I like to post my first attempt at creating an avatar in inkscape, but friggen photobucket doesn't accept any of the file types inkscape can create. Any ideas?

What filetypes are you trying to use?

You do have an account with photobucket, correct?

Yep, I have a photobucket account. They take gif, jpg, jpeg, png, and bmp. None of which I seem to be able to make inkscape save as.

After saving it, go to file->export bitmap. That should do it

Okay, here we go. Prepare to be underwhelmed.

I followed along with the Oots Avatar tutorial for the most part, but branched off when it came to clothes. I know it looks kinda crappy (my god, the hair!:smalleek: ), but I'm rather proud of my first try.

Comment and criticism accepted.

Not half bad.

not bad for your first try...i mean, some people still get it wrong the 100th time they try it

You can trace the hair too, so that you have a more natural looking one...just look in the comic for a style that you find suitable :smallwink:

For you're first try? That's pretty good.

I have seen far far worse than that on the note of first tries. That's something to be glad of I think, good job.

Bayar is right too, there's certainly two consecutive pages in On the Origin of PCs that have served me well for haircuts...

It may be just me but it looks like the lines could stand to be abit thicker, other than that its a very good first try

Thanks for the comments everybody. :)

I did the hair in about ten minutes, freehand with the path tool. That was fun. :smalleek: About the line thickness, I used 1.5 pixels if I recall correctly. I notice now there are some other measurements I could use, like points. I'll have to play around with it. What does everybody else use?

Also, I've got Origins, so maybe I'll flip through that tonight and play around with a few styles. I saved a copy of both the male and female basic bodies (with no hair, of course), so that'll make it easier to play around with.

I'll be on from now until 9:30 pm (central US time), so I'll probably be inflicting some stuff on you guys tonight, if you're gonna be on.

I use a thickness of either 2 or 4 pixels, it depends on how close i want to stick to the origional OotS style or have lots of details(2 pixels), or when I regulalrly draw for fun in my thicker lined style.(4 pixels, like your avatar if I recall correctly.)

At the speed of light, I give you, VERSION 2!!!

http://i249.photobucket.com/albums/gg211/rickvoid/tutorial-1.png

I didn't like the arms, so I remade them.
The boots are now level, or at least fairly close to it.
I thickened the lines to 2 pixels, and I really like it.
The hair is much better. I just copied the circle head, deleted the bottom node, and then went to town with adjustments. Added a ponytail instead of those... behind the head... hair... thingies. *shudder* But I think I went a little crazy with those beads...

Me likey!

Here we go. Bigger! Spoilered for you convenience.

Hmm... brown bead didn't show up... will have to change the color. (Too close to the hair color.

Hmmm, so you saved it as a bitmap?

Try saving it as an PNG file, Photobucket (http://photobucket.com/) should accept it, atleast it accepts my PNG files...

Tried saving it as a png. Inkscape saved it as tutorial.png.svg

Yeah. It pretended the .png was part of them name and saved it as svg, completely ignoring the fact that I'd selected "guess from file extension".

Or hey, maybe I just don't know what the hell I'm doing.

Nice work.
You have a promising future at ABR.

Well, I don't know if I'm going to get into that, but who knows. :)

But now, I give you magic. :)

Ugh... these bitmap images aren't doing the original justice at all... I wonder if I can increase her size in inkscape so the bigger image is the better looking one...

Edit: Oh hells yes.

That generally does the trick.

Just remember to export as bitmap, it generally saves the picture as png, and there you could also increase the size of the picture.

rickvoid
2008-01-27, 05:31 PM
That's what I had been doing.

It was... well, just look at my last post. Open the two spoilers and compare them. First one was opened in image viewer and was increased. Second was increased as an svg in inkscape, then went png. Big difference.

Unless you mean open the png in inkscape, increase the size, then save... hmm.

I mean click expot Bitmap in inkscape and it comes up with a window. on the bottom shows where it will be saved. above that there are two boxes that say export size in hight and width. you just increase the amount of pixals in one, and then the other adjusts itself proportionatly.

Proportionately you say?
I did not know this!

Okay.

Photobucket was getting... untidy.

So I removed the old pictures and the links died. But, here are some high quality replacements.

http://i249.photobucket.com/albums/gg211/rickvoid/tutorialmagic.png

Now my male figure example is looking cold and naked. Time to whip up some clothes for him!

Edit: Or not. What the hell!? The file on my computer says she's the same size as the top one, but when I up load it to photobucket... argh!:smallfurious:
Ok. Relax. Slow breaths. I'll just remake the png. It wasn't hard. Whoo. :smallannoyed:

EditEdit: Ok. That still didn't work. It uploading a the thumbnail. Why?

Try using imageshack. (http://imageshack.us/) In my experience, it's just a lot easier and simpler to deal with. The only drawback is that it doesn't make a 'gallery' for you, but I don't really mind.

There. Finally got it.

I don't know why that torture was necessary. But apparently it was.

Now to move on.

ImageShack also adds a superfluous suffix to the filename, so when you delete a picture and upload the same picture again, it adds a new suffix and the old links don't work anymore, unlike with Photobucket where the original filename is held all the time.

He is Worf, son of Mog!

That was fun!!

Don't expect me to give him a bat'leh any time soon though. Way to intricate for now.

Edit: Now with hair and pants!
