My parents argued enough over my first name that they didn't even try to give me a middle name.
Everytime I bring that up, people decide to pick one for me.

So, GitP, what do you think? :smalltongue:

Thankfully I didn't get the middle name wackyness that was common growning up in a hippy town. The Beam sisters had middle names of Sun and Moon. Nah I was to get the name that my mother loved the sound of but hated its dimunitive. Matthew. Why she liked that particular noise I'll never get.

Named after a Great-uncle, or maybe a great great-uncle. I dunno.

Gwyn ap Nud means Gwyn of Nud, or Gwyn son of Nud. He's a character in Welsh mythology.

Thanks to my Polish parents I have the fantastic middle name of Andrzej. It translates into Andrew, but I like it that way since it goes so well with my last name Biedrzycki. My first name means complete, thus i don't have a middle name

for a long time there i wanted to legally adopt Elizabeth as my middle name, but that would have made my initials N.E.W. and i'm happy without one.

Middle names in my family are Jan(mum - though she goes by it rather than her first name), Paul (dad), Robin (eldest brother), Francis (older brother) and Wollumbin (my little brother - it's the local aboriginal name for mount warning, which he was born at the foot of).

All of the kids in my family except my little brother had their names decided on before we were born, thus, all of our names are unisex (or can be made the other gender without much trouble).

Aslan, yes the lion. My older sister's middle name is Kathina (I don't thionk that's the right spelling, its from Witch World), my younger brother's middle name is Elrond and my little sister's middle name is Meliene (or something, Witch World again I think). Needless to say, my mom is big into fantasy books :P

Of course the real kicker is my first name: Timon (tim-on, not time-on, and definitely not tim-mon from lion King I was born before that). I only know I one other person in the world with the same name (and even the same pronunciation), he is a bellboy in a hotel in Cape Town, South Africa. and this thread reminds me of the story of Francis. Francis was a kid at my gaming store who's actual name was Will. During the MTG games, there were two Wills, so the two of them had a game of magic for the name. Francis lost so we decided to call him by his middle name. Now, this was before I went to the store, and did not know his name was Will for a few months. It spread to work, school, and even his home. So now everyone calls him Francis.

Man, i have a hard enough time trying to remember how English and Spanish are pronounced. I think I'll stick to languages that use the same alphebet as mine no offense.

My middle name is John, by the way. I managed to bag the two most common western middle names, Michael John. Sometimes i wish my parents were more creative.

other middle names in my family: Malinda, Marie, Lynwood, Edward.

other fun middle names from friends: Mcvey, Kirby.

David. It just so happens to be my dad's name, and so logic dictates he wanted my name to pander to his ego. One of these days, I'll get around to changing it to Blayze.

Przemysław... That would be killer. Or Sławomir. Although they won't be so bad in shorter, usually used versions.

Eh. Those would only really be hard because of they include letters normally not in the roman alphabet. I know someone with the last name Pałuba, which just gets pronounced as Palooba. Przemisław would just need some explaining, although the rz might be a bit of a problem. It seems that quite a large amount of people seem to have a hard time remember that the sound made by rz is different from the sound made by the letter J. Thus, my last name often gets butchered from Biedrzycki into Biedjitski. Seriously people, rz does not equal j. It's the same sound made by the s in "vision." Is that so hard to understand?

Dunno, I never was American, but Przemysław seem pretty hard, beacuse of : "rz" right after first consonant (in "vision" it's after vowel),and "ł" that must simply go into "w", which actually is pronounced like "v".

EDIT: Maybe better ask some english speaking folks what is harder to pronounce.

For some time I had no idea what my middle name was, then I couldn't remember whether it was Anthony or Antony and if it was Anthony then how the heck I was supposed to pronounce it... Which I still don't, come to think of it...

Either way, it's Anthony, however it may be pronounced.

dude, y'all need to raise some money and buy some vowels. The letters P, R, and Z should have something between them, lol. I dont know if I even am capable of saying that. :smallsigh:

Then again, I'm willing to bet you'd have trouble with some southern words. Like the fact that "hide" is two syllables.

PRZ only makes 2 sounds that flow smoothly together. It's no more complex than PSH. But how on earth does "hide" have 2 syllables?

My middle name was an attempt to have a feminine-sounding, "pretty" feel to it. Like the name "Dawn," it tends to backfire.

Lynn. Sounds like Len. A GUY'S NAME.

Thankfully my first name isn't as masculine sounding, and thankfully my parents didn't go about naming me Ichabod (yes, a woman named Ichabod, it explains everything wrong with my life).

How "hide" is southern, exactly? :smallconfused:

And it's indeed "hi - de", although it's not so heard in pronunciation.

Which is exactly why I've given up any hope of teaching myself ANY Celtic language, much less Welsh. Honestly, who wants to live in a place called Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysilio gogogoch (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysilio gogogoch)? Mamie, after my paternal grandmother. Who's maiden name was Frankenstein (no joke). My father wanted to use Mamie as my first name, but my mother talked him out of it, for which I am eternally greatful.

I almost never use my full middle name, but I always use the initial M as part of my legal name.

They weren't thinking when they gave my brother the middle name Arnold (after a great uncle); he never uses his initials, since they spell JAW.

Ok, after a while on the internet, I have successfully uncovered two possible origins of my middle name: Hamner.

Origin 1: A variant of the name "Hanmer," which means "of Hanmer," which was a parish in the diocese of St. Asaph.

Origin 2: It means, "In the vicinity of Hand-Mere Lake"

I think that my middle name was originally the last name of some great-great-uncle on my mother's side.

I've had quite a few people misspell it as "Hammer." :smallsigh:

I have a very wet middle name: Blair, it means marsh.

If you people think you have heard strange accents, the you have not heard the worst Utah has to offer. Some people here are barn in barns, eat with farks, drink melk, sleep on pellows, climb moun'ains, and ask you questions like "Jeet?". Truly it is a strange place.

Well, Hanmer was a parish in the diocese of St. Asaph, and a diocese is a district of churches ruled over by a bishop. Therefore, I assumed St. Asaph was a bishop. That town was probably just named after him.

My middle name is Harry.
If my mother had been allowed her choice it would have been Robin, to go with my first name which is Christopher.
I am very grateful that my Dad decided to to take my wheelchair -bound mother up the flight of stairs to the room where birth certificates were done. :-)

My first son's middle names are David Harry, and My second son's middle names are Thomas Francis.
Of course their first names are Taliesin and Caedmon respectively. (Being a Chris, I got fed up with a common name. My sons have the choice of which one they get fed up with. They can have the "where does that name come from?" or 20 people sharing their names in any given room, depending on which name they choose to use.)
