Remember: An ABR flashback

Well, I'm trying to get as much practice with InkScape as I can at the moment, since there's a lull in the action of ABR for my character. So, I'm going to be making this little series to explore the background and past of Lyinginbedmon.

Book 1: Betrayal Blues
In the beginning, everything was fine. The Moon Elf Empire began it's expansive front a couple of years ago, but the superpower that was Arcania had little to fear. It was here that Stephanie Lawrence, Rain Morgan, Oscar Stonehelm, and Igon Minoblendy made their residence.

And then the war finally came to their doorsteps. Betrayed by their newest friend, the friends found themselves two short and little more than nomads in the unfamiliar wilds of the mainland. After an extensive period of mourning and melancholy, they made foot for the Elwind Alliance, homeland of Stonehelm, seeking refuge and information.

Meanwhile, the betrayer, Lex the Malign, signed his papers with the Empire and drew together, they drew their plans against the Alliance. War was coming to the survivors once again.

:smalleek: your character for ABR is *older* than mine, and he's meant to be old even by vampire standards (not the oldest left, but y'know) what's strange is that lying *looks* older too.

The vampire will have more respect for Lying when they finally meet, I mean you actually met Slidyu, and I think threesades will have a few choice words for you when she finds out.

Also I have a plot point I'd like to discuss with you lying since if your doing your whole history thing and you'll have had to run into at least one vampire in that time, but if your not interested simply say so, I'll pin it on someone else:smalltongue:

The battle will be shown, I was just doing a flash-forward in the last two panels for dramatic effect.

@V The blue rober in the last comic isn't Lying, that's Lex Vietmaghn. You'll notice in the first that Lying has (had?) blonde hair, whilst Lex has black. Unlike Lying, Lex has also been statted here (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showpost.php?p=3505143&postcount=18), as have Hugo and Nimhelvin, who also appear in the comic. I won't be statting the Immortals in that thread until I introduce exactly what they are. :smallwink:

Thanks for the compliments, I will be showing how he got the Lyinginbedmon monicker eventually, as well as why he has survived for so long. At the moment, that largest plot issues are introducing all the main characters sufficiently and getting through the Fall of Arcania plotline.

I'm going to be doing a brief little family tree tonight, though I may get another comic out as well.

Greyed-out characters are ones I'm not expecting to have to put into a comic, or that are dead

Lawrence, Hugo - Hugo is one of the youngest councilmen, having only joined a 3 years ago. He is a highly adept Bard with a penchant for Enchantment spells and has often served as Arcania's finest diplomat. As a result, he is often away from home and was unavailable for much of Steph's childhood. He's disappointed in her for not following in the family's bardic tradition, and they do not get along well.
Lawrence, Steph - Steph is a full-time junior reporter for the Gold Coin Daily newspaper. Steph hangs out with Igon, Oscar, and Rain when she has free time, especially during their coinciding lunch breaks.
Lawrence, Maria - Maria is the wife of Hugo Lawrence, they grew up together in Diminus, Arcania. Because Hugo often spends long periods away from home, she had to raise Steph virtually alone.
Minoblendy, Michael - Michael is a high-ranking priest in one of Arcania's many Temples of Boccob. Rather embarrassingly, he managed to impregnate Haizea after a one-night stand. He honoured the resulting commitment and they were wed 2 weeks later. Igon was the result.
Minoblendy, Haizea - Haizea is one of the longest-running councilwomen, and is one of the finest Transmuters in Arcania. She is a pragmatist, always trying to pull the most favourable result for everyone, but mothers her son especially.
Minoblendy, Igon - (Nice try, you'll have to read and see :smallwink:)
Morgan, Arthur - Arthur is without a doubt the longest-running councilman, having been on the council for 10 years (For comparison, Haizea has only been on for 6), and is the local meistro of Divination magic. He was previously married to Lucrezia, a brief marriage which spawn Rain. Since the breakup, he has done his best to be a good role model for her.
Morgan, Rain - Rain is the daughter of a councilman, Arthur Morgan, and it was through her father that she first met Igon when they were but children. A talented Illusionist, she is known for her defining trait: An extremely Chaotic Neutral alignment
Stonehelm, Bedelia - Bedelia lives in Elwind Mountains, where she was born, raised, and wed to Eoghan. Together they had a son, Oscar, who 10 years ago became a foreign exchange student in Arcania. She wrote to him of his father's passing.
Stonehelm, Eoghan - Eoghan was a brave Dwarven warrior, with a wife in Bedelia and a son in Oscar. After his son left for Arcania, he unfortunately passed away from illness 15 months ago. He was given a traditional Dwarven funeral with full battle honours.
Stonehelm, Oscar - Oscar is an apprentice Blacksmith in Arcania, and is friends with Igon, Steph, and Rain. He generally has an upbeat attitude and believes strongly in iron and steel over magic and mysticism, though he was deeply saddened by the passing of his father, and wishes he had been there when he died.
Vietmaghn, Lucrezia - Lucrezia is Arthur's ex-wife. They were married for one month before it came out that she had an affair during their honeymoon, which produced the twins Lex and Rain, and Arthur filed a divorce. Since then, her whereabouts have been largely unknown.
Vietmaghn, Lex - Lex grew up on the outer fringes of the city, only just inside the defensive wall. He was a talented scribe, though the occasional hint of his Warlock capabilities earned him persistent taunting. He eventually managed to find himself a prestigious occupation as the assistant to Councilman Lawrence.I'm probably not going to be able to get another comic out today, so you'll have to settle for some OOC (Out Of Comic) exposition :smallwink:

Yus, I wanted to make the dragon look like Yeril, but making a copper dragon looked too orange, a red dragon too red, but a gold dragon was just enough yellow.

That and its already been stated in the comic that Yeril decended from a Fire-type dragon so gold was the logical option, Ive got a vauge story in my head so Im gonner start planning out the few comic strips in alittle. :smallsmile:

As Commie says, you can't copyright an art style. If you could, half the Renaissance would have been legal battles :smalltongue: If I copied his work and then passed it off as my own, then it's a crime because I'd be passing off copyrighted material, but if I made it myself, imitating his style, without any of his characters or other proprietary materials, it's fine.

P'n'G is probably the worlds crudest online-web comic in the world and is drawn buy me. Malfuctioned (is supposed to) help(s) with the idea's and script (and spellings) :smalltongue: .

It's done completely buy hand and has no computer edditing.

Ultimate Magus is a prestige class from Complete Mage that blends prepared (Wizard) with spontaneous (Sorcerer) casting, it even allows you to add spellbook spells to your spells known and gives a CL boost to both to make up the difference from getting the levels to enter it, most importantly it allows you to burn prepared spell slots to add metamagic to spontaneous spells.

The penultimate frame would have been grander, but the items in it were causing worrying amounts of superlag as it was.

So everyone knows: The big important parts of the city use hidden combination locks that you have to use Telekinesis or Mage Hand or a similar spell to manipulate. The precise mechanisms inside the lock are animated to alter according to a precise formula, which only the Councilmen know. The door to city hall is a less-secure mechanism because it's less important than, say, the shield generator or the city gates.

Incendulus is my character's great grandad. He was the General of Sildyu's Dragon Armies, and he chose to follow her, as opposed to being forced by the talismen.

Okay, here's what I'm looking at:

There will be at least 4 "books", each succeeded with a time jump (So the next book will see the "traditional" Lying design, first seen in ABR and presently my avatar) of irregular length (The next is decades).

The titles of each book I've thus yet plotted out are:
Betrayal Blues
Awkward Alliance
Harsh Adversity
Blood GenesEach title is in some way relevant to the content, but I'm not saying how right now. The final book will focus less on Lying's group and more on the villains, Sildyu's minions. One of the group's members in book 1 will return for book 3. That's about all I'll say.

Each book should be about 30 comics. That's a rough total of 120 comics.

Presently, I'm not intending to publish these. The "book" segmentation is just so I can tell where significant story arcs end.

And overconfidence? I'm still wondering why people think these are good! If anything, I'm just an Aspy. I come up with a slimly described idea and I extrapolate the heck out of it compulsively until it's a finished product, which is what's happened here with 4 stretches of plot and a myriad of characters long before most of them will even show up.

At any rate, I just drew these two to make up for the lack of comic today.

EDIT: Come to think of it, Asperger's is probably a factor in why my art is apparently so good. I use InkScape, so it's all vectors. Vectors equates to numerical values in relation to each other with a delicately-controlled balance between...

Not quite helinan technology, but not very far from it. making the world even more "realistic" in terms of "close technology trees".

The "skateboards" are skyboards with Jovocian Turbine thrusters (Way, way, way smaller versions than the ones on the Citadel of Bis Anu). The boots are indeed Boots of Speeds, that enhance the velocity they can reach with the turbines.

Their big weaknes I'd say is that, because of their small size, the turbines can't have a direct link to the generators. So instead, they're all linked via tiny portals to the main ones powering the city...

The engineer in the Immortal Storage area is wearing regulation Arcanian uniform for his station, which is what Pilot wears.

Let me clarify: Pilot is on the right. The lighter parts on the googles are the lenses.

@V Alright. As a Seen Servant, Pilot has no visible eyes, to distinguish her from other beings. She does however have goggles that go over where her eyes would be. Her uniform and the goggles and her haircut are regulation for engineers from Arcania.
The engineer seen in page 13 is wearing the goggles, haircut, and uniform because he's an Arcanian engineer. He's not a seen servant, so you can make out the black ovals for eyes behind the lenses of his goggles.
There are no black ovals behind the lenses of Pilot's goggles.

I can only assume that as Mr Lying's love interest (see page 8, last panel, Igon's expression), it is Rain's plot-given duty to be tortured and/or slaughtered in a most horrible fashion, while our hero is forced to watch.

Well... since using the death of a loved one as motivation for a character is one of the oldest (if undoubtedly effective) tricks in the writer's repetoire, technically I'm disturbingly uncreative. :smallbiggrin:

I guarantee, I will not be going the way of "Hold loved one X in bad situation Y to illicit response Z from hero A". I'm intending for this tale to use as few cliches as possible.

For example, let's look at Lex's recent betrayal.
He starts out appearing as someone connected with the group through a relationship with one of their fathers (Hugo Lawrence), who isn't on good terms with his daughter (Steph).
Because of his position he attends the meeting between Nimhelvin, the diplomat and representative for the Moon Elf Empire, and Councilman Lawrence, one of the leaders of Arcania. Here, he hears about what will happen to Arcania if they resist the Empire's advances. He gets scared, and is horrified by the prospect of his entire culture and civilisation seeming to have never existed in all but the span of a generation. He certainly doesn't want to betray Arcania and his friends, but he will do anything to ensure that Arcania lives on in some way, shape, or form for future generations.
So, he starts working his way into a new position, as a new friend of the group. Here, he can work his whiles to learning new information. Igon and Rain are both children of two other Councilmen (Haizea Minoblendy and Arthur Morgan, respectively). A few failed saving throws over the course of weeks and he's got the information he needs sneaked out of their skulls.
That gives him the means to enact his plan. He opens the gate into the city. With the shield up, that's completely worthless, but the fact that someone did it is cause enough for concern and a meeting is called of the Council. This gets him a reason to be in city hall.
From there, he dons his Robe of Blending and his Mask of Lies (I changed the fluff description to a bandana over the mouth and nose because the original was, well, hideous) and sneaks through the building to it's core and the city's shield generator. He doesn't want to turn it off, because that leaves way for the Council to turn it back on, so instead he destroys it completely.

Now, throughout all of this, Lex has had to make sacrifices. He's kept secrets of untold magnitude from his new friends, and he's ensured that their final few days in Arcania (And, possible, final few days, period) are good and merry. He genuinely doesn't want to see anyone die, but he knows it's something he can't avoid to save his culture.

So, Lex isn't your typical "Friend turned traitor" character. He really wants to be friends with the group, even though he had to use them to bring ruin to Arcania. He's not a full-blown traitor to the nation, because he's doing what he believes is the best option left to them, even though it results in their effective annihilation.

Don't worry, we can still hate his guts. :smallwink:

I imagine it would be pretty tricky too. A Grisgol is basically a construct powered by the phylactery of a Lich.

EDIT: Okay, I've just been bored and started crunching some numbers:

Assuming I stick to my goal of 72 story-relevant pages per book (Of 100 overall, though I'll only be publishing the story pages here), and that I go with the 5 books I have listed at the moment, it'll be a total of 360 story pages.

With a 2/week output schedule, that'll take me 180 weeks or roughly 3-1/2 years to get through, or 36 weeks per book.

I welcome the challenge :smallamused:

Those keeping an eye on the twitter on page 1 will probably notice that it says "#21", rather than "#19". That's because I'm presently working on getting as many comics put together as I can (I'm aiming for comics 19-24) so that I have as little work to do over the upcoming holidays as possible. This also means there'll be a zero percent chance of me updating late :smallwink:

Inside the various sections for the future books, you'll also find (In most cases) a corresponding banner for the book, which may offer some tantalising sneak peeks at who may be showing up.

Lastly, it's worth noting that this is a story that, to the best of my knowledge, is rivalled only by Stick itself in terms of scale on this site. This storyline, assuming I don't miss an update or anything goes hideously wrong, is set to end on the 9th of December, 2010.

Here is an example of what happens when I rush things (Which is odd because I made this when I was bored and had free time). The text bubbles are too small, so the text cramps up about the sides and looks ugly. The pointing hand looks more like he's horizontally giving her the finger, so part of the joke is lost. Their comparative heights are off, and he's missing his gloves entirely. You can't even perceive half the detail on the sapphire itself, which is the entire point of the joke.

Now, I could hold to a ~1/day schedule, but my art quality is greater if I have this 2/week schedule we have now. A ~1/day schedule would result in issues like the ones in the image above, it looks alright at a glance, but if you actually sit and look at it it has quite a few issues.
