sterility doesn't mean insensibility. Or frigidity.

On the other hand, if they WERE frigide, it would make them less vulnerable to slaneesh.. at least, if you keep yourself to a "regular" manly pleasure..

Ok.. I have to wash my brain with acid to take out those mental image...

Depends on the type of sterility.
If it is a engineered genetic defect genitalia may still be present, just certain "components" might not function, same with chemical.

If it is physical, like a neutering, then parts may still exist, but not work. Or it can be a clean removal of everything so nothing exists.

If I had to argue for one or the other, given their tech level, it is probably a genetic or chemical process fast effective and not much of a mess.

I don't remember them actually saying SM are sterile, but I could be wrong. (its probably a by-product of something else that they do to them) I don't see how it would be necessary, as the fact that such things as lust are probably psycho-indoctrinated out of them anyway.

It's called peeing. That is all.

i think the question was more on the prescence of testicle, not the penis. A penis is necesary for peeing, testicles are not. but testicles are necesary for the production of certain hormones like testosterone, so if you cut them off you have a bunch of non aggresive puppies. Then again they can probably inject the hormones or something like that.

That being said, I'd say yes, simply because the aspirants don't have their private parts cut off during the process, as far as I can tell.

Eldar I can understand, but.. Tau? That hurts, man. That hurts deep.

I figure they won't say it even if it is for fear of commercial decency and losing sales. I figure that it is yes, too, because it probably just be easier to do it chemically.

On the other hand... I think humanity is doomed (aside from those chillin' with the Tau) if they take their best and toughest soldiers at young ages and remove them from the genepool.

Big guns make things dead faster. Your attempt to emasculate the Emperor's Finest fails.

And why do people think of Slaaneshi pleasures as sex related? Seriously, if sex was this thing's calling card, it wouldn't be anywhere close to being a major daemon, let alone a god of the warp.

SolkaTruesilver
2008-06-02, 12:32 AM
On the other hand, the Adepte Custodus needs genitals, since they reproduce to keep the Empire's finest well furnished.

Since the Adepte Custodus (whatever) are something of uber-space marines, I think we can safely say the Space Marines don't need to have their reproductive capacities 100% removed physically.

My impression has been that it IS Slanaash's calling card. It's more than a god of sex, but it is a god of sex.

According to the Horus Heresy series...

In Fulgrim, specifically the Dropsite Massacre, there's an account of someone "screaming in orgasmic pleasure" at one point for reasons I'm not specifying here. This implies they are in fact capable of orgasm - though whether they're capable of having kids is another matter (come on, there's big then there's TOO big...), and there's a good chance that if they DO have them testicles are retracted into the body, meaning a kick there isn't a win.

Zenos
2008-06-02, 01:38 AM
Ass far as I remember they are capable of having sex, and possibly having children, though these children are normal humans. Well, that's what I've come to understand anyways. *skulks away*

I think we can all agree that space marines have plenty of testosterone (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Testosterone). It's what make male muscles inherently more powerful than female ditto. No nuts, no testosterone. So yes, of course they do.

The calling card of Slaanesh is enjoying existence in every shape, way, and form.

http://wh40k.lexicanum.com/wiki/Slaanesh

To submit to his will is to submit to life of excess, decadence, and taking pleasure in anything you do. To reduce him to a mere god of sex is to insult every fiber of his being.

Think about the Noise Marines, for example - their enjoyment of combat grows the louder, flashier, noise, and more chaotic it is.

Unless castration is a part of the Chapter's doctrine (a custom chapter, since we know of no such chapter)? Certainly they will have them. Most, however, will be sterile.

Some will be fertile (i.e. Space Wolves)
Others will be sterile (i.e. most other chapters)
Others will be too psychotic to care (i.e. the rest)

Really, this is only an issue in the less devout Chapters, as the more devout ones would probably take vows of (perhaps redundant) chastity alongside their more prominent vows of loyalty, piety and killing stuff.

The less devout ones, however, would perhaps have this as a recreational activity on their homeworld, or (if they're particularly barbaric-culture based) after a victory on a world. We know that this happened quite a bit in the Horus Heresy, when Marines were less separate from the general military/population, and were better made.

EDIT:
Oh, and Slaaneshi Marines probably have like eight sets.
Instead of fingers.

TIME FOR COPYPASTA!

An hour after the battle ended, the river was still dammed with their bodies. The battle had raged, the glut of orks striking upon the lines of the Raven Guard, forced to fall back again and again and again, for a good five miles, winnowing away the horde.

Now, the corpses clogged the river, black and green melting over one another under the hot noon day sun. A great deal of them were perforated, ruined, torn to shreds, slipping and tearing apart in the fingers of the Astartes as they cleaned the river out, tossing them onto great piles, where the licking tongues of promethium did their work. It was long, tedious, work. But let it not be said that Astartes leave a job undone.

Crossing through the long, yellow stalks came a caravan of gawkers, from the hive, come to the calm after the storm. Some, carefully sifting through the dirt to seek shells left unfound by the techmarines. Others, to simply gaze upon the Astartes, children of the Holy Emperor, all.

One woman however, looked carefully at the pack of marines, with a more careful eye. Her eyes, behind elaborate crystal lenses that beggared her house for a month, settled upon one of the helmetless marines, rising from the muck, gauntlets dripping with blood.

The woman, and her servants holding her coat tails, approached.

"Brother Marine? I say, Brother Marine?"

The armor clad figure turns, halfway reaching for his helmet. Amicable curiosity set upon his heavy features.

"Noble madam," he says, before hesitating a moment, "Memnon?" At her look of astonishment with a hint of fear, he grinned, "I was briefed ma'am. Same as the rest. Do you carry questions from your lord? Assure him, the day has been won. Clean up operations shou-"
"That's not what I'm here for," She interrupted, perhaps, she thinks to herself with a bit of apprehension, a bit too boldly, as the marine's brothers look over at the scene. The marine, furrowing his brow, looked at Memnon, before gazing and nodding back to his cohort.
"Of course madam. I suppose I can spare a few moments for a loyal servant of the Emperor. What is it then?" He reaches down, scraping off orken flesh from his hands, all the while mumbling the Rites of Maintenance.
"What is your name?"
"-nissiah look favorabl- Brother Adept Tullus, milady, -upon my ministrations, take no offence-"
"Indeed, well, Brother Tullus, I was...In admiration of your efforts and was wondering if you might accept a reward."
"ministrations- The Captain will accept all material goods at his judgement, we are not a mercenary band-bugger I always forget this bit-"
"You misunderstand," The Lady stepped forward, looking up at the marine, "This is a gift for YOU."
The marine paused, frowned, looked down. She batted her inch long eyelashes at him. He sighed.
"No."

The servants, as one, stepped back, in involuntary fear.
"N-N-No?" She stepped forward, driving one heel deep in the mud, holding her skirt up with some violence, "Hah, hah, I-I-I do NOT believe you understand QUITE what I am offering here-"
Brother Tullus shook his head, running a gauntlet over his short cropped hair, then frowning as he gazed on it, "Oh but I do. It's not been the first time some dynasty has gotten the idea to augment its gene pool, and believe you me I am ENTIRELY flattered, but it just won't work."
Lady Memnon flustered, stuttered then shouted, "WHY not?"

Brother Tullus, unable to help him self, set his eyes at a crawl to the heavens as he spread his arms, despairing of what passed for nobility these past centuries, "Are you honestly asking this?"

Lady Memnon glanced down, before petulantly muttering something about armor and really how he could let her do the work.
"Do you really want to tackle the physics of this? Sure, in theory, I can take off my tonnes of armor, ignoring the many bionics and enhancements throughout my person and the fact I'm unsure the equipment even works anymore, lay myself down on the ground, and you could hop up and down on me, and it would have all the erotic appeal of a woman humping a pipe set in a ground."

Some titters and giggles erupted from the crowd as she turned crimson, as he continued, "This of course precludes the actually possibility of birthing a child with my modified genes," he waved his hand at her dainty form, "Something I wouldn't wish upon you. Finally, I'm a servant of the Emperor, not some Johnny call boy, and I have REAL work to do," He let his arm drop, as he shook his head, and redonned his helmet, "Call up some hiver, I'm sure he'd be only too glad."

The space marine returned to his comrades, who silently stared back at him, and the unmoving Lady Memnon, frozen with fury and embarrassment.

"Another one?" Intoned Brother Augustine.
"Indeed, Brother. I had to give an impromptu lesson in anatomy," the vox crackled back and forth, to the onlookers it appeared the marines returned to scooping the foul xenos from their river in silence.
"Did you explain the, 'split you like an axe splits a lo-'"
"No, Brother Augustine, I felt I had to be respectful, besides," With a grunt, Tullus heaved a wedged in power klaw out of the mire of bodies, "I didn't have the heart to tell her about me and Francis."

He turned, and saw Brother Francis across the bank, heaving two corpses over his shoulders. They waved to one another happily.

"Emperor's breath," murmured Augustine as he shook his head, "You better not wake us all up again with your caterwauling tonight."
"Maybe you'd like to grab her before she leaves?"
"Nah. Not enough muscle."

Lady Memnon stalked off, her dress trailing mud and ork's blood, leaving the Raven Guard to their dirty work.

LBO, I'm,

wow...

just, I don't even...

Calm down, it's not the Pedos Sororitas, remember that there is far far worse.

As to the question at hand, I'm not seeing anything in the Lexicanum addressing this specifically (perhaps I should be thankful), although I think it is a safe bet that with the amount of chemical finagling that the are put through daily, well, it might be spotted and purple for all I know. On the same token however, a mutation in the seed, i.e. the Space Vikings Wolves, could have the effect of, er, revitalizing said appetites.

As for whether or not the equipment remains, the only chapter I know of that practices wholesale physical castration are the Pretty Marines (necessary to fit into their power armor). Which may go a good way towards explaining their rivalry with the Angry Marines, as a lack of male genitalia makes it impossible to equip a Deuterium-plated Power Codpiece.

Besides, big guns don't make things dead faster...it's very possible to kill something faster with a .22 than a 12 gauge slug. The larger gun just leaves a bigger hole.

not really...I mean if you hit someone COM with a 12 ga, yes, it will more than likely kill them faster than with a .22lr round, but there was a cop around here hit with a .22 in the arm and it bounced off of the bone into his heart, killing him faster than if a shotgun had shredded his arm.

shot placement is always more important than what size gun you have.

Yeah, but if you put a bullet in his chest and it bounced off the bone and didn't hit anything vital, it wouldn't kill him as fast as massive trauma from a shotgun blast.

here, I'll counter it with good sense. It doesn't matter where a bolter hits you, if you idea of armor is a t-shirt and slacks, or Kevlar for that matter.

Bolter round to the arm, no arm, bolter round to the shoulder, basketball sized hole in your torso, bolter round to your pinky toe, and your leg stops at the knee.

Let's go one step further, 16 inch naval gun, please tell me. Where on the human body that can hit and not result in a fine red mist and a really big crater?

In the first book, the rememberancer examines a Space Marine in a pair of shorts and little else, and muses what a 'waste' he is from a woman's perspective.
