Hey Playgrounder's,

Got a basic question,
Has any one played a druid at 1st level as group healer? or as the only person with healing? How well does it stand up to say a cleric healing?

Right now we are playing core only.

Thanks guys!

You can't healdump like Clerics, but you'll still be ok. Generally it helps to just solve encounters fast; Entangle is a fine spell for this job, for example. Anyways, yes, you should be quite ok although first level is always a Russian Roulette with 5 bullets, unless specifically optimizing for it.

If you feel the need to be a healbot, just make sure your animal companion is combat capable and that you can contribute with other things than just Cures too. If you got access to Spell Compendium, Lesser Vigor would work out much better than Cure Light Wounds as it's basically guaranteed full HP on first level, making for better spell economy.

First two levels will be tough (as you'll have so few spell slots that getting the healing done will be tough - same applies to Cleric too though), but by the time you can afford Wands of Cure Light Wounds (level 2-3), you'll be fine and you don't need to prepare that many Cures anymore.

PHB II. Pick the Spontaneous Healing Druid variant, giving up spontaneous SNA spells. Use the Vigor line from Spell Compendium for out of combat healing, and you'll be fine. After level 3 or 4, have the party buy a wand of Lesser Vigor with "Group Funds" and give it to the UMDer. He is now in charge of healing. If you have slots at the end of the day or it's an emergency, you'll help. The wand gets replaced as needed, still with party funds.

As a druid, you can afford to spend most of your slots on cure spells at lower levels, and rely on your animal companion to contribute for you in combat. This is probably not optimal, but the scary thing is that you're still doing nearly as much as the fighter, in addition to your healing role out of combat (always remember that healing is a task for after the fight, not during it). And even if you prepare Cure Light Wounds in all of your spell slots, you can still convert those to summons, and contribute that way, too.

After level 3 or 4, have the party buy a wand of Lesser Vigor with "Group Funds" and give it to the UMDer.Since you should be doing this out of combat, you might as well use the wand yourself, too. It'll work just as well for you as for the rogue, and you don't have to make any pesky rolls.

If you don't have the SC (I'm assuming you don't due to mentioning that you only want Core material, http://www.imarvintpa.com/dndlive/spells.php?ID=4794 explains what Lesser Vigour does.

Sstoopidtallkid: Doesn't spontaneous rejuvenation suck? Fast healing (spell level) for three rounds at first lvl is like 3 hp.

as far as my animal companion is going I'm choosing a badger so should still be able to contribute.... any feat suggestions?

Chronicled said in another Druid thread that he makes all of his players use the Shapeshifter and Spontaneous Rejuvanation variants due to how horrible SJ is (it apparently balances the class well).

EDIT: You could ask the DM if you could spontaneously cast Cure spells rather then SNA spells (I doubt that it would be that unbalancing: you'd still be worse at healing then a Cleric due to Druids getting some healing spells later then Clerics).
