T'is the place to show-off your art, this is the place where the judges will decide, good or not, you can post here your art!
(kinda like The showcase, only with giving help, criticism, compliments, etc.)
Help the artists so they may become great like Dr. Bath or Mr_Saturn!
This thread is also made to reduce the independent 'help, new avatarist' threads.

Rules :
You may only talk about the art posted here and or if you are a artist and want help, or simply your work judged by more experienced artists, or if you need help with art programs.

All styles accepted(hand-drawn, OOTS, Erfwold, etc.)

Please also tell the art program you are using.
The following art pograms, and their homepages where you can download them.

MS Paint(Comes automatic with Windows and most PC's)
Inkscape (http://www.inkscape.org/)
Fireworks (http://www.adobe.com/products/fireworks/)(note, program is not free)
Irvanview (http://www.irfanview.com/) (note, not a great artprogram, but it is good for Resizing and making the background see-through)
SodiPodi (http://artlinux.wetpaint.com/page/Sodipodi?t=anon)(note, it is a vector based program)

Yup, and the shield should be a square or a lengthened square, Romans to my knowledge, didnt use round shields.
The mouth a bit higher.

I am in no way new, but neither is Ichneumon. I'm going to be needing to draw a lot of dragons soon, so I've been trying to put together a useable model:

To Ichneumon, lookin' good, your style it snazzy, although subtly different to OotS. Nothin' wrong with round roman sheilds, it just means it's not a late Roman leigonary is all. Rather than bring the mouth up, I would lower the eyes slightly as it's a male and they have slighlty lower eyes,

Overall: good, maybe minor changes, but mostly stylistic choices.

To Lyinginbedmon, those dragons look a little puppety, but I suppose that's to be expected due to the template. Also the heads are a bit big.

Overall: If you can possibly avoid it, remove the lines halfway up the leg, otherwise, they look good, if slightly mal-nourished.

Hmm. At first look, was thinking something along the lines of "omg n00b lol ths haz bin dun lots b4!!!1!" only, you know, politer and more intellectual, but looking at it again it's more general than past attempts, and having links to all the How Tos is a good idea (though there might be another one elsewhere? I forget, but it doesn't really matter anyway). There wasn't an Illustrator How To?

State-state, assuming you're trying to get Oots style, the circular head is a pretty big part of it. Especially when it's as irregular as that, it looks kinda childish. The blade of the sword's kinda neat, but don't forget the crossguard or equivalent (I don't think Viking swords had much of one, for example).

LazyJamaican(?), I'm not sure, but I think the dragons had mostly straight lines on the head, and I believe you can usually see both eyes and the claws are less curvy. I'd have to check to be sure, though.

My turn! I haven't finished this request yet (still need weapons and a few details), but I'm liking the way it's going so far so much that I'd like to get it as right as possible. It's supposed to be half tiefling with "ashen brown" skin, a "black ivory" horn and a scar (described as looking like a second mouth, tossing up whether to stick with a circle or make it like an oots-style mouth) and half tiefling in disguise.

That is officially made of win! I really like it, it has good comedy value! I'd better do another avatar soon, I'm getting out of practice :smallfrown:

Serp - That looks pretty good to me...but I must admit I don't like the circle scar, I think it would look better as a line, but everything else looks spot on.

Assuming that's shadow on the face, instead of it being a straight line down the face, curve it inwards. Makes the face look a little less flat, or some such.

Well, what with the background, think about him. Is he a dark space conqueror from another galaxy? Then draw that volcano as a dark space volcano from another galaxy, and draw dark space smoke from another galaxy. Add to the feeling a bit, you know? A cute fuzzy bunny wouldn't live on the same kind of volcano that an evil zombie-wizard would.

The character itself is awesome, though. I wish I could draw like that.

When you're new at avataring, i really don't recommend shading. Although yours is very simple, crappy shading is uglier than no shading at all.

The head shape is still off, and the eyes still look pretty bad. And sword handles shouldnt be ovals, they should be rectangles. ^^

These are nice  . The only thing i can really say is that you could use even darker tones for the shadows, but that could be caused by the scanner.

As for the oil paintings; get your hands on a digital camera!

Again, I've never used Inkscape but with the GIMP 2.2.14 (I think you can do it when you create a new image in 2.2.17, not sure though) oddly enough you set it by using the scale image option in the image menu, you set the new size and then just below it you set the resolution.

For paint these are pretty fantastic, there is a limit to what paint can do and from viewing these you make the best of the program. In fact I think the only better paint avatars I've seen have been Kurnours.

As for improvements, well I think the eyes are a little close together, especially on the guy on the left, and the sword doesn't look right, but apart from that nothing major. On the dwarf a slightly lighter shade of black on the beard and head might have helped make it clearer, but that's only a minor quibble.

All in all great work!

Try the Eggplant tutorial on the website, that should get you on your feet, it's the easiest modeling program I've ever used but bound to be a little tricky if all you've worked with is something like Bryce that uses Boolean modeling. The toon tutorial shows the same method (with a tweak here or there) that I used to get the outline on the models.

If you're used to 3dMax or Gamespace just remember it's instanced, you have to go to object mode, create it, then figure mode to rig it, then there's sequence and scene mode... it may seem a little bit of a pain but it's harder to mess up when you start animating and whatnot. But yeah, good luck!

A word of advice: Next time try saving it .PNG, .JPG lowers the quality of the picture (but it does lower the file size too)

Example: My first avatar

This first picture is .JPG

Now take a look at the .PNG version

It's a lot cleaner, isn't it? Do you see the diffrence? If not, try recolouring the .JPG then the .PNG

The shading is good, but I think the sword handle is a little weird...

I think the problem is that the body is too long and the head is a little small. Also the lines on the arms and legs could do with being thicker.

Omicroncubed
2007-12-09, 08:42 AM
I made a few changes to the singer. I bent the legs a tad, made a bigger head, made a shorter torso, put some thickness in the arms and legs and threw in sunglasses and a golden chain and the result was this:
http://i134.photobucket.com/albums/q105/Lambdaomega/Singerforthetrailer4.png

In my own opinion it looks good now but I still need to be sure.

(The sunglasses were randomizers idea and it was a good idea I admit)
