So, I've been browsing the internet and I found a few mentionings of internet radio run by regular people. As in you sign up for a website, plug in a microphone, and next thing you know, you're playing records and talking about paris hilton to an audience of two insomniacs and a guy who thought this was a porn site.

For no apparent reason, this seems really fun to me. Actually I've always wanted to be on the radio, which is my secret dream that I abandoned as a career choice.

So, playgrounders, what internet user-based radio sites do you know of/use? Do we have any internet djs among us?

Hmm... don't know of that. Sounds like it.. could?... be interesting. In a "YouTube-random-crap" sort of way. :smalltongue:

Currently tuned in to SmoothLounge for some ambient low key music.

You'd probably have more success and an easier time with a podcast. Those are really popular with all the kids these days. Despite the name, it's not iPod specific. You make a recording with your mic, save it to .mp3, and put it on an RSS syndicated site. Users subscribe to your RSS feed and get each new episode. They can listen on their own time rather than the 4 hours a week that you feel like talking.

I like Split Infinity radio (www.siradio.fm). They play the sort of music I like and intersperse the songs with commentary on MMORPGs and other video games. Their DJs are... variable. I like aMUSIC and Chaotica best, and while there are some whose dulcet tones make me switch off immediately by and large it's worth checking out.

Also, adult content. Definitely with the adult content.

Hmm, I stream ClassicFM becuase I don't have a radio, but that's a professional radio station. I don't think I'd ever listen to user-based radio becuase I can't really imagine it being particularly better than stuff where they actually have time and money to throw at programs.

I'm a huge advocate for Pandora (http://www.pandora.com/).
It's like Yahoo Radio or MSN Radio or whatever, except that you create and maintain all of your OWN stations instead of listening to the pre-made crap out there.
Oh. And there are no on-air commercials. At all. Simply a small, barely noticable add on the player which is even removable if you feel like giving a small donation to the site.

I miss Pandora... They banned the use of it outside the US, and I'm sad for it.

I love Pandora. I'd use it more often, if my internet was better. They banned use of it outside the US? Why? (also Who?, and How?)

Check this out. (http://www.internetradioindex.com/i-probe/ip_radio_4b.html)
Or this. (http://www.taxi.com/members/links-radio.html)
Or, a search of: "internet radio" "streaming music" program stations "commercial free" turned up: this. (http://search.yahoo.com/search;_ylt=A0geu9BkwGJHJvIA6bNXNyoA?p=%22internet +radio%22+%22streaming+music%22+program+stations+% 22commercial+free%22&y=Search&fr=&ei=UTF-8)

The royalties associated with internet radio were (fairly) recently raised. A lot of the smaller Net Stations had to either shut down or become subscription based because of it.
Pandora's answer was to only allow listeners from the U.S. (where it's run).

You simu'd my edit.
I added a few more things for you to check out up there Skip.

Also, anyone using Firefox apparently there's an IE version that I never knew about, so:
Most people:
Download the StumbleUpon (http://www.stumbleupon.com/) add-on and make "music" one of your interests. I've found TONS of cool sites from this little gadget. :smallwink:

Interesting sidenote - StumbleUpon was how I found GiantITP originally.

I used to use pandora but then I found http://projectplaylist.com/

So much better but it's not "radio" technically.
