The cycle begins a new.

The sun shined on the day of dicovery. It was a mild winter and then in spring the flowers and plants were quick to grow. The prey were breeding quicker than before and predators had different and easier prey to get.

Krylf Evolution and society; First period

The Krylf don't seem to do anything surprising this period. They flourish, and develop more mental abilities - there's no need for physical evolution.
Thanks to the low population and the plentiful amount of nutrients, there seem to be no conflicts between the different packs in their territory.

Contact with other races also remains at a minimum because of the Krylf's low intelligence. They aren't curious about whatever exists outside of their own lands.

All in all, this remains only a slow, boring start for the sentient race.

((The Krylf's current society is described in the recruitment thread, but I'm copying it here, for readers))

The Krylf are a race of small winged reptiles who live on islands or along coasts. They move in packs that can range from 10 to 50 Krylfs. Although they hunt alone, they are quite social animals, spending their entire life (around 10-15 years currently) with the same mate once they have chosen.
The live in caves and tunnels in clifs, with one pack sometimes living with 20 in one cave, or each specimen having one of their own, depending on the circumstances. A pack usually lives in harmony alone, but fights and vetes can errupt over territories.
They seem to have discovered basic tools, but have found little use for them.

Krylf have dark, smooth scales covering their body. The color serves a camouflaging purpose on the clifs when they are outside. They have four paws, a tail with a vicious stinger and 2 wings, growing from their back. Their head is, unlike most reptiles, rather wide and high and placed close to their top shoulders, with short extensions to the side to enchance their hearing. Their eyes are placed in the middle of their head, typical for predators.
When flying, a Krylf's lower body hangs down, because their wings are unable to carry the whole body by themselves.

Krylf hunt by climbing to the top of the clifs they live in, then throwing themselves down at the sea. At mere inches away from the water surface, they strike with their tails, then pulling up with their wings, flying back with their prey to their cave, or flying back to the top for another attempt.
Krylf live on a diet of -primarily- small fish, insects, and seaweed.

First post! I might pick out some indivicuals for Roleplaying, but that'll have to wait.

Specimen

Kir - Kir is a young male Krylf. He reaches adulthood in a few months, but can already take care of himself, like all Krylf around this age. They all reach 'official' (i.e: they can do what they want) at 5 years old, bu only once one finds a mate and settles with him or her for life, he is considered one socially (i.e: he has a chance of becoming the pack leader, can make suggestions about the pack's plans, etc.). Therefore, he's one of the many males around trying to show of to the females, making daring jumps, trying to catch as big fish as possible, gathering corals, and in general looking as though as he can. Small fights are not unusual in these periods, but Kir cannot compete with some of the stronger males. His stinger is however surprisingly sharp, and he is a competent swimmer and flyer.

The Quil'Iarth'Na

As the sun rose over the treetops, the first members of the Quil'Zar pack were waking up. All except Quil'Zar'Ha that is. The young Quil'Iarth'Na had been up since first light, staring at the golden sun orb with all his might.

Quil'Zar'Ha was different to most Quil'Iarth'Na in that he had a thirst for knowledge. When most Quil'Iarth'Na would be dividing up a carcass, Quil'Zar'Ha would rather poke into it, and study it's different parts.

However, today was a different day for Quil'Zar'Ha. Today was his day. On this day, the rest of the pack had agreed to let him lead the hunt.

He would not disapoint them

.................................................. .................................................. ....

A few minutes later, and the Quil'Zar pack was feasting on another kill. The main difference was, that this beast was a lot bigger than the Quil'Zar's usual prey. Maybe aiming for the joints does work.... Thought the rest of the pack, as Quil'Zar'Ha explained the logic behind it.

The Zerajal

The Zerajal have made little contact with other species, only interacting with those who enter their lush forests, The Zerajal have yet to leave their forests, for they prefer the canopies and the tree tops where they are expert in their woodcraft.

The Zerajal have many tribes in the tree's and sometimes these tribes vie for dominance, though more often than not these fights end with only a few small fights, which are over rather quickly.

The Zerajal hunt down and kill their prey, often taking down animals larger than themselves by use of numbers

The Klujnkt

Thus far the Klujnkt are somewhat introverted as a society - they prefer to discuss things amongst themselves than to venture forward into the unknown parts of their world (be it in search of other species or new areas to inhabit).

This communication between individuals has suggested some interesting ideas, such as the use of small stick as tools, to aid them in their labours, as well as to enhance their gesticulation (which is quite helpful when trying to get a point across). This also continues their slow mind-expanding journey of existence.

At this time one individual specifically deems mention: Loktcca is considered something of a purveyor of wisdom (in as much as a race as unadvanced as the Klujnkt are currently can produce wise men)- he will attempt to offer an answer to anything put to him, and his responses are usually held in regard, to cogitated upon. Whether they are true insights, or merely word-play is something not often disputed (though there are some who may raise it in the future).

The Yas

So far, the Yas are if not comfortable, are surviving decently enough. They prefer to stay in their caves, even though their lives are not easy there, because they know the caves. The Yas refuse to get involved with anything unless they know enough about it.

The communication between the Yas reveals that, as always, there is nothing much that can harm them.

Still, they spend some of their time communicating developing their language, and sharing new ideas, so thats a plus.

Also, they share techniques on mushroom cultivating, benefiting the species as a whole.

But the most extraordinary thing is, they find a small patch of the intelligence-increasing Goldwater. Very small. Barely enough for one Yas to sip. They decide to let the youngest adult Yas, a fellow named Whitewing for his well, white wings, intending to watch the free entertainment of Whitewing being basically omniscient (though they don't know that) for a little while, then mentally deflating as he loses his immense intelligence. Suprisingly, he doesn't seem to lose the intelligence. He still flew around in the happy daze the drinkers of Goldwater always did. So, the other Yas waited. And waited. When he didn't show any signs of letting up, the Yas finally started listening to what he had to say. He claimed that he could sense where the Goldwater was. The Yas, again decided to humor Whitewing, and followed him, taking the few mushrooms they had at their previous meeting place as a snack.

Extraordinarily, Whitewing was right. The Yas found a cave they hadn't before, and it was filled with a massive lake of Goldwater. Needless to say, they began planting mushrooms immediately so they could stay there. When they drank the Goldwater, the other Yas did not seem to permanently gain intelligence, like Whitewing, but they did gain the ability to sense Goldwater. Needless to say, Whitewing was hailed as a hero, and became a kind of chief to the Yas.

Unfortunately for the Yas, many of their mushrooms failed or became poisonous, so it wasn't all good.

Solons

For my own convenience in tracking, i'll always post a 'before', tracking my races stats before this turn.

Brains : 4 - Not terribly intelligent individually, Solons are at least smart enough to cooperate
Strength : 4 - Pack hunters, not individually dangerous
Toughness : 7 - Solons, given food, will recover from nearly any injury.
Agility : 5 - Agile enough..
Grasping Appendages : 2 - Solons have rudimentary fingers on their forlegs which they use to drag corpses.
Language : 2 - Solons vocal communication is extremely rudimentary
Rudimentary Hivemind : 6 - Solon packs act as an individual of many parts at short distances, at long distances they use their vocals.
Bacterial Reproduction : 6 - Solons themselves are actually extremely colonies of extremely specialized bacteria. As such, any surplus of food becomes new solons.

Solons have no memories of their earlier ancestors. This is their history.

One day the first one started moving. It ate, budded, it was two. Now it is many. And the many are not all the same. It can be (6, number concepts still unknown), but more than that is too noisy, it becomes many again (cannot have a group of more than 6 at this point).

Appearance : With roughly the body plan of a dog, Solons are pale grey, moist, and covered in black rigid patches. Their 'heads' are covered in round black beads, and they have small cilia growing in a frond on their necks and backs. Their front and back limbs are covered from about halfway down with the stiff material, though the front limbs have segmented 'fingers' arranged just above the base of the limb.

Their diet is anything easily digestable. Bugs, berries, fecal matter, animals, dead animals...

The land :
A big, swampy valley filled with unmoving muggy air, their environment is (by our standards)overwhelmingly hot, and terribly humid. Fire is an impossibility, and decay is everywhere. At one end of the valley is a river, which must run close to a volcanic vent, as it is warm already. Frequently, dead fish will be found floating in the river (the river is fed by an offshoot of a much larger river, everything here is evolved to the high sulphur content in the water).

Food grows everywhere in the fertile soil. The squelchy, muddy, nearly impassible soil.

Ease of travel : 1
Food and Water : 10
Natural Resources : 3
Safety : 6

Prime units 1-2 and 3-4 split herds, make hunt easy. Prime grows to 6, still has more food. Prime makes subprime herd. Prime decide, not leave subprime alone, alone make lonely. Prime Concentrate on split, makes new prime different! *level up music*

Skali

Ahh, Spring. Spring meant food was going to be plentiful, what with all the plants beginning to grow and animals trying to find mates. A lone Skali male, distinguishable from the others only by his more lazy predisposition, sat with his tail up against a tree with his hide tinged a brownish colour, trying to look like a rather large root. It was effective enough, nothing was bothering him.

Gurgle

Hungry. He looked around for anything immediately edible, which was nothing; he'd eaten all the plants and easy prey within a five tree radius over the past weeks.

Then he saw his first chance at real food. It was one of the tree-climbers, a large one too, it would provide food for a few days until it began to rot. Even more fortunately, it was coming directly at him; probably planning on climbing the tree he was sat up against. Catching it was going to be easy, with how the stupid thing was acting. Just a matter of knocking it over and crushing the neck.

As it turned out, not even that was needed. The climber was being chased by a female Skali, and with some very lucky timing, both of the Skali hit the climber's chest at the same time, crushing its chest and killing it instantly. On the downside, it gave the victors a nasty headache. They raised their sails in agitation at one another briefly, but quickly calmed down as their situation set in. Spring. Food. Male and a Female.

Eventually, this sort of behavior led to packs becoming common amongst the Skali (resulting in more advanced methods of communication). Ambushing became more prevalent, as a result of their increasing ability to blend into their environment. Finally, their skulls began to thicken as more ramming incidents took place.

Kitani

It was a good day for hunting. Karis and Choran loped from one of the higher, safer forests where many of the Kitani lived, down the rocks to the valley nearby. Inside were the larger, more dangerous predators, but also the ones who carried the most meat.

"Be calm, Karis," said Choran, the older one, bracingly, as they stalked the forest floor.

"But this is... exciting," said Karis," I just want to do well."

"You will do fine, but if you let the cold ones find you rather than the other way around, you will not do well at all," said Choran, not bothering to add the danger in that statement. The "cold ones" were the collective naming for the reptiles the Kitani met. They could tell they were somewhat similar, but that the bodies were colder, thus the name. The two Kitani spotted one of their distant relatives now. Karis managed to stay quiet and nodded Choran. He carried a wooden spear he had sharpened with a chunk of obsidian, and he used it to goad the hissing reptile, keeping it at bay. Meanwhile, the older Kitani snuck up for the kill, laying it about with a blow to the head with a rock.

"Excellent," said Choran," Taren will be pleased."

"How come he does not hunt anymore, Choran?"

"He is too old now... I think he is best where he is, leading our people..." With that, they lift the corpse back to their home.

Skali

With the advent of packs, leaders among the Skali began to make an appearance, usually the fastest or strongest one in a pack. The most recent leader enjoyed a new development, a name. Or something as close to a name as they could manage. Without any complex vocal cords, the Skali had taken advantage of their ability to change colours as a way to easily distinguish one from another. This particular leader was known as Black to the others.

Black was a leader not just because he was stronger than the rest, but because he was also smarter than most others, or so he thought. It was his firm belief that if they had nests like the tree-climbers, they would have an easier time raising their young, who were something of a nuisance when the pack was hunting. Unfortunately, he couldn't climb trees, nor could he find the trees the nests grew in. Black, rather annoyed by the first development, decided that if he couldn't get up there to see what one was like, he would bring one down to him. It took some time and a headache, but after an hour of ramming a tree, one of the nests finally fell, revealing an unconscious tree-climber (that would later become lunch) and the secret behind the nests.

It was remarkable.

The tree-climbers had used dead leaves and vines to...make this nest. Black could only barely comprehend what it was, but glorious realization slowly dawned upon his already sore head. The nests didn't grow, the tree-climbers took a bunch of useless things and made them useful. It was a brand new concept to him and it felt overwhelming. Black refused to let the opportunity pass, and he was determined to not be made a fool of by a bunch of meaty, succulent tree-climbers.

In a number of days, Black had a very basic grasp of the concept, and it took him several moments to convince himself that dead, inedible objects could have some kind of purpose. Then they found something. It was large, smooth, and made of stone. More importantly, it was only a shell, like some kind of giant, stony egg. Black was convinced they had to find a way inside this egg. Eggs were always good food, and Black had a sneaking suspicion that he could make the useless outside husk into something useful once it had been emptied of its eggy goodness.

They rammed, they scratched, they tried to dig, all at Black's demand that they open it up.

I'll save a couple points for after the reveal of what happens to the man-made structure. I have a couple ideas for how their evolution can go depending on what happens.

Skali

Black raised his sail in triumph as the massive stone egg finally opened up. This would mean food for weeks! Black seized the moment and dashed toward the crack, mouth agape as he prepared to shove a few mouthfuls of sweet, creamy egg down his gullet.

But there were no mouthfuls of food. Nothing you'd find in an egg anyway. It was dark, chilly, and there was, oddly, a flat surface to walk on inside the egg. Black couldn't identify anything, it was all distinctly...Alien. There were corners and angles and straight edges that made the Skali feel uncomfortable. This did not keep them from wrecking the place in a search for edible items. One of the Skali gave a good whack to a white box that appeared to contain another Skali, and as it turned out it did not. Instead, the general atmosphere of the place began to change: the temperature rose by a few degrees, the smell of the place became notably different, vision became wavy and distorted, and the Skali inside felt a great deal sleepier.

And sleep they did, but it was nothing like their ordinary sleep. It was filled with strange sights and sounds, but it was still comforting in a way. Black was rather content with his discovery, and insisted that everyone sleep within the stony egg with no complaints.

The gas did, eventually, run out and ceased to fill the area, but by then the Skali had moved in permanently and used it as a hub for sleeping, hunting, reproducing and every day life in general. The inside of the building itself inspired Black to try and make something similar out of rocks and wood, much like the boxes he found inside it initially.

Last two points left over:
Toughness +1 EP, to 6 (if sleeping in a room filled with natural gas doesn't make you tougher...)
Housing +1 EP, to 1 (nothing more than flimsy huts with the exception of the one they found)

OOC:
I've just been going at it in a matter that seems appropriate. In my mind, the Skali are just below Homo Erectus in terms of intelligence, as they're only just grasping how things work (if Homo Erectus were more predatory hunters than scavengers). Granted they'll go up a number of pegs after this round.

Just have fun with whatever you think is good.

The Quil'Iarth'Na

Quil'Zar'Ha was pleased.

Not only was he the new chief of his pack, but although it was early yet in his reign, his people were already prospering.

His new hunt techniques, of staying camouflaged and aiming for the joints, had had the major effect of increasing the pack's red meat intake, as they were eating larger and larger kills from higher and higher up the food chain. This meant that the pack was getting a lot smarter, stronger, and tougher from all the protein and iron contained within the tribe's latest kills.

This was the beginning of a new age for the Quil'Iarth'Na...

Suddenly, a voice cried out, interrupting his dreamy reverie.

"See Jump-Claw! Big Jump-Claw! What do?" It was the voice of Quil'Zar'Taj, one of Quil'Zar'Ha's most trusted scouts.

"Hide. Leaf-roll. All attack when me attack. Go!"

At these words, the whole pack springs into action. Meat is hidden, burrows are covered, and all members hide, be they strong or be they frail.

When at last the Jump-Claw (Smallish Forest Lion) saunters into the clearing, it is with no awareness of its fate. It paces around, sniffs at the air, and then curls up on the ground.

A few tense seconds later, a volley of quills arcs into the air. This is soon followed by many other volleys, forming a rain of black death falling down from the sky.

Many miss, both those that hit do their work. The Jump-Claw is immobilised with the first volley, and dead with the second. With in second that ravenous Quil'Iarth'Na pack descends upon the freshly killed beast, hungry for blood.

It is a good day, and the kill was celebrated by all.

At night, while the rest of the Quil'Zar pack sleep off their food, Quil'Zar'Ha stays awake, staring into the moonlight and thinking This not so hard...

The Klujnkt

Eventually it came to pass that Loktcca the Sage passed away (they say he was so immersed in his own (primitive) thoughts that he did not even notice as he fell down to the forest floor).

Needles to say, this time was a turbulent one for the society of the Klujnkt: bereft of their answers to their questions, some suggested a regime of even more stict isolation, devoted to pure thought.

The leader of this group was one called 'Njon-Locktc' (the second part of his name being a reference to the former character), who cited disocveries such as a symbolic number system (arrived at through much time spent visualising such things, by many Klujnkt) as a clear indicator of the virtues of such a manner of lifestyle.

The antipode to this was another Klujnkt named 'Vorijl' (the name itself being an intentional break with tradition, by not including a clicking sound in it). Vorijl advocated a cultural lifestyle that, whilst not being a great shift, certainly differed quite a lot; she argued that they should put more effort into using their knowledge and abilities to attempt to subdue the other creatures in the environs, so that they might expand their culture.

Finally it came to an epic (at least in terms of what the culture had thus far experienced) battle...of the respective locutary capabilities of these two figureheads. They thoroughly debated the positions, in as best a way as the language would allow

Many other Klujnkt gathered round to spectate, as volley after volley of crafted words and gestures and the images thereby invoked were cast around.

Kitani

The Kitani begin to consolidate and form communities. Following the oldest and wisest among them, Taren, each small patch of forest has it's own set of senior Kitani making sure food is found and the younger Kitani learn how to hunt properly. However, they all communicate when possible, though this is limited to the occasional party of fit, healthy Kitani, who are generally busy enough hunting anyhow.

Males and females work together without much prejudice, as there isn't much difference in their physiology other than appearance. Mentally, males tend to be inquisitive, passionate, and active. Females are more laid-back and dependable, though they're just as curious about the world around them.

As the seasons wear on, the Kitani become ever stronger, but don't utilize their new skills as much as they could. However, having explored more of the land around them, and trying to categorize the things they find, they realize the need for a safer environment, and more supplies in order to have time to learn.

The Quil'Iarth'Na

Quil'Zar'Ha was bemused. And this made him afraid.

All was going well, as Quil'Zar'Ha had implemented a caste sytem to organise his tribe. This caste system, although simple, was very useful as it allowed different members of the rapidly growing Quil'Zar tribe to focus on their strengths. Of course, all members still carried the older skills, and still could function as hunter in a pinch. The three castes, and their current focus, are: The Scout Caste, focusing on speed and stealth; the Warrior Caste, focusing on strength and tactics; and the Inventor Caste, who had recently developed sharp rocks to skin kills. Each caste had it's distinctive ornamentation: The Scout Caste always had leaves pinned to their spines for camouflage, the Warrior Caste were always wearing bit of beast hide on their spikes to look intimidating, and the Inventor Caste would all be dressed completely differently, as they are the most eclectic and random of the castes.

This ambience of discovery and organisation was soon shattered by the arrival of the obviously flustered master of the Scout Caste, Quil'Zar'Taj, arrived with strange news: "The Quil'Har'Ta river has turned into a shiny yellow thing!"

Shortly after hearing the news, Quil'Zar'Ha and a few fellow members of the Inventor Caste leave for the river, guarded by a contingent of the Warrior Caste.

Upon arrival at the river, Quil'Zar'Ha proceeds to grab a stick and poke the shiny substance.

So please do not try to contact them/throw suprises at them/attack them before I have a chance to catch up.

Solons Turn 3 :

Prime-of-the-Dark was curious. And a little fearful. Hesitating in the cave, one of Darkprime went back. At the cave entrance, another herd sat, curiously waiting for Prime to return. This group was named Chysis, after a plant in the area. Prime hesitated. How to share the discoveries? Their language is not complex enough for the 'wagon', or for the 'new land' concepts.

Ah, inspiration strikes. Prime exchanged a unit with Chysis! Not only did he share the knowledge of the cave, but he learned of what his people had been doing! His unit 8 hooted, requesting that Chysis accompany him. Hooting back, Chysis agreed.

Cautiously, the 16 Solons explore the jungle, practicing their tactics on the new prey animals found within. After bringing down a large plant-eater, they grow a new proto-herd, naming it Sync. Sending it back with new instructions, they begin, for the first time, to use their Hive-Mind as a method of quick information sharing.

The new proto-herd goes back. It trades a member with two herds. each of the two herds sends out two members, and trades with a further 4 herds. Quickly, knowledge of the cave, of the jungle, of the wagon propagate throughout the Solon race. With the invention of hive sharing comes a new level of co-operation on hunts.

Though hunting as the opportunity comes, Darkprime and Chysis are also roaming freely, exploring this new land. Hooting softly to each other, they explore happily. Their originating swamp is quickly becomming overpopulated with Solons. As the ones with the information, they can also spread their choices through the transfer. Darkprime and Chysis agree. There is a need for overall leadership. And an opportunity for power.
