I'm going to be involved in a game of Dark Heresy soon but I'm not sure if I understand skill levels correctly. Am I right in thinking that a skill, when trained starts off at the value of the relevant stat?

Pretty much.

Another way to put it would be that you never actually *roll* your skills in Dark Heresy, you roll your stats, and the skills give you bonuses (or obviate penalties).

Pretty much.

Yep. The only other thing to know about skills is that basic skills can be rolled without training at half the value of the stat. Its a fairly straight forward mechanic.

Thanks. The system seems kind of brutal in terms of skill use - you can't really boost anything up enough so as to ensure success from what I can see.

Yep, it's very difficult to get near 100% pass rate on any skill check in Dark Heresy.
