Ok so I have a bunch of money to spend with one of my characters. I am fully decked out with armor and weapons. I some necessary items and whatnot. I have this urge to spend my money. I need some new item ideas. Which leads me to....

What is your favorite DnD item? And if you so desire, maybe an amusing anecdote to accompany?

I'll start, deck of many things. We had nothing better to do than play with our deck of many things. We weren't very high level so we didn't have many magic items at the time. Well we drew a card that disintegrated(or something like it) all magic items. Since four of us drew it at a time we were all affected. Well, we had a wizard in our group who for some reason was still carrying his book of spells.... Yeah he wasn't too happy about losing that. But I have to say it highly amusing.

Rod of Many Wands. Jack in 3 wands, and either blast, control, or heal-away. They do rip thru the wands pretty quickly, but is that not why we have an artificer or item-creationist wizard in the party?

Technically a spellbook is not a magic item, so the Talons card (the only one I can find that would get rid of magic items) would not affect it. The Ruin card would, but that one leaves magical gear intact.

Edit: Unless it's a Boccob's Blessed Book or something like that, in which case it is a magic item. If the only thing special about it is the spells written in it for the wizard to study, however, that isn't actually magical. It helps the wizard perform magic, but it is not itself a magic item.

Well it was one of our first meetings and I don't think the DM knew what he was doing... Getting the deck was a total fluke anyways. He just happened to roll it.

I'm guessing that that was in 2nd or 1st edition? In 3.x, the Deck of Many Things is a minor artifact, and thus doesn't show up on any of the tables where it could be "just rolled".

Actually, your title reminds me of something...

Robes of archmagi and petrified kittens
Cloaks of resistance and spell-storing mittens
Bags of devouring tied up with string
These are a few of my favorite things

Rings of evasion and iron bands of binding
Ioun stones and fire staves and potions of finding
A deck of illusions that's missing the king
These are a few of my favorite things

Bracers of armor and rings of protection
Shields enchanted with arrow deflection
Those funny horseshoes that can give your horse wings
These are a few of my favorite things

When the hellhound bites
When the wyvern stings
When my health looks bad,
I add in the bonus from my favorite things
And then I don't feel... sooo bad!

Thank you. We now return you to your scheduled thread.

Well, that's like, 12 kamajabillion times better than what I was writing...

My favorite two items have got to be the Boots of the Winterlands and the Ring of Substenance, in both cases for their secondary effects.

I hardly care about walking on snow, but I like the boots for the intrinsic endure elements.

I hardly care about the 'you don't have to eat' (I usually do anyway), but I like the ring for the 'only have to sleep two hours'.

Both of these are more flavor things than anything else: It's fun playing an orc that's tough enough that he only needs a little sleep, and can walk through the snow without a shirt on with no real problems. I usually ask the DM if I can spend the money, and make both of those effects (flavor-wise) intrinsic to the character and not intrinsic to the items. It may give me a slight edge if they're stolen, I suppose, but that hardly ever comes up.

Fun times. I usually have said half-orc complain he's hot while in snow.

Rod of Absorption.

For fighter builds.

Cause I'm the one with the weak will save.

I know you probably already have it, but...

Heward's Handy Haversack.

Extradimensional storage is pretty awesome in and of itself, but with the added ability that whatever you're looking for is always on the top of the pile? That's flat out amazing.

In fact, all the extradimensional storage items are awesome. They'd just be so freakin' handy if we had them in real life! I know on an average day I can find a whole lot more uses for a backpack that defies the laws of physics than I can for a mystical stone floating around my head or footgear that lets me walk more quietly or something.

Just remember not to put your extradimensional spaces into other extradimensional spaces...

EPIC WIN!

Er, yeah, favorite items. Gal-Ralan, certainly, for anyone who can get an odd Con score. Splitting bows and Shadow Striking swords too, and let's not forget the totally cheesy Amulet of Retribution.

I just have to say, you deserve a slow clap. The kind that evolves into a thundering round of applause.
*claps slowly, getting faster until it reaches an enormous round of applause*

Though it isn't a magic item, any kind of rope is useful. There's never enough rope.

Kudos, I tip my gigantic hat to you. Speaking of hats, hat of diguise is kind of cool. My favorite magic item has to be the folding boat as made famous by one of my old players who is no longer with us. (No, he's not dead yet. ) His cleric's folding boat saved us from a dragon turtle ( by jamming it's mouth open) and killed an evil priest by breaking his neck.

Immovable Rods. There was a whole thread on them a while back.

Bags of Tricks. If only for the comedy value. So far, in my campaign, it has been used twice:

First, against the party (in the battle where they found it), which culminated in the sorcerer pulling out a lion and throwing it at the party. In the middle of a glacial cavern.

I don't know what's funnier, the idea of the lion skittering around, his claws desperately trying to find purchase on the ice, or the look on the PC's faces as they watch this, or the look on the sorcerer's face as he watches all this...

And, Heward's Handy Haversack. One of a few things I've often wished existed in real life. If I ever get a RL "Wish", I might have to get one.

Belt of Healing is the best ever item especially in our group where no body wants to play the healer.

Tooth of Savnok is a steal at £2000gp.

Gloves of Groping are always a great thing even if they have no point what so ever.

Amulet of extra Amulet slots from MiC compendium is just cool.

Bracers of the Hunter are teh pwnage and every rogue/ninja should buy some ASAP.

10 foot pole FTW
