The story revolves around this guy:

Deiji Darkhallow
http://i23.tinypic.com/zmmxjp.jpg

And his students. As you can probably tell he's a mage, well fighter/mage... fighter/mage/fire sorcerer... His history will explain it better, but that's part of the story. The setting is entirely outside of D&D though it is a fantasy comic (I don't have enough knowledge of the rules to try and make it work with D&D).

Looks interesting, I like the art style.
I shall be reading this.

Personally, I think you should use colour like you did here, it looks pretty good.

BooTheHamster
2008-05-18, 02:10 AM
Thank you. My only issue there is that I'm still learning to use my drawing tablet in conjunction with Photoshop, so it would be roughly 1 update a week as opposed to possibly 3. That picture up there took me about 3 hours, give or take, although most of that was deciding on colors and trying to get all the details ironed out.

I do agree that it looks better that way though.

Also, this is the world of Valoran, where all of this story takes place. The resolution is kind of bad because it's a picture rather than a scan but anyways...

Either way, I think it's a good picture for an early try.
Also, the map is great.

When I draw, I tend to use the mouse as I don't have a tablet, once you get the hang of it though, it gets pretty easy to use the mouse, just takes a while to the hang of it.

But keep on drawing, you get better and better.

BooTheHamster
2008-05-18, 05:47 PM
Yeah. Hopefully I'll get better with more practice. I've only used the tablet a few times so far but I'm getting the hang of it. It's getting easier to use, but photoshop is annoying me. The bucket fill tool just has no respect.

Anyways, first update is up. Since it's just the title page I'll likely be adding another one later on tonight.

Jack up the tolerance for the bucket tool. Set it up to about 70. Use different layers so you don't screw up, and turn on "All Layers" so you can actually effect the layer with the lines on them.

2 updates in one day! Sweet... Anyways, yeah, second comic is up.

I had a bit of trouble with the layout, but it came out ok. I had hoped for a sort of overlapping style but merging the panels was confusing.

Echowinds: Thanks that was very helpful. Sadly I finished most this comic before I read that... :smallfrown:

Anywho, since I'm on a roll, I think I'll get to work on the next one. There may even be dialogue!

Ok, now we're rolling. Sorry for the double post, but we have an update!

I seem to be able to churn these out fairly often so I'll see what I can do about getting another one up in the next few days.

A 17-yr old Elf? By Vaarsuvius' admission that means she's probably still in diapers :smalleek:

BooTheHamster
2008-05-28, 01:20 PM
She wished to be big at a magic wish machine... oh wait, that was Tom Hanks.

I actually thought about the ages and such but, chronologically speaking, it's much easier to change the way elves age than it is to change everybody's ages... I simply go by the assumption that they age just as humans would up to a point in the mid-twenties to early thirties and then stop.

Update!!!

That's two this week. I'm thinking of making that a regular thing, but with summer school, I'm not sure if 2+ updates a week is feasible considering the amount of work it takes per page. Anyhow, you guys may have to be happy with once a week. That said, I have no homework this weekend, so I'll probably have another update later on.

Must agree with everyone else, comparing your first to this latest, there is obvious improvement in drawing, well done.

A non-Oots style comic is a good change.

Will be marking this to read regularly.

Thanks.

I'm thinking of redoing that first comic, actually, so that it'll match the rest of them. I still didn't have the layout of the comic very well planned at the time, so it came out looking...like that.

So, I thought I'd share a digitally remastered version of the map of Valora. This way you guys will know what the places in the comic and character descriptions are. If you're wondering where our characters are, they're in the forest to the west of Naviali, way down South, investigating reports from the villagers in the Western Plains. Anyways, just click on the map to see a larger(much larger) version.

I see that you put a lot of work in the comic. How long does it take for you to do one anyway?

BooTheHamster
2008-06-25, 03:05 AM
@Guyinthestreet: On average between 3-5 hours per page on the art, though if I have to draw new settings, characters, or effects, like in #11-13, it can take up to 8 hours while I try to choose things like color scheme and light sources, and figure out how to make photoshop do what I want. As for dialogue and storyboarding, I usually spend about an hour or two for a batch of around 6 pages.

So about 5-10 hours, on average, per update. Obviusly some, such as #13 can take longer due to details and the like.

Hey, this is pretty cool stuff. I rather like the art style, it is simple but effective (Albeit perhaps not very emotive). The characters and story show good potential to get pretty interesting, plus there is a little funny thrown in on the side. I will try and remember to check up on this, see how it develops. :smallcool:

Though, I would say the style of this does not mesh well with the webcomic medium. I mean like, in a graphic novel or something, it is fine if you have a page or two of someone flipping or expressions or what have you, but in a webcomic updating a page at a time, I could see that getting potentially frustrating (The same thing that Erfworld suffers a bit from). Obviously you can do what you want, but it might just be something to keep in mind.

I agree. I've been trying to counteract this by updating multiple pages at once if there's not going to be much dialogue or something. Sometimes it's not possible, certainly, but whenever I can, I'll do action sequences and whatnot in one big update chunk. Hopefully that'll minimize the frustration with those types of pages.

The flipping one was done just for the sake of it being cool...

Two things:

First thing-
Chapter 2
#21: Prisoner's Dilemma

http://i33.tinypic.com/2uqoccx.jpg

Second Thing:
Claire 2.0
http://i35.tinypic.com/286waa9.jpg

Explanations:
1) I wanted to wait until I had a title page to start Chapter 2, and I was going to do an intermission between chapters, but since the forums were down that wasn't possible, so we're starting with this little scene in the baddy's dungeon.

2) This is a little something that some call an art upgrade. I decided to go ahead and do it because of the comments about the lack of emotionality, so I modified the style so to make it a bit more detailed. The reason I'm showing this to you now, rather than just doing it in-comic as a surprise is because I wanted to get people's opinions on the change, especially on the colors. If you'll notice, the colors on Claire 2.0 are different from the original, by a bit, and I was wondering if it improved the art or not. Anyways, thoughts on this?

Yay...

Ok, so no comments on the upcoming art change... can I assume everybody liked it?

Nobody dislikes better art. I certainly like the improvement.

However, the trick is to find a happy medium between time used and quality, so as long as an art update doesn't hurt a regular schedule, it is definitely a good thing.

I'm still reading and I think the Master is great, along with that art change for the girl, Claire I think...

The update shouldn't change the update schedule any since it's just a few minor differences. At most, it'll force me to stick to my schedule of once a week instead of 'more when possible'...

Anyways, I just thought I'm mention the Chapter 2 title page. I put it up a few days ago and didn't mention it, but since it's also a way to show off Izzy 2.0, I figure I'll do so now.

Anyways, new update by this weekend. I have family over which is why it's not up today...

Love the new art, eagerly awaiting the next update. How did this get onto the second page, behind comics that have been dead for months? Back you go!

Probably because he said "new update by this weekend" on July 25th, over a week ago.

Damn, caught in a lie...:smallannoyed:

Sorry I haven't been updating. Kinda took a vacation from drawing because I've been busy with some personal issues, mostly money and family. Those two things never mix well. My computer crashed too. I had back-ups, but it still set me back a few days. I got about 85% complete with the next update when all this crap hit. I had to reinstall Photoshop and my tablet and... etc. Anyways, I just need to get 2 more panels and the text done, and we'll be rolling again, hopefully.

I also got Halo for my PC and discovered Dr. Horrible's Sing Along Blog this past weekend, so... yeah... that took up a bit of my time... about 80 hours...

The Master? It's a cool name and all, but either ripped off or cliche by now.

Well, technically it's The the master, but whatever. :smalltongue:

Very nice. I especially liked #13 and #16, respectively for the drawing of the soldiers and that of the tower. Somehow the images set a pretty good mood.

Anyways, the storyline so far isn't too compelling yet, but you've only had about 20 pages to weave it so that's pretty normal at this stage. I'm looking forward to more of this.

Okay, my unofficial hiatus is over. Regular updates should resume. I'll try to get another one up this week to make up for lost time.

Enjoy.

This isn't an "official" update per se and there's no new comic, but I did want to mention that the first 4 comics have been "digitally remastered"!!! Sort of. I was really unhappy with the first one so I've gone back and changed it to match the art it Chapter 1 a bit better. Comic 4 has also been changed so that the speech balloons are the same as in subsequent comics. Comic 3 also had a big black dot in there from a brush mishap, so that has been cleared up. Anyways, that's it... You can see the new versions on the first page of this thread.

New update by this weekend. I just started school again, so I'm doing my best to get it up ASAP. I'm still updating once a week, though, so nobody start rioting. Well, maybe a little...

#24: Storytime...

Update.

Unlike George Washington, I can tell a lie... BUT, I have good reason. I have 2 jobs now, along with school crap. Now, that SHOULD be what's keeping me too busy to update, but in reality, I've been on Xbox Live day and night for about a week now. Halo 3 is addictive. Anyways, I'm working on returning to my regular updates by next week, and may even have one for tomorrow. I just need to get myself sorted out a bit first.

Oh, and I'm on the second page? Really guys? :smallfrown:

Have a good one.

For those who may have thought this comic was dead, I have only one thing to say: you wish. Seriously, though, I've just been really busy with school and work. Luckily(?), I got fired this past week, so I have plenty of time to get back to making the comic.

Anyhow, enjoy. :smalltongue:

Comments encouraged. I went to page 3 on here...

#27: Coaching for the Stage

New comic is now up. I apologize for the title, it is the best pun I could come up with for stagecoach. It's sad, I know. :smallannoyed:

Anyway, I certainly hope you'll read the comic in spite of that.

Enjoy.

Good to see it back, I was on the way of thinking it sunk to the languishing depths of the latter forum pages.

It's a little late, but at least I finished it. This technically counts as Sunday night. :smallcool:

I don't want to set a regular schedule, since my own schedule is really hectic, but expect one or two comics a week. Hopefully I can stick to it this time.

Anyhow, enjoy.

#29: There Will Be Blood

Hooray for once a week. What's going to happen, I wonder...

So, I was considering taking this comic to its own site, and working on it more seriously by actually sticking to a schedule of 2-3 a week, since I'm down to 3 hours per page. I'd have to figure out all the logistics first. Thoughts?

You've got a heck of a lot of work to do with a website.

You can trust me on that

Yeah, which is why I'm still considering. I'd have to figure out a lot of stuff, first of which is getting a server, and coding the website. But, I would like the comic to start taking off a bit more than it currently is, since I'm seriously slacking. Plus, I have a couple of other projects I want to work on.
