Well, recently I have been decorating my room, putting things up on the walls etc. So I had an idea after seeing a pretty cool stencil on DA. I got a skateboard deck and sprayed it red. Then I made a stencil and put in on the board, and I'm now planning to mount it on my wall.

There was a little bleeding, but what do you guys think?

I went for the whole sophisticated vs youth/redneck/chilled (can't think of the right word) look; one guy with a cap, *** and stylized hair, and the other with a trilby, pipe and clean cut hair.

I think I like the wolf better - the stripes are wrong, but I didn't shadow the kitty enough, because I was too scared.

@Abardam: Nice. Looks a bit, soft, I guess, could perhaps do with a bit more definition.

Good to see yas again. No goblins this time? :smalltongue:

@Exeson: Eeeh. It's looks ok, but a couple of things look off. a) The 'youth' looks like he's wearing a train driver's hat. I dunno if the 'yoof' where you are wear train hats to look 'street' but it doesn't really look at all like a baseball cap to me. The shadow over the eyes messes with the brim shape you see. Also those are some weird-ass chins they've got. Much too long for my liking. It's quite a nice graphical style though.

Photoshop. "Easy to use" isn't how I'd describe it if you've never used programs like it before. Though if you've used Gimp and other similar programs you've probably got the basic gist of it already.

You are so serious. So so serious. (It is a picture of you, right?) It looks ok (the nose is weird, but I think that you got the look you were going for), but you might want to lighten up the area above your left eye so it doesn't look like there is a gaping hole.

@Bisected: Proportions proportions and more proportions. Perhaps try finding a reference photo? Or a little drawing-mannequin or something. Try thinking about the body in sections. Fore arm and upper arm are about the same length (and same for each arm) the upper arm is the length of shoulder to mid abdomen, stuff like that.

Ah, my old enemy rears its head. I've read hundreds (well scores, or maybe dozens) of books on drawing (mostly in manga styles) and they've all given me different proportions (the one I was reading at the time suggested making the arm 1.3 heads for the upper and 1 for the lower). I guess using the rest of the body makes sense (somone's already suggested I move the arm, so I guess I'll take that into account when I redraw it).

TBH I have a got a mannequin somewhere, but I never use it since it doesn't seem to like the idea of the elbow folding more than 45 degrees amongst other strange limits.

Don't forget you (most likely) have a body. Try and see where your hands are when you are standing with your arms along your body (should be about mid-thigh). You can touch your shoulder with the hand of the same arm, making forearm+hand about equal (or slightly bigger) than arm+shoulder, etc.

I'm using my own proportions but you can use yours and alter slightly. It also helps having someone pose for you to give you an idea.

But if you're going for a specific style that isn't realistic... Some things change, but not all. Unless you want people to look gorilla-like, their arms shouldn't be much longer (so, still reaching about mid-thigh). However, the ratio compared to the head can change a lot, because depending on how cartoon you are aiming for, the body can be 2 to 8 heads tall (including the head itself).
Obviously in such a case, knowing the ratio in number of heads is a bit less helpful.

Thanks. I just tried recreating the pose myself (after ensuring my bedroom door was securly locked :smallwink:). I found (at least based on my own skills of proprioception since I don't have a mirror) that the left elbow should be in the air and the torso slight twisted forward, so I guess I'll be redrawing the upper body.

EDIT (to avoid double-posting):
OK, here's version 1.5. I've altered it (as mentioned above) by making the upper body twisted so that the shoulders are more perpendicular to the ground, giving it a more natural pose. I have also adjusted the position of the left arm as a result so that the elbow is sticking into the air. I have redrawn the mouth and tongue to both accommodate this and draw in more prominent fangs (as requested in the fanservice thread) to make it clearer that this is Therkla. I've left everything below the belt (literally, that's the point where I erased everything from) unchanged and I only redrew the mouth, lower jaw and ponytail on the head.

Just wondering: did you leave out the trigger guard on purpose or is it an honest mistake? Also, if a gun is firing then the slide is blown back by the recoiling gases. This (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CMC2fSQGWJI) is the best vid that depicts what I mean.

I cut out the trigger guard on purpose, 'cause it didn't really look the way I wanted, and I forgot about compensating somehow for the recoil... however, I don't regret it as it would disturb the calmness of the black and white... But if I added some sparks bursting out of the barrel, I think it'd look better... I'll re-shop is maybe....

'kay people, I need some help. Current avatar notwithstanding, I actually tend to make an effort with my avatars, 'specially those that aren't in OotS style. However recently in a certain Kiss or Kill thread, a certain person described my most recent (not current) offering as "an Urgh is worth a thousand adjectives" or something to that extent. I have tried making the lines a little thicker, which has helped because diagonals at 1px thickness look horrible, but please, tell me how (other than the border being too thick) I could improve the following:
http://i285.photobucket.com/albums/ll78/De_ressurect/joethicker.png
Larger, I think, looks better almost by virtue of being larger...

Finally! I found the 'fanart' topic!

It's been some time now, since the whole Soul Splice Arc, but...
Here's the scene from strip #641 that impressed itself in my mind >_<
I apologize for the poor quality of the image, but my scanner forfeited me last week and I had to snap a picture of the sheet.

This is just the pencil sketch, but I'm hoping to have the time to do a decent lineart and color it.
The Inkyrius/Vaarsuvius thing really got to me, especially since we hadn't had much insight on V's vulnerable, 'feeling' side, and that particular scene struck me as very, very intense...
I mean, V lost (more or less) everything he held dear in the attempt of keeping it safe. That's really sad T_T

Green haired left arm is ****ed, sorry to say. Arm cannot work like that. The elbow pit is facing us, but the knuckles are up, meaning the elbow joint would have to be pointing up, with neither pit nor joint facing us. The shading on the other elbow is also pretty ambiguous, not sure how you could improve it though. Also V's fingers look waaaaay too skinny to me.

I think you should make your shadows deeper in general, especially on things like the inside of the green haired's skirt/shirt thing (between the legs). Also shading isn't completely consistent, V's right arm being the biggest indicator of that.

Also, why use two progams to colour? Most people I know either use one or the other. What did you do in SAI and what in PS?

Yay an in-depth commentary! =)
What looks like an elbow pit wasn't meant to look like that, but, sadly, I'm no master in anatomy, so I just stop when I reach a point where I can't edit it anymore XD
Shading can be pretty tricky and I try different techniques all the time, sometimes all at once, so I'm aware that they can look weird sometimes, though skinny fingers were done on purpose, I instinctively do them always that way, and I know that full anatomical realism is waaaaaay beyond me, hehe... (although, all in all, it wasn't intended to be perfectly realistical nor was I going for tridimensional appearance but it was thoughtful of you to express your point of view so thoroughly, thanks :smallwink: )

Well, I used SAI for lineart and most of the coloring, because it feels more natural than PS and it's way easier to get a specific kind of effect with brushes alone, I only opened PS for final touches and effects, I only worked a bit on the ghosts and on the fire...

First time here, wooo!

I was inspired to post here after I did the picture below, since I spent a lot of time on it and figured I shouldn't be shy about it. I suck at drawing people with bows, which is why I drew it in the first place.

She be one of my D&D characters, obviously a Ranger. I think the golden chainmail is a little garish but my DM told me that's the colour, and it grants immunity to level drain, so I'll roll with it. :smallamused:

The arm drawing the string with the arrow is very awkward, and the arrow itself is kind of hugely long, but... Either way! Enjoy and tear to pieces:

Nah, I don't reckon there's shenanigans. Humbug draws Tales of Pylea (http://talesofpylea.com/). I've been aware of her work since about 2004 and every time I think I can't get more impressed by her artwork, she goes and jumps another few skill levels. Pencil and bucket tools in MSPaint. In as short a time possible, with little to no reference. The only way.

It's definitely a toss up between 6 and 7. The subtle lines in 6 are nicer looking, but I think the base colour of 7 (more magenta-y) fits better.

Hmmmm. Lets see... First of all, it's obvious you know what you're doing. Secondly, your avatar needs to be resized. Finally, lets have a look at the proportions. The head is a little too big, and I think there's something wrong with the face shape. It's possible that would be worked out as you add more detail, though. The legs might be a touch too long (although disproportionately long legs is a totally legitimate style choice), but the arms are ridiculously tiny. I just checked, and my forearm, from elbow to fingertips, is about as long as my shin. My upper arm goes about from my groin to my knee (sorry for that image), and all together my arms including my hands shouldn't be much shorter than my whole leg. Her arms would barely get past her knees.
Yeah, I think that's the main problem that won't be worked out with more details or attributed to style choices: the arms are way too small.

Disproportionately long legs? Who does that? Honestly >.>

I think most people are right though, the head may be a tad to large and her jawline seems to be a bit too large (although that could be a factor of the head being larger). But if you're going for a more anime-esque look, having a larger head could be perfectly fine.

If I could stand to be a LITTLE on the nit picky side, from one doodler to the next, I'd say that her right foot (the one closest to the viewer) is angled a bit wonky. For my experience, though I don't know if you were drawing from a picture or not for reference, the foot would more than likely be angled slightly inward - that positioning would keep her over slightly more on-balance. But again, I could be wrong.

BisectedBrioche
2010-07-21, 05:48 PM
The ratios I've learned to use are;

The head is made from a circle with the jaw drawn in so that the chin's 1/3 to 1/2 the circle's diameter.
The upper arm is 1 1/3 heads long and the lower arm 1.
The spine is 2.5 heads long (or 2 for teens, 1-2 for children)
The legs are the same length as the spine, head and neck combined with the knees about half way.
The shoulders are about a 1-1.5 the diameter of the head circle either side of the base of the neck.
The hips are slighly thinner than the shoulders.

Those arms seem very short. And hips are very variable, too: in males the hips are much more narrow than in women, who can range quite a lot but tend to be closer. In substantially pear-shaped women (poor sods), the hips can be significantly larger than the shoulders.

I've made a logo for an idea my Boy's had. It's an Idea Tree:

*logo here*

Thoughts?

...isn't it a bit too big for a logo? I mean, all detail would be lost in smaller size... if there's no smaller size than "visual" would be a better word for it...
It's very nice and red+yellow do a good job at catching the eye and giving off the impression of something lively and active, but strikes me as a bit too big and detailed, for a logo...

Serpentine
2010-08-29, 10:27 PM
Nope :smalltongue: It's not gonna be used on products or anything like that, so it can be on the big side. I just zoomed my screen out to check, and at about the size we'd be using it, it's still easy to make out.

albis
2010-08-30, 03:22 AM
Oh, ok... then it's a visual...
A logo by definition has three characteristics: it must be memorable (can easily be remembered), reproduceable (can be easily reproducted) and resizeable (can be made any size without losing its characteristics)...
If one of these is lacking, then it's either a bad logo or not a logo. XD
In your case, not a logo, but a pretty kickass visual concept!
Would do great as a poster, I says.

.......sorry for going all "professional bias" on you, it's just... well, that. ^^°

I was wondering: If I make fan art of Oots, but not in Oots style, should it be here or in the oots style art/fanart thread? I'm not sure. Other art is heare I see.

On a note to some earlier discussion about the size of a head. It's around 1/8 - 1/7 of the total body lenght. A child's head is of course bigger. The legs and hips are about 2/3 of the total lenght. That's what I learned in art school anyway. But I never really measure anymore, I just draw and see if it looks weird or not.

Serp: that's pretty damn awesome, but the resizing issue aside, I'm still not sure it's the best logo you could make.

For one thing, I'm not sure this would work, but I'd try changing the guy at the bottom from red to orange. Just a color preference, given the proximity of the two prominent red objects. And on that note, I'd move the guy over a little so he's not touching the base of the tree.

Also, if I were you, I'd enlarge a few items in the tree (say the brain, the guitar, the dollar sign, the hands, and the book) and get rid of the others, just to keep it from being too cluttered. I'm not sure if it would be better or worse, but you could also then scale the top of the tree down to keep the logo from being so top-heavy.

Happy designing!

That might very well be true. I think the 1/7 measurement looks more right, unless you're drawing a person that is meant to look very tall. 190cm somewhere and above.

I think this showcases pretty well why i went with Taokaka/hakumen earlier: faces are a massive pain-in-the-posterior with my materials & methods.
Still need to work more on avoiding blurry pics.

http://fc01.deviantart.net/fs71/i/2010/300/e/4/now_by_mooncalled_whiterose-d31niww.jpg
Now is the newest album from VOCALOID Kagamine Rin. Following the death of her twin brother, Len, Rin sinks into a deep depression. In this darkness, she realizes she is a puppet, forced to sing for the amusement of humans, and even after her brother's death, she must continue singing. Over the course of the album, the tone gradually shifts from mourning, to anger, and finally grudging, bitter acceptance, as she asks the question "What now?"
If you want to know who she is listen (and read the subtitles) to this (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pb6fSiMBbv4&feature=related) (Rin and Len are singing, but the animation is of two different characters) or this (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z_OyDxN8fxg).

Hi folks!

I am not 100% sure if this is the right place to ask, but I was wondering if any of you has drawn/seen/can share an image of a basinet (or any other kind of integral mediaval//renaissance helmet). I need a peculiar one, the visor should be integral and recall the face of a horse, and a long (say 10"/25cm) metal horn in the fashon of an unicorn should stick out of the forehead (stuck to the visor plate, or maybe the plate opens to the sides like the cheeckguards).

Kind like a photoshop of this, + the horn and the horse-face plate. Tough, I know :(

The problem that I have with the shading is that it's jagged in places, making it look more like mud than shade, the worst culprit is the right arm. The placement, however, seems pretty good.

Had an hour, tried my hand at a Caramelldansen loop again. It's not my best animation, but it's definitely the best Caramelldansen loop I've made. They're such a pain to make. They're just so finicky for some reason, you always have to go back and fix 3-4 tiny things that are "off" or that hop around from frame to frame. Then 3-4 new things pop up and eventually I stopped caring and we ended up here.:smalltongue:

I wanted to keep it realtively simple, I'm a very mediocre artist and without reference extensive material I decided to keep it pretty undetailled. I feel it's definitively lacking something, though.
The whole thing feels very frozen, wich as you can guess wasn't the orignial intent. The impression of movement is not here but I don't want to rely on blurring too much, I'm not sure how to improve. Work on the lightning ?

I attempted to quick-sketch my character to try to get used to drawing with a tablet:

http://img710.imageshack.us/img710/6232/felyndiira.png

Right leg issues aside, I could not get the lines to not appear wobbly when I try to draw something. Still trying to figure out whether it's an issue with my VisTablet or if it's just my hand shaking (though leaning toward the tablet, since I tried to trace a straight line using a ruler and it came out wobbly).

Thinking of stopping at the local MicroCenter and buying a Wacom just to see if I still experience the same issue =x.

(Then again, I'm still a newbie at drawing with a tablet, so it very well could just be me failing and not being used to drawing without the direct hand-to-eye coordination.)

You get used to it, but you also have to take fairly quick strokes. Quicker = less wobble. You get better at it over time. Just keep practicing (:

On the drawing: proportion look a bit wonky, but I'm no great master on such things. Overall it's pretty good (:

Actually, please do color it. :smalltongue: The reason why I left it at line art is because I can't decide how to go about coloring it. I'd love to see how others will do it. Shades? Cel? Painted? Watercolor? Color pencil? Argh!!!!!

Photoshop pen tool, yes. As for the stroke... well, they're not actually strokes. They're two shapes in different layers, a smaller one on top of the other. What you see as line is actually a colored shape, then drawn over by another shape (white in this case). That gives me plenty of pen control to tweak the "stroke's" thickness in different parts. So I end up with a somewhat stylized line art, with noticeable thickness and thinness variations. ^_^

Like I said, wish my tablet was working so I could. As it stands I can't really colour it since my style relies too heavily on the pressure sensitivity (:

Heh, guess I do just have to get used to tablet drawing. When I draw with a pencil and paper, I always draw lines relatively slowly, so the sudden presence of the wobble was somewhat of a hard adjustment. I'll keep this tablet for a week or so and switch to a smaller tablet if I still can't draw curves without the tiny wobbles with VisTablet.

I'll keep this tablet for a week or so and switch to a smaller tablet if I still can't draw curves without the tiny wobbles with VisTablet.

More random tablet practice (chibi Fel):

I find that smaller tablets give less control, since they behave even less like real paper. The 1:1 feel of a large tablet makes fine control a lot easier than the ~4:1 that smaller tablets give. That could just be me though, a lot of my friends with tablet seems to prefer smaller ones *shrugs*

On the sketch: Quite nice, even though it's chibi the proportions could still use some work I think. The torso seems a bit too long to me and the legs are a tad too fat, but otherwise, very good.

Sorry to break up the flow, but I've an issue. I wanted to post some of my own stuff, and I can't for the life of me figure out how to do so. Why doesn't cut-and-paste work? How do you put images in to spoiler boxes? What if you have no site to link images from?

Ok. So I'm a techno-idiot luddite. Sue me.
