is halted. This blow too strikes her head. The blade sweeps quickly and her head goes flying from her shoulders.

Or so everyone thought for a moment, for it was only her helmet, which is now split and shattered. Struck hard and not fully recovered from her prior wounds though, Buna topples to the ground and is unconscious now. Blood flows from a wound in her head and mouth…

Buna is down and bleeding out at -2 HP and -1 HP per round.

Magnum versus The Guardian:

With his comrades disabled for a moment by the wizard’s guardian, Magnum realizes only he and Nalrak are free for the moment of its dangerous hold. Summoning every ounce of divine power, strength and determination, Magnum tries to cut it down with two savage blows with his axe. With the guardian turned away from him for the moment, Magnum’s blows strike heavily.

First one blow, than the other utterly splits the guardians’ side and back armor as the axe buries itself up to the hilt with each blow. The second blow sinks so deeply into it, he has to push off the guardian with his foot to clear his axe.

Magnum watches it for effect, but instead of blue light blazing from the holes now, a glowing green colored blood flows out now. Knowing if it bleeds, he could kill it, Magnum finds some optimism for the moment.

That was until the creature turned and faced him as quickly as it had ever moved now, its eye slits blazing albeit now with less intensity than before.

Anything mortal should have died from those blows, and Magnum knew it. It should have severed its spine and split its heart in half even. Inexplicably, the thing still lived.

Nalrak: Sharing a look with Magnum, Nalrak considers using the power of his Iron Fist gauntlet to stop the guardian but decides to try one last time to bring down his foe without it. He dared not back away from it and try to leave himself vulnerable and try to save Buna.
It was just too dangerous to risk, at the moment.

Instead, he swung his hammer high over his head and sent it crashing down on the guardian’s helmet. The blow crunched the helmet inward and staggers the guardian for a moment as the blow shakes it. Having pierced its helmet, energy blazes out of the helm now as well, tendrils of blue smoke escaping from it.

Whatever it was, he had just hurt it. Or annoyed it. He was not sure.

Arumfaerwed: Seeing the blows raining down on the guardian, Arum casts a magic missile spell at it once again. Three bolts of green ruby energy slam into it. If they had any effect, it was hard to tell…

Duergar Flamers: Taking their cue from Thordek, the two halt their reverse and move up. With flame throwers in hand, they spray a blank of fire to the left of the battlefield, starting where the wizard was last seen and fanning outward. Neither blast seems to have an effect, however… If the wizard was still around at all, it was not where it was expected…

Buna Soulhammer: Dreaming away on her way to Moradin’s Halls.

Carmard: Seeing Buna down and the guardian still surrounded by his comrades, Carmard is limited in what he can do still. He hurls his hammer at it once again, but this time the throw misses. Undeterred, he starts to fly downwards towards the battle to take Buna’s place. The electrical damage seems to be the only thing that seemed to jolt it, and he wanted to try the same on it before it killed everyone else.

The Wizard: Returning to the battle, the wizard appears in the air, flying 40 feet high now, just as it sends a spell hurtling at Carmard. A giant fist appears and flies towards the Arcanii and clenches around him. Carmard yelps in surprise as it catches him in the air, 20 feet above the ground still. Grappled by the spell, it drives him from the air straight into the ground and pins him there, flat on his back.

Grathalmor: Seeing Carmard driven to the ground from up high, Grathalmor turns from a hobgoblin he had just finished off and gasps in surprise as his charge is brought low. With no one else around, Grathalmor waves for an overwhelmed Duervar and Bundok to hold on as he rushes towards Carmard….

The Sum Alaghor used his newest composition as things began to look their worst:

“Early in the morn until late at night,
We’re ever born for the fight,
Axes and hammers, maces and spears,
Battle’s clamor rings in our ears.

Not often so torn by enemies’ fright,
We’ve worn with courageous might,
The foe stammers, showing fears,
Ye Gods yammer with divine cheers!”

Then added in a few old, possibly familiar, verses as a chorus

“Spillin’ da blood o’foes, dwarven weapons we praised,
Send ‘em into death throes, all be battle crazed.

Steel turns dark blades away, dwarven armory we exalt,
Shield’n armor worn today, black wounds ta halt.

Now ta end da conflict, brethren press on fiercely,
Death ta foes we inflict, as one we win victory!”

Wyatt jumps over the downed giant, just enough to club it in the face with his weapon. "Boink! Take 'dat, ya lumberin' oaf!"

He lands on his feet, skidding a bit past Nega. "You're in a sorry shape, Nega, to be bluntly honest. You better..."

His message is interrupted when Buna falls. "Buna! Ah, damn..." He glances around a bit, worried. "Come on, Sable... I know you're out there. I hope you got somethin' up your sleeves..."

He grimaced a bit, putting his mace in his other hand for a moment, strafing the wizard and drawing a tanglefoot bag from his belt on the go. When he had moved far enough, he threw it at the flying caster in hopes it would make casting spells more difficult, and possibly paint him an easier target whenever Sable decided to show up.

Put mace in off hand, draw tanglefoot bag as part of move action, move the full 40 feet and throw it at the wizard at the end of movement, then put the mace back in the primary hand. Maintain distance from the guardian for the time being, since I don't like being stunned.

Arman Madero: (Initiative 27): Having to choose between neutralizing one of the giants momentarily or the enemy cleric, Arman elects to try and neutralize the enemy cleric. He squints and looks across the battle field and conjures the magic within himself. It was powerful magic he was summoning this time, and the pressure of it built up feeling like a momentary migraine. He clenches his teeth and a sizzling ball of white energy appears between his hands, hissing and popping. Opening with perhaps his best card was debatable, but that banner could otherwise mean his magics would be neutralized if it was used. At least some of them might be. For all Arman knew, it could do nothing at all.

With that uncertainty in mind, he sent his first spell hurtling towards the enemy cleric and hoped for the best. The snarling, twisting, white magic of his Holding spell hissed ahead at a speed that would put a bird to shame and struck the enemy cleric solidly enough. It crackled around him for a moment and everyone on the battlefield seemed to pause a moment to consider the spell’s effect.

Effective the spell was. The enemy cleric stops mid-stride, paralyzed in position by the spell. Still aware, but unable to do more than breath, he is now an easy target for as long as the spell lasts. Arman’s only concern was that, however good a mage he was, the enemy had enough experience to shrug the spell off far quicker than he hoped. They had a narrow window now though, and he intended to make the best of it…

Knowing he just announced himself as a target, Arman moves up to P14 and behind some cover.

Arman lands a Hold spell on the enemy cleric/standard bearer. It fails the hold spell DC gloriously, rolling a natural 1.

Kelith (Initiative 18): Without any sort of ranged weapon, Kelith considers his options for a moment. The prospect of engaging the frost giants gives him a tingle of anticipation, for he followed Kossuth the elemental God of Fire. So really, it was a professional responsibility. Knowing he did his best work up close, he had thought about challenging the Aurilite cleric to a duel. While that would have been deliciously dramatic, Arman’s spell seems to have tabled that idea for the moment and he was not overly interested in a similar duel with a frost giant. He reaches for his wand and feels a surge of power as his strength and agility increases thanks to the power of the spell. Taking a last look, he ducks behind the fallen boulders and out of sight to avoid the thrown boulders.

Buelyir (Initiative 17): Considering his actions for a moment, Buelyir flips open his duster and runs his hands along his clutch of wands before pulling out an obsidian covered one. He squints for a moment as he focuses his aim before he sends a sticky ball of webbing flying out towards the hobgoblins. It hits the ground and explodes in a cloud of webbing, trapping at least the front ranks of the enemy formation with the spell. It seems to have caught the more heavily armored hobgoblins as well.

“I’ll draw their attention, now ye focus on the giants! We can’t handle them both up close!” he yells to his group.

To that end, Buelyir does not retreat into cover. Instead he takes a step forward and draws his katana sword from the sheath on his back. The sound it makes as it is drawn is like a musical note, ringing through the cavern. Freed from its sheath, Buelyir wills the sword to life and holds it high. It blazes with an angry blue and red glow as it flares to life. The light is enough to make the area bright as daytime on the surface in the cavern for a moment.

One thing Buelyir could be sure about now was that he had their attention, for the giants and webbed hobgoblins roar in recognition of the challenge.

Buelyir hits with a web spell and moves up to R9.

Frost Giant 1 (Initiative 15): The first giant hefts a boulder from his bag and draws his massive arm back before hurling the heavy rock right at Talamir. The boulder is on a nearly flat trajectory at this range and it crashes on the ground with a loud bang just to Talamir’s right before rolling away into the gloomy darkness behind him.

Frost Giant 2 (Initiative 15): The second giant hurls his boulder at Talamir as well, who was one of the only targets not under cover yet. This boulder lands 10 feet in front of him and bounces off the stone floor and heads right at Talamir. The agile elf drops to his knees and twists away as the boulder bounces over his head and rolls away. If either rock had struck him, he shuddered to think the damage it would have caused to him but it would take a better throw than that to ever hit the elf.

Talamir (Initiative 11): Moving behind cover, Talamir quickly moves behind the rock cover before the giant’s boulders can start raining down again. He takes a moment to use his wand with its’ shield spell to better protect himself.

Flint (Initiative 7): The duergar shoulders his crossbow and looks down the sight at the human cleric that Arman had just ensorcelled and steadies him aim for a moment. He decides to move up behind cover (O12) and takes aim again from behind cover.

He should have taken the shot the first time, as his crossbow bolt strikes the enemy cleric square in the breast plate of his armor and the bolt caroms off it, spinning through the air.

“Damn magicked armor!” he swears, realizing his shot was wasted.

The Hobgoblin Formation: With the front ranks bound in the webs, for the moment, 10 hobgoblins break formation and move forward. They form 2 ranks of 5 now, ten feet to the left and away from the web. They take a look at their struggling brethren and make no move to assist them…

Taking the time to study the enemy's ranks cost him a few precious seconds, as the two giants began their barrage before Talamir could take cover. Regardless, his instincts and training took over automatically as he avoided the boulders and moved for a moment to a slightly safer location.

Activating the stored wand, the Elf peaked out at the results of the spells. The thick webbing should provide some cover against the giant on the left as he moved, he thought to himself. The three stronger looking hobgoblins had to deal with the web, the flag bearer as well if he managed to break the grip of the holding spell quickly enough; that left the giants as the primary threats for the moment... the other goblins did not concern him... for now.

He had no qualms about swiftly dealing with the held Aurilite, but the webbing... would be a problem. Perhaps the Kossuthan's reach weapon could do the job without forcing him to wade too deeply into the sticky mess.

There was one other option available as well to the Bladesinger, if Kelith did not wish to get near the webs. Whatever they decided, it would have to be quick.

Glancing about once more to make sure Arman was still invisible, Talamir took a deep breath and prepared to move out from behind the rock. He gave a searching glance towards Kelith as he asked,

"The flag bearer; your chain or my blade?"

Kelith's fiery red eyes seemed narrowed and focused on the paralyzed cleric. Stepping out from behind the boulder, he lowered his spiked chain for a moment as he spoke a word of command, stretching out his arms towards the sticky mass before him, as a cone of blazing fire burst from his magical gauntlets towards the web.

The flammable strands near him quickly caught on fire, and began to burn, creating a path through the web directly towards the Aurilite priest.

"He's mine,"

Move action, Kelith moves to L10, standard action activates his Gauntlets of the Blazing Arc, 15 foot cone in front of him. Web should burn within 1 round, every square that falls in the cone iirc (would do some dmg to anyone in that area normally but in this case I don't think it'll reach the aurilite; then there's that flag...)

The act of casting two of the more powerful spells that he knew, was already starting the strain on his body, and he knew that this was going to be an exhausting fight.

The Frost giants were the next problem. Getting the caster under a hold spell had worked, and he had overheard Kelith talking about going after him first. He would let that happen, and then he could start on the frost giants.

He was glad his invisible spell was still holding, and he pulled together the magic one more time, for a smaller, but effective spell non the less.

Taking a small bolt out of a pouch at his side, he pointed it at the giant nearest himself, and directed the energy he had gathered through it. "Saighead de aigéad..." he said the words quietly, and watched as a green bolt that looked like it was dripping paint, formed out of the bolt in his head, and continued onto the giant.

Battle 2 - Round 2:

DM Note: Please add a rock to anchor the web in E13.

Arman (Initiative 26) :

Behind the cloak of his invisibility spell, Arman takes an overly hasty aim at one of the giants. He sends a ball of acid sizzling towards the giant. Fortunately, it was a big target and hard to miss. The acid strikes the giant and immediately starts sizzling and popping on its armor, seeping through the chains and burning the giant. It howls in pain from the acid, but clearly it was not a fatal wound.

Arman inflicts 4 points of damage on Frost Giant 2.

Round 1/3

Note: Arman did cast Greater Invisibility during the last encounter, but it was effectively never used so I didn’t count it. In case anyone was wondering…

Kelith (Initiative 18)

Seeing the Aurilite cleric, Kelith knew he had to be the one to kill it. He moved forward and aimed his gauntlets and lowered towards the webbing. His gauntlets flashed and an arc of fire sprayed from them, igniting webbing and causing a squeal of pain from the hobgoblins. While Buelyir had just bound them, Kelith’s flames set the web burning. He hoped it would kill them, but the fire was its own reward.

Gesturing towards the cleric, Kelith announces “he’s mine” and prepares to advance into the burning web.

Kelith’s flames ignite the following area directly, I8 to I13, J9 to J12 and K10. All squares adjacent are hit are burned as well. This includes the square the Aurilite cleric/standard bearer is in, and he suffers 11 HP of fire damaged, increased due to his vulnerability to fire.

Tactical Note: If in range, Kelith can use his chain in a disarm to snatch the standard away with a normal role.

Buelyir (Initiative 17):

“What the hell? I just webbed them!” Buelyir curses as Kelith sets the web blazing. Shaking his head, he motions for them to take care of their side of the battlefield and advances towards the left. Still holding his sword, he moves to take on the group of hobgoblins and the frost giant. He isn’t close enough to directly attack them yet, but he pauses and readies for their onslaught. A throwing axe appears in his other hand off his belt loop and he gives it a heft as he looks at the ten hobgoblins.

“Not very good odds for them...” he notes.

Buelyir moves to L3.

Frost Giant 1 (Initiative 15): Buelyir’s frustrations aside, the burning web spell and its crawling flames serve to keep the frost giant from plowing through the web and towards Buelyir. The giant growls a command at the hobgoblins to move up and shoot the dwarf with the sword, and instead of advancing… it falls back 15 feet (map edge) and moves right 10 feet. A second boulder in hand, it pitches it in the air to test its heft before planting its foot and spinning around twice in a circle to build momentum. With a deafening yell, it heaves the stone high into the air and sends it flying towards Kelith.

The throw is accurate enough, this time. The boulder hits at Kelith’s feet with an ear splitting bang and bounces right back up at him. The lithe priest only has time to twist out of the way as the boulder glances his chest and rolls away swiftly into the darkness. Had his reaction been a tick slower than it was, he would have taken the boulder square in the chest.

The giant rolls a 21 on its boulder throw.

Frost Giant 2 (Initiative 15):

Having been stung by Arman’s acid, it grimaces as the acid stings it but truthfully… it was not overly bothered by it at this point. Unable to see its own attacker, it debated what to do. A mage was dangerous, but the spell caster had hardly hurt it either. It also did not want to get close to the burning web, just like its brethren. Hating fire more than any other thing, it too took a boulder in hand. The giant spun in place and heaved a 50 lbs stone over the web and right at Kelith…

Unfortunately, he did not heave it hard enough and the boulder hit the web instead and stuck there like a captured bug.

“Gahhh!” the giant raged at its luck.

Talamir (Initiative 11): Talamir watches with curiosity as the veiled Arman throws a blob of acid at the hulking frost giant and wonders if his plan is to irritate the giant.

Regardless of what the other elf was doing, Talamir knew what he had to do now that Kelith had went recklessly after the enemy cleric. He needed to make sure that banner was taken out of play. Even if the cleric went down, someone else could pick it up and since the cleric was currently, completely, stunned he needed to do it now.

With the protection of his spells, Talamir climbs up the rubble and springs as far as he can. He must have caught his toe or his footing must have been off though, as he only jumps 10 feet and nearly knocks Kelith over.

He lands with an irritated snort and moves to the side of Kelith.. Not quite what was planned, but good enough.

Flint (Initiative 7): Not having a clear shot at anyone else, Flint winched his crossbow back in a hurry and loaded another bolt. Distracted by the fire in the gloom of the Underdark, it takes his eyes a moment to adjust. He sweeps the line looking for a target and shrugs as he settles on the second frost giant.

“Guess yer my huckleberry, big fella” he says and squints one eye to look down the site. He pulls the trigger and the latch drops, sending another steel bolt on a flat arc. This time, it is towards a much larger giant.

His bolt is aimed at its throat, but hits its chest instead. This time, the bolt pierces the armor and sinks into its chest. Hardly a lethal wound, but it stings the giant well enough…

Flint’s bolt does 7 HP to Frost Giant 2.

Hobgoblin Command Group: The two sergeants and their lieutenant watch the web burning in front of them. From their perspective, it seems like a wide area is on fire. They certainly were not going to rush into a fire, so they tried to force their way backwards. Unfortunately, the first sergeant cannot get free and neither can his lieutenant. The second sergeant, however, does manage to fall back to F12.

The Hobgoblin Formation 1 (10/10): None of the hobgoblins can escape the mass of webbing or even budge it. They struggle frantically in the web as the fire crawls towards them, and are in a near state of panic.

The Hobgoblin Formation 2 (10/10): The hobgoblins advance 10 feet, and have javelins in hand. Each seemed to be carrying a pair of the iron tipped javelins attached to their broad shields. They step forward and hurl their javelins into the air at the lone Buelyir and hope for the best.

Fortunately, he was a lone target against volley fire and that made him hard to hit. Two of the javelins hit each other in the air and fell to the ground in a clatter, but the rest of the ragged through arced through the air as Buelyir watched. He knew this had been coming when he moved forward and used himself as bait…

A sweep of his sword splits one of the missiles, but the rest land around him and one hits him squarely in the belly. The javelin sticks deeply into his armor and he feels the heavy, barbed thing stick in his belly painfully. It never made it past the muscle, but it hurt like hell and he now had several pounds of javelin hanging out of his armor… A second hit his leg and hung in his leg painfully.

Removing the javelin will take a move equivalent action for Buelyir.

One of the hobgoblins rolled a 20 on his throw, and another a 19. They hit for 6 and 5 HP respectively.

Hobgoblin Cleric: Try as he might, the cleric is still in a mental lock thanks to Arman's spell.

The cleric rolls a 15 v. Arman's spell and fails to escape it.

Talamir assessed the situation quickly: he was rather surprised, and slightly dismayed, at the choices of Kelith and Arman. The Kossuthan's reaction to the Aurilites was understandable perhaps, but the Elf could not help wandering if the decision to burn the web was tactically sound... he knew web could burn rather quickly, doing some damage but also freeing up those stuck within.

... though the caster was invisible he could clearly hear the arcane syllables and recognize the spell.

Interesting choice... thought the Elf, and said nothing. He didn't expect the conjured arrow to do much to the giant, and hoped the elven Faern was saving his best.

Seeing the giants drop back and continue to hurl stones made him frown; even with the cover of the web and aiming for a target so close to their own allies, one stone came too close to striking Kelith; the Kossuthan had left himself alone and exposed in his zeal to strike a mortal blow to the banner bearer. And now Beulyir was drawing the attention of the hobgoblins. In spite of a couple of lucky (or unlucky) throws, Talamir was willing to bet the strange and worldly dwarf could handle himself against the rabble.

http://img706.imageshack.us/img706/7632/talamirs.png

"If Beulyir is right, the banner..." the Elf spoke quietly, so that only those near him could hear, immediately moving to clamber up and over the rock, moving swiftly as he called to Kelith.

"We must get to him while he's paralyzed... for either the Banner or the killing stroke."

Talamir however wasn't sure of Kelith's priorities at the moment, and decided to call on his training once more as he moved into position and suddenly leapt towards the Banner bearer.

Using move action 30 feet to move to M10 (rocks require climb check DC 10 and difficult terrain cost per DM)
Climb skill +10, auto success unless we use critical failure for skillchecks...
Using Sudden Leap maneuver to jump towards the Banner bearer as Swift action... Let's see how far he gets!

Ok so it was more of a hop than a leap... lol. He'd end up in Kelith's square, but since he can't end movement in square occupied by non helpless creature, I'll use up Standard action (used Move to climb to M10, Swift to jump via Sudden Leap) to move out of there to L11.

Talk about a botched/wasted opportunity!

Perhaps his foot caught on a stone, or his legs were slightly fatigued from the quick clamber over the rock? The elf lands nearly on top of Kelith, just managing to step to the side to avoid a collision...

He lets out an annoyed snort.

With the last frost giant down, Nega and Wyatt are free of that engagement and must re roll initiative. Considering the change in the battle at this point, going to reroll initiative for all…

Initiative
Thordek: 26
Nalrak: 18
Hjalmar: 17
Arumfaerwed: 17
Aurilite Wizard: 16
Wyatt: 16
Magnum: 13
Grathalmor: 11
The Guardian: 10
Nega: 10
Duergar Flame Throwers: 08

Thordek: Empowered by spells and motivated by Magnum’s song, Thordek continues to lay into the wizard’s powerful guardian. He summons a powerful electrical spell and feels its intense power make his arm throb in pain from the spell’s energy. Thordek channels the spell into his axe and it leaps with electricity and swings it hard at the guardian. At least electricity seemed to stun it, and the adamantine axe certainly cut through it. If they couldn’t kill it, they would hack it to pieces.

The hit lands solidly and the axe cuts deeply before the electricity discharges in a brilliant flash of light that surprised even Thordek. Bits of armor go flying and the guardian is jolted by the hit. Blue liquid oozes from the wound…

The hit does 34 HP to the guardian and it seemed to feel that hit…
Thordek thinks for a moment and tries to determine what his foe actually was. It seemed vulnerable to electricity, but that could just be the metal suit. That the blood was blue and shimmered indicated an extreme amount of arcane energy in the things blood. He decided it was at least a partial construct, or a spirit bound to a metal shell. Or some kind of elemental bound to a shell. Which would make it a golem. Yet it was intelligent. What was it?

Nalrak: Seeing that Carmard was down, Nalrak was torn on what to do so he compromised. He took a powerful swing at the guardian, but his hammer did little more than mark the thing’s rigid armor. Seeing that Thordek and Hjalmar were being much more effective, Nalrak fell back 20 feet towards Carmard’s position and trusted that Nega would see to Buna.

Hjalmar: In close proximity to the guardian, Hjalmar pounded on the thing with a fury. His hammer rang once, splitting the creature’s armor along the side, although the next did not seem to cause as much damage.

Hjalmar lands one blow squarely enough to cause 16 HP damage to the guardian…

Arumfaerwed: Sensing it was now or never, Arum used one of his last spells to drill three bolts of energy into the wizard’s guardian instead of attacking the wizard directly.

The three bolts strike for a total of 13 HP of potential damage…

The Wizard: Seeing the vicious little halfling, the wizard considered simply obliterating him but decided he was no real threat to hit the main concentration of dwarves instead. He conjured a great sphere of cold and ice and sent it hurtling towards the concentration of dwarves pounding on its guardian. Surely the spell would engulf his own minion, but the cold seemed not a concern to the Aurilites…

A freezing sphere of ice the size of a beer keg whistled down through the air and exploded on contact with the towering guardian and exploded with a bang loud enough to leave ears ringing. The cold that followed was positively hypothermic…

Thordek – 14 damage – After Resist Energy spell, fails reflex
Magnum – 17 damage – Makes reflex save, but critically wounded! 5 HP left
Hjalmar – 34 damage – Fails reflex save, now seriously wounded 28 HP
Wizard Guardian – 0 HP – It rather enjoyed it…

Wyatt: Turns out that ignoring the halfling may not have been such a good idea afterall. Unable to do much of anything else, Wyatt decided to throw a tanglefoot bag at the wizard. Wyatt lofts the bag with ease and sends it flying up at the unsuspecting wizard. When the bag hit his chest, it burst open and sticky strands of a glue like substance immobilized him completely, as he sat in the air. While it may have cost less than the wizard’s gilded slippers, the tanglefoot bag had immobilized the wizard. Of course, that was a relative thing whilst one was flying, but it was out of the spell casting game for awhile...

Magnum: Having got the worst of the wizard’s spell, Magnum reeled from the wound, the cleric cuts into the wizard’s guardian with two more deep, brutal blows. They cut in deep and the thing twists in pain or at least physical shock from the blow. His axe comes out wet with the blue, glowing blood of the creature upon it….

Magnum lands two powerful blows, hitting for a total of 48 HP damage.

Yet the wizard’s construct still persists, if barely…

Grathalmor: The Sworn Shield rushes to the aid of the fallen Carmard, who is struggling uselessly against the pressure of the a literal hand made of force pushing him down into the ground… He struggles with it and even swings at it, but to no avail for the moment… He grimaces through the pain and continues to blast his Ehontar song to give every last moment of support he could, if that was all he had left.

The Wizard’s Guardian: Unshaken by the powerful spell its master had just aimed at it, the creature tensed a moment and drew its arms tighter to its chest and prepared a sprinter’s stance… and then it half floated, half vaulted over the dwarves. Mid arc, its greatsword appeared again and it landed with a thunder clap of sound, followed by a loud bang as sword bit into stone.

No one has time to do anything but be astonished at the swiftness of the move.

The guardian’s sword had severed Carmard’s leg below the knee, and it would have been worse if not for the dwarf’s last second dodge under the oppressive weight of the wizard’s spell.

“No!” cries Grathalmor as the Guardian maims Carmard.

Leg separated, blood pours from the wound as Carmard bites back a scream…

The Guardian rolled a 20 and a 16, not quite a beheading but a maiming…

Nega: Rushing to help the downed and dying Buna, Nega immediately presses her hand to the fallen Arcanii and lets the healing energies push through her in a bid to save her before it is too late. The spell is enough to awaken her , and she looks around at the devastation of the battlefield. The bloody battle in the center and the equally bloody one she had been a part of, here in the center.

“Berronar, save us all…” Buna mutters in shock.

Duergar Flamethrowers: Out of position, they move closer to the wizard and prepare to roast him if given half a chance…

Wyatt

Wyatt pumped a fist when he saw his tanglefoot bag hit the mark. "Good hands, dummy," he taunted as the goo splattered all over the wizard. It wasn't the most conventional of attacks, but it seemed to be effective. The wizard would have a difficult time freeing himself from the goop and he would have a hard time hurting anybody else for a while.

Unfortunately, Wyatt's brief victory became overshadowed by what happened next.

The guardian seemed to just fling itself past the assaulting dwarves, and delivered a brutalizing attack to the vulnerable Carmard. Wyatt's little eyes go wide as Carmard's leg below the knee is chopped right off. "CARMARD!" Wyatt shouted out as he saw the gruesome scene. "Damnit... if only I got him sooner..."

Wyatt slumped a little in defeat, but he looked back up at the guardian, narrowing his eyes a bit, gritting his teeth and regaining his resolve. It was now or never, he decided, as he clenched his weapon, turning on his feet to get on the move again. He watched the movements of the dwarves carefully, waiting for his chance...

He looked toward the wizard and then at the flamethrower duergar and got an idea, but the guardian was top priority. His feet whirled underneath him in a flurry of motion as he made his decision...

I have two scenarios planned out for this round.

First of all, delay my turn until just before the guardian acts, if it's still standing by the time Wyatt's turn comes up. I am really hoping someone else can take that thing out so I don't have to. This changes my initiative to 11, acting directly after Grathalmore and right before the guardian. Apparently my turn is set after the wizard's anyway, so I can't do anything for that. If the guardian is destroyed by Magnum or Grathalmore (who act after Wyatt normally would, but before the guardian) while Wyatt is delaying, immediately undelay at the end of that character's turn and take his turn then. Here is my battle plan.

Scenario A: Guardian still alive. If the guardian is still alive and nobody else is left to attack it, Spring Attack on the guardian. Move in such a way to get a flanking attack with anybody who happens to be in melee with the guardian before Wyatt's turn comes up. After the attack, move as far away from the guardian as possible with remaining movement, preferably putting a dwarf between himself and the guardian if at all possible.

Attack: [roll0] (-2 if a flank is not possible)
Damage: [roll1] + [roll2] acid
Skirmish, if it even applies: [roll3]

AC: 34

Scenario B: Guardian is destroyed. If the guardian is destroyed before Wyatt's turn comes up, move my full 40 feet, draw an oil flask and use my above attack roll against the wizard instead, before the duergar flamethrowers attack. It would be a touch attack instead, minus ranged penalties.

Blue and red, white and gold; all overshadowed by a deep brown was about all Magnum could see. The blue dominated his fury and focused his energy while the red inspired his song into deeper, painful effort. Figures moved in and out of his vision, all barely registered beyond being no threat; sufficient to continue. Harm he had suffered was near divine, not in any masochistic fashion, but rather as part of the feelings one experienced in battle.

Magnum was not about to allow such a feeling to flee so fleetingly, nor back down in what he sensed was the end of an extended fight. Joined by his allies, bolstered by his song, he growled loudly at the icy pain and ground out another verse of his Ehontar while attacking the guardian; death or victory, whichever came first!

Arman was dismayed at his spell. It had worked before to much greater effect. The only thing he was happy about was the fact that it would continue to spit out acid at the giant for a minute or so.

Centering himself a bit more, he began to move his hands and drawing yet more energy in. He had wanted to save this for a while, but, he also wanted this particular fight to end faster so they could meet with the other group and help them.

Gathering more energy than the last spell, he took a few components and crushed them in his hand together, point with his other hand at the group of hobgoblins.

"Liathróid de tine" He watched as a small point of orange light streaked towards the hobgoblins, growing ever larger in size as it drew nearer, and showing the hobgoblins their fate.

Battle 2 - Round 3:

OOC: Dead enemies will be black with white lettering for one round before being removed from the map for clutter's sake. Spell effects (such as the fireball) will also disappear on subsequent rounds.

Arman (Initiative 26) :

Digging around in his spell compenent pouch, Arman feels the telltale squish of bat guanno and the acrid smell of sulfur as he pulls the two ingredients out and smashes them together. His incantation sets the small clump alight as it goes flying towards the second formation of hobgoblins. A half-second before the spell detonates there is the hissing sound of air being sucked towards the blast point, almost like the gasp of some great beast. The roiling wave of fire catches the majority of the hobgoblins off guard and blasts them off their feet. Even the select few who are able to bring their shields up to protect themselves are overwhelmed by the force of Arman's magic. Though the frost giant is able to bring his hands up against the blast, the searing magical fire causes it to cringe under the burning wave.

Arman inflicts either 29 or 14 damage to the hobgoblins, killing all of them. Frost Giant 1 takes 21 damage from the fireball due to it passing its reflex save but being vulnerable to fire. The sizzle of the acid arrow does an additional 5 damage to Frost Giant 2.

Acid Arrow Round 2/3

Kelith (Initiative 18)

Having no fear of the fire that creeps along the webbing, the favored soul of Kossuth steps towards the cleric, drawing his chain from about his waist. The chain whips out and wraps itself around the enemy's standard. The cleric is still bound by the spell and barely puts up a fight at the flame worshiper gives the chain a yank and sends the standard sailing back towards him. Dropping the chain from one hand, he deftly catches the standard as smoke from the burning webrises about him.

Kelith successfully disarms the hobgoblin cleric and manages not to mess up catching the standard. The flames of the spell creep along the web, burning the cleric (19 damage), his sergeant (13 damage), and his lieutenant (13 damage).

Buelyir (Initiative 17):

With his intended targets now smoldering on the ground and a frost giant ready to bear down on him alone, Buelyir turns and hustles towards Talamir, yanking the javelins out of his body as he does so. Though he is sorely tempted to charge straight towards the waiting Frost Giant, the extra few seconds for his alies to unload their spells proves too enticing.

Buelyir moves to L10.

Frost Giant 1 (Initiative 15):

With its minions now dead and its skin singed from the fireball, the giant roars in frustration and goes bounding towards Buelyir. As it moves towards him it leaps over the rubble and lands deftly on its feet, closing the remaining distance and getting right into Buelyir's and Talamir's faces.

Frost Giant 1 moves and jumps, ending up in K5-6,L5-6.

Frost Giant 2 (Initiative 15):

Cursing its luck, the giant hefts another great stone and tries once again to hit the fire-wielding man standing amungst the flames. This time the Giant's aim proves more true as the stone comes crashing down on top of Kelith. The favored soul manages to turn his body just in time to lessen the damage somewhat, but the boulder still smashes into his flank, knocking the wind from his lungs and spinning him halfway about. Fortunately, he keeps his grip on both the standard and his chain

The Frost Giant rolls a 27 against Kelith and hits for 15 damage

Talamir (Initiative 11):

Talamir moves in to aid the beleaguered Buelyir, tumbling out of the way of the giant's axe as he does so. Unfortunately, doing so means he cannot attack this round but is able to flank the giant.

Tumbling to avoid an AoO means you move at half speed. Your first movement ends in the giant's threatened square so you use your tumble then. Your second movement you don't need to move at half speed so you get all the way behind the giant.

Flint (Initiative 7):

Quickly reloading his crossbow, the rogue once again takes aim at the second of the Frost Giants. This time his bolt flies true, striking the giant square in the neck and puncturing clean through. A spray of blood flies into the air as the bolt punches through muscle and flesh. Though the shot is expertly placed, the giant proves to be a resilient foe indeed. Had it been a smaller creature, it would surely have choked to death on its own blood. However, due to its size, the shot is not lethal.THough the wound bleeds freely, the giant continues its attack, barely seeming to notice.

Flint’s scores a confirmed critical hit against Frost Giant 2 for 18 damage.

Hobgoblin Command Group:
All three of the commanders fight against the web to get away from the flames. The first sergeant and lieutenant are unable to escape from the flaming netting, though next round the webbing will be burned off their square entirely. The second sergeant merely struggles feebly against the cloying webbing

The Hobgoblin Formation 1 (10/10):
Again none of the hobgoblins are able to break free of the webbing. Their grunts of anger and frustration become increasingly paniced as the flames inch ever closer to their position.

The Hobgoblin Formation 2 (0/10):
All dead!

Hobgoblin Cleric:
Again the cleric's willpower proves too weak to overcome the spell gripping it in place.

Talamir round 3:

Seeing the giant leap towards the lone Buelyir, Talamir shifted his focus, moving quickly to try and flank. Lowering his left hand onto the ground for support, Talamir does a half somersault and tumbles to attempt to avoid giving the giant any openings.

Gathering his feet under him, the Elf sings a battle cry in Elven as he strikes at the Frost Giant*.

Aurilite Wizard: 16
Wyatt: 16
Magnum: 13
Grathalmor: 11

Thordek: Having been rocked by the wizard’s spell, Thordek tries to finish the contest with another spell of scorching fire. One ray goes wide and blasts into the darkness with no effect, but his second ray blasts the wizard squarely in the chest. The already badly wounded wizard shrieks in pain as the fire rakes over him. He tumbles from the sky and lands with a thud, his cloak smoldering and his face badly charred by the spell.

Nalrak: Seeing Carmard wounded so badly, Nalrak curses that he did not rush to his side the moment he fell from the air. Who would have expected what the guardian had just done though? Raising his hammer high above his head, he screams and charges at the guardian with a bold, if reckless charge.

The guardian senses his approach and holds its sword low and swings it hard at Nalrak’s torso, just as Nalrak swings. While the dwarf’s swing rings off of solid armor to no effect, the guardian’s heavy falchion is more effective. Nalrak grunts from the blow and looks down to see his thick plate armor has been cleaved open and feels a searing pain from the painful wound. Blood gushes from the wound, but the solid dwarf’s enhanced fortitude keeps him on his feet…

The Wizard’s Guardian hits Nalrak and scores a critical, but fails to maim him. 34 HP damage.

Hjalmar: Seeing how the guardian had opened up Nalrak, it does nothing to deter Hjalmar on his own charge. Unlike Nalrak though, Hjalmar used a shield and charged with it held tightly and out in front of him. The Guardian’s sword hits Hjalmar’s shield with a bang, but the dwarf’s feet keep churning and it does not slow his charge much at the last moment. He puts his momentum behind his swing and hits the towering guardian in the side. It’s armor lurches from the blow and caves in somewhat. At this point, he doubted any armorer could repair that armor but the creature inside it seemed alive and well.

The eye slits blaze blue once again, as its armored face looms over Hjalmar. He supposed he hurt it, but he was quite sure he had got its attention.

Arumfaerwed: Almost out of magic, Arum unlimbers his crossbow. The heavy crossbow took a moment to load and he grabbed a bolt from a clip on his saddle and began winding the crossbow. Magic may not work too well against the Guardian, but a crossbow bolt might…

The Wizard: Now in the smoking section. Please enjoy your evening…

Wyatt: With the guardian still alive, Wyatt swallows his fear of the thing and runs in towards the guardian. As he runs by it, he swings his bat at the guardian’s knee. He may as well have hit a tree trunk, for how solid the thing felt. Still, his acid sizzled and scoured its armor fairly well…

Than he gets the hell out of its way, moving as far away from it as he could! He had no desire to get paralyzed by its gaze…

Wyatt inflicts 4 hp on the guardian, 2 from acid…

Magnum: Bolstered by the last of his divine empowerment, Magnum watches the guardian swing at both Nalrak and Hjalmar and probably wound both of them. Whatever else the thing was, it had a deadly quickness to it. Knowing his charge might be the last thing he ever did, Magnum charged as well, roaring a ballad and axe ready to strike the final blow as he thundered towards the guardian.

He watched it’s helmet swing towards his direction and draw its sword up to prepare for a swing. The things sword was dripping with the blood of his friends, and so large, curved and deadly. Counting on his shield, Magnum held it out of his field of vision until the creature swung its terrible sword and sent his own shield flying out to meet it. His shield connected and drove the sword off course, and it gave Magnum the opening he needed. He drove forward, ducked low and used his weight and momentum to send his axe crunching into the hateful things armor. The axe cleaved through its already damaged armor and sunk deeply into its torso. He was rewarded with a wet crunch as his axe finally got deep enough to hit something important and the creature groaned.

Groaned?

His axe caught in the armor, Magnum thinks of letting it go for a moment until the thing staggers and topples over backwards on to the ground. The huge thing’s fall, however, is atop the already badly wounded Carmard and the dwarf groans from the weight of the enemy’s carcass…

The Rest…

Seeing the creature fall, Grathalmor immediately swings at the fallen creature’s head with his urghosh repeatedly. Each blow crunches the helmet until it finally splits and he drives his axe into the thing’s skull, if there really was one under there.

Nega quickly comes as well, to attend to the fallen Carmard and glances at him quickly. Clearly, his leg was severed and lost. Blood pumps from his femoral artery, squirting blood a remarkable distance from the stump as Carmard’s pounding heart expedites him bleeding to death. She quickly attends to that problem and lays her palm on his bloodied leg.

When she reaches for him she says: Swear an oat(h) to Berronar and me to save yer life! She then presses her hand towards him while holding the mace in it and whispers: "Wit(h) dis oat(h) (h)e will swear I bind (h)is life to mine, Berronar (h)ear dis and grant me da strengt(h) to defend dy c(h)ildren."

Nega’s palm glows a golden hue for a moment and what healing energy she has left flows into Carmard and seals the wound. At least he would not bleed to death, but there was nothing to be done for the blood loss itself, she knew.

She takes a step back as Nalrak and Grathalmor drag the Guardian’s carcass off of Carmard and heave it unceremoniously away from Carmard.

With the carcass of their foe removed, Nega notices that the wizard’s spell has faded and he is no longer being crushed into the ground by the spell. The gigantic hand that had snatched him from the air fades from existence…

A moment later, Nega finds Nalrak crouching down next to Carmard and looking at the wound. His gauntlets are off and battered helmet is sitting next to him. He glances at the stump and the severed leg and grimaces, knowing that the healing would do little to stop the kind of pain the Arcanii must be experiencing. Having trained for years with the Silver Knightingales of Sunderhelme, Nega would know Nalrak was well trained in medicine and advanced healing, but all he could do was shake his head.

“How ya feeling, Carmard?” Nalrak asks him quietly.

The Arcanii looks down at his missing leg and grimaces.

“I’ve been better, yerself?” is his reply. Then his head lolls back as he struggles with consciousness from the shock.

Flint:

"Oi, guess ye got that giant's attention now, didn't ye Buelyir?" Flint notes as he winds back the windlass on his crossbow to ready his next shot.

Trusting that Buelyir knows what he is doing, he takes aim again at the giant he had just wounded. He decides to stay focused on what he was doing, and someone should probaby protect the crippled elf he decided. Why their mage just shot someone with his puny elf bow was beyond him, though.

Once again, Flint fires and sends a bolt zinging towards the frost giant. This one strikes as well, and he hits it in the belly this time. Hardly enough to kill it, one more wound would make it easier to finish though.

Flint inflicts 7 HP on Frost Giant 2.

Wyatt

Wyatt's strike was successful... marginally. He could not find a weak point in the thing's armor, and deduced it wasn't a living thing. Either that, or it was a living thing incased in so much armor that not even his keen eyes could find the weak spot. Still, he managed to lay a little dent in its armor, but that was it.

He turned around at the end of his run, and saw Magnum fell the beastly guardian. The collapse of the monster caught him off guard - the guardian fell with a crash, on top of poor Carmard, and Wyatt stumbled a bit from the resounding commotion. He got steady on his feet quickly, though, and dashed back toward the others, stumbling a bit and almost falling over in his rush, falling forward a bit but catching himself with his hand and getting back up to run proper.

He arrives soon enough, skidding to a stop on his feet. "Damn... how did we all make it through 'dat alive? 'dat guardian... what was it? Well... it might not matter now." He looks at Carmard a bit sadly. "'dis is bad... what're we supposed to do now?"

As he ponders that exact question, his eyes go wide for a moment and he winces. "Ah, hell... Buelyir and the others never caught up with me and Sable! Somethin' musta intercepted 'dem behind us..." He points back at the direction from which he and Sable came from. "We came from 'dat way, but nobody looks to be in fighting shape at the moment..."

He inspected his own wounds - some bits of himself that had been damaged by the wizard's early cold spell stung a bit, but it wasn't anything a few light healing spells or potion couldn't fix. The damage was mitigated for the most part thanks to his pre-emptive use of an Aid potion that helped absorbed the damage. He reached for a pair of potion vials on his belt, looking at them for a moment, as if contemplating something, but he holds them out to the dwarves instead, picking out someone who looks the most wounded - aside from Carmard, whom he knows regular healing cannot fix - particularly looking toward Magnum and his critically injured state. "Look, I know I'm no healer or anythin', but I gotta offer what I can to help. Someone put 'dese to use.... and 'den I gotta go back for Buelyir and the others."

He puts his mace away for a moment, to take out another potion with his free hand, uncorking it with his thumb and quickly chugging the contents while he waited for someone to accept/decline his offer, all the while glancing about and wondering where his partner in crime disappeared to...

Wyatt offers two of his Cure Moderate Wounds potions to the most wounded ally (probably Magnum, with his 5 hit points remaining), and uses one of his Cure Light Wounds potions, healing either the minimum value or [roll0] hit points.

Buelyir:

The jumping frost giant certainly took him by surprise. While he had hoped to keep it occupied and away until the rest could be dealt with and he had to face it now.

He turns and squares off against the giant, but immediately slides into a guarding stance with his razor sharp katana. Ready to fight defensively, Buelyir feints with a swing at the giant's left knee but its a short swing. The giant moves to try and block a blow that was never completed!

Instead, Buelyir reverses himself and spins around in a flashing arc and connects with the giant's side instead. The blow finds a seam and cuts deeply, splitting metal and flesh with equal ease. As the sword connects, the sword flashes in a brilliant burst of energy that lights up the darkness and a booming sound causes ears to ring, for the sound is like a massive anvil being struck and the ring of metal.

Buelyir yanks the blade free and returns to his guarding stance and falls back five feet.

"Come on, big fella!" he taunts the frost giant. He glances towards Talamir to see what the elf is going to do.

Buelyir's katana hits for 16 HP. He beat the giant with his feint, rolling a 28 v. 22 and turns the attack into a sneak attack. That inflicts an additional 15 HP damage.

The sword also made its percentage check for effect, and caused a loud booming sound and inflicted 20 HP lightning damage.

Total giant damage is 51 HP.

As the guardian fell Magnum used the motion to assist in jerking his axe free, but not without a groan of his own. Grunting as thing fell on Carmard, he looked around for other foes. Seeing none, he let slip the divine enhancement of the Ehontar and sheathed his axe as the Divine Power faded.

Glancing around at the others he saw Nega approach Carmard, knowing she could likely save his life. Though the pain of his own onerous wounds nagged him, his primary concern was Nalrak. Even as Wyatt approached, the Alaghor pulled out some potions of his own and listened closely to Nega and Carmard. Drinking one he handed two potions to Nalrak, “A fittin’ cheers ta a hard won victory!”

Accepting Wyatt’s offer, Magnum knelt by Carmard. Turning his head this way and that to catch more of the distant sound of battle he said, “Alas commander, no chance fer regeneratin’ dat leg right now. But sounds like more fightin’s ta be done.”

Standing again he used his last spell to cure more of his wounds, then honed in on the sounds of fighting. Something deep inside urged him to make a battlefield command decision as he stated plainly and without hesitation or doubt of any kind, “We need ta join da fight. Whoever’s still able, join me!”

Drinking the other potions of healing on the way, Magnum made his way toward the sound of battle.

With Carmard drifting in and out of consciousness due to the shock of his wound still, Nalrak frowns as he looks at his crippled leader. It had been his charge to protect him and he had not been there. Of course, Carmard fought like a bird so it made it hard to actually be there for him all the time, but the injury still shamed him. He shares a look of disappointment with Grathalmor and sighs heavily.

“When he comes ‘round some more, he’s going to be in an awful pain and modest spells only go so far with this kind o’thing” he says and pauses.

“Question be, do we give’em something for the pain?” Nalrak asks and withdraws a vial from the medical kit he has laid on the ground. It is a white fluid that sloshes a bit in its flask.

“Milk of the poppy?" Grathalmor asks, and frowns. “That’ll leave him unconscious or delirious. I think ye should ask’em what he wants when he comes ‘round. We may not be able to use’em in a fight now but we’ll still need’em”

Nalrak shrugs and looks around.

“So who’s even in charge now?” Nalrak asks and looks at Thordek with an incredulously raised eyebrow. The Levtokuld is looting the fallen mage, its separated head laying a few feet away. Wyatt swigged one last minor potion before redrawing his mace and heading off toward Buelyir's fight. He glanced around one more time, though, muttering, "Sable... where did you go? You better be alright..."

In the center of the battlefield, the main battle continues.

The hobgoblin army is pressed on the flank by the mercenaries, minotaurs and the merciless Tasster. They have been driven back far enough that the duergar have joined the battle from the front and the enemy has fallen back.

A trail of bodies lay on the ground now, dead and cripplied, including dozens of hobgoblins, but also some of the duergar, mercenaries and one of Tasster's sons. Gore has fallen out of the fight as well, but Kerik continues to battle against a pair of frost giants and appears to be holding his own. The two minotaurs that had carried the Stoneburner case has set it down near their position and have joined the fight as well.

As Wyatt, Magnum and whomever else go see two robed figures laying face down on the ground. One has an arrow in the back of his head. The other a slice across his neck going very deep. Once in the blue and white robes of Auril, they lay in a wide pool of blood. Their assailant is nowhere to be seen.

To the left, Bundok and Duervar continue to fight while Nega, Grathalmor and Nalrak stay behind with Carmard and a rattled Buna plus anyone who stayed behind. Using an opening, the two duergar with the flame throwers move up besides the two beleagured dwarves and send long tongues of flame into a howling mass of hobgoblins, pushing them away from the dwarves.

They offer their thanks and fall back towards Grathalmor, Nalrak and Nega...

"Why don't ye come take of me too, Nalrak. Have a care for the women folk here too, aye? Maybe they'd like a big, handsome dwarf to minister to them too." Buna says, actually winking at Nalrak.

Thordek paws throught the Aurilite wizard's equipment to see if he finds anything useful. He had certainly taken a pounding, and the fire attacks had ruined much of its robe. Much of the rest of its equipment seems intact...

Unidentified Cloak
Unknown Cold Cube - Cold to the touch
Ice Storm Scroll
A very nice scarf
Diamond Ear Rings (100 GP)
An Ice Pick with runes on it
Boots of the Winterlands
Small sack of gems (2000 gp)
Unknown Rod
2 x CSW
Scroll - Protection from Energy
Wizard Book with all spells

He also goes through the wizard guardian's things, and there is not much. The only thing of value left with it appears to be its sword...

1 Large Falchion with runes on it.

The giants each bear a +1 greataxe and magicked half plate armor as well, which the minotaurs could use but they probably had better gear already, which makes up most of their treasure.

Thordek is able to collect an additional 1000 gp in gems from their giant bags.

As Thordek is gathering what he can from the fallen enemy before the mercenaries pick them clean, he looks over to his far left and sees fires burning from inside a stockade. Workshops line the walls in that distant area, along with wagons of what is presumably ore. A series of great smelters sit there as well. It would seem the area is at least A source of the Aurilite weapons.

When the door swings open to the stockade, Thordek sees a ragged column walk out it. He guesses it must be around 75 to 150 people, and they're headed in his direction. Moments later, they break into a dead run...

Wyatt shrugged a bit with a smile at Magnum. "Stirrin' up trouble is what I do best! As if you didn't know 'dat I am the biggest troublemaker 'dis side of Faerun," he says with a grin. "But seriously, at 'dis point I gotta help Buelyir and the rest. I'll worry about how the chain of command works later, after I've bludgeoned more giants in the face."
Magnum nodded once, seemingly serious, but a scoff of humor escaped his beard before he replied gruffly, "Aye lad, Carmard's outta commission fer now, so we need ta find Buelyir. Time's drawin' near ta set off dat bomb, so we need ta reunite da two groups."

He shakes his head a little, and looks ahead, trying to make out what the happenings of the battle are from a distance with his keen eyes. "Anyway, I hope 'dey're not in too much trouble... 'dis is really the first time we've fought together on the front, you know? Most of the time I'm usually doing behind-the-scenes work with the other sneaks. But I fight up front too. Pick out a target, and I'll hassle 'em for ya."
Glancing back one last time to Carmard, he noticed Nega moving (toward us?). Speeding up his pace to a jog, the Alaghor replied with some bantering chatter, "I'd say dis be yer big chance, but it seems we'd be comin' in from da rear of da battle. So we'd be actin' behind da scene, so ta speak, ta open a second front of our own!"

He raises his buckler in front of him, tightening his grip on his bat and raising it into a striking position as he moves forward toward the battlefield. "Awright, let's do 'dis!"
Magnum nodded and chuckled at the scout, "Lead on, I'm right behind ya, ready ta bring more death ta da cold hearted enemy!"

"Hey, who did 'dis?" Wyatt asks, looking at the two Aurilite bodies they find. Suddenly it dawns on him. "Ah... heh... hmm. I think I have an idea, actually..." He simply leaves it at that, and continues ahead.

"What do you think, Magnum? We gotta pick someone to help around here..."
Magnum shrugged, knowing full well that Wyatt meant Sable, the one he was typically with 'behind the scenes'. "We go to aid Buelyir, he oughta know about Carmard."

Wyatt jogged on ahead, eager to rejoin Buelyir and company and to aid their struggle.

So Wyatt and Magnum are joining Buelyir's fight, providing it isn't over by the time they get there and we don't run into anything on the way. Just let us know when we can jump in!

Battle 2 - Round 4:

Arman (Initiative 26) :

Arman moves closer into range, drawing his bow as he does so. The spellbound cleric proves an easy mark and easily scores a hit, sinking an arrow into the hobgoblin's arm.

Arman inflicts 7 damage to the cleric. The sizzle of the acid arrow does 6 damage to Frost Giant 2 before its effect ends.

Kelith (Initiative 18):

With a solid *thud* the fire priest slams the standard into the ground, pinning it in his square. Twirling his chain about his head, he lashes out at the frozen cleric, raking his spiked chain across the hobgoblin's chest and opening a nasty gash. His fire continues to spread, engulfing the sergeant and lieutenant. The flames prove too much for the sergeant and the creature crumples to the ground.

Kelith plants his newly acquired standard and attacks the cleric, doing 9 damage with his spiked chain. The sergeants and lieutenant take 9 damage from the burning webs, taking out the sergeant who was already engulfed by the flames.

Buelyir (Initiative 17):

Buelyir feints the giant and the lumbering oaf bites, leaving itself open to his attack. The blade lets out a resounding boom as it releases its energy, doing additional damage to the giant and alerting the other group.

Buelyir hits for 51 HP and drops back to L8.

Frost Giant 1 (Initiative 15):

Roaring in pain and anger at Buelyir's devastating attack, the frost giant completely ignores Talamir to try and chop Buelyir in half. The blow strikes true, puncturing his mythral armor and opening a nasty gash across his shoulder.

The giant slashes Buelyir for 27 damage (already marked on his sheet)

Frost Giant 2 (Initiative 15):

Seeing no threats in the immediate area, the frost giant bounds towards the large rock formation, turning the corner and getting into Flint's face. Arman is able to move out of the way just in time to avoid being trampled by the Giant.

The Frost Giant double moves and ends up adjacent to Flint

Talamir (Initiative 11):

With the frost giant's back to him, the bladesinger has a chance to do some damage. He slashes twice at the creature's back, though the giant's armor proves too tough for the elf.

Talamir's attacks both fail to overcome the giant's AC.

Flint (Initiative 7):

Taken by surprise at the Frost Giant's approach, Flint fires and sends a bolt zinging towards it. The Duergar is able to dodge the giant's sloppy axe attack as he fires. This bolt strikes as well, and he hits it in the belly this time. Hardly enough to kill it, one more wound would make it easier to finish though.

Flint inflicts 7 HP on Frost Giant 2.

Hobgoblin Command Group:

With the webbing now burned off of him, the Lieutenant advances on Kelith with its greatsword held high. The sweeping arc of the blade catches Kelith squarely in the arm despite his efforts to dodge the blow. The remaining sergeant struggles against the burning webbing and manages to tear himself free, stepping into the smoldering ring of webbing and free of the cloying flames.

The lieutenant advances to I11 and rolls a 25 against Kelith's AC, dealing 18 damage. Sergeant 2 moves to G 12.

The Hobgoblin Formation 1 (10/10):

The ranks of stoic hobgoblins soldiers has degraded into a band of screaming lunatics. Again none of them are able to break free of the webbing and they watch in abject terror as death creeps slowly towards them.

Hobgoblin Cleric:

Finally breaking free of the Elf's spell, the hobgoblin cleric shakes his head as he regains control of his body. He sidesteps and begins to chant the incantations of a spell. Kelith lashes out at him with his chain but the lieutenant blocks his attack. Before your very eyes the cleric's wounds begin to stitch themselves together as his healing spell takes hold.

The hobgoblin frees himself from the spell and sidesteps to H11, casting a healing spell on himself. If you'd like, you can roll a spellcraft check to determine its potency.

Smarting from the wound, Buelyir decides it was time to play it a little safer and not get overconfident. He concentrates for a moment, and then suddenly he starts blinking in and out of view. He looks like he is blinking in and out of reality very quickly and at random.

"Hey, why don't ye try that one now, fella?" Bueylir asks the frost giant.

He moves closer and his blade flashes in three quick strokes, drawing an azure trail through the air with its passage. Apparently, Buelyir is quite a fast swordsmen indeed...

The first and third blows both connect, with a booming report once again. There seems to be no secondary effects this time, but the damage is significant enough as two tears in the giant's armor run red with blood.

Buelyir moves to L7 to provide a flanking bonus for Talamir and to get in range himself. The first blow connects for 11 HP and the second for 15 HP. Buelyir makes his miss chance check.

The giant now has to beat a 50% miss chance, thanks to Buelyir's spell.

With the approaching rush of humanity, those who stayed behind look it and try to determine who they are.

While Nalrak continues to talk to Carmard and dress his other wounds, Grathalmor takes a position by Thordek's side. A pistol, instead of an axe, is in his hand.

"Now what?" Grathalmor growls as he looks at the crowd. They all appear to be armed, but either bare chested or wearing rags.

Buna staggers over as well and looks ahead, still dazed, but somewhat functional.

"Say the word, and I'll put a fireball into that swarm and cut it down to size" she says, watching the oncoming rush.

Nega and Hjalmar

The two veteran paladins move as quickly as their aching bodies and short legs allow. They too pass to the rear of the main battle. Two robed figures lay in a pool of blood with an arrow in the back of one's head and the throat slit on another. Clearly both sides have taken losses, but the Patriarchate forces seem to have the upper hand so far. Kerik seems to be engaged with two frost giants and is hard pressed, while the duergars and mercenaries push their foe back...

Judging from the light and sound, the others still remained far away.

Frost Giant 2 (Initiative 15):

Seeing a new target present itself, the second frost giant bounds forward towards Arman, drawing his axe as he approaches. The Giant brings its axe down in a great two-handed arc.

The Frost Giant rolls a 20 against Arman's AC (which I'm not sure of). If that hits, it does 23 damage.

Arman is still under the effect of Greater Invisibility, which lasts for 10 rounds I believe.

"Aye, I'll be ready. I've always wanted to see what a good fireball could do to that many in a pack" Buna says and smiles. It's a mildly disturbing aspiration.

As the group gets closer, Thordek stands alone in front of them and lifts the wizard's head up by his white, stringy hair. Few things command attention of an audience more than showing them someone's head, for the crowd comes to a halt 80 feet in front of Thordek.

"Halt!" he bellows at them as the group of ragged warriors comes to a stop. With a heave, he sends the wizard's head rolling towards the pack of humanoids and sits about 20 feet from their position.

The crowd does not react beyond murmurs and the crowd opens up to let someone pass. Out walks a dwarf with brightly colored armor and a short trimmed beard that looks familar to everyone.

He flashes a smile and bows politely to Thordek, sweeping the hat off his head and holding it to his chest as he bows. It was a bow that would impress any courtier.

"Ah, Levtokuld Thordek. Good to see you, mate!" he says and waves his hat at Thordek.

"I'd like you to meet my new friends. They were the slave miners here, and have a mind to quit this establishment. I am told the hours were long, food was poor and management was far too demanding, so they have decided it was time to move. I told them we were going their way and invited them to join up with us" he says and smirks.

"Seeing how we tend to travel with an army, be it dwarf or demonic hellhounds, they seemed to fit the tradition. So what say you? I assure you that they're all strong and most are trained to use sword and bow, if we can find any, though several are wounded. If our Alaghor and Silver Lady had a moment, some of my friends took some wounds on the way out"

"Frak, its Johannes. What'd he go off and do this time?" Buna curses under her breath. "How do we get them out and all o'us too before that thing goes off?"

Flint (Initiative 7):

"Why ye gotta go pick on Flint? Go after the fire priest and stick to da damn plan!" the duergar crossbowmen asks with annoyance as the frost giant comes crashing forward. Obviously sick of being shot at or wise enough to avoid the fires, the frost giant apparently wanted to take out his tormentor.

Now finding himself close enough to smell the stink on the giant, he started running through a mental check list of options. He could tumble away, but he couldn't do it fast enough to escape the giant and might get hit on the roll.

Simply disappearing seemed like a good option too, thanks to his innate ability to become invisible for a short time. The time it took to concentrate on THAT would only leave him open to an attack, he could lose the spell, and still bear the full brunt of its attack.

No, duergar don't run. At least not as a first resort.

Suddenly, he heard the howl of magic and a bright, flash of light and thought that Buelyir and his ridiculous sword had done something again. Instead, it was a spear of lightning shooting through the frost giant's chest and Flint's heart leaped as the bolt sizzled by him.

"Damn, that wizard's powerful" he notes, as he blinks away the light for a moment.

The giant freezes as if mid seizure for a moment and than lets out a baleful howl of pain from the jolt. He sways and staggers as smoke can be seen and that burned flesh smell curls Flint's nose.

Unfortunately, the lightning didn't kill it. Too bad the lightning didn't hit the thing's heart!

"Could've killed it for me. That'd have been nice. Maybe ye could have done that before it charged? Damn mages..." Flint curses.

Still... duergar don't run.

They do dodge though.

Kelith winced as his injuries began to take a toll, first the giant thrown boulder, then a vicious hit from the hobgoblin lieutenant. In his zeal to display the power of fire over enemies of his lord, he had perhaps overextended himself.

"I could use a bit of help here! There's a nice cluster of foes in front of me here that are begging for a fireball to consume them!"

Fire, and more fire... he would call upon the glory of Kossuth once more, by himself if he needed to! Let them all be consumed!

Keleth utters a command word, activating his Salamander Cloak as an immediate action (1d6+7 fire damage to melee attacker that strikes him for this round). He then 5 foot steps to I9, and speaks another command word, once more triggering the cone of fire from his Gauntlets of the Blazing Arc (15 ft cone, 4d4+4 fire. Battle 2 - Round 5:

Arman (Initiative 26):

The Elven wizard’s hands begin to crackle with electricity as he weaves his spell, though none of you can see it happening. Aiming at the second frost giant, he releases the lightening with a deafening thunderclap that echoes around the cave. The bolt strikes the giant square in the chest, causing smaller arcs of lightning to dance across his armor and singe his beard. The large warrior keeps his feet, though the sudden jolt has seriously fried him.

Arman hits Frost Giant 2 with a lightning bolt. The giant fails its reflex save (though I think it was flat footed anyway against the attack) and takes 46 damage

Kelith (Initiative 18):

Setting his cloak on fire, the fire warrior steps forward and once again activates his gauntlets, dousing the command group in magical fire. Though the Lieutenant and Sergeant are able to twist sideways and cover their faces, the cleric takes the full force of the magical fire right in the face. All three of the hobgoblins remain standing after the attack. The fire continues to roll on, freeing up the sergeant.

Kelith moves to I9 and activates his salamander cloak. His fire gauntlets deal 6 damage to the Lieutenant and Sergeant and 13 damage to the cleric.

Buelyir (Initiative 17):

Suddenly winking in and out of view, Buelyir delivers two nasty cuts to the frost giant. The beast now bleeds profusely from its many wounds and seems to be having trouble standing fully upright.

Buelyir moves to L7 to provide a flanking bonus for Talamir and to get in range himself. The first blow connects for 11 HP and the second for 15 HP. Buelyir makes his miss chance check.

Frost Giant 1 (Initiative 15):

Though the giant has trouble bringing the axe full above its head, he still has enough fight left in him to bring his axe down on Buelyir again. The axe blow strikes true, coming straight down on top of Buelyir’s head. Fortunately, Buelyir winks out of existence just as the axe makes it past his guard. The axe thuds into the ground with a shower of sparks as Buelyir reappears just beside it. The second of the giant’s attack comes as a sweeping arc aimed at Buelyir’s legs. Once again the attack would have had a devastating effect if the dwarf hadn’t slipped between planes as the attack went harmlessly by.

The giant scores two hits against Buelyir but fails both his miss rolls.

Frost Giant 2 (Initiative 15):

The second frost giant brings its axe down upon Flint, apparently holding some grudge against the Duergar. Fortunately again for the roguish Duergar the frost giant’s swing proves clumsy and smashes into the large rock next to him. His second strike, however, proves more accurate, connecting solidly with Flint and tears through his armor. By some small miracle the blow does not cleave the Duergar in two and seems to have missed his vital organs, though Flint is sure his shoulder blade has been smashed to pieces.

The giant rolls a 2 (20 total) with his first attack, missing Flint. The second attack (35) connects solidly for 25 damage.

Talamir (Initiative 11):

Talamir lashes out against the giant twice, managing to pierce the giant’s armor once. The giant roars in pain from the blow and sags even deeper into its tired stance.

Talamir’s first strike hits the giant for 8 damage

Flint (Initiative 7):

Having been struck by the giant and without an easy means of escape, the Duergar wisely decides to fight more defensively, watching the giant’s movements carefully to dodge its attacks. Hopefully the pointy-eared wizard could bring down the giant before it splits the grey dwarf in two.

Total Defense +4 AC. Tumble Bonus to Total Defense +2 AC. Dodge v. giants +4 AC. Normal AC22]

Hobgoblin Command Group:

The Lieutenant brings his greatsword to bear on the fire priest, bringing his greatsword sideways in a nasty arc that could easily have gutted Kelith. Only by a small miracle is he able to move away from the blow, reducing its punishment somewhat. The hobgoblin’s attack is not without a price, however, as Kelith’s salamander cloak burns him, overpowering the warrior and causing him to collapse. Now free of the flames, the Sergeant moves around behind to flank Kelith. Despite his superior positioning, he is unable to hit the flame-wielding warrior.

The lieutenant scores an unconfirmed critical hit (20) against Kelith, dealing 10 damage. Kelith’s cloak deals 11 damage to the lieutenant, dropping him. The sergeant moves to flank Kelith and misses with his longsword.

The Hobgoblin Formation 1 (10/10):

One of the ten manages to break free of the fire, he stumbles out of the sticky webbing, looking on helplessly as his allies are about to be burnt alive.

Hobgoblin Cleric:

Frustrated and nearly burnt to a crisp, the cleric begins to cast a spell, dodging adeptly as Kelith tries to strike him. Completing his spell, he reaches out and touches Kelith on the arm, delivering a rush of necrotic energy that saps the life force from him. Despite his efforts to shake off the damage, Kelith takes the full force of the spell, though his cloak scorches the cleric in return.

The cleric avoids Kelith’s Attack of Opportunity and hits him with Inflict Serious Wounds. Kelith fails his will save and takes the full 18 points of damage. His cloak deals 9 damage to the cleric.

Turn 5

Buelyir (Initiative 17):

As he flutters between realty and the etheral plane, Buelyir gives a quick prayer of thanks as his spell causes him to avoid two blows from the brute. He takes a moment to look around the battlefield and sees that Flint is in trouble, but assumes Arman will be able to bring down the giant in short order. He had faith that Flint could take care of himself for a moment as well, but he was not looking too good either.

Not caring to play around much longer, Buelyir feints once again. He sweeps his sword back behind him and lunges at the giant and intentionally bangs the obvious blow against the giant's axe, as he moves to defend. As soon as his blade touched his opponent's axe, he reversed his cut and spun around to land a vicious hit that opened up the giant's armor and abdomen.

The blow rocks the surprised giant as Buelyir finishes his spin and squares his stance once again, ready to defend himself. Once again, the booming of the sword echoes loudly through the chambers.

Buelyir used Improved Feint and rolls a 31, than rolls a 34 to hit. He does 15 dmg with the sword and 18 with the sneak attack.

Turn 5

Flint (Initiative 7)

Assuming the Frost Giant is still alive, and he is too...

"Could use a little help here, wizard!" Flint exclaims. The giant had wounded him seriously, and while he could still fight, his shoulder felt a wreck.

Just get in there, than bob and weave... comes the voice of an old serjeant, reminding him of how to avoid a giant's clumsy blows.

Up close was not how he preferred to fight, duergar or no, and this was a good reason why.

He just had to hold on long enough for one of these poncey Patriarchate mercenaries or their master to put this giant on the floor...

If Frost Giant 2 is dead...

Flint moves away from the first fallen giant and swings over to the second and brings his crossbow to bear. Inside 20 feet now, the giant seems unaware of his presence as it battles Talamir and Buelyir. He pulls the trigger on his crossbow and it makes a dutiful "chunk" noise as it throws a bolt at the giant.

Flint rolls a 18, but does not suffer a -4 for firing into a melee.

If Frost Giant 2 is down but not dead...

Flint walks over to it, lowers his crossbow and puts a bolt through its skull without saying a word.

Thordrek, relieved that the army, for now, was friendly, shakes his head.

Magnum and Nega have gone ahead, seems our scouts got in a bit of trouble, they went to support them. But we have Nalrak here, and if he's out I do have a few healing potions to get them on their feet until we can get them help. I'm sure they'll be able to help eventually, but I think we should leave your new friends out of the mop up here, the fighting's a bit too chaotic to risk an unknown army going in. I was going there actually, if anyone want's to come with

"Scouts getting in a bit of trouble?" Johannes asks with a grin. "Buelyir is with them. Of course they got into some trouble. The bloke probably went looking for it!" the dwarf says and laughs. Hopefully the situation was as amusing as Johannes seemed to think it was. The two had not seemed to get along very well, perhaps due to their similarities, at least in Johannes' mind.

"I think yer right about not getting involved at the moment though. It's nay like they have armor or weapons besides what they stripped off their guards. I'd say after the battle is won, we armor them up as best we can and find'em some good bloody coats." Johannes says, glancing back at the chilled and nearly naked slaves.

Most of them look terribly thin, some with fresh scars. Some clutched bleeding wounds.

"Most are ready for some payback, but spectating works too. A few are seriously hurt, but most are upright. A few are actually pretty tough mercenaries too, could be handy. Take them over anyone in Black's Blades or Blood Company, unless they nay meet our requirements for being either evil drunks or evil narcassists" Johannes says and shrugs.

"So, whats the plan for getting these lads outta here? They say they pathway up is by the church to the north o'us, but that's where the dragons come through too. Just march on out?"

Kelith round 5:

Kelith smirked with satisfaction as the Lieutenant fell unconscious, his own attack being turned against him by the flames of the Salamander Cloak... but now he faced a grim choice. He was taking a beating and would not be able to hold out much longer; he had to step back and call upon the powers Kossuth granted him to heal himself, or seriously risk being beaten down.

And yet... as he winced from the cleric of the Frostmaiden's foul magic, and saw the faces of the two foes before him, close enough to smell the stink of their last heavy breaths, Kelith made up his mind.

"Let the cleaning fire of Kossuth burn your filth, and the one you serve," he said calmly as he took a step back and spoke the command phrases to activate his bracers, one last time.

He would finish them off... and pray, trusting in the power of fire. Perhaps his allies would come to his aid as well.

I'm sure they'll do, the policy on evil and sadism is a lot more relaxed then it used to be. As for our course of action, first I thought I'd go help Tasster and the Duergar with the battle, then we can see about going forward, anyone who's not too wounded or a healer should come with me, the others can take care of Carmard and try to organize that mob into units of 20 or so, take inventory of their skills and so on. Maybe someone could put together a wooden leg of sorts, or a chair on his shield. Well then, who's with me?

The Slaves

“Figured I’d ask, seems you’ll take anyone. Apparently you don’t have to be a scoundrel after all, not that I mind Sable. Quite the opposite really” Johannes says with a wide smile, his gold tooth glimmering from the light of some nearby fires.

He looks around and sees Carmard on the ground and frowns slightly, although when he sees him move he seems relieved. When Thordek offers him a string of potions, Johannes takes them and thanks Thordek.
He motions to a female in the group of slaves and offers her the potions to pass out amongst the most gravely injured. She takes them and actually gives Johannes a kiss on the cheek that surprises him a little and laughs for a moment.

“As for arming them up, I’ve been collecting some weapons from the scrapes on the way in. Also, a ridiculous amount of canned fish. I’m told this place is a fish cannery? I’m so glad to be risking limb and beard to sack the fabled tin mines of Auril. Fish is pretty decent though” Johannes remarks, than turns back to the grumbling slaves.

“Hey boys, those of ye I gave the sword and armor, why don’t ye follow Mr. Thordek and go kill some more of yer oppressors before we have all the fun” Johannes beckons them forward, and three groups of 8 burly looking slaves armed with long swords and battered leather armor step forward. They include humans, dwarves and elves primarily. One is a dark elf even.
“What a wonderfully diverse blood bath we’re planning, like being back in Sigil” he smirks.

The slave soldiers follow along with Thordek as they follow him into the battle…

Arman was surprised that the frost giant was still standing, but knew it wouldn't take much to bring it down. Flint was in bad shape and he knew it. The state of Flint being confirmed when he heard Flint yell that he needed help.

Not willing to give away his position more than he had already, he nodded, knowing Flint couldn't see it, and started to once again gather the energy needed for his next spell. It was an easy enough one and soon he had the energy needed for it.

I'm thinking that Buelyir is actually attacking Frost Giant 1. I'm waiting for Mike to confirm this. If he is attacking FG 2, i will adjust my post for after that strike. Until then, this is whats going down...

Battle 2 - Round 6:

Arman (Initiative 26):
The invisible wizard turns to the staple of any arcane spellcaster, unleashing a series of magical bolts that fly unerringly towards the frost giant. The five magic missiles connect squarely with the Giant’s torso, yet somehow the monster still stands.

Arman deals 15 damage to Frost Giant 2

Kelith (Initiative 18):
Kelith sidesteps back and once again activates his bracers, the flames just manage to catch both hobgoblins, catching their clothes alight and knocking out both of them.

The fire presses onward, catching the first row of hobgoblins in its path. They twist and squirm as they catch fire, though they are all still alive.

Kelith deals 12 damage to the cleric and the sergeant killing both of them. The fire deals 11 damage to the front rank of hobgoblins trapped in the webbing.

Buelyir (Initiative 17):
Buelyir successfully feints the giant and delivers a massive blow, overwhelming the last of the giant’s strength and sending the hulking creature collapsing to the ground.

Buelyir deals 33 damage to Frost Giant 1, knocking it unconscious.

Frost Giant 1 (Initiative 15):
Dying! I assume nobody is going to revive him, so unless noted, we will let him bleed out peacefully…

Frost Giant 2 (Initiative 15):
Seeing his “brother” fall, the giant goes into a rage, slashing at Flint twice. Now on the defensive, Flint easily dodges both blows, parrying the clumsy swings as he sidesteps them.

The giant misses both of his attacks against Flint’s super-pumped up AC

Talamir (Initiative 11):
With the first frost giant dead, Talamir double moves to Flint’s aid. He gets within the giant’s reach and stops, not wanting to invoke an attack of opportunity.

Talamir double moves to P11

Flint (Initiative 7):
Flint continues to bob and weave, trying his best to live to see another day.

Another round of defense.

Hobgoblin Command Group:
Similarly dead/dying!

The Hobgoblin Formation 1 (10/10):

Nega and Hjalmar versus The Ice Golem
Round 1

Nega and Hjalmar are pounding ground towards Buelyir’s position. The booming sound of Buelyir’s sword draws them closer, eager to join the battle before it concluded but most of all to pass on the news of Carmard’s fall to their erstwhile commander. The two urge each other on, wounded and running flat out in heavy armor as they are. The two paladin’s chests heave from the exertion of their run. Watching Wyatt and the heavily armored Magnum leave them in their dust was just depressing to them…
As it turned out, lagging behind may have been fortuitous. Out of the gloom to the north, in the direction of the Aurilite’s temple, there is the sound of heavy footsteps and the glow of blue lights above the ground. Whatever it was, it was large.

Even with most of its forces sent to battle, they had still kicked quite the beehive…

The two paladins stop their runs towards the one battle and turn towards pounding footsteps and the blue glow. They square their stance and raise their battered shields and wait to see what is coming next for them.

Out of the darkness comes a large, lumpy looking figure with glowing eyes and a heavy frame. It stands 10 feet tall and is as wide as it was tall. The body is made of chunks of blue and white, and it takes a moment for them to realize the bodies were made of chunks of ice, for whatever that was worth. One hand is an oversized fist, while the other is a long, curving blade that looked big enough to cleave a cow in half.

Beside the heavy figure is a robed man holding a staff with a glowing white scepter. He stands to the left and behind it, pointing the staff ahead of him.
The two paladins look between each other and recognize what is before them plainly enough.

A golem of ice and it’s controller.

Behind them, a line of more hobgoblins....

Neither had ever saw a golem made of ice before, nor one armed with a rusty cleaver.

Buelyir's Patrol - Incoming

The sound of a wolf’s howl echoes through the area, off to the left. The howl becomes a chorus in the reply. Out of the gloomy halls, anyone who would care to look sees a line of fast moving white shadows. Riders sit atop them, with lances held high. As they come into view, they split into three groups of 2 and continue their run in with enough separation as to lessen the effects of an area spell.

Behind them is a more massive creature, and this with what looks like a giant atop it…

“Wolf riders!” Buelyir cries out, immediately recognizing them after far too long dealing with the Host of Auril in this area… “…and whatever the hell is behind’em!”

The urge to charge into battle with the remaining giant pulled strongly at his heart, especially when he saw a clear path (Armen is still invisible?) for such an assault. But after hearing Buelyir call out, Magnum nodded once to Wyatt and grumbled something deep in his throat, apparently in agreement with the scout's assessment.

That sound was only the first rumbling that expanded quickly into a stanza of his Ehontar. Drawing his giantbane axe as the Alaghor sang out boldly, he moved to engage the nearest hobgoblin that was free from the web (H9). Hjalmar – 11 HP
Nega – 11 HP

Hjalmar (Initiative 17): Thankful he just quaffed that potion, Hjalmar shrugs off the spell and press forward. He holds his battered shield firmly, his eyes just above it as he advances. He had no plans to lose his other eye.

Hjalmar does a double move forward. So far, he is closest to the mage but did not want to show his intent to go after the mage. He moves forward 40 feet.

The Ice Golem (Initiative 14): The golem lumbers forward, its feet pounding on the ground with long, smooth motions. Water drips from its blade as it stomps closer to the two dwarves. The blazing blue eyes are intent and alive with whatever energy animates the thing…

The golem advances 20 feet.

Nega (Initiative 11): Blasted by the ball of cold, Nega is rocked back by a wave of bone chilling cold once again. She snarls through the pain, more annoyed than wounded by it at this point. She moves forward as well 40 feet.

Buelyir (Initiative 17)

With the frost giant down on the ground, Buelyir relaxes his stance for a moment and lowers his sword. The exotic blade is slick with blood, and as he lowers it, it runs off the blade. He quickly assesses the situation. One giant was mortally wounded, and he had to trust the wizard and Flint to take care of their own situation. Talamir certainly could handle himself as well. The arrival of two allies would help as well. He was not sure which dwarf was coming, but the darting figure had to be that pesky halfling.

Deciding things were well enough in hand for a few seconds, Buelyir fell back 20 feet and then quaffed a potion to heal his wounds. That giant’s axe had stung him, but his sword had stung more. Unfortunately, it had the habit of drawing a great deal of unwanted attention too. He also took a moment to kill the blinking effect, so not to give anything away to his foes until the time was right. Every once in awhile, he had to look towards his own problems… and his wounds were serious enough he needed them taken care of before the next wave…

Cavalry was not going to be fun, he concluded…

As he fell back, Buelyir saw the flames all around Kelith as he burned his foes with tongues of flame from his wrists and was wreathed in fire himself. Not sure what else the cleric would do, Buelyir decided to confer some good sense.

“Get the hell back! We got cavalry coming, ye bloody fire eater!”

If the giant is still alive…

Assuming the frost giant is still alive, Flint will continue his total defense against the frost giant as he ducks and moves for his life. If he had a moment, it would have galled the dwarf that he was betting his life on assistance from two elves. As he did not have that moment, he kept up his dodges and hoped the giant tried its luck on someone easier to hit. He didn’t have anything against Talamir, but was an elf…

If the giant has fallen...

Thankful that the giant was gone now, Flint takes a breath for a moment and then moves behind some cover for him to shoot from and a place for a good drink.

Flint moves forward a bit and stumbles behind the cover, beads of sweat running down his face from the pain and exertion. He quaffs a potion of his own and looks around for someone to plug…

Talamir Round 6, Initiative 11

Though he could not see Arman, Talamir heard the sounds of spellcasting, and the effects of the spells that struck at the remaining giant; what he did not expect, however, was the sound he heard just now... the distinct sound of a blade whistling through the air, aimed at the giant.

Hjalmar and Nega

Wizard (Initiative 18): With both dwarves still standing, the wizard next takes aim at Hjalmar as his line of sight is obscured by the hulking golem. The intent of the bigger dwarf seemed clear enough, come after the wizard. He had no intent of allowing that, if he could help it. He concentrates for a moment, then sends a mass if sizzling magical energy right at Hjalmar.

Whatever it was, it startles Hjalmar as he tenses for a moment. His nerves halt for a moment but his mind fights off the spell. That wizard had actually just tried some sort of holding magic on him! That was bold!

Luckily, it did not work or Hjalmar might have been in trouble.

Seeing his spell was unsuccessful, the wizard backs away behind the line of infantry to avoid the presumably angry dwarf.

Hjalmar (Initiative 17): With how the golem was positioned, if he went charging off into the fray, Hjalmar would probably take a hit from the golem as he passed by it. As strong as his armor one, a chunk of ice with a rusty sword wasn’t going to deter him a bit though.

Putting his head down and shield angled towards the golem, Hjalmar plunges headfirst towards the infantry line. While he couldn’t charge the wizard, he could cut through the few guards it had…

As he surges past the golem, it does indeed swing at him. The butcher’s blade in its hand whistles through the air. Not a thing of subtlety or quickness, Hjalmar catches the blade and deflects it away without hardly any effort at all. He could tell it was incredibly strong though…

He crashes into the first hobgoblin with his shield, forcing it back just enough for his hammer swing to take it square in the face. The hammer blazes in protests from the contact with goblin flesh and blows the hobgoblin on to its back, quite dead…

Hjalmar hits the hobgoblin for 21 hp, obliterating it…

The Ice Golem (Initiative 14): Willed forward to deal with the other dwarf, the ice golem stomps towards Nega and saving her the inconvenience of heading towards her. It’s opening cleave is incredibly strong and Nega reels from the blow, but it was ultimately her shield that took the brunt of the chop. Having held her guard, she only earns another deep bruise on top of countless others…

Being so close to the golem though is not without its downsides though, she feels a chill just being in its presence…

Nega takes 1 HP cold damage.

Nega (Initiative 10): Faced with an angry chunk of ice and already badly wounded, the battered paladin launches into her own attack against the golem. Being an animated piece of ice, she knew it was no more malevolent than, well… ice, so the Silver Mace would be far less effective.

Both blows connect with the golem’s barrel chest, scattering chunks of ice but the damage is far less than she hoped.

Nega’s mace does 7 and then 2 hp damage to the golem….

Hobgoblin Infantry (Initiative 7): With one of their number already killed by this hulking dwarf, three of the hobgoblins attack Hjalmar with their ice picks. In quick succession, Hjalmar knocks each blow aside with deft shield work. Each blow rings out as it connects with his heavy shield, pocking its metal face.

The fourth soldier was something a little different. It swings something over his head, and Hjalmar has just enough time to look disdainfully at it before a net, weighted with stones, comes flying right at him. The net uncoils in flight and entangles the dwarf, impeding his movements…

DM Note: A net is used to entangle enemies. When you throw a net, you make a ranged touch attack against your target. A net’s maximum range is 10 feet. If you hit, the target is entangled. An entangled creature takes a -2 penalty on attack rolls and a -4 penalty on Dexterity, can move at only half speed, and cannot charge or run. If you control the trailing rope by succeeding on an opposed Strength check while holding it, the entangled creature can move only within the limits that the rope allows. If the entangled creature attempts to cast a spell, it must make a DC 15 Concentration check or be unable to cast the spell.

An entangled creature can escape with a DC 20 Escape Artist check (a full-round action). The net has 5 hit points and can be burst with a DC 25 Strength check (also a full-round action).

Thordek and Arum

The pair charge at the lead of two dozen armed slaves looking for some retribution for their rough captivity. Sufficiently motivated and armed now, and apparently led by a few folks who had held a sword before a mining pick, Thordek figured they could take care of themselves.

He just hoped Johannes mentioned not to attack the duergar!

To that end, Thordek had told Bundok and Duervar to stay back with the slaves to offer some direction. Neither were officers, but they had been in a scrape before. Duervar even mentioned that, being a former slave miner himself, he’d happily held lead another bloody rebellion.

Not that Thordek and an inkling what the half dwarf was even talking about, but he often said quite a few things and stubbornly refused explanation.

The slaves collided with the hobgoblin’s flank with a fury, soon forcing the hobgoblins to split their line and drop their spears so they could fight from two fronts. Their discipline saved a route and they took up a defensive stance, trying to hold off the slaves as long as they could. What they were holding for was unknown, but Thordek doubted they’d survive if they ran either, after the slaves got ahold of them.

With the close quarters, the duergar with the flame throwers stayed back to defend the wounded and Carmard’s position. There was too great a risk spraying the fire around, and they were the best defense against more frost giants they had available with the two mages out of commission…

Thordek and Arum slipped behind the duergar lines after guiding the slaves attack and looked for an opening to get to the front of the battle. It turned out it was easy enough to find, as an area had cleared between the ogre and Sonnlinor Stonebreaker. Three ogres lay on the ground already, burned and bloodied but the last of the ogres had the cleric back on his heels.

As he closed, he saw two more ogres standing back from what amounted to a duel between the duergar cleric and the ogre. He squinted as he approached and noticed the ogre was different… this one had blue skin and horns, while wielding a hefty greatsword.

Ogre mage, he thought. This place was a veritable menagerie… Well, it was known the Aurilites had ogres like that in their Host. Tolrin’s group had tangled with some of them, frost giants, an ice devil they met in the demon orc caverns for the second time and a priestess with a sled drawn by armored polar bears. It sounded ridiculous, but Arum, Bundok and Duervar swore it true. That mission, just before this one, was how Tolrin had communicated with the duergar who were fighting in front of him right now.

Things came full circle like a sling stone to the head sometimes, though….

The ogre wasn’t just big… it was good with its sword and he watched it land a heavy blow on the cleric, despite his own skill. How bad the wound was, if any, he had no idea but the cleric needed help.

Keeping him alive was key to the Patriach’s priorities, so whether he wanted an honorable duel or not with that beast, he needed to get in there.

Thordek pushes his way into the confrontation and charges the ogre mage and lands a blow with his adamantine axe, but it is a glancing blow. The axe opens up a cut on the ogre’s leg, but within moments he watches it heal almost completely.
Ogre mages could regenerate. Plus they were mages. No wonder the cleric was having difficulty with it.

“Oi, Thordek! Glad to see ya!” the Sonnlinor says quickly, almost cheerfully, yet not wanting to distract himself. “Watch out for the other two brutes!” the cleric warns.

Two wounded ogres roar in surprise as someone else joined the fight and got ready to charge in against Thordek.

Hopefully Arum and his nasty badger were right behind him to even out the odds a little….

Thordek hits for 6 hp on the ogre mage, but 5 HP are healed almost immediately...

Watching his blow heal almost instantly, Thordrek gets and evil grin and whispersAlways wanted to try that, before muttering a Netherese incantation.

Battle 2 - Round 7:

Note: While I remove the dead hobgoblins from the map, the dead giants are large enough to serve as cover so their corpses will stay in play.

Arman (Initiative 26):
The invisible wizard moves behind the giant and slashes with his sword. Unfortunately the attack is unable to pierce the giant’s tough armor and the mage is unable to take a five foot step away (you moved this round so you can’t 5-foot step). Arman sees the giant twitch from his attack, suddenly aware that there is someone behind him….

Arman fails to hit the giant.

Wyatt (Initiative 24):
Wyatt darts in towards the hobgoblins, using his ability to attack on the move to devastating effect, killing hobgoblin #8 and retreating out of the way.

Wyatt deals a ridiculous amount of damage to the hobgoblin, “killing” it.

Kelith (Initiative 18):
Utilizing the restorative powers of his faith, Kelith heals his wounds and moves towards the remaining giant. His fires continue to do their deadly work, dropping the front row of squirming hobgoblins and catching the three who are still trapped in flames.

Kelith heals 31 hit points. Augmented Healing? Totally worth it. Kelith continues to roast more hobgoblins with his spell that keeps on giving.

Buelyir (Initiative 17):
Moving back and quaffing his healing potion, Buelyir gives the fire priest a jab and some advice along the way.

Buelyir falls back to L11 and drinks a Cure Serious Wounds potion, than discards it casually. It heals him 25 hp.

Magnum (Initiative 15):
Drawing his weapon and starting up a song, Magnum moves into position to attack the few remaining hobgoblins.

Ehontar successfully activated?

Frost Giant 2 (Initiative 15):
Emboldened by the cavalry, the frost giant lays into Flint with renewed vigor. He slashes twice at the nimble rogue and manages to hit nothing but air.

Again the Frost Giant misses Flint twice.

Talamir (Initiative 11):
Talamir steps up, determined to put the Frost Giant down before he can do any more damage. With two quick strokes he tears into its exposed flanks, finally driving him to the ground. The massive man lays there bleeding, finally defeated.

Talamir manages to bring the giant to -1 HP!

Flint (Initiative 7):
Thankful to still be in one piece, Flint quaffs a healing potion to patch himself up as he readies for the next wave of enemies.

Flint moves to M14 and quaffs a healing potion.

The Hobgoblin Formation 1 (4/10):
Though most of the hobgoblins are too busy writhing in pain and trying fruitlessly to escape the webbing, Hobgoblin #9 slashes at Magnum with his longsword and scores a critical hit (19). Crit confirm roll = 17 (probably a miss). 6 damage (12 if confirmed).

The Cavalry
Six hobgoblins riding vicious looking wolves come pounding towards you. They split into three groups of two, lowering their lances as they advance on your positions. Lumbering behind them is a truly massive polar bear in chain barding being ridden by a frost giant. He too bears a lance, though this one glistens with ice and bears a banner of Auril (he is only partway on the map, being huge and rather slow).

Arum & Thordek

Thordek: Facing an Ogre Mage was somewhat unexpected, but at least this place had a variety. He knew enough about this species of ogre to know that it could regenerate its wounds quickly, not unlike a troll. That hypothesis was only confirmed when the wound he had inflicted was immediately healed. Of course, burns couldn’t be healed and his scorching rays were powerful enough they’d nearly burn this monstrosity down.

He focused a moment and said the proper Netherese incantations before channeling his scorching ray spells into his axe. The blade connects and cuts a deep gash into the ogre, but the explosion of fire leaves the creature relatively unscatched. The ogre stumbles for a moment and snarls. .

“Huuur hurr, dwarf! Carnax laughs at your tricks!”

Frak. They really can resist magic too…

The wound was healing already too...

Ogre Mage: The mage shifts its attention from Sonnlinor Stonebreaker to Thordek, swinging his hefty greatsword hard at Thordek. The first blow connects hard, rocking the dwarf back on his heels. The sword was a heavy one with a sharp edge that peeled and split his armor, cutting into his pectoral and deeper.

The Ogre Mage hits him hard, wounding Thordek 17 HP.

Arum: The bold little gnome tries to do his best with his rapier. He’s not a warrior with it, but he understands the purpose of the blade well enough. Stick them with the pointy end! He does just that, thrusting it and pricking the ogre.

His badger nips and snarls at the ogre, but does little damage for all its fury…

Arum scores a hit on the ogre, doing 4 hp with his mithril rapier. The wound bleeds, but its hardly fatal.

Ogre 1: The ogre, already wounded by the Sonnlinor, didn’t need another wound from the irksome gnome and its pet. It roars and swings its club over its head and tries to crush the gnome, but Arum ducks out of the way and slides the badger away from the blow. Like dwarves, gnomes knew a thing or two about avoiding giants…

The ogre rolls a 15, missing Arum.

Sonnlinor Stonebreaker: Not bothering with witty repartee, the Sonnlinor swings his hammer at the ogre mage. The blow connects with a bang as his hammer hits the ogre’s armor, but there is little discernable damage. It would seem his hammer was not heavily enchanted, or at least in a way useful for this fight…

Ogre 2: The second ogre swings hard at the level of Arum’s head, but the brute’s swing hits nothing but air…

The ogre rolls a 17 and barely misses…

Gryndel - probably just like activating a bardic music ability, since that is how it seems to work most similarly to, which is no action. But GM's call there.

Wyatt

"Pop quiz. How long's it take to beat a moron to death?"

Wyatt's mocking question asked earlier to the hobgoblin he was attacking was swiftly answered as he beaned the poor bastard in the back of the head, sending it crashing to the ground on its face. "BONK! Sorry, time's up, you're dead."

He turned to look to the side as the reinforcements for the enemy side arrived. "Well, 'dis just got a lot more interestin'..."

Not looking forward to engaging these enemies head on, Wyatt decided to fall back a bit and help get Magnum out of his mess. He moves toward the hobgoblin that attacked Magnum, taking a swipe at him as he runs past and puts distance between himself and the wolf riders. "Hey, over here, blockhead. Remember me? Yeah, you do." He then turns and calls out to the others, pointing to the west. "We got inbound! Get ready!"

Attacking Hobgoblin 9 10 (providing 9 is dead) on the move with Spring Attack. Attack him at B11 C13, and then continue to and end movement at B15 D14.

Buelyir (Initiative 17): Still somewhat wounded, the gnawing pain of the laceration and punctures hardly matter to him at the moment as he looks across the battlefield.

They’ve got a giant. Riding a dire bear. Yeah, I’m pretty sure we’re frakked… Buelyir laments to himself.

He raises his coiled bow that Sable had given him in Sigil and puts the scope to his eye and sweeps the approaching line, trying to think of what to do. Judging that he needed to keep a flank free, he turns and shoots the unusual weapon and hopes it’s a relatively flat trajectory.

Indeed it is, as the bow fires with a hard metallic clank and stabs through the air at one of the winter wolves, in hopes of giving Kelith a breather by laming at least one of the attackers. A bolt a foot in length zips through the air and hits the winter wolf in the flank as it moves forward, stabbing deeply into its shoulder. Instead of hitting its heart, it hits armor, thick muscle and a solid shoulder blade. The yelp the creature produces is satisfying enough, but he had hoped to topple it.

Buelyir rolls a 22 and hits for 20 damage to R5.

Letting the coilbow drop and be caught by its harness, he throws it over his back again and draws his sword from the rune covered sheath. Both sword and sheath glow this time, and the katana blade has a gleaming, lethal edge now.

“Whatever ye got, throw it out there mage! Get yer spells rolling too, Kelith! Clear yer flank and roll up it. I’ll hold’em off if I can!”

Flint (Initiative 7): Figuring it’d be best to go with Buelyir’s plan, Flint shifts south a step and drops to one knee to take aim at the same wolf that Buelyir had just plugged. Using the frost giant’s body as a bench rest, he takes aim and sends another bolt flying towards the beastie.

The bolt catches it square it the chest, sinking deep enough that he was sure it was going to at least hurt.

Flint rolls a 19 and does 7 HP damage with his crossbow to R5.
