Well, it looks like we've only got a week before this comes out. So, who's planning on seeing it? Do you guys think this'll be the next Spider-Man, or that it'll make Daredevil look good in comparison?

----

Personally, I'll be waiting a week to see the reviews. Unfortunately, I don't count, since I've got finals that week anyway (and I'm probably going to end up seeing it regardless--my view is that, at the very least, it'll be decent camp).

I'm going to go see it with a friend or two. Even if it's terrible, we can still have a laugh

I haven't seen the actual trailer yet though, I'll have to go peek at that

Anyway, I think they had an excellent choice in casting for Iron Man.

This one actually looks good - I've never been a fan of Iron Man, but I must admit I'll be disappointed if it ends up being sub-par. Robert Downey Jr. is ideal as Tony Stark. I'll be seeing it sooner rather than later.

I went to see Ironman last night. Definitely feelin' the love on that movie, it was awesome! You could tell how many comic book nerds were in the audience by the number of giggles at the SHIELD agent's appearance. XD It had plenty of jokes for the non-fanboys, too. :D

I've just seen it a few hours ago and IT WAS AWESOME. That's it.

Not perfect of course. It had what I called 'first movie syndrome' like the first Fantastic Four Movie. IT NEED MORE SLUGFEST BETWEEN IRON MAN MARK II AND IRON MAN MARK I DAMMIT!

I'm just dissapointed at the last fight. Almost no fight at all. Why the director didn't just make them bash each other for 30 minutes is beyond me.

And yeah, the appearance of the SHIELD agent also make me giggles. Sigh, he's supposed to be nick fury. But that will distract us, I guess.

...and Nick Fury said "Samuel L. Jackson."

It was probably a joke, but character-wise, it works. Jackson is among the most purely distilled badasses to be found in modern cinema; Fury is among the most purely distilled (non-superpowered) badasses to be found in comic books.

Yeah, that was from one of the Ultimate-universe comics (in which case, Fury was designed specifically to look like Sam Jackson for that reason).

Hell yes it is! I just saw it 90 minutes age and I have to say it's quite possibly the best film based on a Marvel superhero to date. It's hugely entertaining, surprisingly funny and doesn't take itself too seriously, which is usually a big pitfall for superhero films. Robert Downy jr. is little short of brilliant.

Was that the "Ultimate Galactus" collection where he raves about going to Heaven just so he can tell God "Get out of my seat"? Pass. Cool that tries too hard is no longer cool. The "1602" Fury was way better.

As for the "Iron Man" movie, a lot of the British critics think it's a witty character piece ruined by a lazy last act ("...and here is our contractually obligated CG-heavy superhero geek-porn beatfest."). They're probably right. But hey, at least it's not "Daredevil", "Electra", "Catwoman", "Ghost Rider", etc... :smallamused:

For me, it was one of the top superhero movies of recent years. I mean, it wasn't better than Batman Begins, but I definitely preferred it to, say, Spiderman 3. I though Robert Downey Jr. did a great job, and Gwyneth Paltrow was the perfect hot babe-in-distress (though she was in considerably less peril than most).

My only complaints: the Carebear Stare that Iron Man did near the end of the last battle, the obviousness of who the BBEG was, and the pacing.

Overall, though, I liked it, and I'd love to see more if I knew they could do it well.

I saw this cartoon a month or two ago on Marvel's website... it promotes the Iron "Batman"... i.e. given 30 or so minutes he can outfit his armor with exactly the right weapons to defeat you.

Definitely going to see the movie, just need a car and a good theater to see it in...

Iron man was my childhood favourite superhero, I've been waiting for this movie to be done for a couple of years. I really liked the movie, like someone said before, the final battle was a little short, but it was no problem for me. Only thing i did'nt liked... that the "iron man" song was saved for the credits, i was wishing for a battle scene with that song in the background.

Just saw it today. It was AWESOME. I love it so very much. Iron Man was a very human character, and I enjoyed that his career as a weapons dealer (or builder, same thing) caught up with him, but when he stopped weapons dealing, there were BIG consequences.

Great stuff, Iron Man is. Even if the villain was obvious.

There was just one thing that bothered me at the end:

When the arc-reactor exploded, and Stark was lying at the edge with his "heart" failing, how did he survive? The way I see it, he was the only one who knew how to build one, and his current one was failing fast. The new one he had designed and constructed was destroyed alongside with the prototype ironman thingie, the nemesis. So how did he survive?

I saw it last night...I loved it. So good, even my daughter was fully awake at 1am when the movie let out.

If you told me a few years ago that Robert Downey Jr. would have been Iron man, I would have laughed at you...but he did an awesome job. A very well done movie.

Top it off with a decent trailer for a new Hulk Movie starring Edward Norton (looks more promising than the fiasco a few years ago), and the Thor movie in 2009 and it makes you wonder if they are going for a particular angle...

STAY TILL AFTER THE CREDITS!!!

No really, for those who want the real scoop...it is after the movie is up. Yes...that was an agent of S.H.I.E.L.D., but our favorite agent wears an eyepatch...

Samuel L Jackson as Fury rebukes Tony slightly, telling him he isn;t the only hero in the world...then he drops the 'A' bomb...If they are gonna tie in the movies, I do think that a cast of Robert Downey Jr., Edward Norton, Samuel L. Jackson, Gweneth Paltrow, Liv Tyler (ok, not her for acting so much :smalltongue:) is a great start...can't wait to see who becomes Captin A and the guy they get for Thor. Wonder if Giant and Wasp will be joining or others...if they do things well...it will rock...and by tying the movies together, they might eliminate the main problem such a movie would have...Explaining who everyone is and establishing their histories.

OOoooohhh...Marvel owns the rights, and Stan has been in them all...I can only pray that they tie in at least Spiderman...That might be very cool.

Ooh, our showing also had a great trailer of the Dark Knight. Ledger makes a great Joker from what I see...too bad he will never reprise his role.

Remember during the fight how his ARC Mk. I kept losing power? Well at the end Jarvis said the suit was in emergency power mode, meaning the ARC Mk. I itself was probably dormant. When the big Arc Reactor went all EMP and shorted everything out, stuff that wasn't turned or powered on wouldn't be affected, which included his mini-Arc Mk I in his chest. As such, when his suit died, his mini Arc rebooted, not having to try and keep the suit powered up and not being affected by the EMP, providing enough power for just his heart.

I liked the movie, and I thought the special effects were seamless.

Tony Stark putting on the Red Suit using the robots reminded me of Blizzard's Starcraft trailer from last year. I wonder if both CGI animators came up with the sequence independently, or if one influenced the other.

I wish I had stayed for the scene after the credits, from what people have been saying in the spoiler quotes.

surely he can just hook up a car battery? Or any other source of electricity. The arc reactor is just a particularly snazzy one.

Well, there's a youtube video (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5uUfKICNFx8) of it floating around. But, in short, Stark returns home, and Nick Fury(played by Samuel L. Jackson) is there waiting for him. Fury tells him there are more superheroes around, and then mentions the Avengers Initiative.

Keep in mind there is already a Thor movie, a Nick Fury movie, and a Captain America movie in the works, and that sets up the Avengers movie...also in the works.

Yes, definite foreshadowing. Rhodes staring at the prototype and saying "Next time, baby." Of course, there's also this (http://www.filmschoolrejects.com/news/iron-man-is-this-war-machine.php), where the toy isn't directly called War Machine(instead, it's Iron Man: Stealth Operations), but it looks a lot like WM, and the back of the package mentions that Rhodes wears the suit, so while we haven't seen WM in action yet, it's a good bet we will at least by the Avengers movie.

I thought it was very good for a superhero movie.

I would have prefered if they'd focused more on the terrorists and less on the "OMG! Let's make the suits fight!" It got too cliche towards the end, I thought.

And why does the Stark company need to make weapons anymore? They could make multi-millions just with that AI technology Tony has in his house and the uber translation software Obadiah has on his computer.

So wait a minute, was the terrorist leader Mandarin. I thought the names were different.

Maybe. He spoke about the glory of empire and how his time had come. He had a very prominent ring on his hand. His group was known as the ten rings. We know his men were killed, but we don't know for certain that he was (though it stands to reason he would be). He may simply have been one of the Mandarin's lackies. He was known to give some of his goons a ring now and then. If they go with the Mandarin (and I hope they do) I hope he is more like his ocmic book self than the cartoon version in the recent Marvel animated movie.

Did anyone else think that pre paint armor Iron Man could have passed for Ultron with a few very minor changes? Side antennas for instance. If they go ahead with the Avengers movie, Ultron would be a good villain to use and based on this movie they can make him look very good.

Also Iron Man really needs to have that ultrasonic thing built into his armor in a future movie

This was my one problem with the bad guy's evil plan. Why kill Stark at all, since locking him in a lab and letting him make toys produces insane profits already? And I don't mean later on, I mean at the beginning where the baddie hires the terrorists for no apparent reason.

Later on, maybe there's more money to be made from the absurdly powerful arc reactors that are apparently simple enough that you can put them together in a cave.

But really, I'm just nit picking. Great movie, loved it.

Yeah, generally it was a great movie. It was good as a movie that establishes the future Iron Man franchise as well as the character of Tony Stark and the Iron Man suit. From what I can tell the suit will show much more impressive abilities in the later movies, not that the suit is weaksauce or anything.

This was my one problem with the bad guy's evil plan. Why kill Stark at all, since locking him in a lab and letting him make toys produces insane profits already?

And that worked so well for the terrorists.

But truly, I agree that it would have made more sense for Stane to have not hired the terrorists to kill Stark, but rather for the kidnap to be a random/planned occurrence and for Stane to have simply ignored their demands in favour of seizing control of Stark Industries.

So, future plotlines?

Ten Rings: Iron Man continues his campaign against the Ten Rings organization, eventually coming up against its leader, the enigmatic and genius Mandarin.

Ultron: At Pepper Potts insistence that he at least try to stop himself from getting killed, Stark modifies a version of the Jarvis AI to pilot the armour. Inevitably (meddling by Mandarin?) it goes rogue, appropriating and upgrading the MkII Armour and calling itself Ultron.

Escalation: Iron Man Prototype plans are leaked/stolen, and several governments begin building their own. Russia has the Crimson Dynamo, Japan the Silver Samurai/Sunfire, China has Doctor Sun/Ultimo, India has Indra/Karima and the EU has... a European tech hero/villain. Whatever, go crazy. Emphasis is put on how much more dangerous war might be with the power to conquer countries in the hands of just a few pilots.
America ends up building/appropriating Warmachine (piloted by Tony Rhodes), who battles Tony Stark over his intention to somehow destroy the designs for the armours, along with the armours themselves.

Stane's motivation was never explicitly stated, but it seemed like he was fed up with Tony Stark's behavior. The last straw was Tony playing craps rather than accepting that award from the military.

So wait a minute, was the terrorist leader Mandarin. I thought the names were different.

It was just foreshadowing, which I enjoyed the tidbits they dropped (ring, shield agent constantly wanting meeting). All in all I really liked it, and only hope other directors take note of how it turned out.

That, and I figure the guy just wanted to be the top man in charge. He helps Tony's father build the company, is IN control of it after the man's death until Tony takes control when he comes of age, and then finds himself playing second banana again. Sure, he could continue to be quite wealthy and powerful, but his ego couldn't abide being second anymore.

At least that's my take on it. My only familiarity with the Iron Man universe is through the movie, so perhaps the character from the comic is different.

Whats wrong with the comic? Iron Manv4 is actually one of Marvels strongest comics at the moment in my opinion.

For the last few years Iron Man has been such a tool. Civil War, Registration Act, throwing heroes in prison, 42, the illuminati, exiling the hulk into space. A large part of all the bad stuff thats been happening can be linked to Tony Stark. I really hope it turns out hes been a skrull.....

Nice summary of the Armor Wars... since it's a fairly major arc in the comic series, I think that the chances that it'll be a plot for one of the movies will be high.

Actually, the Crimson Dynamo could fit with China, and Russia also has Titanium Man...

Justin Hammer should be introduced somewhere in the movie series...

Iron Man
War Machine
Crimson Dynamo
Titanium Man

forshadowing through the toy companies?

i duno about anyone else, but seeing those makes me want to see all four of them in action.

Stane's motivation was never explicitly stated, but it seemed like he was fed up with Tony Stark's behavior.

All I needed to know about Stone's motivation was in those two magazine covers, the first with Stone as the head of Stark Enterprises, the second with him stepping out of the way when Tony — a young guy at the time —*takes charge of the company. For an egomaniac like Stone, that would eat away at him. And worse, Tony is kind of a ****; he doesn't truly care about running Stark Enterprises, he just likes designing weapons and chasing girls. That's just salt in the wound.

But you know, he can't act because, well, that damn kid is just too smart. He's the one inventing all these neat doodads that are making Stark Enterprises the largest weapons manufacturer in the world. So he swallows his pride and sits by as Tony acts like a petulant man-child and a huge ****, until he finally can't take it anymore. But he can't just kill Tony; he's got to make it look like an accident. So when Tony conveniently ends up in a war zone ...

Honestly that urked me slightly, maybe the one that Stane had was still usable, and he was able to switch them out in time to buy him enough time for a replica. Maybe he had one in his office as a spare or something and didn't have time to get it before going after Stane. Honestly, its a lot of that theater logic that kinda makes you walk out of the movie theater and go, "Wait a minute!".

But all in all it was a great movie. Awesome soundtrack too. I hope they sale a soundtrack CD, that was awesome.

It was awesome. Obidia, however, was obviously the villian from the second he was introduced. (Has there been anyone in that role who wasn't?)

Since comic fans would recognise his name as having been a villain in the comics they couldn't really hide it.

It was good but only works if you use comic book logic, otherwise it falls apart.

Once it was no longer supplying power to all of the energy intensive systems required by suit Mk.II, even the leftover dregs should be enough to match the output of a car battery. At least long enough for Tony to create an improved mini-arc again.
Or maybe I just have a greater level of suspension of disbelief. *shrug*

After taking a grueling 4.5 hour property final yesterday, I decided to reward myself by seeing Iron Ma.

My response to the movie can be summarized with the following except from an AIM conversation that occurred after the movie:

crow529: I thought he'd be a great Tony Stark
BlackStaticWolf: He was.
BlackStaticWolf: It makes me want an iron man suit
BlackStaticWolf: I mean... how awesome would that be?
BlackStaticWolf: I'd wear it to court.
BlackStaticWolf: With a tie, of course.
BlackStaticWolf: I'd be the best lawyer ever.
BlackStaticWolf: I'd be all like...
BlackStaticWolf: "OBJECTION!"
BlackStaticWolf: And then blast the other attorney with my repulsor beam.
BlackStaticWolf: And then I'd say something witty like...
BlackStaticWolf: Well... I can't think of anything.
BlackStaticWolf: But I'd be in an Iron Man suit, so people would laugh no matter what I said. Or else.

Here's the thing. The movie appealed to both comic book fans like myself, and people who have enver even heard of Iron man before (Both the wife and 6 eyar old daughter thought ti was wicked cool). Top notch acting, fast pacing, no wasted scenes, and...

IT STAYED AS TRUE TO THE SOURCE MATERIAL AS POSSIBLE.

X 3, SPider Man 3 and FANTASTIC FOUR, I'm looking right at you.

Awesome movie.

I'd just like to say, Robert Downey Jr. was absolutely perfect for the part of Tony Stark. It's like the great prophet Stan Lee wrote it for him 45 years ago, to await his birth and eventual release from prison on cocaine charges.

Downey was more Tony Stark then the actual character was. I cant think of any other actor who has done as good a job as RDjr.

So I just got back from seeing Iron Man, effing awesome is all I have to say. It was utterly fantastic. Especially since I'm an engineer!

One of the best parts I thought, was when he was captured and was told to build the Jericho rocket, and the terrorist guys were watching him. They had a picture of the rocket and one guy goes "Thats not what it looks like in the picture". Which is great for anyone who builds stuff by "does this look right" compared to directions or anything else.

Amen. I thought it was a great movie, and although I wondered how he survived that last EMP, I don't really demand much in the way of logic from entertainment.
