What are your favourite fantasy songs? Songs that you like to play while you play D&D, or just make you think about all that. Many of the LotR songs are what I like.

There are lots of songs which make me imagaine fantasy-ish things when I listen to them. To name but a few... Here Comes the King (http://youtube.com/watch?v=Jal0A_QddaU)by X Ray Dog, Pompeii (http://youtube.com/watch?v=GusLypfx7OQ) by E.S. Posthumus, and Clubbed to Death (http://youtube.com/watch?v=PMq4akUZr8c)by Rob Dougan. All three are freakin' brilliant songs, by the way.

Pretty much the entire Queen II album, I think Father to Son and Loser in the End are the only ones that aren't fantasy songs.

You'd be surprised how much the word sword comes up in a manowar song, sure, I can name other bands who talk about pillaging and swordfights and such but they do it often enough and obviously enough to be of note.

The majority of Manowar, DragonForce and Blind Guardian would seem to qualify. Blue Oyster Cult's Black Blade is about Elric/Stormbringer. Rush's The Necromancer and Black Sabbath's The Wizard are both about exactly what their titles suggest.

Here's my playlist for campaigns:

Blind Guardian (Follow the Blind, Tales From the Twilight World, Somewhere Far Beyond, Nightfall in Middleearth - interludes, Twist in the Myth)
Hammerfall (Glory to the Brave, Renegade, Legacy of Kings, Crimson Thunder)
Elvenking (3 first albums)
Rhapsody (Legendary Tales, Dawn of Victory, Rain Of A Thousand Flames)
Galloglass (Legends From Now And Nevermore)
Blackmore's Night (Ghost of A Rose, Village Lantern)
Grave Digger (Excalibur)

I don't play these when I play, but listening to these usually takes my thought to the same direction reading a good book does.

If you've read Lovecraft, you'll love this. Carols aren't supposed to chill you like this. :)

Within Temptation has done few songs I really like, and many I don't feel anything about. I like In Perfect Harmony and Neverending Story, and there might be few more similar songs. Nightwish has also done fantasy songs, but I know little else about that.

EDIT: Oh, and Blackmore's Night. Thanks, Narmoth.

Heather Alexander has made songs to Mercedes-Lackeys books (which I haven't read) and others songs with fantasy themes. Lord Faral's Race and Storyteller are nice. Mercedes-Lackey has also written lyrics to some songs, but I only know of the Elven Harper. I really like that one.

I suggest also checking out Lisa Theriot. I have only had Lady Isabel and the Elf Knight, but now that you've reminded me I'm trying to find more about her. Some of the clips in her site are great, and the lyrics I've found for the songs are beautiful.

To add to the list of fantasy metal groups: Rhapsody of Fire's another good example.

Pretty much anything by Rhapsody (of Fire), Demons & Wizards or Battelore, as well as a few things by Blind Guardian (The Bard's Song, Mordred's Song, Lord of the Rings), Nightwish (Over the Hills and Far Away, A Return to the Sea, Elvenpath) and Sonata Arctica (Fullmoon, hell, pretty much all of Ecliptica).

Ah, power metal...

Also, for lower magic fantasy Amon Amarth kinda fits, though it's really more historical. I love Pursuit of Vikings and The Beheading of a King

Nightwish (Over the Hills and Far Away, A Return to the Sea, Elvenpath)

Don't forget Wishmaster and Wanderlust, both written about Dragonlance so pretty appropriate.

Enya is often quite good for some types of adventure.

Good point. I seem to remember there being a fantasyish song on Dark Passion Play, but I can't bring it to mind now.

Amaranth? The Poet and the Pendulum? The Islander? Last of the Wilds? 7 Days to the Wolves? Any of these ring any bells?

Also, I have to agree about Blind Guardian. Seeing as how Nightfall in Middle-Earth is based entirely on Tolkien's Silmarillion, and other songs are based on other fantasy things (The Soulforged is based on Dragonlance, specifically on the character of Raistlin, and And Then There Was Silence on the Trojan War). There are also some interesting songs that just get the blood pumping, Battlefield being the first that comes to mind.

The soundtrack to the movie Legend. The Battle of Evermore by Led Zeppelin. Most of the Yes albums, for that matter. In The Court of the Crimson King, by King Crimson (the whole album, not just the song. 21st Century Schizoid Man is awesome for battles).

Zousha jogged my memory - 7 Days to the Wolves is related to Stephen King's Dark Tower series.

Ah, power metal...

Power metal is AWESOME.

Much like Nightwish. I really do love Nightwish . . . but Wishmaster is my all-time favorite song purely because it is about Raistlin and Dragonlance. I also hold that Amaranth is about a vampire, and I do so like vampires . . .

Dragonforce is really good too. I like Valley of the Damned and Through the Fire and Flames.

This is a cool thread . . . I have so many new bands to check out now.

Nightwish (Over the Hills and Far Away, )

That song is so terrible, that when Gary Moore heard it, he thought it was a karaoke-version.
This (http://youtube.com/watch?v=iyJEytBlp1I) is how it really sounds
(the Nightwish guitarist even copied Gary Moores solo)

I dunno . . . I like Nightwish's version better, actually.

Celesty should defiantly go here, and týr should too, and Axenstar, Beholder too, being named after a DnD monster and all.
