"The man who co-created the game Dungeons & Dragons and helped start the role-playing phenomenon is dead.

Gary Gygax died this morning at his home in Lake Geneva, Wisconsin, about 55 miles southwest of Milwaukee.

His wife, Gail Gygax, says he had been suffering from health problems for several years, including an abdominal aneurysm.

Gygax and co-creator Dave Arneson developed the role-playing game in 1974 and it went on to become 1 of the best-selling games ever. Dungeons & Dragons is considered the grandfather of fantasy role-playing games and has influenced video games, books, movies and inspired legions of adoring fans.

Gygax' wife says he always enjoyed hearing from the game's devoted fans about how the game influenced their lives."

It's always sad when someone dies.

Untill recently I used to play AD&D 2e, wich was the last edition Gygax participated in, I was hoping that Gygax did something else in the future and I think it's kind of sad that he did not live to see the 4th edition of the game he helped to create.

Alas, Gygax rolled a 1 on his survival check...

Also, there are two other threads open about this. Check FB and Gaming.

Hmmn. Before his death, Gygax was working for Troll Lord Games on the Castle Zagyg project for Castles & Crusades and had been for several years. I don't think he ever participated in 2e in an official capacity, though he wrote the odd Dungeon/Dragon magazine article for D20.

Some might say that it's some consolation that he won't have to see what wizards did to his system (although I'm unsure of what his opinion of the upcoming new edition actually was)

Regardless it's a sad day in nerdom today one of it's heroes is gone. He shall be missed.:smallfrown:

He was 69. And yeah, wizards did some things to D&D he probably disaproved but it was still his creation.

Gygax's only system was storytelling, he's probably up there right now chuckling about all our squabbling and sharing a good laugh with God about the sounds we mortals make when we roll.

RIP Gary Gygax, you did good.

i think the best thing we can do is play on, cherish what he gave us, and never forget our roots. his memory shall live on in each of us so long as we play with the true Gygaxian spirit, kill fast and without warning :smallamused:

Does death due to cardiovascular problems count as "old age"?

Dunno, but I don't know anyone who can cast any true resurrection spells. Maybe we can bend the rules and make an untrained UMD check. We could always use a scroll.

Wow.

Gotta figure out some kind've memorial.

The 3 core books of any system, 6 players, & running tomb of horrors-That is the type of memorial any DnDer should try to give.
