Shield Mage

Shield mages are a casually organized vocation of abjurers. Some serve as bodyguards while others use the protective wards they develop to gain a closer and safer perspective in magical experiments. Traveling with a well-versed shield mage is a boon to any adventuring group. A good one can stop most magical attacks in their tracks.

HD: d4

Requirements
Feats: Spell Focus (abjuration)
Spellcasting: Able to cast shield as a first level arcane spell and dispel magic as a third level arcane spell.
Skills: Spellcraft 11 ranks, Know (arcana) 11 ranks
Special: Must have countered at least 20 spell levels of spells during her last level; must have researched a new abjuration spell

Class Skills (2+Int modifier per level): Concentration, Craft, Heal, Knowledge (all), Profession, Spellcraft

Weapon and Armor Proficiencies: A shield mage proficiency with light armor.

Armored Caster (Su): Shield mages can cast spells while wearing light armor.

Suppression (Su): Once per day per class level, a shield mage can unless her signature ability. She may create a protective sphere with a radius of five feet within a range of 100 feet plus 10 feet per class level. As she does so, she must expend a prepared spell or a spell slot; any magical effect of a lower or equal spell level cannot draw a line of sight or effect through the sphere as if it were a wall of force (includes spells, spell-like abilities, and miscellaneous special attacks of DC less than 11 + spell level). A fireball outside will not harm those inside (requires a 3rd level spell) while a suppression effect around a delayed blast fireball will be contained (requires a 7th level spell); it denies entry and exit of magical effects simultaneously.

Magical equipment can pass through, such as arrows or weapons; any spells used to enhance them temporarily, such as magic weapon, or even magic aura, will be removed though as previously stated.

The sphere lasts for one round plus another round per class level, or until targeted by a dispel effect of equal or greater spell level. When it ends, the area is free of the effects of the blocked spells as if the area had not been targeted (see Sculpt Spell metamagic). Mobile spell effects may move back in, such as cloudkill.

Improved Counterspell: A shield mage learns additional defensive maneuvers to counter magical attacks. She gains Improved Counterspell as a bonus feat.

Reactive Suppression (Su): When the shield mage has the opportunity to counter a spell, she may use her suppression ability as an immediate action instead just before the spell takes effect. She could contain a fireball within it, for instance.

The sphere lasts for one round per class level.

Abjurative Boon (Su): When a shield mage casts an abjuration spell or uses her suppression ability, she gains a +1 bonus to AC and saves until the beginning of her next round. If she is within the suppression sphere, the bonus becomes +2 until she leaves it (but it increases if she reenters it).

Masterful Counterspell: A shield mage may counter spells with a spell of the same level plus one; the school used becomes irrelevant. He gains a +2 bonus to any Spellcraft checks against any banned schools she may have taken from wizard levels while she counterspells.

Planar Suppression (Su): As the shield mage uses her suppression ability, she may opt to emulate the conditions of the Material Plane within it. One may exist for a while within the sphere in the middle of the Negative Energy Plane, for instance. It is only a temporary defense. She may also opt to grant all creatures inside it spell resistance 15 until they leave or the sphere fades.

Amen, brother. The world needs more abjurers.

Seriously, though, that masterful counterspelling jazz is RIDICulously powerful.
And you can get it at... thirteenth level? I really don't know about that.

This whole spell-parrying idea is what I build characters around.
I love those new arcane parrying spells in the PHB for just that reason.

Giving armored caster all the way up to mithrel Breastplate (remember it counts as Light armor!) all at once seems a bit much... too dipable... maybe make it -5% spell failure chance per class level that applies only to light armor...

Other than that... could be good. I MIGHT MAYBE PERHAPS not progress spellcasting at the first level...
