Hello hello hello and welcome to Population: Zero

A new non-OotS webcomic by artist Tobias Beis (Aka Threeshades (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/member.php?u=22497)) and writer Tim Maughan (Aka Lyinginbedmon (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/member.php?u=24970)).

It follows the journey of a group of characters as they look for something of great important whilst being pursued by authorities of a nasty sort (Yup, that explains a lot, huh? Don't worry, it gets less spoiler-y later on).

Updates schedule once a week on Mondays at 00:00 GMT
(A note: We rarely meet schedule, but it's still usually Monday)

And so, here we go:

Too early to judge the writing but Lying's writing it, and considering how awesome Remember is.. well.. this is gonna be something else.

And Jason, it isn't meant to be Burlewan style, as stated in the opening post.

Well, I knew a woman whose name is Tobias, so I still can't guess.

That woman did look like a man though.

Wait a second.....

Could that have been Threeshades?

Back on topic, the comic looks interesting with what we have seen so far. Looks like a combination of fantasy and sci-fi.

Pop: Zero is in fact a new brand of Ice cream designed to erase the free will upon consumation. The manufacturer fed us this new ice cream and made us start a webcomic for them to advertize their infernal product and conduct their insidious plan to enslave all humankind. The person who opened that account is not a human but a 20 feet long monstrous larva-like alien with drooling fangs. The whole Pop: Zero company hasbeen founded by these creatures.

Y'know, if your gonna make up stuff like this, at least make sure there arn't any 'gaps' in the story. For example, you say pop: Zero Ice Cream erases free will.
The manufacturer fed us this new ice cream and made us start a webcomic for them to advertize their infernal product and conduct their insidious plan to enslave all humankind Yet this clearly makes you still have free will.

Lyinginbedmon

Presently we're calling it a Chainpick. It's a pick with a back-flowing conveyor built into it to aid in mining work (Which is the primary occupation for dwarves in this setting). That said, it could certainly fill in nicely for a chainsaw if it got whacked into someone in combat.

One of my favourite parts of this zeroth comic is Kilzu. Regular readers of Remember will know that Kilzu is my marketing Imp and also a recurring in-joke, but here he is running a bar. And of course, how does a Tiny-sized Imp keep trouble out of his respectable business place? With a pump-action shotgun crossbow under the counter of course!

I actually like shadowrun thank you very much. But your point remains valid.

So Pop: Zero is a fantasy world that then advanced into sci-fi levels of tech? That's fairly cool. I expect the following exchange to occur at some point

Mage: Bah, ignorant fool, you cannot comprehend by power.
Tech user guy: What power do you have that I don't?
Mage: How about Fireballs
Tech User Guy: We have those, their called grenades.
Mage: Telepathic Link!
TUG: *Taps head* Internal communication system.
Mage: I can summon powerful allies
TUG: *holds up cell phone* I got my buddies on speed dial.
Mage: I can FLY!
TUG: Antigravity shoes.
Mage: I can Turn Invisible
TUG: Optical camoflauge
Mage: Magic Missles
TUG: Real, exploding missles.

The maggots decided to restrict my personal time (Which largely consists of bathroom breaks) unless I posted page two on the Remember forums. Now they're getting tasers...

So I've put the second page up here too and I'm hoping they don't find a good chemist.

Threeshades however isn't being so lucky and they're taking the aforementioned artist on a month of..."rehabilitation" therapy in about a week. The flipside of the coin is nonexistent because I'm still being put to work writing for the time.

In other words, the comic will be on a hiatus for August until Threeshades gets back, but I'll be way ahead on writing it so it shouldn't be too bad. I'll see if I can come up with some stuff to keep you all interested in that time.

See workman's compensation statement. I imagine the fact that the miners use pickaxes with conveyor belts on them, amounting to a chainsaw, should be some little clue as well.

Not back, just having internet. Im still going to be away for almost a week.

So much ill say to it: it's medieval-tech level free style fantasy without the classic fantasy races except goblins (so no gnomes, halflings, elves, orcs or whatsoever), there will be races of my own twisted imagination though. Also it will have a final fantasy inspired but largely made up by me magic system and human civilization will not be formed after existing cultures but will take aspects of all different kinds plus some of my own ideas to create an individual style.
And it will probably be quite bloody every now and then. That's all im gonna say so much.

Also i couldnt think of a title yet.

it's not that I don't like shadowrun. Im just saying, its pretty cheesy. I mean, a metroid crashes down on earth and suddenly everything is elves and magic?

That sounds like a lot of cheese to me. Finest cheddar.

Unless they radically changed things for 4th Edition, that's not what happened.

The concept (with Shadowrun and Earthdawn) is that the Earth's "manasphere" undergoes fluctuations over millenia, thus the strength of "magic" goes through cyclical changes. The Shadowrun setting is during an upswing of the mana cycle, thus magic is on the rise. As well as spellcasting, various genotypes and diseases are surpressed in a low mana era, hence the sudden appearance of fantasy races and monsters as the mana levels become high enough for them to be expressed again.

Perhaps you're getting confused with the Halley's Comet arc, which was basically an excuse to introduce *even more* magical things into the setting when Halley's Comet passes by.

Good comic, BTW :)

Our eventual goal is for Population: Zero to get it's own dedicated website, at which point we'll need donations and other support to pay for hosting, much like Remember.

One of our ideas is $5 equivalent for a cameo in a given page (Compared to webcomics like Commissioned which charges twice that.). But that's still in development and may not actually materialise.

@V Yes, excepting fan art. We're not quite cruel enough yet to copyright our characters such that they can't be made by hard-working fans with artistic capabilities.

So, no confirm/deny that the short yelling guy is Rob?

speaking of which, I gotta make a new Rob and Jack, and I need to do my guest comic.

That is, of course, assuming he's supposed to be the head with the pointed ears next to the dwarf in the banner.

And is that the guy from the bar?

Question to be asked: if you are the writer and shades is the artist, who is "Pop: Zero"?
To answer that, I'll quote myself:

Pop: Zero is in fact a new brand of Ice cream designed to erase the free will upon consumation. The manufacturer fed us this new ice cream and made us start a webcomic for them to advertize their infernal product and conduct their insidious plan to enslave all humankind. The person who opened that account is not a human but a 20 feet long monstrous larva-like alien with drooling fangs. The whole Pop: Zero company hasbeen founded by these creatures.

And they will punish me for leaking this information... Please help me! :smallfrown: :smalleek:

Onan unrelated note:
Thanks for the nice words on the art.

Just a heads-up for our regular readers, page 7 may be somewhat late. We've been doing a lot of work this past work with figuring out future plot details and this fairly addictive but low-quality game, "Real Life", has been sucking up quite a bit of time as well.

You sit in the dimly-lit bar of an old tavern. Gin stirs in your glass as you sit at the bar, and a howling storm rages outside.

Suddenly, a creak, as the door opens a bell sounds, and a stranged soaked to the bone enters the silent room. His dusty black coat drips eerily on the carpet in an unbreaking rhythm.

He takes a seat beside you, signals for a glass. He reaches into his coat for the money, and marked on his right hand you see...

Something I've noticed - all of the main characters so far appeared in the opening bar scene. The little halfling/gnome in the rucksack and the orc driver have space in the header, although their silhouettes have not been filled. I went searching for the fifth member - I'm reckoning the blue-haired person playing cards in Episode 0 will crop up at some point....

The ceiling fan spun wildly, off balance. It had to be, it was missing half a blade.

She sat there, on the bed, staring at it.

She hadn't wanted it like this, but he forced her hand. She was covered in it, it was horrifying, but she didn't care about that.

All she cared about was what was sitting in her hand, as he lay there at her feet, unmoving.

It was page 8. (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v684/Lyinginbedmon/PopulationZero/P0-8fin-1.jpg)
